  • Virtual Harper Lecture: Seeing the Microbes through the (Kelp) Forest, featuring Jessica Mark Welch and Catherine Pfister. Moderated by Associate Professor Jocelyn Malamy.
Canopy-forming kelp are ecosystem engineers, creating habitat and transforming nutrient cycles in the water along the Pacific coast of North America. The kelp microbiome-the bacteria, diatoms, and other organisms that live in association with kelp-is important for the health and functioning of its host. The nature of the interactions between seaweeds and their microbiomes is still poorly understood but may play a critical role in preserving these ecosystems and expanding the usefulness of kelp and other seaweeds as a source of biofuels and carbon sequestration. Join Catherine Pfister and Jessica Mark Welch to learn about their collaboration to investigate the structure and spatial organization of the kelp microbiome, as part of an effort to understand how these species interactions affect marine ecology and global climate change.
