The whole speech is very inspiring but the end is just as great, especially what he said about the audience's response to the leaders of Ancient Rome and Greece. The other was praised for his great speech, but the other speaker was able to influence his audience to act. This is how we will know the effectiveness and power of a speech.

What a great speech indeed, Sir! The objective of yours of making each and every country being connected to each other by the means of communication and moral sense. And the way you emphasizes that the poorest people and countries has also their capacities to be on their fullest strength if only would be given a chance, that's just, WOAH! Hands down for you, Sir! Thank you!!!! ♡

TED Talks, Gordon Brown: Wiring a web for global good
Can I say how delighted I am to be away from the calm of Westminster and Whitehall?
This is Kim, a nine-year-old Vietnam girl, her back ruined by napalm, and she awakened the conscience of the nation of America to begin to end the Vietnam War.
This is Birhan, who was the Ethiopian girl who launched Live Aid in the 1980s, 15 minutes away from death when she was rescued, and that picture of her being rescued is one that went round the world. This is Tiananmen Square. A man before a tank became a picture that became a symbol, for the whole world, of resistance. This next is the Sudanese girl, a few moments from death, a vulture hovering in the background, a picture that went round the world and shocked people into action on poverty. This is Neda, the Iranian girl who was shot while at a demonstration with her father in Iran only a few weeks ago, and she is now the focus, rightly so, of the RUclips generation.
And what do all these pictures and events have in common?
What they have in common is what we see unlocked and what we cannot see. What we see unlocked: the invisible ties and bonds of sympathy that bring us together to become a human community. What these pictures demonstrate is that we do feel the pain of others, however distantly. What I think these pictures demonstrate is that we do believe in something bigger than ourselves. What these pictures demonstrate is that there is a moral sense across all religions, across all faiths, across all continents -- a moral sense that not only do we share the pain of others, and believe in something bigger than ourselves but we have a duty to act when we see things that are wrong that need righted, see injuries that need to be corrected, see problems that need to be rectified.
There is a story about Olof Palme, the Swedish Prime Minister, going to see Ronald Reagan in America in the 1980s.
Before he arrived Ronald Reagan said -- and he was the Swedish Social Democratic Prime Minister -- "Isn’t this man a communist?" The reply was, "No, Mr President, he’s an anti-communist." And Ronald Reagan said, "I don’t care what kind of communist he is!" (Laughter) Ronald Reagan asked Olof Palme, the Social Democratic Prime Minister of Sweden, "Well, what do you believe in? Do you want to abolish the rich?" He said, "No, I want to abolish the poor." Our responsibility is to let everyone have the chance to realize their potential to the full.
I believe there is a moral sense and a global ethic that commands attention from people of every religion and every faith, and people of no faith. But I think what’s new is that we now have the capacity to communicate instantaneously across frontiers right across the world. We now have the capacity to find common ground with people we will never meet but who we will meet through the Internet and through all the modern means of communication, that we now have the capacity to organize and take collective action together to deal with the problem or an injustice that we want to deal with, and I believe that this makes this a unique age in human history, and it is the start of what I would call the creation of a truly global society.
Go back 200 years when the slave trade was under pressure from William Wilberforce and all the protesters.
They protested across Britain. They won public opinion over a long period of time. But it took 24 years for the campaign to be successful. What could they have done with the pictures they could have shown if they were able to use the modern means of communication to win people’s hearts and minds?
Or if you take Eglantyne Jebb, the woman who created Save the Children 90 years ago.
She was so appalled by what was happening in Austria as a result of the First World War and what was happening to children who were part of the defeated families of Austria, that in Britain she wanted to take action, but she had to go house to house, leaflet to leaflet, to get people to attend a rally in the Royal Albert Hall that eventually gave birth to Save the Children, an international organization that is now fully recognized as one of the great institutions in our land and in the world. But what more could she have done if she’d had the modern means of communications available to her to create a sense that the injustice that people saw had to be acted upon immediately?
Now look at what’s happened in the last 10 years.
In Philippines in 2001, President Estrada -- a million people texted each other about the corruption of that regime, eventually brought it down and it was, of course, called the "coup de text." Then you have in Zimbabwe the first election under Robert Mugabe a year ago. Because people were able to take mobile-phone photographs of what was happening at the polling stations, it was impossible for that Premier to fix that election in the way that he wanted to do. Or take Burma and the monks that were blogging out, a country that nobody knew anything that was

What IS true is that instant communication of events, especially those with video/images attached, can inspire a uniting and collaborative spirit in many people and focus minds onto a shared responsibility when those minds would have otherwise remained oblivious or distracted. This is true, and that's what makes this a very special time in history. He's neither exaggerating nor misleading on this point.

The World has changed profoundly in terms of communication and technology, information can be distributed easily and efficiently. No longer does somebody have to wait a month for a letter, e-mail is an easier and faster way to send mail through the internet. Anything can go anywhere and be distributed to the internet via a mouse click. Gordon Brown, prime minister of England addresses this in his TED talk.
We have obtained the tools for broad information distribution that have profound effects on the world. For example when Neda, a persion woman died during the Iranian elections. This brought global attention to those elections and became a rallying point of protesters against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Another example, in the Philippines in 2001, a million people texted each other about the corruption of the regime of President Estrada. Seems harmless; just a whole bunch of people texted about how bad this guy is, but eventually his regime was brought down and it was called the coup de text.
Technology has become a vehicle for human expression, the internet itself is a wide network that can inspire and become a rallying point for people. Gordon brown says we need to take it one step further. The internet can become a rallying point for everyone in the world to take on global issues. Such as global warming and world hunger,we can do more than just taking down a corrupt ruler, technology along with the internet can be what ends world hunger and global warming, the power of communication is great.
However, I believe that Gordon Brown only addresses the positive of communication, true that the world can be profoundly effected, but that doesn’t mean just in a good way, but also in a bad way. Terrerists and people that wish to harm, can use the internet as a tool to spread their nefarious plans. Also censorship is in issue, censorship restricts the input and output of information. Even though censorship is getting harder and harder to impose it is still practiced in places such as North Korea and China. Censorship is a hinderance to the idea Gordon Brown has proposed, the idea of using the web to fight golbal problems.
Communication is key for this idea to succeed, and censorship and evil-doers are hindrances in this plan, but I believe its possible if you utilize the tools that we have made.
    For your reaction paper people.

The technology presented by GB is that of love through communication on a global scale. People love others more when experience can be conveyed. Prayer for others helps fill the mind with love, making new connections between neurons for that purpose. Today's challenge is to make computer connections for that purpose.

    Purposive Communication
    A. What global issues have emerged because of miscommunication?
    B. How can effective communication and language use to contribute to the creation of a truly global society?
A.) The failure to communicate adequately is one of the reasons why global issues have emerged. Some examples are poverty, climate change, economy and security. One of the major challenges in our time is climate change. All of those shifting weathers that ruins the food production that is one of the reasons for poverty, the rising of sea levels that increase the risk of flooding and the scope of such impacts of climate change do not just affect a certain community but affects globally. The conflict between countries that causes war is also one of the global issues that had emerged long ago. Those wars that ruined infrastructures and the peaceful life that the people would have lived. All effects would have been prevented if all the countries involved could have communicate well. Security and peace that could have been achieved if there would be a good communication happening between countries. All of these global issues could have been prevented if only there were a good communication. A communication that would benefit the majority and will result to a better global society.
B.) First of all, communication when involved it’s the main interaction between society parts or individuals. The used language is an important means and tools to achieve that communication. The most important ingredient that will contribute to creating a truly global society is indeed that effectiveness of the area where messages are well sent by transmitters and the receivers will not only receive and interact positively with that message, they will also detect and receive the transmitter’s feelings that will emphasis positively and create that synergy between both parts.

That's probably the most articulate speech I've heard from him. No doubt it was rehearsed enough times, but still executed well. As for the content: It came across a bit too much like a charity, i.e. Directly aimed to invoke emotion, which clearly shows by the use of well known photographs and situations. Hence it seemed a little artificial. Not saying I don't agree with the topics, just discussing the execution and content of it.

There could be many words spoken with eloquence but there is a basic premise which drives change positively. If those who speak, believe in making the change and accept the present with heart, it's then that the efforts towards change would yield happiness for all. The world needs to get rid of "Scarce Mentality", otherwise what we are left with are vacuous words.

Well put. I think we certainly need a world government, and the resources are there, but ignorance would tear it down befrore it got off the ground. I think it will happen in time, but education is I think the key factor. Not just in the west, but in developing countries where money is sorely needed, as is agriculture, industry, health care, etc.

I can't believe he told the "dying tortured boy's last words to his mother" story. "Don't worry, the United Nations is coming" give me a break. Definition of apocryphal. How did we hear this story if he was tortured to death and so was his mother? Yeah, i'm sure the torturers related it.
