  • Embryo Genetic Testing (PGT-A) in IVF
Embryo Genetic Testing (PGT-A) in IVF is the new term used for preimplantation genetic screening (PGS formerly) performed on cells collected from early-stage embryos, to determine which embryos are best for embryo transfer and this new name simply means preimplantation genetic testing aneuploidies (PGT-A). The Preimplantation Genetic Testing - Aneuploidies (PGT-A) test is offered as a complement to a patient’s in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, to improve pregnancy success rates and reduce miscarriages.
This topic is discussed for us today by Kelly Loggenberg from Next Genetics (formally NextBio) who is a qualified and experienced Genetic Counsellor. This complex topic has been put together for all our patients during the Reproductive Health Month campaign.
For best understanding whilst watching this video, here are a few definitions for the clinical terms used:
PGT-A = Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is the testing of early-stage embryos (up to 5 days old) for genetic abnormalities
PGS = the former name for genetic testing on early-stage embryos, called Preimplantation Genetic Screening which looked for genetic abnormalities.
Aneuploid = an embryo with any deviation from the normal number of chromosomes, making this the “abnormal” embryo not suitable for transfers/use by the patient.
Euploid = an embryo with all the normal number of chromosomes present, making this the “normal” embryo suitable for transfers/use by the patient.
Mosaic = is the term now assigned to embryos found to possess both normal and abnormal cells (chromosomes) and the recommendation of whether to transfer or not will be made by the treating professionals.
PGT-M = Preimplantation Genetic Testing - Monogenic (PGT-M) is a test that is specifically designed to screen early-stage embryos for a known mutation that is causing a familial genetic condition.
Watch the video to find out all you need to know about PGT-A and a big thank you to Next Biosciences for partnering with Vitalab to discuss these very important genetic topics for all patients and persons watching this informative video today.
Vitalab’s RUclips Channel tries to provide you with the best medical information around infertility, recurrent miscarriages or other just trying to conceive (TTC) topics, tips and recommendations. We have tried to cover infertility testing, fertility treatments, fertility medications and fertility treatments like IUI and IVF (in vitro fertilization).
