Hi Dan I am so thankful to have someone who I love his work in drawing , am following you about two years ago .. I love the way that you draw .. practicing in the same as you do .. I am really doing well on developing my drawing .. have about two years of practicing and have perfect results although Most of the good materials of drawing are not available in my country , I live in Sudan ، even you find them the price will be so high for me as I am student now Hope one day I will be able to obtain all tools that I need .. and getting better and better ... Thank you for the great efforts you made to make good videos like this 💙
I love your work. just subscribed. I agree with everything you said in this video except for one thing. I actually enjoy a wedge shaped tip on my led pencil. if it's wedged I can turn it to use different sides to get different line angles when I need it to change for me.
Great intro haha. Also I have 3 of the plastic Kuru Toga 0.5mm mechanical pencils that you mentioned and I love it (which is why I have 3). But I mainly use those pencils specifically for writing stuff instead of drawing (although when I'm too lazy to change pencils I will just use that one)
Can we just talk about how awesome it is that he's been using the same Mechanical Pencil in his career. As far as I know it's common for dedicated artists to consider their pencil's apart of themselves, but they will often replace these parts once they break or find a better one. But this guy's pencil has been with him through thick and thin, like they were made for each other. It's the Excalibur to his King Arthur, the Mjolnir to his Thor, the Trusted Weapon to his Valiant Warrior, and I respect that.
I seriously need to get that pencil lol. That is one thing I hate is the lead getting dull on one side. I prefer a mechanical pencil and I also use the 2b pentel lead, that is definitely my go too lead.
Can these mechanical pencils last a long time and if you have a firm grip do you have to work on relaxing the muscles in your hand to draw with it? Thanks
What a refreshing change... and in a fab accent too! Nice one. I’ve rediscovered art having messed about at A level due to too much partying 20 yrs ago. Wonderful to see your honest and extremely knowledgeable approach. Thank you!
My dad got me a Rotring rapid drawing board (it's actually meant for engineering drafting but works great for drawing) and a Rotring isograph college set, that come with 3 isograph technical pens, a Tikky II 0.5 mechanical pencil, ink, HB lead, an eraser and drafting rulers. Some versions come with a drawing compass too. That was a game changer for my art work Before I got used to technical pens and fountain pens for final drawing, I used to use fineliner's like the Sakura Pigma micron (a great quality fineliner but sadly it's disposable, so I have a mountain of empty microns in my room that I need to figure out what to do with, that won't harm the environment, cause tossing them is a big no-no). But now I use technical pens, once you get used to them they are very good and accurate, and for line variation I use a fountain pen with a flex nib or a fude nib, and the best thing about them is that their refillable. It makes me good I'm doing something to reduce landfills and reduce my footprint on environmental impact. The fineliner's I use now are the Copic multiliner SP's, because they're refillable too. I have cut most disposable products from my life at this point and I'm glad I did
I stick to Faber Castell, too. You can send me all your hard pencils if you don't use 'em often enough xD? I really like that function of your mechanical pencil, the turning lead so it stays sharp. I use razors to sharpen my pencils but it's quite inconvenient, the more you study/draw the more you need to sharpen (even though I rotate the pencil as I draw) and most of the time I don't want to stop drawing to get my fine point back. I'm definitely going to invest in one like yours.
hi Dan, Can you let us know what pad you use underneath the bristol paper so as to ensure a smooth outcome of the drawing? I saw something in black with a white grid on it. What was that? Thank you from Bahrain. :)
The more older i get old the more i obsess with ritual thing like coffee and drawing , i absolutely addict to make sketchbook from time to time out of scap paper and day in dayout drawing figure knowing no tomorrow ...what wrong with me ?
Nice video, your drawings are amazing, very detailed. I am just starting out to learn to draw at 47, the problem I have is when I try to draw from my imagination, I have a scene or an object I want to draw, but all what comes from it is that I just draw Cubes, I can never seem to draw what I am thinking. I follow a few books to pick up ideas but the end result is always the same, cubes on my paper, and its becoming very frustrating now. Is there any tips anyone here has or is it just a case of keep at it until things happen?
Hi, very rarely when drawing from imagination does the result have an identical appearance from the picture in your head, it is more of a process that as it is being built on paper keeps feeding back to your imagination and back and forth, it envolves lots of erasing (unless you are drawing something repetitive and that you dominate). Building shapes from basic forms is a good practical approach to develop a drawing, but maybe you are overdoing on the cubes? What very good imagination artist suggest is you only get good at it after you drew a lot from nature. Maybe first try to make study sketches from your subject but use references from pictures, after you make some rudimentary sketches to study and learn the shape, then start going with imagination. Hope this helps
I use the Mars Lumograph 6 pack pencils, that come with all the grades I need, and the Staedtler 900 pencil holder. I bought the metal can pack of the Lumograph once, and now I only get the ones that come in a cardboards pack that are even cheaper, and put them in the tin case. This set up is very affordable and works great for me, I also use mechanical pencils because I like collecting them
I've tried many of them, more than a hundred, and, for me, the Kura Toga was far . The Kura Toga was the one I disliked the most. Your mileage may vary, though, because you apparently use a mechanical pencil in a very limited way, and with a single type of lead. I also thought it was the most uncomfortable pencil I'd ever tried, and this undoubtedly played a part in why I hated it. Even with mechanical pencils, I find the harder H pencils extremely useful. There uses and layering techniques you simply can't do without H pencils, and you can get H lead for mechanical pencils. Anyway, if non-rotating lead were a problem with mechanical pencils, then thousands of artists wouldn't use pencils that don't rotate the lead. It should also be an even bigger problem with a woodcase pencil because it has much thicker lead. I really don't agree about graphite pencils, either. It's all personal choice.. Faber-Castell makes excellent pencils, but so does every other brand. My go to is General's, but I think I have just about every big brand name there is, Staedtler, Derwent, Faber-Castell, Tombow, Caran d'Ache, and Mitsubishi, and I have five brands of cheap Chinese pencils. They're all very good, and the Chinese pencils work every bit as well for me as any of the big brand name pencils. There is no difference in smoothness, and they swatch better than some of the big brands names. I know several pro graphite artists who always use Chinese pencils because they prefer them. I thought they were just being cheap until I tried them. They aren't being cheap. Out of the five brands I have, all are very good, and three of them have much more consistent swatching than Faber-Castell, Derwent, or Staedtler. Only General's, Mitsubishi, and Caran d'Ache did as well. Mitsubishi may have been a touch more consistent, though it may have been my uneven pressure that made it look that way. I have no idea what you mean by "feels like plastic"? What feels like plastic? I don't even understand that. They almost all use the same coating, just in a different color. But even if they did feel like plastic, who cares? Your Kura Toga feels like plastic, too, right? They work well, and that's what matters. Anyway, the best pencil brand in the world always has been, and always will be, whichever brand a particular artist most enjoys using, and a beginner is under no handicap using Chinese pencils. Paper is far more important than pencils, anyway. I agree about the notebook, too. I must have a hundred or more, and I write all the same things down that you do. I also do some light sketching when I'm planning and brainstorming. Some notebooks are fountain pen friendly because I enjoy writing and drawing with a fountain pen, and some aren't. I do love the Tombow Mono Zero. I'm not sure it's any better than the erasers on my Pentel drafting pencils which are almost as thin and made from Pentel Hi-Polymer material, but the Tombow lasts longer and is easier to replace. But it's a close thing. I use rulers, too. One much like yours, and two six inch clear plastic ones that go in pocket kits. Just my take, but I don't like anything digital. To me, that isn't art, any more than copying a reference photo exactly is art. And I've seen AI do digital art brilliantly, even applying originality and imagination. It's just not for me in any way, shape, or form. If I want color in a drawing I'm perfectly capable of putting it in without artificial help.
Hello Dan. Just thought I'd ask, with that accent, are you from Hull? I grew up there myself. Love the channel by the way, I've learnt quite a bit just from your tutorials.
I've been watching you for a while now, and I bought the tombow mono eraser and Bristol board after the first video you gave us on your supplies.... Game. Changer!
Wow... I never thought...digital... i wish i could see your digital drawing...😊😊😊 I love doing digital drawing.. because of this channel I started to do lots of traditional drawing...thank you for that
I have one of the new kuro togas, I love it and is definitely my go to pencil. I feel like I can’t like without painting as it’s part of who I am now, love this video!
Man can we pls have some tutorials of drawings so we can have a thought of how we should draw also i have been using kuru toga roullette and you can look at the pentel orenz the pencil that has 0.2 mm lead size with 0.3 0.5 and 0.7 the pencil has a very good feuture that when you use it the lead sleeve protects the Super fine lead size i hope you can see this comment and make some not human but archetetuaral drawing tutorials keep on what you do best have a nice day
You should have also added about pencils and other art supplies---- Never buy anything "Made In China". Chinese art supplies are absolutely the worst you can get and you are wasting your money. Stick to German/English/European/American/Japanese makers of high quality products, like Faber and Derwent. Even if it's more money, it is worth it.

I ended up getting the special edition spirited away kura toga 😀

My dad got me a Rotring rapid drawing board (it's actually meant for engineering drafting but works great for drawing) and a Rotring isograph college set, that come with 3 isograph technical pens, a Tikky II 0.5 mechanical pencil, ink, HB lead, an eraser and drafting rulers. I found the end of the intro quite funny.
Kuratoga doesn’t work for drawing. For writing yes, but you have to keep it almost horizontally
Try mars lumo black pencils 🖤
Milan are the best erasers!
I have another question for you have you considered packaging and selling your own personal sketch kits

Can you use the pencil extender for charcoal also?
Good sharpener I have that one too.
Please make a tutorial on the drawings of building that you usually do
Do you still have your pencil roll if so can you do a video on it
Your art work is simply amazing ⭐
What pencil do you use?
