They traded Ocon for Jack! Why would Alpine be satisfied with Jack merely not crashing. Esteban and Pierre were pretty evenly matched. Expectations have to be high! Not sure how much sponsorship money he brings to the table but that’s also a consideration. I predict that Franco will be in the seat by the mid season break.
Franco would have been given some sort of assurance that he would be driving in the car. Otherwise I'm sure he wouldn't have signed. And like you say, why would he sit in the garage for a couple of years? He may as well have stayed at Williams if he was going to do that
This is my personal opinion on Jack doing he needs to take his time. It’s a marathon not a sprint if you constantly keeps the car parking forward I think they’ll keep him and he gets put on the board.
You made some excellent points! There is no reason why they would hire Franco and have him just sit in the garage and not do anything for 2 years. Even though nothing has been specifically said, Jack full well knows that he's under the microscope and at signs of consistent mistakes or underperformance, Franco will come in.

The Alpine was only good in the wet because it was heavier than the other cars

If f1 has a pool of talent sitting in it or around it, it's a good reason to have 24 drivers on the grid rather then 20 or even the 22 of next year.
