Welcome to The Sunlit Man book club! Join William DeMerrit, Octavia Escamilla, Charlie Holmberg, Wren Weichman, and Guest Host Daniel Greene as they discuss everything from power to self-identity as explored by the final entry in the Year of Sanderson. Gain insights into the process of recording audiobooks from William, the presence (and lack thereof) of relationships according to the Religion of Charlie, and witness the (glorious) birth of the term “Fantify.” And be sure to join us for the next and final episode of this book club, where our intrepid cast will embark on a deep-lore, easter-egg discussion of The Sunlit Man and it's (significant) impact on the wider Cosmere.
Thank you for joining us for The Sunlit Man bookclub-for more book club fun, check out our book clubs for Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. - Развлечения
35:31 William realizing he's not going to get to record a sequel 🥺
I hope they find another chance for him in the Cosmere. He was an awesome narrator!
He was 100% a great narator and I hope they bring him back for future projects. Michael and Kate are great, but we've got 20-30 years of stories ahead of us and they deserve a great retirement.
Amen. Dragonsteel, William has my support for future audiobooks.
Yup, I was sad to see his response. Doesn’t seem he knew that there isn’t another planned standalone of the character.
Fantastic narrator and this video shows he has true passion for his works. Would definitely like to hear him again in the Cosmere!
I thought his voice was great and his accent choice for Aux was great too. But simultaneously, I hated his voice choices for Hoid and the Cinder King haha. Overall I think he was great and wouldn't mind hearing more of him in the future.@@hashgar4762
Also, big shoutout to William DeMerrit. Was fantastic as narrator for this book
For Octavia at 6:10 giving the answer but being completely ignored only for Wren to get the credit 10s later - we heard, and we know that you're *actually* the smart one
I don't think Wren said it in any way trying to "get the credit." The tone of his voice to me implied "oh, that's the Greater Good, what Octavia just said."
@@jonathanbost8427 oh yeah Wren is a solid lad, can't see him doing that on purpose - I think Octavia just said it too quietly :)
William discussing the accent concern of one of the characters was honestly AMAZING. Probably my favorite part of this.
Hearing that has put the Sunlit Man audiobook on my wishlist. I thought I'd be happy with just the physical books.
I knew after the start that I was going to want to listen to his narration but after hearing his aux voice it became A NEED!
I keep waiting on Wren to introduce himself as “the newly appointed Visual Effects Director on the upcoming Cosmere film adaptations.”
Oh boy, someone make that happen
William discussing how he came up with the voice for Aux was awesome. I loved the reading of Aux's voice!
So happy to see Wren in the Cosmere bookclub he was wishing for. Also props to William for his awesome insight on voicing the Audiobook and his creative way on creating Aux's voice
You know, I've adored these Book Clubs. Any chance of seeing them each time a new book comes out? It'd be a shame not to have more of these.
This book club was great, and I think this format worked much better. The first parts of the previous books clubs felt very limited in what they could talk about, where as this episode felt like a barrage of interesting topics that they could more openly discuss.
I also loved everyone on the desk, and Daniel did a good job as host. Big thumbs up and can't wait for the next part!
Yes! The dynamic here felt so fluid and natural, I found myself laughing a lot. The previous book clubs felt a bit rigid and awkward at times. I liked it the most when people were allowed to talk about whatever they wanted without having a moderator “policing” them.
So often, female characters are used as props or plot points for the male protagonists. The character's loved one dying at the beginning of a story is common example (it's almost always the wife/girlfriend who dies and starts the male protagonist on a journey). So I love that Brandon flips a lot of those tropes in this book.
Loved Williams contributions. He's adding valuable stuff to the cosmere here. I think it's bigger than just the imagination of one guy now.
Great discussion! And I loved that William was there to give his insights as a narrator who has also never read a Cosmere book before. I’d love to listen to more narrations by him, especially if he’s taking a stand against colonialism along the way haha
I've read the book, but now I NEED to listen to the audiobook! I love the sound of Aux's voice and accent!!!!!
Charlie, thank you for your comment about the Greater Good and seeing aging women in powerful roles. As a woman who loves fantasy fiction and heading into her 50th year, I appreciate being seen. Thank you!
I'd dare say that depth is the mark of good literature, and this book has that depth.
It's interesting to see that everyone here got out of the book what they want, be it political, relationships (despite the lack of kissing:), or engineering/mechanical depth. Personally I noticed some pretty compelling religious themes/scenes. But I also think that if the book were simply trying to be one or even all of those things first, it wouldn't have been as good. Sanderson again succeeded in writing a good story, and because that was the main focus, the depth came along with it for people to see or interpret what they are looking for in the book.
But I'm just happy and grateful that Sanderson has continued to put story first before everything else, and continues to write amazing stories and books!
The put story first part of sanderson is what i really like about him. Compared to old literature, or even some newer books, his stories just feel so much better imo because THAT is his focus, not some fancy wordplay or other stuff to make the book feel fancy. Also makes it way more readable.
Story was amazing, the design of the book was amazing, the narration was amazing (saying that as a Kramer/Reading fan), art was amazing too. The perfect book!
William's Auxiliary voice is out fo this world! Just as a side note :)
I loved William's analysis on the more intricate underpinnings of Sunlit Man. So often people will only approach the surface level details of a story and ignore "political" ideas in novels. Great conversation!
I know this has all already been recorded, but for Wren, Brandon has confirmed that in the Cosmere Investiture fits into E=mc^2. All 3 can be converted into the other.
Daniel is a great host :D
Oh hey it's wren from corridor crew. All those cosmere tshirts paid off at the end lol.
I didn't get the audiobook so this was my first time hearing William's voice, and damn, it makes me wish I had the audiobook.
Really fun seeing Wren here! I actually started reading the cosmere because of an audible sponsored bit Wren did on Corridor Crew.
Now I am an editor for the coppermind. Lovely episode everyone! Excited for the book club.
Definitely my favorite of the four books this year. I listened to it in audiobook so it's great to see William here. His Aux voice was critical to the emotional core of the audio version.
William taught me so much during the book club about audiobook narrating. Had no idea how much work went into breaking down different accents and how to make this work. Honestly I might listen to this audiobook instead of reading for my reread
We need Wren in all the book club videos
He is certainly trying. This is his second appearance on a secret project bookclub
I’m laughing they brought Wren back for a second book club because the other one was a non-Cosmere book, so I think it fitting that he also be in this one which is the most Cosmere connected of all the Secret Project novels.
A couple years from now, The Sunlit Man will be seen as the best book of the secret projects. Mark my words.
I listened to my first ever cosmere book while delivering pizza in like 2019 after Wren mentioned it in a corridor digital ad read, his inclusion at the table is excellent and very full circle for me
Here are my questions for Brandon:
1. How do the animals on Canticle survive? We know they exist because Rebeke is a hunter and Nomad sees animals on land, but we never learn how they survive.
2. If Nomad studies the designs for a machine gun, could he make a shard machine gun? Would he be limited with how far his bullets could go?
I loved this group for the book club, they were all just vibing so well with each other and having a great time! Can't wait to see the next video! ❤
I'm a bit late to the party here, but I wanna say that William did an incredible job as the audiobook narrator! I hope he comes back for more projects!
Brandon we love these book clubs they help us feel connected to the fandom. Please keep sponsoring these
I had to do a quadruple take seeing Wren here. Daniel and Wren are two RUclipsrs I watch that never felt like they could exist in the same time and space
I finished the audiobook last weekend. The narration voice gave me the impression of a Dresden files audiobook.
Fantastic discussion! I'm looking forward to (the hyper-teased) part 2!
19:30 That was my interpretation. Rebeke comes out and declares herself the Sunlit Woman. While the people thought it was going to be Nomad, it really wasn't. Rebeke was the destined Sunlit.
Reminiscent of the Hero of Ages..
Awesome. I just read sunlit man last week. I love this discussion
Yay! Wren’s back!
Having William DeMeritt there was such a great choice. He's so insightful about the characters he voiced and about the work he read.
I really hope there will be Brandon’s book club videos on the Stormlight Archive books eventually!
Kudos for allowing them to curse and speak their mind!
William DeMerrit is brilliant! Thanks for including him in this super cool discussion.
The thing I liked most about secret project 4 is that it had Sanderson’s most concise thematic writing to date. A fun story is just a fun story to me until it is “elevated” by what it encourages you to think about.
I've been waiting for this! This was definitely my favorite of the secret projects. It's up there with Stormlight for me in terms of enjoyment.
I want someone to ask Brandon if the name Zellion is an oath
COSMERE SPOILERS BELOW
, if he is creating a nahel bond with a shade, taking the shade into himself, therefore gaining the power to accept power from the “shadesworn” Threnodites. The way the power starts flowing into him after the words “I accept”, it’s so similar to the words of the Stormfather when accepting an oath.
I loved how the picture depicting sigzil in his plate after auxiliary died was titled "worth saving" the same name as thr chapter title where teft died in stormlight 4.
I just finished Warbreaker. And it seems to be the m.o. for Sanderson to make tools have personality.
It’s not an m.o. it’s just a common world building thing that connects all the books. The tools with personalities are the same kind of entity…..
So happy Wren is there!
What an awesome lineup of people for this book club! Stoked to watch these!
I loved William's narration. The only quibble I had was how his Hoid didn't match up with Kramer's and Reading's but that was a small thing and the rest of the voices were brilliant.
Solemnity Divine was the Engineer, the other was Adonalsium-will-recall-our-plight-eventually
I enjoyed this more than the other book club episodes. Daniel Greene did a great job as a host too and everyone else was very energetic.
I love Wren's boundless enthusiasm
Nobody, not even Branderson Sanderson himself, can convince me that the "Cinder King" isn't a reference to Critical Role Campaign 1
exandria is cosmere confirmed?
@@spunlines4557I can't find anything on this. Is this for real?
He’s a fire-themed tyrannical villain with a gem set in his chest.
Probably just a coincidence.
I feel like it's a dark souls inspiration, in ds3 you slam embers to become "invested". His first book elantris was also pretty similar to dark souls 1 with the undead burg or an asylum for the undead being elantris.
I just thought that was the name of the person who was the president of the Cinderella fan club.
The lack of shipping in Brando Sando books is just his style! Everyone will do the shipping except BrandoSando ... how many ppl got upset with Dalinar-Navani ship kept getting in the way of the story until possibly the TowerLight thingy ? 😆😆😆 "Get a Room you Two!" we need to find that 9-shadow villain! 😆😆😆 Anyways I think Brando Sando tells really captivating stories that reaches all kinds of audiences. Never stop telling your stories the way that you want to do Brando Sando ! 😀
The difference between this book club group and all the others is vast. Going forward, every book club should involve Daniel Greene, and Charlie Holmberg. This group was enthusiastic, insightful, and fun to watch. The other book club vids were just so quiet and subdued (and, I’m sorry, but boring), and this one was much more enjoyable!
Adonalsium-Will-Remember-Our-Plight-Eventually would have to be my favorite side character, if for no other reason than the sheer audacity of making that a character's name.
I found the most audacious character name to be Jeffrey Jeffrey.
Thank you for Book Club. It is like discussing books I love with friends. Love the book and the group, but not the bad language.
That Aux voice was 🔥
DANIEL GREEEEENEEE LETS GOOOO
I'm a little confused about brandons answer to the becoming shades question, because it sounded like he was explicitly talking about when people get turned into sunhearts, while the question was framed more geberally.
Hey Brandon 👋. You should make all the Chinese covers into posters. Please 🙏.
Also on that note some displates would be amazing for any cosmere art. The Chinese covers though would be amazing as a lumino displate.
It makes sense in retrospect, but I did not expect Wren to be here. (This is the first book club I've watched)
This audiobook was amazing, thank you again reading it for us!!
The Fiiiinal Book club!
The poor narrator reading The Sunlit Man as the first Cosmere novel.
Spoilers:
I thought it was so funny how the Cinder King was such a big threat for the story, yet such a massive idiot when it came to the Cosmere at large. Dude was in for a rude awakening if he actually got what he wanted, and I love that.
Spoilers for stormlight 5:
It's the same thing as Gavilar, who thought he had it all figured out, right until he got shishkebabed.
I can’t wait to listen to the audio books and come back to this series for each of the books!
Graphic Audio does a really cool version of the Audiobooks that is sort of like a play with sound effects and each character has their own voice actor. Little more expensive than the audible versions but worth it imho.
Can’t wait to pick up a copy of this.
Daniel is such a great host ❤
REN! The crossover I didn't know I needed 😂
The narrator is probably my favorite single person book performance I’ve herd
Love this group!
Octaviaaaa!!!
I'm so nervous I'm going to throw up hahah
@@OctaviaEscamillaSpiker hahaha!! 💖💖 okay but your theme song is “Lucky” by Britney Spears right now
Whoa I want to hear his audio, the accent choice surprised me but it seems like an amazing choice.
So hiped, to see Wren on this video!
27:08 Intentionally Blank reference 😅
i still have a lot of cosmere books that i have not read, but still decided to pick up sunlit man, and was kinda scared that i missed Zellion's backstory for having not read dawnshard. I'm so glad that wasn't the case.
More narrated content from William DeMerrit, that guy was awesome as Nomad!
GREATER GOOOOOOOD
Appreciate that Wren often weare a cosmere shirt on corridor video and wear a corrdior shirt on cosmere video !
I dont normally listen to audiobooks, but I will have to reread this one because I had no idea it had a different narrator!
Nothing against Michael and Kate, but someone new is cool to see
One structural thing I didn't see referenced is that this is the only(?) Sanderson book that isn't broken out into parts, which seemed to fit nicely with his vision for the nonstop action book
!!SPOILER!!
5:30 ..thanks a lot for that, Daniel B. Greene.
This was so fun to listen to, way to go!! 🎉
Eyyyyyyyy it mah boi with the good opinions, les gooooOO!
Never in a million years did I expect to hear an f-bomb on this channel. Don't hate it.
Basically every review I've seen mentioned that this should not be your first book if you are new to the Cosmere, and I could not disagree more. I think this is one of the best begginner entry points into the Cosmere we have gotten so far. It is so fast paced that you don't have time to be frustrated at the lack of explanation, you are on a wild ride together with Nomad. And the sense of wonder people often accuse Brandon's other books of lacking is so very present here.
Cinder King seemed to me like a parallel opposite on how Gavilar is described in early Stormlight. Crown was less ornate because he was a powerful man. Cinder King had to cheat to “prove” he is in control
That's my sister!
Sigzil as the lone wanderer set in mad max meets waterworld on the planet Crematoria from chronicles of riddick with cosmere magic and sci-fi era tech
Was so excited to see wren here! WHAT :3
Peak book, peak book club
>! SPOILER !< >! SPOILER !< >!SPOILER!<
I always wanted to know, Dead-Eyes made their decision to break their oaths during the Recreance, and Dead-Eyes seem to have a journey path to help at least partially restore themselves maybe all the way and become maybe new-type of spren-state once again ? Is that why Sunit Man ends with Aux becoming Dead_Eyes but Sigzil left before Adolin restored Maya ? Or Maya went on a journey path restored herself into a new-type spren-state ? 😀
i’m the one who hasn’t read the book but has watched the video lmao. have only read elantris, but i can’t wait to dive into the cosmere when i get my hands on the books.
I'm intrigued to see how things tie together later on.
Not a tiny bit of concern voiced for the poor animals of Canticle having to run *all the time*? Gosh! We must have a novela of Canticle Bambi becoming invested after finding his own mother’s cinder, gaining shard antlers.
Please bring William back for more narration and other things.
For me, I thought it was a mix between Mad Max and Mortal Engines (the movie, I've never read the books), especially with the individuals vehicles that come together into one larger one.
What story is farther in the future than Sunlit? (for the record I'm also in the casual category. I think the only ones I've read more than once are Way of Kings, Shadows for Silence, and Emperor's Soul)
If I had to guess Tress and Yumi could both be further future. In Sunlit Man space travel is only 100 years old. The Sorceress was around for a long while in Tress (though I think it’s unclear how long) and Yumi has references to further future politics. I don’t remember specifics but to me those are the best candidates. Sixth of the Dusk could also be later since that one has Scadrians being more sophisticated their approach to native populations.
Wasn’t expecting wren to be here
25:21 hang on, how did Wren respond to the post-recording RAFO?
