@@GardenStateTortoise do you still have your manouria emys or yuwonoi? I remember you were trying to breed yuwonoi and your manouria had built a nest many years ago now. Those species are of particular interest to me (in addition to forstens) so would be great to have an update!
I feel so terrible for Tortoises and Turtles, they got it so bad in this eroding world and easily the most forgotten species, I'm so glad there's people like you and others that dont forget the small slow guys, they truly need all the prayers and help. 🙏❤
It just boggles my mind that there was a critically endangered tortoise walking down the street😮 I’m so glad that she’s with you guys now! And I hope that your Indian star tortoise gets better quickly! Please keep us posted on both of these beauties❤
Thanks to both of you for saving this beautiful tortoise girl!! She sure doesn't belong on the NY streets of all places! She has a very cute face and looks in great shape as you said!
@@GardenStateTortoise I can’t understand why so many Americans can’t tell the difference between a Tortoise and a Turtle. Originally I assumed it was just a misnaming problem but was horrified to see a video of two young men throwing a Tortoise into a lake, it wasn’t malicious, they really thought that they were helping. Since then I’ve made myself unpopular on some sm groups!!
I can't believe it. 😢😢😢 Thank you for rescuing her!!!! I still do not understand how a government can allow exporting quotes on an animal that is critically endangered.

YES! Some people will keep them in their yard for the summer and she may have escaped. I think I would keep an ad up on a local marketplace site, just in case the owner is still looking & didn't see thier ads.
I am also from Indonesia, and as far as I know, this species is very prone to stress and prefers high humidity. I am quite amazed this beauty can survive the NY climate!
I found a Indian star tortoise on the side of the road in November in New Hampshire a couple years ago he's now living an awesome life in Southern Florida
This is a new species to me, so cool! I'm so happy she came into your hands. You guys are never not busy, everything you do is awesome and I learn something new with each video. ❤
Just a second suggestion re: a name for this girl in case 'Liberty' doesn't fly: Tootsie (considering her love for toes and where she was found.) I'm so glad she was rescued! Live a long life, little lady; you landed on all four feet.
Liberty suits her. It's a stately, upper-crust sort of name for such a stately-looking miss. It's great that she was found in great condition before things got worse.
Crazy find wandering NY! We have picked up Sulcata, Red foots and Russians crossing roads or in people's backyards over here in WNY. We hope the new arrival adjust well and the star tortoise has a full recovery! Great work as always Chris and Casey!🐢
Chris & Casey 🐢❤️ That was such a great episode! Finding Liberty 🗽 was definitely a miracle before she got hurt or worse. If I was just a little younger I would fly to New Jersey to adopt Liberty myself. She's Beautiful ❤️ I have never heard of a forestini turtle 🐢? I know there are thousands of different species of turtles/tortoises 🐢 wandering around in the wrong place. But thank goodness 🙏 Liberty found her way to you. Hope the Star ⭐ tourtise makes a full speedy recovery 🤞Thank you for what you do for turtles/tortoises 🐢 everywhere ❤! Love you both 😘❤
I have been butt-bit by a box turtle (they closed their plastron by the back leg on my finger). That hurt like heck! They held on for what felt like forever and I was beginning to thing I was going to have to live the rest of my life with a turtle attached to me. ;)
Aww, I hope it’s nothing serious and she’s feeling better soon! Thanks for taking us along, it was informative and interesting. Also hope your new addition adjust well, which I’m sure she will. 🐢🐢💕👍
Amazing that tortoise survived out in the cold. Goes to show you the wisdom of the Creator. Hope the Star tortoise makes a full recovery. I just wonder how she got sick.
It happens, she could have eaten something, been bitten by something, irritated the area and caused infection etc, they’re not all that different from us.
So happy you found her ,she's precious. I own a Russian dessert tortoise who escape out of my yard a couple of times. Once right before the winter and was gone outside the whole time and reappeared again in March in my yard. He had made it through a bad winter. They do hibernate like bears when in the wild. Then he got out this summer and was found by our meter reader in the street in front of my house. They are very resilient creatures and our fun to own Thankyou for saving her.🐢🐢🐢
great job on the rescue! Hopefully some well-meaning tortoise breeders can get together and breed Forsten's Tortoise in enough numbers that there won't be a need to import more from Sulawesi.
Hi bro, i am from indonesia. Glad to know you will take care of the forsteni, i am your subscriber and very happy to watch your tortoise care Warm regards from your indonesia fans
I wish people would take the time to learn about the needs and proper care of an animal Before they get it! Too many put more time researching things like a gaming system or a motorbike than they do a living creature they bring into their homes.
We had a Russian tortise he escaped many years ago . im so glad he can adapt in Missouri but I haven't cn him ive looked everywhere hoping to find him .
I can’t stand it when I see one on the side of the road, not on the road, and somebody has run over it! They literally had to go off the road to kill this animal. And it just absolutely makes me sick. That shows There mentality.
Was she looking for the Ninja Turtles in NYC? You should name her Mona Lisa... A nearby town Selkirk is having a domesticated rabbit population because people keep dumping them there.
It’s honestly hard to put into words but broader, lower carapace is the main giveaway and the head has more dark areas to it than the others typically do. Also, most forstenii tend to have high black content on the shell compared to the others.
They tried for weeks to find the owner. Not the first time a forsten’s has been ditched or given away. An adult female was given away for free on Craigslist some years back and a friend ended up getting her. Doesn’t matter the species, plenty of people just don’t care and throw them away.
@GardenStateTortoise if this were a common Tortoise to care for, it'd make perfect sense for someone to let it go in the wild. I just bet something happened to an enclosure or someone left a gate open. It's so hard to believe someone would ditch This Tortoise.
Did they try to see if it’s someone’s escaped pet they’re looking for? Maybe she wasn’t even dumped? I ask because I know people still looking for their tortoise.
I have a question, i have a russian tortoise right now, hes still young, but when it turns older and it has to leave its enclosure, what ground is the best in the garden for him to dig in? (Sand, gravel, grind, mud etc. Etc)?
Unfortunately there’s no legal way to breed her to benefit the wild populations but she can be bred to preserve the species further in captive management which is of course just as important and we will aim for that.
@@ChicagoMel23 CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species), US fish and wildlife and the countries of origin will not allow it. Once an animal has left the wild, whether it was legal or not, it’s considered “tainted” and too high of a risk to put back or cross-contaminate the wild population.

Nobody just let this Tortoise go in New York, something happened. I bet it'd be super easy to find out who was caring for this Tortoise previously.

0:07 clearly someone dumped it. Was likely smuggled in illegally & they dumped her so they wouldn't get caught
