The story in the MV for SHINee's "1000 years" is about how SHINee are the angels of death who guide the dead from the afterlife to Heaven. The pages of the book SHINee have are a record of each person's history and it shows pictures of meaningful or important moments in each person's life. Everyone who was boarding the bus are ghosts or spirits and the bus is taking them to Heaven. SHINee are there to make sure everyone makes it on the bus that is supposed to. You then see the little boy in the hospital and his mother is crying as the doctors tell her that her son is sick. The man you see is the boy's father and he is trying to cheer the boy up with the clown nose, the same way he used to do in the memories you see in the pictures in SHINee's book. But if you notice, the boy looks like he isn't even paying attention, and that's because he can't see his father because his father is dead. (The father died right before the boy became sick. I always feel bad for the mom because her husband has recently died and now her son is sick.) However, when you die, you have a short time to complete any unfinished business you have on Earth before you have to leave. So that is why you see SHINee looking at their pocket watches because they are counting down the time until the man has to leave. SHINee are just there observing what happens and routing for the man, hoping that he is able to accomplish everything he wants to before his time is up. The man just wants one more chance to see his son smile, so he comes up with the plan to launch all those balloons into the sky outside his son's window, as a way to say I am here and I will always be with you in your memory. And, as you saw, it was a success. We see his son happy and smiling as he sees the balloons floating past his window. After seeing his son smile one last time, the man has completed his business here on Earth, so he boards the bus and heads off to Heaven. Then you see SHINee's watches glow because everyone's time here on Earth is up and it's time for them to head to Heaven. Putting their fists in the air is something the father, mother and son used to do as a family, so you see everyone put their fists in the air to show their connection to each other and that they will never forget and that they are all routing for them, etc.

Roscoe, your ability to interpret a story is incredible. When this song was first released, Japanese people were confused, and I remember having many discussions with my English-speaking friends about why the father is already dead. At first glance, it seems like the son is ignoring the clown action his father performed. But in reality, he cannot see the presence of his father's spirit. Going back one more scene, neither the doctor nor the mother make eye contact with the father. He is an invisible being. At this point, Japanese people can easily understand that "Oh, he is no longer of this world." However, even people who can read Japanese still look at that old newspaper article and say, "What does that mean?" When I am called to heaven, I would like to ride on that Grim Reaper's bus while delivering invisible love to my loved ones.
SHINee is so good, and I'm very happy you watched this video. I don't think it gets the love and attention that it deserves. 💜 Thank you for your reaction!!
I first heard this song not too long after my own father passed away. And I understand a good bit of Japanese, so the lyrics hit me too. You can imagine I bawled like a baby. I still cry whenever I try to sing along with this song. It's so beautiful.

SHINee's ballads and Japanese discography really got me following the geoup. this is my umtimate fave SHINee song and MV. (I'm a fil major, so i am biased to this mv😅)
I'm very lucky to have grown up with SHINee, they gave us so much ❤ Mv is so beautiful that the story is literally immersive, while SHINee also caresses his soul with their voice 😊
Shinee is really great. I hope you react to their music video "Countless" or "Our Page" sometime. And maybe also to BigBang's HaruHaru, Loser or Tell me Goodbye
Have you seen their MV for Kimi no Sei de? I know it's blocked in many countries (you can find it in full with English subs on my channel) but it's REALLY worth checking out. it LOOKS very simple, but the amount of emotions it still manages to convey is insane. I still cry every time I watch it....

When the story transcends language…. Well done!!
This is my all time favorite SHINee MV (and I also adore the song itself), followed by the MV for Get the treasure.
You and me both! I dunno why but Get the Treasure is so unpopular 😢
@SHINeePotato it might be too painful for some people, being the last MV filmed as 5, I don't know...
I'm not crying😭 you are
You missed when the Dad opened the suitcase the stairs behind him looked like angel wings.👼
The vocals....subtle, powerful and emotional all at once...

This one makes me cry every time.
This why it helps to know cultural references. This is great story storytelling. Whoever came up with this storyboard definitely needs a raise.
this and 'kimi no sei de' always make me cry
So glad you watched this. This song and Password are my favorite Japanese songs from #5HINee

In the first half of the song, the MV looked like SHINee (shinigami) was waiting for the kid. So it became a shock when they took the dad.
