In this video Heimler explores the various responses from indigenous peoples to the big wave of European imperial expansion from 1750-1900.
In general, when imperial powers showed up, resistance was the response from the natives. American Indians, including the Cherokee, resisted westward expansion by Americans. Their resistance took the form of the Ghost Dance. Africans responded often with violence as in the Madhist Revolt. South Americans likewise rebelled under the leadership of Tupac Amaru II. Mexicans repelled the French from Mexico in a movement begun by ousted Mexican leader Benito Juarez.
All of this aligns with Unit 6 Topic 3 (6.3) of the AP World History Curriculum. If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler will answer forthwithly.

Dang... a mighty compliment indeed
@@heimlershistory a compliment you don't deserve

@Brian Lee I in no way want to start any kind of argument nor sound condescending, but maybe constructive criticism rather than outright insults would be more helpful. I for one have a very favorable impression (and perhaps a newfound bias) towards Heimler's incredible videos, each of which he clearly put a lot of work and care into in order to better the future of students. Please do consider other people's perspectives when commenting so thoughtlessly.
Brian Lee wow chill out. they are two different history reviews and both are equally amazing. Make more constructive criticism rather than insults
imagine hemmer was your actual history teacher. it would really make my take this course 10 times easier
fr
You would need to take an English class with better teachers first
that would be the school district's worst nightmare. you'd have huge student migrations to whatever area he was teaching in, parental consent or not
I'm kinda sad because my AP World History class is going faster than this. But I'll come back to these videos once before my AP Exams.
See you then!

In the wild, there is no health care. In the wild, health care is, “Ow, I hurt my leg. I can’t run. A lion eats me and I’m dead.” Well, I’m not dead. I’m the lion.
Well played

Our class is behind you, so these videos are great because it clarifies everything we are going to learn.

Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
Usually when imperialist countries start pushing themselves into land, the people get a sense of nationalism, which resisted the imperial powers.
Americas:
When the United States was still under the British as colonies, British won the French and Indian War (which was part of a bigger, global war).
This led to the proclamation of 1763 to be issued.
It was basically an imaginary line that run down the land, where the colonizers couldn’t move into the land that is reserved for the Natives.
But they did, without the orders from the monarch. Where after, Americans fought a war with Britain in order to gain their independence.
Cherokee Indians:
Dealt with the British colonists and later the Americans for a long time.
To carve out a space for themselves in the American nation, they culturally became like Americans, by dressing like them and stuff (called Assimilation)
Made a constitutional government that patterned the US constitution and adopted many American cultural customs.
Worked for a while, until they found gold in their land.
In 1830, the American Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which sent all the Indians from their space to another reserved place for them.
Trail of Tears, to Oklahoma.
Second half of the 18th century, there was a resistance movement called the Ghost Dance.
A prophecy given to them where their ancestral dead would return and drive the white man out of their lands, so they engaged in Ghost Dance (ritualistic dancing) to fasten the process.
Many other native groups adopted this idea, and did this as well.
But this led to the Wounded Knee in 1890, where the Sioux Indians were crushed by the British.
Ultimately the end of the Indian and British wars.
Peru:
Cacique, a hereditary leader, by the name of Tupac Amaru II led an armed rebellion against the spanish colonial rulers.
Where he arrested a colonial leader, and tortured him.
The Spanish retaliated, a rebellion among the natives and throughout South America spread.
Eventually Amaru was captured and executed, and this was the last major indian revolt against spain.
Mexico:
Benito Juarez was in power, at this time, he was of Zapotec blood.
A liberal, despised foreign powers coming into Mexico.
The government underneath him didn’t like his liberalism, so they decided to conspire with the European powers and overthrow Juarez’s government.
French occupation was short lived.
Australia:
1778, a penal colony in Australia. Settlers came to live there too, and was told to be kind to the Aboriginal people.
Since the natives didn’t have a say in the government, the settlers pushed into their land, and there were revolts, but obviously the British won.
Africa:
The native Xhosa people refused to be ruled by Europeans around South Africa.
Fought with the British for over 40 years in the 19th century, and in the end the Xhosa cattle were dying in large numbers.
They concluded that the cattle died because they were infected with diseases from the European cattle.
So they killed all of their cattle, so the spirits can drive the white people away, this became known as the Xhosa Cattle Killing movement. Killed over 400,000 cattle.
West Africa, Sokoto Caliphate was established in 1804 as a purification mission from the Islamic Hausa Tribe.
Established a thriving economy by the means of slave trade.
Berlin conference: the dividing of Africa
Sokoto was named as British’s.
By 1903, despite much resistance, the Sokoto caliphate was dismantled and made a protectorate of Britain.
In 1868, a chieftain named Samory Toure Established the Wassoulou Empire in West Africa (Where the French had the same problem as Britain in west Africa).
When the French came knocking, he violently resisted and did a lot of conflicts known as the Samory Toure wars.
French won, and established a french colony.
Mahdist Revolt: people going against the British to protect the suez canal.
Balkans:
Resentment regarding Ottoman occupation around the middle east and Europeans parts of the world, this surged a new wave of nationalism among the Ottomans.
Balkan states went against the Ottomans, and established their own Balkan states.
THANK YOU I LOVE YOU OMG

So we are all born with sin, but in order to get to HEAVEN we would have to be sinless, bc HEAVEN is a place w/o sin. This was not possible, but through HIS ONE AND ONLE SON JESUS CHRSIT, (GOD in the flesh) HE lived a perfect sinless life, and died the death we deserved as sinners, being crucified and whipped and tortured and suffocating to death. So HE could repay our debt of sin, thus making us able to go to HEAVEN. You see GOD loves us so much that not only did HE do all that for us, but HE made it free, GOD made is so that all we had to do to accept this free gift was to but our FAITH AND TRUST in JESUS, in what HE did for us. Thats it, that's all we needed to do. And in doing so HE will use us, in order to spread HIS love to others, to be vessels of HIS grace. I am just a mere peasant, but even though I am a peasant, GOD honors me like HIS child. HIS love for us is not comprehendible. All HE asks is that you love HIM as HE as loves you first. GOD BLESS.

Ok but imagine all the hatred there would be in North America if South USA would've won the Civil war...
You mention that the Ghost Dance movement occurred in the second half of the 18th Century - isn't that the 19th Century?
We didn't even learn about this in our class
Do you have any tips on students who have 45 minutes for their exam tomorrow with a DBQ but also has semi bad comprehension and dyslexic and how to make them feel less stressed and not freak out so much????
May the force be with us
hi! in the AMSCO book in 6.3 there are some topics about south asian resistance, southeast asian resistance, and new zealand not mentioned in this video...is that supposed to be known?
You probably don't need this anymore but this is a *very* broad thing so probably
