My dog was put under anesthesia earlier today for X-rays and she’s been groggy all afternoon. She’s been sleeping and relaxing, so I’m watching this video to keep me nerves down 😅
It disturbs me so much that putting a dog under every year has become normal. Small children also get traumatized by things like stitches and cleanings and nobody would ever THINK of putting them under for something like that because the risk is too great.
I got scared from reading the comments and cancel my appointment even though my dog has a few loose teeth. I will get it done but I feel like I need to be more informed about anesthesia and alternate is.
My friend is getting this done today and I am terrified. Being the 1/however many thousand is what scares me. I know he needs his teeth cleaned because his breath started smelling really bad like a year ago. I have been putting it off because of anesthesia.
I went in on November 26th for routine dental cleaning. They administered the anesthesia and my dog flat lined. They revived her, though they do not know why she flat lined. My dog is very healthy and no issues with any diseases I believe they administered to much anesthesia. Is that possible? And now I have read that her survival rate is low due to her having cardiac arrest. Will my dog be ok. She is 5 years old. She is at a different hospital tonight and they have a ECG to monitor her heart. So far she is up and alert and all blood work normal and blood pressure is now doing good. My dog has had 2 or 3 cleanings before and also had surgery on her knee and she was just spayed and never no issues till yesterday. The Director of the clinic talked with me and they are paying for her monitoring at the other hospital and the Dr. she was upset and crying and felt bad, and told me they gave her less than what they gave her for her spay. I am so confused why this happened. I know it was not on purpose but I think someone messed up. When I got the call I was in shock and really upset. Is my dog going to have the same quality of life?
You have too had way to many dang dental cleanings done for a 5 year old dog unless you are giving her ice cream every day you need to cut WAY back! Al you doing is making the vet rich and giving your dog shiny teeth, if you going to do it wait till they get a LOT of tarter, maybe once every 4 or 5 years or so and give them a few cleaning bones/chews in the meantime, do all the stuff to help keep teh tarter off without putting them under all the time
This makes me feel better. The vet did blood work on my dog and everything looked good except ALP was slightly elevated she wants to recheck her blood again in 3 months. She did not seem concerned. She had her physical at the same time and she said her heart and lungs sound good. She doesn’t see any reasons to not give her anesthesia. However I am still nervous a bit! But your video helped and I do believe the benefits out weigh the risks.
Hi! I am not sure if you will see my comment. My dog is almost 10 years old, extremely healthy, but she needs a dental. If I do pre anesthetic bloodwork and X-rays and everything comes back normal, what is the likelihood she will be fine under anesthesia? She has gone under before with no issues, but it scared me as she gets older. Please give me some advise!
@@belenhernandez4367 It went well, she ended up coming out of it with a broken jaw which is apparently somethng that can happen with smaller dogs but that healed in a few weeks and the myriad rotten teeth she had since we got her from the shelter are gone. She was not happy for about a week but she was back to normal soon enough.
@@Manwhocares4u she is a rescue so no definite age but its between 10-12, she ended up suffering a broken jaw from the procedure but apparently that is somewhat common for the tiniest dogs with small brittle jaws during extractions. Was not happy for a couple weeks but she is much better off now without the infected/rotten teeth though.
The vet killed my dog cleaning its teeth by breaking her back while she was under anesthesia. The short version is that she wasn't walking, just dragging her rear end after the dental work, then went into severe seizures leading to her death. X-rays showed the damage to the spine before seizures started.
My Mom had a little dog about 15 pounds 6-7 years old the vet put her under and removed 14 teeth I heard for a small dog they should of done 2-3 teeth at a time considering the size of the dog putting the dog under for 7 hours for 14 teeth at once seems too much considering a bunch of my neighbors with small dogs told me this a couple days after the tooth removal the dog got sick hacking and panting through the night finally after a week the dog passed away the dog had no health issues until the tooth removal I think they gave the little dog to much anesthesia when they put her under and it slowly killed her through the week.
I’m sorry for your loss I think a lot of people don’t understand how losing a close pet is the same as losing a family member my Mom cries every time we talk about her dog.I think sometimes life is unfair, that little dog my Mom named Socks was all she had now she has to heal emotionally before even thinking about getting a new dog, I totally understand what you’re going through STAY STRONG.
I also wanted to say I think putting a small dog under is very dangerous I don’t think me or my mom will be doing this again unless the dogs life is in jeopardy, we will be exploring alternative methods for now on.
@suestone6156 how old was ur baby? Where they not monitoring him ? After the procedure it's is very important that the pet is monitored just like humans alot of complications even death can happen
Thank you Dr.Sue for referring me to this video. Unfortunately I just saw it now and it appears Diva is worse . Seems to have either gotten totally blind or maybe has some dementia going on. Now with this Covid going on it's hard to take them to the vet because I hear you cannot go in with your dog. Even if you have to put them down . That's heartbreaking. I cannot let my dog get put down alone 😭. I just do not know what to do . Gotta call the vet tomorrow . But thank you stay safe .
My baby has a small tumor that the vet assured me she would be able to remove with local. But then I receive a phone call and they told me that they put him under to do the operation even though I said numerous times I do not want him to put to sleep. They did it anyway without consulting me first.
My dog needs orthopedic surgery . They put him to sleep and he immediately went into cardiac arrest and they brought him back and did not do the surgery
I had our health 1 year old health puppy put under for knee surgery, after not having issues getting fixed and he had heart failure before he got to have the X-rays taken. 😭 1 in 2000 die! We were not told of the odd.
My dog son Tony~O has a brain tumor..and had a reaction to anesthesia cause he is older they did a chest x-ray to make sure no cancer in lungs..all clear..hard to walk after anesthesia..etc finally walked next day. Made me think I don't want to have Him have MRI cause then with radiation therapy would be 20 times. What do you think?
Tonio since passed of the brain cancer I'm so sorry for the loss of your baby that is so devastating that should not have happened I'm so so sorry I did get the MRI for Tony-O he made it through..
Sorry Dr. Sue, I disagree with you. What you should have said is that you should brush your dog’s teeth every day and this way, you won’t need to give your dog full anesthesia for a teeth cleaning operation. This is like a dentist telling you, ‘Madam, I will clean your teeth, but the risk of the treatment is the same as an appendectomy.’ Remember, full anesthesia is many times riskier in dogs than in humans, if not hundreds of times.
