Over the course of his career, John Mellencamp has become a symbol of the hopes, struggles and passions of Americas heartland. As a songwriter, many of his efforts have transcended hit status (Hurts So Good, Pink Houses, I Need A Lover) and have entered the cultural vernacular. Mellencamps musical heart is in his ballads and rock numbers rooted in late 50s and early 60s rock and roll. His music describes the American experience; the hopes and fears of the common everyman. As co-founder of Farm Aid, Indianas favorite son gives voice to issues that might otherwise be ignored, from our disappearing farmlands to the role of race and class in America.

John Cougar Mellencamp´s music has been a great part of my life. Songs like "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane" or albums like "The Lonesome Jubilee", among many other records, summarized my adolescence. In many ways, I think his honesty towards music and intelligent writing skills have never been properly appreciated in his homeland. Some look at him as a second rate Springsteen and others think of Mellencamp as a too politically committed guy. For me he´s a hell of a talent and one of the musicians that made me like the USA.

My sister was born with Spina Bifida and unfortunately was buried on Christmas Eve at the age of 11 and I was 10. How do you celebrate Christmas after that? I have survivor's guilt, although I know she was God's chosen angel. John has been more than blessed, surviving when back than, no one really did.... Fighting for his "Mellencamp" name, having such extreme talent as a songwriter as well as a really great and sexy dancer! I have been a HUGE fan since I first heard him and have seen him in concert more times than I can remember as well as meeting him in person at a CD signing! LOVE him!

@@lindadixon4341Linda, I'm so sorry to hear that your sister had spina bifida and died at a young age.
I have struggled with health problems since being born with an enlarged heart, no left pulmonary artery and holes in my heart. I had surgery to correct most of that, but it left me with ribs wired together that don't line up properly, ribs and spinal bones going out of place easily. Off to the chiropractor to treat it today.
I find that yoga and meditation help as does resistance training. The stronger your lungs and heart and muscles are the better we can get through the days that are tough, and the more we can enjoy the days that flow like a river!
Today also happens to be the birthday of my husband, Leon, who died far too young in 2010. He was a very good artist, a graphic designer, who could hand draw the most amazing storyboards, he was a kind, caring and gentle soul.
This world is too hard on the gentle people.

I’ve known about JM since the early 80s when he burst onto the scene with “Jack & Diane” and I saw the video debut on MTV and was knocked out by this song. His stage name was John Cougar back then. Then “Pink Houses” came about after a few more hit songs, and that song made him a household name and made him famous. After a long battle with his record company, he changed his stage name to John Mellencamp. He has always been a “no bs” kind of guy and a real people person. He co-founded Farm Aid! Nice to know he’s in the hall of fame, well deserved.

This man is the most underrated artist of all time. He belongs in the same conversation with the biggest names of all time. He’s as good (if not better than) as Springsteen, Petty, The Eagles, or any other American artist. I think he’s better than The Stones and The Beatles! My favorite songs of his: “What if I came knockin’”, “Get a leg up”, “Scarecrow”, “Between a Laugh and a Tear”, “Grandview”, and “Minutes to Memories”. But the list goes and on. He is a legend.

You're probably not a musician or you wouldn't make bold statements like that. When you say this artist is better than this artist you're trying to quantify something that's subjective and it's impossible when you get to this level of musicianship and song-writing. It's like saying who's a better guitar player, Hendrix or SRV? Neither, they were each unique in their own way and there is no scale that you can measure them with. 'Favorite' or 'I love' are much better terms to use. That's why professional seasoned musicians always say so-and-so is my favorite, they almost never say so-and-so is the best (except when they mention Elvis because c'mon, he was the king). I love John Mellencamp's music and he is one of my favorite artists. I love his music as much as I love the Eagles, Springsteen, Clapton, Pink Floyd, Etc, the list goes on and on through every genre and type of music that I play, listen to and love.

This dude is one of the top amazing dudes I have ever known of. He never gave up...
Neither did Jeff Healey. Both of these extremely talented artists overcame extreme odds in life and the music industry. Two amazing people!!!
My dead ass did give up!!!

I first heard John Mellemcamp singing a song on a compilation album back in the 80’s, the song was ‘Miami’ and have been with his music ever since, wonderful man!

John Mellencamp is a very intelligent man, people often underestimate "rockers" but that would be a huge mistake!!!!! And here is your proof!!! To write the songs that he has is no easy task. And let's face it with the lifestyle on the road it is easy to self destruct, John did not want to do that. So glad he is here !!!!! I grew up on his music and so grateful I did !!!!!!!
