  • Dr. Smith's bungling has destroyed the Jupiter 2's power generating capability. As a result, there's no juice to recharge the robot. He wanders off to a strange area and grows to gargantuan size. Will is determined to save him, which requires going inside him and dragging Dr. Smith along.

    I enjoy those little interactions you have with Hazel. Sadly, the Robinsons could not abandon Smith because Will and Penny would make a huge fuss. Then John and Maureen would be racked with guilt. Only Don would be sensible about it.

    A good episode, and Smith did seem to care about Will's feelings when they thought they lost the robot. But when they were all trying to get out of the shrinking robot, Smith was once again "Every man for himself!" He refused to help Don whose foot was stuck, and fibbed to John that Will had gotten out. Curious that when they'd all gotten out and the robot shrank back to normal size, the plate that they'd removed to enter was back on. Still a charming episode.

    When I was a kid I could overlook some of the obvious stuff such as why the Robot had a floor when he was laying on his back. But I recall asking my Dad how Smith got a banana! Knowing that the Jupiter 2 seems to contain anything they want such as a cash register and Smith's nightshirt and cap I could chalk that up the having been in the cavernous storage shown on the fusion core level. But they couldn't have brought fresh bananas with them. I think that by this time in the series they gave up any pretense of science or logic and just went for broke with the silly stories. Still.....this was one of the more imaginative and fun episodes of season 2!

      If they have such advanced tech as their propulsion, laser, food and clothes processors, it isn't too much of a stretch to believe they have rudimentary replicator tech as well. The issue for them isn't so much the idea of having enough food and supplies as it is to have enough POWER.

    At the point 6:01 That is a good question you posed Dave Irving. Why is Will taking that arch idiot Doctor Smith. I reckon Will would be better off taking his sister Penny instead. For a start Penny is more braver than Doctor Smith and Penny does not think of herself anywhere near as much as Smith does. Doctor Smith is always complaining. Penny very rarely complains about anything.

    Dave Irving At 11:43 you said Doctor Smith is a big baby. It is a miracle nobody who resides on the Jupiter 2 has called Doctor Smith a baby. My conclusion to that is that the Robinsons must be a very polite family and more civilized than the Waltons. If it was the Walton family Ben would not hesitate to call Doctor Smith a baby. Ben was the one I like the best. Ben was the least goody-goody out of the Walton children.

    One of my favorite episodes as a child (along with War of the Robots, and Wreck of the Robot -- I think there may be a theme). Something about the whole motivation of the plot device in this episode only now occurs to me. They cannot recharge the robot until repairs are made to the ship. So he has to sacrifice himself as his power slowly drains out? That is the only solution? Why not simply remove his power pack (as they do countless times in the series) to deactivate him safely and painlessly, until power is again available to recharge it? Seriously, no one thought of this?

    I have to admit, this was always my favorite episode of the series, even as a kid. Mainly because I was fascinated by the robot (in fact, one Christmas a toy of it was on my list, but my parents couldnt find it). Going through the interior seemed like a fun excursion, and I'd probably have done it too, if I had a pet robot. Of course Smith was next to useless, but we've come to expect that, so I mostly ignored him. Seeing all the processors, tape banks and various internal "components" was interesting, although none of that would have been inside a "real" robot. At the time this was made, transistors were just becoming a thing, and microprocessors didnt even exist, so the large tape machines are shown any time you see computers (ie Star Trek, Time Tunnel, even Wonder Woman).
    Campy, yes, but this show had become camp by this point. Batman proved that camp worked. And by this time, the show was pretty much the Dr Smith, Robot and Will show, so naturally they were featured with the others as supporting characters. Judy got all of about 3 lines, if that, and not sure Penny even spoke. Liked when Will changed around some of the burned out components (that "heart" always got me too), but the end really stretched it when they held it open with a tree to keep it so Will could escape. It looked too small from the outside until he was squeezing through, then it suddenly got big enough. And that plate they took off didnt shrink as well (nor did the bolts), so now he has a big hole in his tread section, unless they have a new part.

    • @dwashbur
      @dwashbur  4 года назад

      Agreed about the tape machines, I just wondered how tiny they were once the robot was back to normal size.
      I am glad they didn't have him filled with vacuum tubes.

    • @jsimpers
      @jsimpers 4 года назад +2

      Well, at one point they were doing something with his tapes. They were in a little flap in the front torso, near the connection to the legs. They were small reels, about the size of the mini-tapes they used to make for Walkman and answering machines (yes, I'm that old).

  • @Live_long_and_prosper-1
    @Live_long_and_prosper-1 3 года назад +3

    Interesting that all the tape machines are facing the right way up, even though the robot is on his back. Also there is steam and moving parts inside the robot, really? What about that toolbox that Will brought in, it will be forever stuck inside the robot.

    3:09. Apples and bananas. Neither are grown by the J2 crew. But there was a produce store right down the street from 20th Century Fox. 3:30. You found a continuity gaffe in an Irwin Allen TV show. Oh my. This episode is a recycled prop extravaganza. 8:28. Good one, Mr. B. 9:08. I think Mr. Keema had one of those. 13:04. Any tools left inside The Robot will break something when The Robot shrinks back to normal size. 13:25. Stargazer shakes her head in disbelief. Because even she cannot believe that The Robot is dead. 14:28. I think that they are stuck in Noble Neolani's arch. But it is turned upside down. 16:30. Speaking of recycled props, I think Mr. OM had one of those. I hope Judy remembers to press the blue button, the black button, and then the green button, or else The Robot might blow up the way the J2 did at the beginning of the episode. In "The Phantom Family", there is a great blooper where Don bumps his head on one of Lemnoc's weapons. Please include this in your video review of that episode.

    A King Solomon solution! beautiful! I love the half a wheel it's better than nothing, I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time! That was so funny I love your edgy humor I love it when it's on the edge, and I also love that from each episode you're getting more and more irritated about the stupidity of the Robinsons and Dr Smith and their combined stupidity together as well not to mention the robots sporadic stupidity and along with the stupidity of the aliens and assorted visitors and other space saps! It reminds me of a Seinfeld episode, like a not that you're old and I don't mean it like that but I just recording the line, like an old man trying to send Sue back in her cafeteria! anyway I love your show I love this episode in particular for that line alone is worth the price of admission! John tried to explain to Maureen better than none! Oh my God the Italian cannibal subgenre of movies is calling you! I love you and I love your show I love the Green hornet episodes I wish there was more than just the few seconds of clips that you're allowed to give some other shows but I have a request I don't know if you're taking requests but what do you think about doing Mr terrific? or Captain nice? Oh my God they brought stupidity to new levels I mean they made it like almost a food group! What about Star trek the original series, maybe not every episode but I have some favorites that I'd love to hear a serious commentary on like patterns of force, the Doomsday machine, return of the archons, and possibly the gunfight at the okay corral the name of the episode escapes me. But those were probably my favorites oh and tribbles. The trouble with triggers. anyway I know it would be hard to give the trouble of tribbles a serious commentary but how about just a commentary and also have you ever seen demon with a glass hand? Harlan Ellison's outer limit episode well one of his episodes, I would like to see or hear I mean or both what you think of that episode and why and also I can't wait for the third season to here you go about on about especially when they get to castles in space or ice castles or whatever the hell that episode was called you know the one with the silver Frito bandito. Also what was the what's the episode where he turns to the Jupiter into a Dr Smith turns the Jupiter into a hotel for for Fritz felts bank robbing brainwashing tourists? Oh my God I'd like to see you do Westworld 2 the movie but anyway, I'm really enjoying your Green hornet take I liked the Green hornet I thought it had a lot of potential I thought it the actors and the directing was a lot better than the the skimpy production and marketing that it fell victim to.
