The oppressive, subjugating, imposing colonial system is not the same simple mechanism as the invasions seen throughout history, and colonialism continues to advantage the settler population, and/or the previous social and political configurations have been replaced by incompatible Western ones, and corrupt politicians corroborating with their former colonial nation continue to exploit these nations for their own profit. Obviously you know most of this already, or you wouldn't be presenting this false dichotomy. Similar mechanisms to colonialism also now take shape in the form of imperialism and international monetary institutions.
