Thank you so much for this video. I followed your video and i could easily install an SSD and modify my DVD Caddy to hold my old HDD. Now the OS boots up very fast and all my applications open up quickly, which is exactly what i wanted :)
@@karso007 hi mate, i'm looking for one of this for my Pc as well, but my answer is, the one you linked above from aliex... doesn't have the place in the back to screw the caddy to the board... as you can see him doing on the video. how does it stays attached to the pc? because if its lose it can fall very easy...
Thanks for this video!! I have an X450LN, which apparently has a few extra screws to remove, which kinda confused me. But all in all it was the same, this video gave me courage to even try to do it lol!
+Илья Бессмертный It seems that i can't reply to your comment...again the "linked comment" thing. I didn't upgrade the ram on this laptop. Some user sad that 8gb is the max ram supported (4gb on board + 4 gb on the free slot) and some sad that 12gb are ok (8gb on the free slot + 4gb on board). I would have tested this but for now i don't have the money for this operation :)). If you make the upgrade you should stick with the on board ram frequency. The optical drive is 9.5 mm (check this video to see how you can measure it: 2nd hdd caddy size).
anonyme secrete Yeah, I'm actually thinking to do the same thing with a similar model, but I've read conflicting things: some info says that it's max 8gb, but I've also read that it's 4gb soldered + 4gb - so in theory I can upgrade that second 4gb to 8gb, no? Good video though.
I have the same laptop and every time I try to install Windows 8 on a SSD, the BIOS doesn't recognize it and never boots to windows correctly. Can get to Windows eventually but constantly blue screens and returns to BIOS after sitting awhile. However it boots fine when I use a regular HDD. Anyone else this issue?
u ve to change ur old SSD i had same problem emailed to Asus support TR. They said some old ssd not work and uptade ur bios to BIOS 303 my kingston ssd (6 years old) is not work for instaling OS. i bought evo 750 (256gb) working good on 8.1 and windows 10
I've successfully installed a HDD caddy and put in my old HDD with Windows 8.1. Everytime i reboot (only reboot!) my notebook the harddisk make weird noise (wirte-read-head?). Like fast power off/on the HDD. This dont happen when i shut down the notebook. Do you have a solution?
I just installed an SSD and replaced the DVDROM unit with the HDD and I hear the same sound you are describing. Could you tell me if something happened with your HDDs some time after the upgrade? Thank you!
Yes, you only need to swap the HDD with a SSD. When I made this video the SSD's were a bit expensive and I needed the extra space from the HDD for storage, hence the replacement of the optical drive. If you don't need the extra space then the swap is all you need to do.
Hi! Thank you for this vídeo. I have a question... why didnt you place the new ssd in the CD instead of changing the hdd position? Wouldnt it be e Easier? Thanks!
The dvd-rw connection is SATA II, and has 3gb/s. The HDD connection is SATA III with 6gb/s. So, if you want to get the max speed out of the ssd you have to put it instead of the hdd (sata III).
danythe007 Hi again! I think you didnt understood me. Maybe it is easier to place the Ssd into the cd rom. In this way you dont have to change the hdd position...
You didn't understood me. If you put the SSD in the optical drive bay you will not get the max speed out of your SSD. And if you will get an SSD that is limited by the connection with the MB whats the point to do the upgrade?
mine Asus X550VX, for choosing the right caddy what should we do first before buying the second caddy for an upgrade. Mine exactly the same inches as your, ehh 15' maybe?
Why did you switch the location of the HDD to the place of the optical drive, and put the SSD to the place of the HDD? Can't u just put the SSD to the place of the potical drive?
The dvd-rw connection is SATA II, and has 3gb/s. The HDD connection is SATA III with 6gb/s. So, if you want to get the max speed out of the ssd you have to put it instead of the hdd (sata III).
Might be a dumb comment BUT, if I just want to replace the HDD with an SSD all I really have to do is buy an SSD that fits and just unscrew a couple of screws right? Don't have to remove the whole optical drive and whatnot?
I've bought a new SDD for the laptop - Intel 535 (240gb). Iv'e replaced the HDD with the new SSD - but the only OS intaller to detect the SSD is Windows 7.Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04 installers don't detect the SSD.. Even though it appears on the BIOS.
+Borza Paul Put back the HDD and see if the OS installer of win 8-10 recognize it. Maybe the OS installer has some drivers missing?? If the HDD is recognized then try reseting the BIOS with the SSD connected. Set to AHCI mode after reset. If still not solved try to update BIOS to latest version.
+danythe007 I did all this things but the problem still persist. Also i updated the BIOS to latest version. As i said earlier it only works with Windows 7. Do you have any other idea why windows 10 installer doesn't detect the SSD?
Borza Paul I think that win 8-10 installation is missing a driver. You have a dvd with the OS or you have made a bootable usb? When you try to install it, at the part where you should see the partitions, what do you see? Do you have a button below so you could load drivers?
Borza Paul Try loading the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) driver at the partitions window. For some people, this seems to work. You could try to make the bootable usb with another program WinSetupFromUSB, Rufus or any other program for this task.
Hello. Can you please tell me what is format-size of the hard disk inside lap top - original place. i just want to replace existing hard disk - HDD for SSHD. Is it 3.5" or 2.5"? My lap top is Asus x550C. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much. Is there anything that I must prepare before and after changing of hard disk? As I understand all I need to do is just replace hard disk and install win.
I have the same laptop X550 it's possible to change the graphic card? I bought 8GB Ram and 480gb Kingston SSD and worked well. I didn't open the laptop from inside as you did because I need the DVD. other then that great work mate and thanks for the caddy adapter for future change! :D
Hello, I have the X550DP Model(A10-5750M 2.5GHz Processor) . I want to add a SODIMM but it seems like I have the SAMSUNG 800 MHz welded on my motherboard. Will it be ok if I add a SODIMM with higher clock speed? Will it cause issues? I want to increase my RAM but not sure about the clock speeds. Suggestions are welcome.
I think that your laptop model is the same as mine (motherboard layout), so it has only one sata connection for hdd and one for the dvd. You have to give up to one of them to add the ssd.
Hi! great video but I have a question, Is it ok if I just put a SSD of 120 Gb just for the system and the HDD of 1 Tb for the files, etc?? or does the SSD need being higher? then which is the minimum required capaacity of the SSD for the system? because I have little mount of money. Sorry for my bad eanglish. Thank you.
Hi Franco! If you will use your SSD only for the operating system and programs, not for games or anything else, 120gb will be more than enough. My SSD after 5 months of usage, with windows 8 64bit, drivers, programs, has 50gb free space. If you will install only windows, drivers and a few programs, i think you could manage with a SSD of 60gb, but in my opinion the 120gb is better.
Yo Danythe007 i have a question too, could I just put an SSD instead of a HDD and use an external HDD and be fine? or do i need to have a HDD in my laptop?
nice video! I would like to do the same thing but on a Asus X554LA-XO1236D. Do you know if it's possible? Can't find an answer to this. Also which size of the caddy should I take?
+Federico Vendramin Does it have an optical drive? If the answer is yes, than you can do this type of upgrade. Check this video for the size of the caddy: ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html If you don't have an optical drive you could replace the hdd wih an ssd for better perfomance, but in this case you will lose the extra space given by the hdd..
Federico Vendramin I didn't find until now an optical drive that can't be removed. It should have a screw on the back cover or inside the laptop like in my video.
After installing the ssd and hdd with the caddy adapter, everything worked good and it detected the unit without problem. My surprise has been when turning off the computer, Windows is closed but the computer remains on with the active power LED. If I keep pressing the power button 5 seconds later, the computer shuts down completely.
I've heard that some types of caddy's are having this problem. Check if the caddy has a jumper or a buton somewhere. If you find any, move the jumper on the other pins or change the position of the button...this should solve the problem.
Great, this one helps very much for my f550jk, which looks pretty the same except for the outside design.. opened it earlier and the internal components are the same. After fitting the hard disk in the optical drive, do I have to change the boot settings from BIOS or it's automatically recognized? Thanks a lot for this.
Hi Dany! I have a question. Does your laptop get warm sometimes? I dont know if putting HDD in the optical drive slot will cause that the temperature increase in that zone.
@@danythe007 hi boss. For asus a550L 1)dvd caddy to hold hdd which is the correct size 9mm or 9.5mm or 12.7mm 2)for RAM upgrade which type should i go. DDR3 or DDR3L, 1.5V or 1.35V? Thanks boss
Hello Friend how are you? Please, I need some information ... What are the dimensions of the Caddy for the Asus X550Ln notebook? I need to buy one to do just like you did in your video
Hello Friend. The size for the caddy should be 9.5mm but if you want to be sure you can measure it. Check my video (please watch video with annotations on!): ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html
Hi! I have an Asus K550JX-X033H, and the 12,7" hdd-into-optical adapter that I bought is too fat to fit. I have seen that your x550 has the same descending shape at the optical drive, and I'm wondering if it has the same size too... Your caddy is 9,5" or 9,7"? Does it provide a shape to make the internal DVD now removed into external? What model would you suggest me to buy? Thank you. (The drive is: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8G6)
+Ciccio Reda Hi! My caddy is 9.5mm (check this video, the second optical drive is from my laptop ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html). When you buy it, you get just the caddy, no external usb adapter for the optical drive. If you need one you can buy it separately. And for the model...I don't know what to say. This are some cheap China adapters (2nd hdd caddy on ebay) so, most of them are unbranded. Just pay attention to the size (9.5mm), the type of connection (sata to sata) and the build quality (the outer case should be made from aluminium or some metal composite, not plastic).
Hi Ruben. Do you mean the 2nd hdd caddy? Search on ebay for "2nd hdd caddy 9.5" or check this examples: www.ebay.com/itm/1PC-Universal-9-5mm-2-5-SATA-2nd-HDD-Hard-Driver-Caddy-For-CD-DVD-Optical-Bay-/261511499919?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ce34cd08f or www.ebay.com/itm/2-5-SATA-Universal-9-5mm-2nd-HDD-Hard-Driver-Caddy-For-CD-DVD-Optical-Bay-/111486057723?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f5163cfb or www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-2nd-Sata-HDD-Aluminum-Caddy-Adapter-For-Apple-Macbook-Pro-Screwdriver-/281349419385?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4181bb7179
+Satish Mistry Hello. I don't know why, but it seems that i cannot answer to your questions directly (maybe you linked your comments to a social network or you have disabled the reply option). So...For the ram upgrade, i don't know the max ram size you can install, but other people i talked to, sad that 8gb work fine. The empty slot for ram is on my video at 0:18, see video with annotations on (I don't have a ram to make a tutorial about upgrading). For the SSD part and the operating system: your SSD will come with a cloning software and you will be able to clone your OS partition from the HDD to the SSD (if you really want to do this). After you successfully cloned the OS partition you can delete it from you HDD and use the clone from the SSD. Anyway my advice for you is to install a fresh copy of the OS on the SSD, it will perform better than your old OS from the HDD. Here are some tips to optimize your SSD: www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/storage/12-ssd-tips-to-optimise-your-drive-s-performance-943984 and www.tweakhound.com/2012/11/14/windows-8-ssd-settings-etc/.
Thats weird o.0, but thanks I was confused since when that slot had already been taken by ram so it must have been supplied when i first bought the laptop. I was also wondering if there is space to add a bluetooth card, Im not sure what to buy for a bluetooth part to the laptop or if it will fit :) would be great if you could help and thanks again!!! :D
I didn't see a slot for bluetooth when i disassembled my laptop (maybe i missed it?) and i didn't find anything online about this subject. I rarely use bluetooth....do you really need it? You could buy a mini-usb bluetooth device...
Flamster The caddy is universal and it will work with your model. You just need to pay attention to the size of it (9.5mm or 12.7mm) and the type of connection to the MB (sata or older ata/pata). In your case, you need a caddy with sata to sata connection and 9.5mm height (the same as the one in my video). Check this examples from ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-Universal-SATA-2nd-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-for-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-SN-/161691941125?hash=item25a5973905 www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-SATA-2nd-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-For-9-5mm-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-/281709834873?hash=item419736f279
I have a problem with my caddy 9.5mm. I discovered that it does not allow me to turn off the computer. In some forums they say it is a problem of a caddy circuit pin which is to be removed. To you it has ever happened to this thing? With the caddy that advice to buy ASUS X550 persists this issue?
danythe007 i solved. I found out that there is a switch in the caddy near sata: left for HP/ Sony, middle for DELL/IBM and right for all other brand computer.
I think it will fit but if you want to be sure you could measure the optical drive. Check my video on how to measure the optical drive (to see what 2nd hdd adapter you need to buy): ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html
Hi! my toshiba hdd from my x550c is not working properly anymore and i have found this seagate ( SSHD Laptop Seagate FireCuda™ 2.5" 1TB, 8GB NAND, 5400 rpm, 128MB cache, SATA III ) and i want to know if it is compatible with my sistem. the toshiba hdd is Toshiba MQ01ABD100, 1TB, 5400 rpm, 8MB, SATA 3. Can you please help me with an answer? Thank you very much! Alex
Hi Alex! The SSHD you mentioned is ok, it will work with your laptop but it won't give you the same performance as the combination of a pure SSD and a separate HDD for data storage. With this SSHD you will get windows and maybe 1 or 2 programs loading faster but the rest of them will load with the speed of normal hdd at 5400rpm.
Hi, I've got a K450 (the "same" model as yours, but the 14" variant) and it does not have cover to remove the HDD to be replaced with and SSD, so I might need to fully disassemble the unit. My question is, did you find any warranty seals or any other possible way for ASUS to know if your computer has been disassembled? Thanks
Hi, I didn't find any seals. Check the manual for your model. If they offer instructions on how to replace or upgrade the hdd, its safe to do the upgrade and should't void your warranty. But for safety use some rubber on the tip of the screwdriver...doing this will not leave any marks on the screws:).
hello, i have a Asus x550vx laptop. its size is very similar to that model. i7 6700hq geforce 950m and 1 tb hdd. im curious about that can i apply the same to my laptop. Is this true all i need 9.5 mm hdd caddy and ssd? Thanks a lot for video.
Check if your laptop has the 9.5mm or the 12.7mm optical drive (ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html). For this upgrade you need the caddy (with the right size) and the ssd.
how did you install the windows with all the drives? cause i did the same to my pc (we have the same pc model) and all the drives were uninstalled. thanks for the video.
danythe007 it does, it's in the software part that the thing doesn't work so good, like the Touchpad, card reader, usb port and i don't understand why. thanks for the reply.
ricardorslp7 It seems that the drivers don't work... What version of windows have you installed? win 7, 8, 32 bit or 64? Did you install all the drivers? For my laptop, i made a iso image of the original driver dvd. After installing windows, all the drivers were installed from that iso image. You could try to reinstall all the drivers from the original driver dvd...or you could download them from asus website.
I am confused as to where i should install the ram, since i cant find the free slots on my laptop - x550 - is it possible to make a video on ram upgrade ? Thanks :)
I don't know if you void your warranty or not. On Asus website i found that upgrading your laptop ram or hdd doesn't affect the warranty...but the official service in my country sad that i will void my warranty if i upgrade my laptop at home and they asked 30 euro to make this upgrade at them. So i used a piece of rubber on the tip of my screwdriver and i made the upgrade myself :)). I didn't leave any marks on the screws so i don't think that they will observe anything...
Please can you check and tell me with your experience whether below items will match each other for the upgrade? laptop - Asus X550LA (i5 4200U 1.6GHz, 4GB, 750GB, shared VGA) caddy - ebay product ID 261511499919 SSD - ebay product ID 331105442222
The hdd caddy is 9.5mm , sata to sata adapter. Check my video and measure it yourself if you want to be sure: ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html Also check this link for more information: hddcaddy.eu/which-hdd-caddy-for-my-laptop/
okay xD But do you remember why it died? I had to replace the battery twice within 4 years of using. The first time might because my laptop fell to the ground. The 2nd one, no idea.
Kaito Daiki I don't know why but one of the four litium cells inside the battery died. The voltage of that cell droped below 2 volts. I tried to replace that cell but the protection circuit has some kind of memory and will not allow to use again the battery.
I think its the same as mine: 9.5mm. But to be sure you could measure the optical drive inside your laptop. Check my video on how to do it (read the description of the video): ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html

Hey man, I just got the caddy, but am a little bit confused on how to take off the keyboard to get to the cd drive. Do I need to take out any screws before taking the keyboard off, or does it just pop out? (I already installed my ssd). I tried taking it off with a credit card, but it wouldn't pop off, so before I force it, I just wanted to be sure there arent any extra screws I need to take out. (You only took out 2 in the video and I am worried you might have had to take out more and you just edited it out) I am just really worried about screwing something up...
I bought mine online. It doesn't have any model number. You can find on ebay...search for hdd caddy 9.5mm sata (ex: www.ebay.com/itm/SATA-2nd-HDD-HD-Hard-Driver-Caddy-for-9-5mm-Universal-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-/280824740531?pt=US_Drive_Bay_Caddies&hash=item4162757ab3)
kinobla94 Your primary HDD is a SATA 3 device, so the slot/interface on the motherboard is a SATA 3, and this can get data transfer speed up to 600 Mb/s. On the other hand the optical drive doesn't always have the same slot/interface as the HDD on the motherboard...so it could be a SATA 2 (or 1), mainly because it doesn't need that much speed for data transfer as the hdd. So, if you put a SATA 3 SSD on a SATA 2 interface you will get only up to 300 Mb/s. And you should think about build quality on 2nd hdd caddy...sometimes the caddy itself could limits the data speed transfer. My advice: put the SSD instead of your primary HDD (this way you'll be sure that you get the max potential of your SSD), and the HDD on the 2nd hdd caddy. The HDD will work perfectly if the caddy is acceptable quality. The speeds you get on SATA 2 is more than enough for the HDD. If someone thinks that i'm wrong with the information above, feel free to comment. Here's a link with the differences between sata interface: @8142.
+Danial Rohmat It should work on your model too. You will need a screwdriver to disassemble the laptop, optional some rubber band (to put on the screwdriver head, if you don't want to leave marks on the screws), the caddy, the SSD and some patience (don't force anything when you disassemble the case of the laptop; don't forget to remove all the screws).
+qwertyBOB Remove the SSD and leave only the HDD in the optical bay, and then check if the bios recognize the HDD. If not check the connection between the HDD and the caddy and/or the caddy and the motherboard. Try to update/reset the bios. If nothing works it could be the caddy itself and you need to buy another one.
Question, when doing this do i need to back up my files? Or I don't need to do it since im still installing my old hdd? I hope i get a response my 5 year old asus x550lb is slow af now 😂
If you have important files and don't want to risk losing them I suggest you to do a backup. In my case I didn't do any backup. I did a fresh install of windows OS on my ssd. After I made sure that the OS is working fine I deleted the old partition from the hdd that contained windows files. The unallocate space resulted from this was used to extend the second partition from the hdd on wich were my files that I wanted to keep.
I curently have an Asus x550JK with 4 Gb of ram build-in and i added 8 more Gigs, but for me it seems to work even harder, and now that i read about that conflict, i will document more, but for sure it can view 16 gigs, or at least my one... and for ssd, any recomandation , as a price performance good ratio ? with some links
So... Did any one get the number of that VISA? Honestly, good video. I'm thinking about getting this laptop. Where did you get that HDD bay? Thanks for the video.
A neat trick on that HDD, didnt know you could replace a discreader with hdd, i think im going to do the same on my x550ln, can you share a link on that one?
Here are some id's on ebay for the adapter: 261511499919, 360965001787, 111486057723, 281349419385. For the upgrade part I think your laptop is identical to mine, just different hardware inside. Follow my video and be careful to remove all the screws and do not apply excessive force if something is stuck. Double check everything :). Good luck!
danythe007 Thanks! Just took mine apart to check everything was the same, and it was. Looks like it a green light for the upgrades. Do you perhaps know if the video card can be changed on this laptop?
+Zeferinix Lihunger It seems that i cannot answer directly to your comment, it is a linked comment. When mixing different RAM types you will always be put on the lowest MHz. So in your case it will be 800 MHz. It shouldn't cause any problems. Check this topic here if you want to find out more info: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090601072248AAv9K12
I just read this, I thought I didn't get a reply since there was no notifs XD came back to this vid since I was planning to upgrade my storage along with the RAM so it'd be on one go Question though: 1. Is that HDD 3.5" or 2.5"? Can't tell. 2. Can I possibly re-use my current HDD in the laptop? I'm pretty sure laptops use the 2.5" HDDs so if yes, that'd be great but from what I can see in the vid, it looks like a 3.5". ============================ After tons of research, I finally found the proper variant model of my laptop. It's a X550DP-XX048H and I find it weird since there are 10 screws below my laptop and 1 on the center + 2 on the batteries which is not the same X550DP in your video. 4 on corners 2 (1 on each side, left and right) 1 between the lower corners (bottom center, just right below the touch pad) 2 on the battery 1 on the center (weird) and the battery is not removable directly since it's screwed so until now, I haven't made any upgrades since I'm afraid to open it, the center screw bothers me a lot because it seems like the center screw is connected to the motherboard. Maybe I should ask for a technician to do the upgrades, I can't find a tutorial that has the same screw setup as this variant :(
Do you guys think this will work with my Asus f550cc?? (Putting the SSD in.) I've also seen that my laptop is very similar to the Asus x550. I think it is the same but newer model. Thank You, Vinhzo
hi:) Please tell me what size the size of the adapter need to buy? 12.7 mm? I have the same laptop model that you have. Sorry for my English I am from Russia
So 1x250gb ssd, 1x1tb HDD and a total of 12gb RAM will not cause it problems? Cus right now I am wondering should I just buy a 1TB SSD and 8 GB RAM and completly replace my currant HDD.
It will. My model - asus x550jk xo012d has 4gb soldiered and a slot that support another 8gb for a max of 12gb RAM. I've actually called ASUS to confirm this and they did confirm it.
I don't know. Some people said that it will void your warranty, some people said that doesn't. You could talk with the official asus service in your area and ask them.
After about 4-6 hours of playing games (NFS The Run/ BF3/Darksiders etc) the CPU max temp was at about 76 degrees celsius (the GPU temp was roughly the same as the CPU). The cooling system does its job well and pretty silent too. I will make a video with temperature review in the future...now i don't have time to do it, i'm busy with my other projects :).
Hey thanks for the video it's very helpful! my question to you Danythe007 is by installing both the SSD+HDD was there any negative affects towards battery performance, or can this overwork the battery possibly make it overheat?
+J.A. montelongo I didn't see any negative impact on the battery (and overheating in this case doesn't exists). The SSD in general should consume less power than the HDD. Plus, the HDD gets in sleep mode when is not in use, so the power consumption at that point is even low than the original setup. Search for power consumption on SSD and HDD if you need mode details.

Can you help me? I tried to install my late k53sv's 4gb ram module into this one and it just won't work, not even shown in BIOS. (It works in other laptops) Is it due to the speed difference? (1333mhz vs 1600mhz). It would be a shame though, since ol'k53sv took even older 800 mhz ram like a trooper.
+AceOfClubsHUN 1: Reset BIOS without the module and/or with the module inside the laptop. See if anything changes. 2. Update BIOS. 3. Check the connection between the module and the MB...maybe is a problem with the pins on the MB or something doesn't fit on place...
danythe007 So the point is: in theory, it should work, right? It's not incompatible on default. If that's the case, I'll try my luck with the 3rd option, since I'm already through 1st and second one. How do these pins look like? I'm not illiterate when it comes to tinkering with computers, but I tried to leave the motherboard alone by this far. Last but not least, thank you for your detailed and surprisingly fast answer .
+AceOfClubsHUN I've looked again at my video and I don't think you can see the pins on the MB. Clean the pins on the module. Check the position of the module inside the connector on the MB. Does it "click" when you insert it? Maybe it doesn't connect well with the MB. Or maybe is an incompatibility between the on board ram and the module...
is it possible to upgrade the i3 cpu to a i7 cpu on this computer. I have a x550 and I would like to upgrade without buying a new one. Good point on getting rid of the cd drive for a hdd. Don't remember the last time I used the cd drive.
Not necessarily...but the new ram should be at least as the default ram at specs. If one ram is weaker than the other the overal performance will be at the speed of the weaker one. Hope you understand my explanation, my english is a bit rusty.
I don't think it's necesary to clone the hdd before moving it to the hdd caddy. You can boot from the hdd when it is in the caddy and then perform the cloning. If you don't now how or don't want to change bios settings then you should clone it before moving the hdd. My advice for you: leave the cloning of the hdd and do a clean installation on the ssd. It will perform better this way.
+wuuber The dvd-rw connection is SATA II, and has 3gb/s. The HDD connection is SATA III with 6gb/s. So, if you want to get the max speed out of the ssd you have to put it instead of the hdd (sata III).
Thank you so much for this video. I followed your video and i could easily install an SSD and modify my DVD Caddy to hold my old HDD. Now the OS boots up very fast and all my applications open up quickly, which is exactly what i wanted :)
Ashwin Joshi yea umm... Where (for this computer) put the top power board... The power key I think... It fell out
Ashwin Joshi are you using 9.5mm hdd caddy or 12.7mm? I want buy hdd caddy but i dont know which one i should buy, i have x550vx laptop
it's 9.5mm, check it out here: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/2rrzRbE
Thanks mate
@@karso007 hi mate, i'm looking for one of this for my Pc as well, but my answer is, the one you linked above from aliex... doesn't have the place in the back to screw the caddy to the board... as you can see him doing on the video. how does it stays attached to the pc? because if its lose it can fall very easy...
Thanks for this video!! I have an X450LN, which apparently has a few extra screws to remove, which kinda confused me. But all in all it was the same, this video gave me courage to even try to do it lol!
So he basically sacrificed his cd/DVD reader for an HDD, what a legend
cd/dvd isn't relevant anymore in this wireless era
Also.... The melody of the song in the video is seriously catchy.
Thanks! It's something I made in Flstudio.

Thank you for the video it helped me understanding the process :)
Keep up.

Thank you for the guide bro, very helpful!
Worked perfectly for me, thanks for the guide.
This has got to be by far the easiest laptops to upgrade !
What is dvd driver size, i need to know heigh of driver (9 or 12 mm), so i can buy hdd box for second hdd.
9 mm
+Илья Бессмертный It seems that i can't reply to your comment...again the "linked comment" thing. I didn't upgrade the ram on this laptop. Some user sad that 8gb is the max ram supported (4gb on board + 4 gb on the free slot) and some sad that 12gb are ok (8gb on the free slot + 4gb on board). I would have tested this but for now i don't have the money for this operation :)). If you make the upgrade you should stick with the on board ram frequency. The optical drive is 9.5 mm (check this video to see how you can measure it: 2nd hdd caddy size).
Илья Бессмертный Waiting for your reply. I'm curios if it will work. Good luck!
Илья Бессмертный is it ok for additional 8GB RAM?
Thanks for your reply! Glad it worked!
anonyme secrete Yeah, I'm actually thinking to do the same thing with a similar model, but I've read conflicting things: some info says that it's max 8gb, but I've also read that it's 4gb soldered + 4gb - so in theory I can upgrade that second 4gb to 8gb, no? Good video though.
danythe007 i have a question i own a x550l and im wondering if im able to put a graphics card in it because right now im using the integrated graphics
I am having the same problem. Did you find the answer ? thx bro
Mauricio Krause no, I tried everything and gave up. good luck lol
u ve to change ur old SSD
i had same problem emailed to Asus support TR.
They said some old ssd not work and uptade ur bios to BIOS 303
my kingston ssd (6 years old) is not work for instaling OS.
i bought evo 750 (256gb) working good on 8.1 and windows 10
Nice video, I will do the same as my DVD ROM died
Thanks a lot. I have a question. Did the HDD become slow after this upgrade?
I've successfully installed a HDD caddy and put in my old HDD with Windows 8.1. Everytime i reboot (only reboot!) my notebook the harddisk make weird noise (wirte-read-head?). Like fast power off/on the HDD. This dont happen when i shut down the notebook. Do you have a solution?
My HDD make the same noise when rebooting. I don't have any solution for that...
I just installed an SSD and replaced the DVDROM unit with the HDD and I hear the same sound you are describing. Could you tell me if something happened with your HDDs some time after the upgrade? Thank you!
How do I unscrew the top right screw on the motherboard, I can't unscrew it even if I will try my best it just doesn't move to both sides
So tyou're just telling me that a normal SSD will work like that? Just swap HDD with SSD?
And if you will get an SSD that is limited by the connection with the MB whats the point to do the upgrade?
danythe007 okok
Thank you so much, you are so kind!
mine Asus X550VX, for choosing the right caddy what should we do first before buying the second caddy for an upgrade.
Mine exactly the same inches as your, ehh 15' maybe?
So did you just do a clean install of windows on your ssd and keep your hard drive as is?
I have a problem i Can installé windows Fine but I can't boot from my ssd and the bios doesn't detect it
too many questions :O - Would a 16gb ram work in the free slot , or 8gb because ive heard that it cant process 8gb ram or higher ?
Benoit Lemieux Yes, you need to take apart only the lid covering the HDD (2 screws) and replace the HDD with the SSD.
danythe007 Awesome thanks! I think your video inspired me to replace the optical drive for an HDD though ! Thanks for the great video!
Benoit Lemieux Good luck with the replacement/upgrade.
Kalau asus tipe x550ik Mau cabut dvd roomnya mau di ganti sama room hdd , candy nya tipe apa gan? 9.5 ato 12,7?
+danythe007 I have a bootable usb. If i only put the SSD in , it doesn't recognize it at all. The partition list is empty..
Borza Paul Try loading the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) driver at the partitions window. For some people, this seems to work. You could try to make the bootable usb with another program WinSetupFromUSB, Rufus or any other program for this task.
Where is the wi-fi card on all of that? Looking to update my x550vx model.
Jarek Harmening At 01:22 you will see the wifi card near the fan.
Awesome, thanks. The video was going too fast for me to tell at this time of night.
Hello.
Can you please tell me what is format-size of the hard disk inside lap top - original place. i just want to replace existing hard disk - HDD for SSHD. Is it 3.5" or 2.5"? My lap top is Asus x550C.
Thank you very much.
The HDD is 2.5".
Thank you very much. Is there anything that I must prepare before and after changing of hard disk? As I understand all I need to do is just replace hard disk and install win.
Just replace and install windows.
Thank you Danythe, you are boss.
You're welcome!
Hi there, thanks! Where do you buy the HDD cady to place it in place of the DVDRW? Thanks!
Ebay...search for "2nd hdd caddy"
Thanks! Found it on AliExpress for a third of the price and free shipping ;)
I have the same laptop X550 it's possible to change the graphic card?
I bought 8GB Ram and 480gb Kingston SSD and worked well.
I didn't open the laptop from inside as you did because I need the DVD.
other then that great work mate and thanks for the caddy adapter for future change! :D
From what I know the graphic card as the stock ram are welded on the MB. No upgrade option for this part...
Thanks mate. respect from England
Where we can buy the case that will contain the HDD ,instead the blue ray reader?do you have any links on Amazon
X550CA: Can I add an SSD and keep the original optical drive and existing HDD intact?
I think that your laptop model is the same as mine (motherboard layout), so it has only one sata connection for hdd and one for the dvd. You have to give up to one of them to add the ssd.
did you encounter any warranty stickers?
Hi! great video but I have a question, Is it ok if I just put a SSD of 120 Gb just for the system and the HDD of 1 Tb for the files, etc?? or does the SSD need being higher? then which is the minimum required capaacity of the SSD for the system? because I have little mount of money.
If you will install only windows, drivers and a few programs, i think you could manage with a SSD of 60gb, but in my opinion the 120gb is better.
danythe007 Thank you!
Yo Danythe007 i have a question too, could I just put an SSD instead of a HDD and use an external HDD and be fine? or do i need to have a HDD in my laptop?
Under HDD is an white wire, is from the usb port near dvd-writer?
only two bottom screws need to be removed? or is there more?
+danythe007 yes it hai the optical drive, thing is I dont know if can be replaced
Federico Vendramin I didn't find until now an optical drive that can't be removed. It should have a screw on the back cover or inside the laptop like in my video.
Is it possible to install a backlit keyboard? I have a x550 with the same chipset Intel HM 170 and I don't see the backlit connector on the mobo. Tnx
jana nikolic leaving a comment here. i intend to do so too.
Valentin Arh In my case the boot order was ok after the upgrade.
Hi Dany! I have a question. Does your laptop get warm sometimes? I dont know if putting HDD in the optical drive slot will cause that the temperature increase in that zone.
Hi Victor! With heavy usage i barely feel any changes in temperature at the hdd zone...you should't worry about this matter.
danythe007 Thanks Dany!! I will buy this laptop and do the changes, Thanks a lot !!

Ok my friend ... Thank you very much for the information ... I'm from Brazil !! Strong hug!!
Can I add SSD and let my hdd on ? , this way you did you placed the hdd into place of dvd , can i add ssd and don't remove dvd slot ?
This model has only one sata connection for the hdd and one for the dvd. You have to give up to one of them to add the ssd.

Hello.
Yea, i was wondering mainly because x550 doesn't have many usb slots but that's fine I will get a Bluetooth adapter
I have x550l and cant find caddy, just the orher models or x550. Does it matter or all x550 runs with the same model?
Flamster The caddy is universal and it will work with your model. You just need to pay attention to the size of it (9.5mm or 12.7mm) and the type of connection to the MB (sata or older ata/pata). In your case, you need a caddy with sata to sata connection and 9.5mm height (the same as the one in my video).
Check this examples from ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-Universal-SATA-2nd-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-for-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-SN-/161691941125?hash=item25a5973905

Costantino Spano I didn't have this kind of problem...
danythe007 i solved. I found out that there is a switch in the caddy near sata: left for HP/ Sony, middle for DELL/IBM and right for all other brand computer.

Thank you very much for your fast reply! I will go look for a ssd then :p thank you again!
Have a nice day!
Alex
alex cretzwoo Good luck with the upgrade. Have a nice day.
Hi, Where can I buy that HDD mount that you used in the place of the Disk drive?
ebay or aliexpress...search for "2nd hdd caddy 9.5mm".
danythe007 okay cool thanks brother. I found some online that are local as well
I think using 2 1TB solid state drives is an alternative suggestion.
Hi,
I've got a K450 (the "same" model as yours, but the 14" variant) and it does not have cover to remove the HDD to be replaced with and SSD, so I might need to fully disassemble the unit.
My question is, did you find any warranty seals or any other possible way for ASUS to know if your computer has been disassembled?
Thanks
Hi,
I didn't find any seals. Check the manual for your model. If they offer instructions on how to replace or upgrade the hdd, its safe to do the upgrade and should't void your warranty. But for safety use some rubber on the tip of the screwdriver...doing this will not leave any marks on the screws:).
I have an Asus x550cc model, ssd and hdd caddy(size) would you recommend?
hello, i have a Asus x550vx laptop. its size is very similar to that model. i7 6700hq geforce 950m and 1 tb hdd. im curious about that can i apply the same to my laptop. Is this true all i need 9.5 mm hdd caddy and ssd? Thanks a lot for video.
Check if your laptop has the 9.5mm or the 12.7mm optical drive (ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html). For this upgrade you need the caddy (with the right size) and the ssd.
canI use my old hdd ( I took it off when I put ssd ) to in my dvd room as a hdd
how did you install the windows with all the drives? cause i did the same to my pc (we have the same pc model) and all the drives were uninstalled. thanks for the video.
What do you mean that all the drives were uninstalled? When you try to install windows it doesn't detect the SSD and the HDD?
danythe007 it does, it's in the software part that the thing doesn't work so good, like the Touchpad, card reader, usb port and i don't understand why. thanks for the reply.
ricardorslp7 It seems that the drivers don't work... What version of windows have you installed? win 7, 8, 32 bit or 64? Did you install all the drivers? For my laptop, i made a iso image of the original driver dvd. After installing windows, all the drivers were installed from that iso image. You could try to reinstall all the drivers from the original driver dvd...or you could download them from asus website.
danythe007 i have win 8.1, thanks for the advice.
ricardorslp7 you're welcome
Hi, I put my HDD into caddy. But seems like my HDD is slightly thicker than caddy itself. Is this normal?
I am confused as to where i should install the ram, since i cant find the free slots on my laptop - x550 - is it possible to make a video on ram upgrade ? Thanks :)
Thank you for this video. I can put any type of SSD and it wil run in my PC? or I have to check comptability PC and SSD?
You can put any 2.5inch SSD with SATA III conection.
Hey, does opening that very first panel (RAM upgrade planned) void the warranty? I have 4gb installed now and it just doesn't cut it :P Thanks
Thanks, I'll probably just do this :P
Is your laptop type similar to the Asus x450LD?
Please can you check and tell me with your experience whether below items will match each other for the upgrade?

Kaito Daiki The battery died after 1 year so it doesn't matter if I will forgot to take it out next time :))
okay xD
But do you remember why it died?
I had to replace the battery twice within 4 years of using. The first time might because my laptop fell to the ground. The 2nd one, no idea.
Kaito Daiki I don't know why but one of the four litium cells inside the battery died. The voltage of that cell droped below 2 volts. I tried to replace that cell but the protection circuit has some kind of memory and will not allow to use again the battery.
Bro i have asus x550vq. Do you have any idea what is the size of caddy should i buy? Thank you in advance
I think its the same as mine: 9.5mm. But to be sure you could measure the optical drive inside your laptop. Check my video on how to do it (read the description of the video): ruclips.net/video/063KzQCQ1xA/видео.html
@@danythe007 thanks a lot buddy!
Hi, where can i buy the adapter for the HDD drive, all that i found in amazon and ebay are not compatible
Search on ebay for "9.5mm 2nd hdd caddy". Here is one example: www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-Universal-SATA-2nd-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-Caddy-for-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-UF-/161856595474?hash=item25af67a612:g:DlQAAOSwT5tWHL5G
Hi, I am about to do the same thing you did, and am a little worried about if the caddy I will buy will be the right length... what I am asking is, is this like a universal standard for not only width but for length of the caddy? I have the same exact laptop as the one in your video btw and dont want to have a hole in my laptop.
what do you think about these? www.amazon.com/Protronix-Optical-Drive-Caddy-Universal/dp/B004XIUQYA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1469979570&sr=8-4&keywords=9.5mm+2nd+hdd+caddy

tim shackleford The length is universal, don't worry about that. Both caddys from your links seem to be ok.
danythe007 alright, thanks man!
Where did you get the CD to SSD converter? Can I get a model number
I bought mine online. It doesn't have any model number. You can find on ebay...search for hdd caddy 9.5mm sata (ex: www.ebay.com/itm/SATA-2nd-HDD-HD-Hard-Driver-Caddy-for-9-5mm-Universal-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-/280824740531?pt=US_Drive_Bay_Caddies&hash=item4162757ab3)
danythe007
Okay, thanks
What is that first space, after you open the lid?
it may be a stupid question, but why didnt you put the ssd directly in the dvd slot?
kinobla94 Your primary HDD is a SATA 3 device, so the slot/interface on the motherboard is a SATA 3, and this can get data transfer speed up to 600 Mb/s.
Hello. Will this method work on my Asus X550J ? Got the HDD caddy too already from eBay. What else do I need? Please advice. Thanks!
Alright thank u :-)
+danythe007
Is this product sold in amazon USA?
Can you guide me on which one to buy?
I have the asus X550C i7
Hello i have X450cc Asus i want to do this, how could i know the size of the dvd without opening it
Hello Alexander. You could measure it directly. Check this video i made today: 2nd hdd caddy size Hope this will help you!
thanks
i do everethig as i seen in this video, but the HDD in optical bay doesn"t show in bios. It doest show in windows too. :( Can some1 help?
@@danythe007 thanks!!!!

Hey, Can you provide a video on how to put the keyboard back to its place? I am too afraid to broke my laptop when upgrading it.
Did you remove the keyboard from the upper part of the laptop? Or the upper part as a whole (the keyboard with the plastic part around it)?
So... Did any one get the number of that VISA?
Honestly, good video. I'm thinking about getting this laptop.
Where did you get that HDD bay? Thanks for the video.
Search for "2nd hdd caddy 9.5mm" on ebay, aliexpress or amazon.
I don't think that video card upgrade is possible... usually the graphic chip is welded on the motherboard...
Too bad, but geforce 840M will probablly work for now anyways. Thanks.
I just read this, I thought I didn't get a reply since there was no notifs XD came back to this vid since I was planning to upgrade my storage along with the RAM so it'd be on one go
Question though:
============================
After tons of research, I finally found the proper variant model of my laptop. It's a X550DP-XX048H and I find it weird since there are 10 screws below my laptop and 1 on the center + 2 on the batteries which is not the same X550DP in your video.
4 on corners
2 (1 on each side, left and right)
1 between the lower corners (bottom center, just right below the touch pad)
2 on the battery
1 on the center (weird)
and the battery is not removable directly since it's screwed so until now, I haven't made any upgrades since I'm afraid to open it, the center screw bothers me a lot because it seems like the center screw is connected to the motherboard.
Thank You,
Vinhzo
***** Yes, it will work.
danythe007 Thanks Bro, You got a Sub and a Like!!!
hi:)
Please tell me what size the size of the adapter need to buy? 12.7 mm? I have the same laptop model that you have. Sorry for my English I am from Russia
9.5 mm
danythe007 Thanks:)
Quick question. Will this upgrade work for x550jk if I also put 8gb ram chip in the free slot? I'm worried about the power. Will it be enough?
I think it will work fine with the upgrade.
So 1x250gb ssd, 1x1tb HDD and a total of 12gb RAM will not cause it problems? Cus right now I am wondering should I just buy a 1TB SSD and 8 GB RAM and completly replace my currant HDD.
12 gb ram wont work ....x550jk support max 8 gb of ram !
It will. My model - asus x550jk xo012d has 4gb soldiered and a slot that support another 8gb for a max of 12gb RAM. I've actually called ASUS to confirm this and they did confirm it.
If i only replace the hhd will it void my warranty? I will not open the whole laptop so i wonder.
I don't know. Some people said that it will void your warranty, some people said that doesn't. You could talk with the official asus service in your area and ask them.
Ok, thank you.
temperature review? i'm planning to buy the x550ln latest one with i7-4500u,gt840m 2gb vram
After about 4-6 hours of playing games (NFS The Run/ BF3/Darksiders etc) the CPU max temp was at about 76 degrees celsius (the GPU temp was roughly the same as the CPU). The cooling system does its job well and pretty silent too. I will make a video with temperature review in the future...now i don't have time to do it, i'm busy with my other projects :).
thank you :D , kinda complicated when dissasembling
Hey thanks for the video it's very helpful! my question to you Danythe007 is by installing both the SSD+HDD was there any negative affects towards battery performance, or can this overwork the battery possibly make it overheat?
+J.A. montelongo I didn't see any negative impact on the battery (and overheating in this case doesn't exists). The SSD in general should consume less power than the HDD. Plus, the HDD gets in sleep mode when is not in use, so the power consumption at that point is even low than the original setup. Search for power consumption on SSD and HDD if you need mode details.
Thank you I appreciate the quick response. These videos are very informative there should be more tech tubers like you.
You're welcome!
@@danythe007 hi boss. For asus a550L 1)dvd caddy to hold hdd which is the correct size 9mm or 9.5mm or 12.7mm
2)for RAM upgrade which type should i go.
DDR3 or DDR3L, 1.5V or 1.35V?
Thanks boss
Can you help me? I tried to install my late k53sv's 4gb ram module into this one and it just won't work, not even shown in BIOS. (It works in other laptops) Is it due to the speed difference? (1333mhz vs 1600mhz). It would be a shame though, since ol'k53sv took even older 800 mhz ram like a trooper.
+AceOfClubsHUN
1: Reset BIOS without the module and/or with the module inside the laptop.
Could you please share the link or ebay item id where you ordered your caddy? Thank you!
I didn't buy my adapter on ebay, but here are some id's with 9.5mm adapters: 261511499919, 360965001787, 111486057723, 281349419385.
is it possible to upgrade the i3 cpu to a i7 cpu on this computer. I have a x550 and I would like to upgrade without buying a new one. Good point on getting rid of the cd drive for a hdd. Don't remember the last time I used the cd drive.
You can't upgrade the cpu or the gpu. Both of them are soldered on the motherboard...
So if you do this upgrade you will lose your optical drive and you will have instead of it a HDD?
Yes, this upgrade will replace the optical drive with the hdd.
Thx
noob question, I got the same laptop series and I'm wondering if they come with an extra ram slot?
At 00:18 you will see the empty ram slot.
I see, thank you..
I thought you removed it before you recorded my bad xD
btw, when I upgrade my ram from 8 gb to 16, does my new ram have to be the same as the default onboard?
No, that slot was empty... the factory ram is welded on the MB.
Not necessarily...but the new ram should be at least as the default ram at specs. If one ram is weaker than the other the overal performance will be at the speed of the weaker one. Hope you understand my explanation, my english is a bit rusty.
Dude, do I have to clone first the hdd (OS etc) to the ssd before transferring the hdd to the caddy in order to boot from the ssd? thanks!
It will perform better this way.
danythe007 do a clean install. Got it! Thanks bro. This helped a lot!
Hi, can I ask why did you put the ssd in the place of the hdd and not just into the caddy ?
+wuuber The dvd-rw connection is SATA II, and has 3gb/s. The HDD connection is SATA III with 6gb/s. So, if you want to get the max speed out of the ssd you have to put it instead of the hdd (sata III).
Are you sure that it's sata 3 ? i have x552m and it reports as sata 2 only
hi, is the port on the right a PCI express slot? if not does it have one?
Hi... Have you installed the AHCI driver for the SSD?
