    he has a permanent injury (from a car crash) so he cant join live stages and dance choreos. on the last comeback (blacksuit) he only danced on the second part where he's got lines. it's sad, tbh but he's health is priority so,

    • @stickstriker

      myungsoo's yeoja It's so important to emphasize that this car accident happened back in 2008 (?) and it's been so long. It's becoming clear that Heechul will never make a full recovery, but he's desperately trying to do what he can to stay capable. I think I read somewhere that Eunhyuk even begged him to stay when Heechul considered leaving because of his injury holding the group back.

    • @vee6834
      @vee6834 6 лет назад +374

      stickstriker yeah, i think heechul talked about how eunhyuk begged him in a show, probably life bar or sj returns im not sure where. but yeah, i dont think he'll have full recovery as well thats why it is so sad. im just glad that the members were so understanding abt it and kept encouraging heechul to atleast not leave the group.

      At first when the news came out that Heechul would not be participating in the comeback, I thought it meant that he would totally not be singing any part in the song. When the promo pics came out, I was shock to see him in them. I’m so glad he participated in this song, even if it was only a few lines ☺️☺️

    • @azunel
      @azunel 6 лет назад +328

      I think the correct term is "chronic pain". He suffered from a very traumatic injury and damaged his ankle back in 2006. I am guessing since the injury was so, so, so bad, he was never able to do a full recovery. He actually apologized to fans back when they had the Black Suit comeback, stating that he didn't want fans to worry because of his absence, so he participated in the promotions. Though, this song in particular is too dance-heavy for him to be participating in; and it seems like with age, the pain in his ankle is getting worse. He also commented that he tried to participate in the Black Suit promotion stages, but during rehearsals the first day, he went to sleep and the next morning he woke up in so much pain he wasn't even able to walk. So that's why he decided he had to rest during this comeback, and he isn't much likely to be able to dance anytime soon, or ever again, for that matter.

    I am Hispanic and I didn’t feel like this song was cultural appropriation at all! They did a great job of including Leslie Grace which I am officially a fan of! They didn’t just use her for a bit, that’s what I was expecting. They did a very amazing job with the song, My Latin ass was SHAKING lol

      Girl same, I’m hispanic and I didn’t feel like they were appropriating or using our culture in any way. The song is very catchy and the use of the acoustic guitar got me shook. The color palette and their outfits were amazing and really got that latin warm. I love it and can’t wait for their concert ❤️❤️❤️

    Cultural appropriation - stealing something originating from one culture and trying to say you created it (e.g. if black people started wearing hanboks and saying its african culture)
    Cultural appreciation - recognizing a specific culture while showing off an aspect of it along with being true to its nature (e.g this song)

    • @Jdisdudike
      @Jdisdudike 6 лет назад +7

      the thing is, by this definition, kpop idols wouldn't be criticized by black americans for having dreads.. which is not the case?

    • @denzelwenzel
      @denzelwenzel 6 лет назад +35

      Probably because alot of young idols are ignorant about the history and culture of black americans, they do it just to be cool. And alot of black celebrities still get alot of shit for rocking dreads or just their natural hair. While other races are praised for it

    • @takkariarmstrong8736
      @takkariarmstrong8736 6 лет назад +9

      @@Jdisdudike But theres also a crazy history and prevalence in present kpop with blackface and stereotyping involving black persons.

    • @Jdisdudike
      @Jdisdudike 6 лет назад +7

      but those who never said anything bad about black people, are judged because of the bad ones then? also it's popular mostly because the US always start trends, like.. that's how the US's softpower works for years now (if this trend was started by Brown latinos, they would do the same just like latin or oriental music is a trend in kpop right now)

    Tbh, I was expecting her to sing a little bit coz hey, that's how kpop usually does it. I was really (pleasantly) surprised to see her sing a lot (in Spanish!) and even dance althroughout the song. It felt like she was a member, didn't look awkward. She just fit right in. Yes, it is indeed very well done. I mean, I'd be kind of pissed off if they ask me to go all the way to South Korea just to sing a few lines. Lol. Leslie seemed to have enjoyed the collab a lot too.

    Im a mex-american - i personally dont think it was cultural appropriation. They werent disrespectful at all, they werent mocking at all. I guess there is the stereotype that we are sex obsessed, and that happens to be what this song is about, but it was mostly detailed in the korean parts.
    Thanks for saying ita latin based too! Most people would say " mexican influenced" while it isnt the case. we all get grouped as Mexicans until we have to explain different things to them

    My initial thought after watching the video over and over again was, why did they need a Korean actress when it could have been played by Leslie the entire time cause of how she did parts of it but! They producers actually thought ahead of me because! After giving it some thought, if they were to use Leslie as the main girl lead in the scenes it would of come off as Latina girls are easy? Or sexualized?? In which case she just had very honorable moments and a lot of verses. This production was executed excellently and has no negative connotation what so ever, it’s perfect. I love it!

    I understand that this is in good part a collaboration in preparation for their South American tour, a huge nod to their Latin fans. As always, SuJu are prepared to take risks, experiment with something new and . . . they pull it off AMAZINGLY.

    As a Mexican that is not into reggaeton, bachata and similar genres, they pulled it out awesomely. It felt so right everything, it felt so respectful towards Latin culture, they even included snow for us because they wanted us to experience what snowing was :'3 I mean, this is by far one of the best collabs I've ever seen, and I'm so glad they worked with Leslie and PlaySkillz, SuJu... is just awesome

    I too am really into how much they featured Leslie Grace. It feels like a TRUE collaboration instead of it just being tokenism. Dare I compare it to RANIA where Alex was actually a member and just came in and out of the choreography to do a rap. It was very cool.
    Its nice to see Suju doing something different and new and I am really into the song.

    I was afraid of the inclusion of Spanish bc this could’ve been totally bad but Leslie voice it’s so beautiful and the whole production of the song is great.

    As a latin person whose not pretty much intro in latin music, I was really worried about this featuring. I was wondering if this would be like reggaeton or something worse, cause I really don't like that stuff. BUT this is heaven. It's like they were able to capture freshness and sexyness from latin culture with out making it too heavy, vulgar or just a parody.
    For me, the line distribution is perfect. If Leslie would had just a few line or just sing the chorus, maybe could turn into something weird, a joke(?) I'm ELF and really love my men's voices, but I think she makes a great balance for this song.
    I'm moved and thankfull with them for make this song for their latin ELF right before they come with Super Show. It's feel like they really wanted to do a song to sing with us, and make it good, in a respectfull way and they did it!! Beyond that, Leslie said they treated her as a princess, plus she has been so sweet promoting the song and SJ, so I'm really proud to love good men, and this colaborations it self. Kind and talented mens featuring a sweet voice latin angel, can't ask for more

      AwkwardPurpleHead As a Latina there are some genres of Spanish music that I don’t like but some that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. i like the old Spanish songs, and the salsa especially. I don’t like the Spanish songs where you can barely understand what they are talking about and such. Idk how to categorize this mix of genres but this is the kind I rlllly like. They did a good job with the line distribution. It was perfect in my opinion

    as latinamerican I didn't feel like it was cultural appropriation mainly because she's latinamerican and I felt like it was very respectful. Latin America has a political connotation, meaning that there's opression that's being fought under that name and people just can't use it without knowing what latinamerican people is fighting for. actually I LOOOVE latinamerican inspired songs and I think that there're artists that are doing it so well (example, look at kard success (completly deserved btw, it would be amazing if there was some other groups like them)), but I really loved that kpop took latinamerican influence but also a latinamerican artist to perform it. GO GIRL

    www.soompi.com/2018/03/30/kim-heechul-sit-music-shows-super-juniors-comeback-due-health-concerns/
    It's because of the car crash a few years ago and the injury he got from that. He already did the barely minimum the last comeback. In one of his varieties, talk bar or something like that he also spoke about how he still has a lot of pain in his ankle because of the injury and that sometimes after preparations for the comeback or performance he has a lot of pain, that he starts crying because of the pain and has to take medication. And the doctor said that it will just get worse if he is going to strain his ankle/foot that much. Therefore while the black suit comeback and this time he said he will sit the music shows out or do the bare minimum and support super junior via his several variety shows.

    This was definitely NOT cultural appropriation. This was cultural appreciation! KPop has caught fire in Latin America, and I think KPop artists’ exposure to Latin Music has naturally lead to this collab, which was a total success. This is SUJU’s best comeback in years. There are no less than three different languages being sung in this track, which is so cool! It highlights how global KPop has become. I love everything about this comeback.

    Super Junior's always coming back with something new (that you wouldn't imagine Kpop would make that kind of music) and that's what makes them different in a good way. Their music ability's in another level (not to mention that other idols wouldn't do the same, but c'mon you gotta be honest to yourself and don't be biased).. it's just a matter of time until Knetz realized what they've been missing all these times. SJ deserves alot of respects from not only Kpop fans but also from worldwide. Just sayin'
    Thanks for reacting btw 😆

    As a mexican fan I really loved how our cultures meshed in the video's visuals and the sound, it's nowhere near cultural appropriation. I loved the song and the fact that it was a female feature made it so much better and a definite stand out in the kpop scene.

    I'm a Latin American born in Ecuador, and this was not cultural appropriation.
    The way they approached the concept was truly respectful, they weren't just saying appropriation bunch of meaningless words in Spanish. Maybe it followed the stereotype that all Latin American are obsessed with sex, but it wasn't really a big issue. Or maybe their clothes choice, but I felt it was inspired in the traditional style that is usually related to Cuba.
    I really liked how Leslie was portrayed as a real Latina, without whitewashing, or without trying to make her look more fit to Korean preferences of beauty.
    Regarding Heechul, other people have perfectly explained in the comments the reason for his absence. I would like to avoid that the members suggested him to do as in Sorry Sorry and Black Suit promotions (he stays out for most of the song, comes in, sings his part at the near end, and stays for the closing), but he didn't feel it fair. He didn't want to give a half performance, and his leg isn't in the best condition either, so he decided to stay out of promotions.

    The amount of lines Leslie got seems more than fair to me. I never thought she got too much. Witch makes this MV and song more great. Other songs with featuring artists sing only a bit and all they really get are shots and images of themselves but she sang a lot and even danced with them in their coreo. It was really nice to see her like as if she was a member

    being from mexico, the latin vibes are so evident and beautifully dispersed with that bright, beautiful flare that k-pop brings. this is the perfect song to listen to while walking down a worn out boardwalk, aged with the years of many generations of people walking among it, as the sun lightly kisses upon your body, being held back ocassionally by the light, refreshing breeze from the salty ocean around you. this song is so amazing and is a definitive, respective and beautiful nod to latin / spanish music. suju did such a great job ! You have to know, Super Junior's fans (we're called ELF), was a chill fandom. We're too "old" to complain about the lines of the songs. We're just enjoying it, we don't care who gets most or less line, as long as the song comes out good.
    And we're always being supportive towards whoever featuring with our idol.

I haven't seen something like this before, this is a whole new level. I love how you check the details, like the fact that there were two Leslies xdd About HeeChul, yeah, health issues. But even with that, he wanted to make this with the others and that's super cool. They even said the snow in some scenes of the video was a gift for us, because they had heard there was no snow in a big part of Latin America. Super Junior knows how to make songs right~ They must have had that idea of genuinely wanting to collaborate with her so that this sounds perfect the way it is right now :) It's amazing what they did here, and Super Junior did it perfectly. I agree, that Super Junior really wanted Leslie to shine, and I'm sure they thought of this before recording this. She got a lot of lines, compared to all the other members, but I feel they did do this on purpose. Super Junior is definitely at that point where they are able to do whatever concept they want and still pull it off tremendously well, and for them to give Leslie almost 90% of this song shows how much they wanted this to be a genuine collaboration for the Latin culture.

    I feel like Heechul plays a storyteller role in the music video, as his rap part isn't in the live performances on music shows. He's the person who sees this girl, who in the music video romances all of the members, everytime. He knows the things that the others don't, he shows us her secrets.

    Heechul can't use his left leg properly since his 2006 car accident that left him with 5 metal rods, but I believe his ankle has gotten worse recently. Performance and MVs are purposely done so he's only doing choreo that he able to. It's just more noticeable now due to so many members being in the military. I personally love Lo Siento!

    I'm latin but I don't feel like it was cultural appropiation. What feels nice to me is to be able to understand her verses!! hahahaha. She is really sweet and charismatic for what I saw in their interview, they seem to be enjoying and learning from each other and that makes you feel like a genuine interest in exchanguing cultures, korean and latin culture.
    Maybe the sets might be a little "latin cliche" but what it caught my attention was the snow, that was actually mentioned in the interview. I live in Chile and we don't have a lot of snow here, except for the cities that are in extreme south. So it was a nice detail to add, like a real mixing of both places, South Smerica and Korea.

    he was in a car accident back in 2006. so that's why he after that didn't have much screentime or lines, and also why he always comes in in the last verses fx in black suit, because he can't dance well. He even considered to not be a part of the comeback, because a lot of the choreographies had to be changed for him to be in, but SUJU (super junior) wanted him to be a part of it, and us fans wants that too. The building in the back has me wondering if they filmed this in the Dominican, but I see the Latin vibe. It reminds me of the Mexican buildings structures and bright colors. I did notice how you mention that sexy image but even in Latin videos that's seen a lot. wow thank you for appreciatin'because that's all we needed. i mean SJ worked so hard on this and appreciation means more than a lot than awards or wins honestly. so thank you. and to answer your questions, heechul wasn't on the choreo because he's sick. ryeowook and kyuhyun was on the army so they're not in this year's album. and i honestly dont have any complaints about leslie's parts or like leslie 'eating' the line distribution because she really is the star of this song. as you said, featuring other artists in a song or mv should do justice for them and yeah SJ did just that to leslie. I really like her voice actually it was unique. and there's also a version of lo siento in the album where KARD's Somin and Jiwoo was featured for the korean version, they did leslie's part. that version was the one they performed on music shows last week. so yeah, this is really such a long comment, sorry 😂

    heechul got a permenent injury back in 2007 i think, he got into a car accident on his way to donghae's father's funeral. due to the accident, he needed to bite his own tongue to stay conscious while waiting for rescue. as an effect of the accident, he got a metal rod on his thigh. so ever since 2009 w/c was the hit of 'sorry sorry' he wasnt able to join the group's choreo. but as an elf, hearing his voice in every song, seeing him on shows, him partly participating in the mv is more than enough. all we needed was the members healthy together

  • @AndreggvilJammer

    ELFs love Leslie Grace! And we really appreciate the collaboration - an amazing song featuring amazing vocals, what more could we ask for?
    Personally haven't seen any complaints whatsoever about Leslie getting more lines than most SJ members here, but I'd chalk that down to the fact that this song was teased as a collaboration in the beginning rather than a feature (even though it says "ft. Leslie Grace"). I also haven't seen anyone call this MV or the song culturally appropriative either, especially not from the Latinx and Hispanic K-pop community. I've heard and read nothing but positive, excited comments. If anything, the MV of "Lo Siento" and the song itself is probably one of the most tasteful and respectful combinations of two cultures and musical + aesthetic influences I've seen in K-pop thus far.
    Even as someone who isn't Latin/Hispanic, I really appreciate and love the crosscultural-ness of this whole collaboration, and I also think that it's a big step towards K-pop fusing and intermingling with other countries and cultures' music!
    And I think you're right - this was a really ambitious move from Super Junior and SM, but as expected, Super Junior never disappoints and they definitely delivered successfully. It was truly a genuine collaboration, as you said.
