The design is being taken out of context. Hans is meant to contrast with his Master in the game he debuted in, Fate/Extra CCC. A game that was released several years before the mobile gacha game. His Master was a hypersexual, physically mature but mentally immature person who appeared benevolent but was actually quite malicious due to childhood trauma warping how she saw others, making her unable to understand other people. This contrasts with Hans, a physically immature but extremely mentally mature person, who acts like a morose sourpuss who constantly criticizes and berates others but is ultimately benevolent and understands people a little too well (which is why his criticisms always hit sore spots).
Interestingly, Fate Hans' design predates the franchise's gacha days by several years. He is Like That in-universe due to the person summoning him having some deep seeded trauma going back to her childhood, with his works being her only escape from the cult she grew up in. The entry he is from also has a running theme of how Sexuality does equal maturity, and how damaging it can be to engage with the former without the latter to handle it. With him contrasting his hyper-sexual, but immature, adult Master as a absolutely non-sexual child speaking as a mature adult (with the voice of Dio Brando to boot). As someone who has a decent familiarity with the Fate franchise i will say that there is more to Hans than someone might think with a superficial analisys of his design. He appears like a young boy because as an author he is heavily associated with stories for children by most people, but also because the imagination of child is the most powerful tool he has for writing, this is contrasted by his personality, which is that of a jaded old man with 0 social skills, no patience for other people and a distaste for sexual interactions. Also Edison is literally characterized as an evil capitalist, who is introduced as a villain exploiting the people under him for personal gains to an extreme degree while putting on an air of power, self righousness and showmanship to mask his true nature and that is why he looks like a literal lion man. There are a lot of things you can criticize the Fate francise for, but it's undeniable that they put a looot of work on the designs of the characters and even the more questionable choices they make have a lot of thought behind them.

"Slick." Uhhh. Look. He's definitely not slick, and he absolutely mocks his own social incompetence. He even mocks that one of his Skills (Abilities) is literally being able to tell what makes a person tick and only being able to use it to hit them where it hurts most. He also is very open about the fact that he refuses to let himself get close to anyone in a genuine way, and his only "relationship" is deeply toxic. That said, Fate also has a thing where the Servant (what Hans is) can have their form and sometimes personality influenced by the person who summons them. Hans was summoned by a woman who- if you read between the lines- is pretty much implied to have been severely sexually abused. Meaning that Hans being in the form of a child is probably somewhat to do with her desiring someone who *won't* be able to act on sexual attraction to her, even if they experience it, even if they wouldn't normally be inclined to act on it anyway. The character design is deliberately contradictory, in his case.
He's voiced by takehito koyasu making him in competition of the biggest chads in this franchise right behind Ozymandias and Mephistopheles, who are also voiced by takehito koyasu
As a history major, fate is one of my favourite things because it allows me to easily remember the broad strokes of a historical figure’s story and personality (where it matches up) easily.
The beautiful thing about Fate designs and character concepts in general is that despite looking like gacha animeification bs at first, most actually go way deeper and make much more sense.

To be fair, Andersen character is one of the most interesting on fate. Aside the epic scene when he roast Solomon/goethia perspective as something mediocre, my favorite scene is on hawaian summer event when he defended free expression and censorship when he read Kiara's lewd book on servant-con and buys 3 copies. Everybody who wanted to censor that book disappeared after that.
The Throne of Heroes punked him by giving him the MGM lion face due to his film industry contributions. The reason he is so buff and flashy, however, is because he was summoned specifically to take the lead to stop the destruction of America in Singularity 5. The results were very weird being injected with little bits of the concept of America's power and leaders, but effective enough to hold the line, until the protagonist took the lead. Edison would of looked different if he was summoned normally.
Andersen in Fate is one of the most based characters ive seen in anime That guy trashtalks literal gods and gets away with it because the one he talks about has enough respect for his massive balls not to kill him.
Not in FGO though, he trash talks a demon and it shoots him instantly. He survived because someone else took the shot, but the demon just took a shot at him again and this time it worked.
Yeah he has a potty and over confident mouth. Most of the time he says right things though. Also fate creators themselves like him so he gets away with plot armors here and there.
I would like to note that there is an in-universe explanation for why he looks like that: it's explained as being the embodiment of Andersen's desire to return to his childhood, because he believes that that was when he was at his happiest. Oh, also, despite taking the form of a child, he still has the voice of an adult man.

The explanation for his appearance is actually well detailed in fate and it’s quite tragic and messed up. All thank’s to a little skill called “Innocent Monster”. Fate lore is really fun IMO and even if I dont like every design, I really enjoy the explanation they have for it.
I mean the reason why Hans is a boy is because he considers it his prime and all servants are summoned during their prime (with the exception of Lu Shewain who has his lancer form and his assassin form). As a writer, I guess he considered his potential as a children’s book writer to be when he was a kid himself. He’s also everything you said he should be in the story such as being a terrible house guest which we see in the London arc and generally being pretty disagreeable. As for Edison, he became a lion because he felt it best embody his ideals (which is being extremely prideful) on top of being a reference to Liongate Studios. Even his Noble Phantasm references Fox. While I know this was a 1 minute review focusing on actual character designs and while I do agree it’s weird, I just feel like you would take in context for the fate side of stuff and read up on the backstory of the fate characters (even at least summaries of their personalities). The writers and character designers do their research and try to use their backstories and history when make them in the game. Yeah, some of them can be weird (Astolfo for example) but I don’t mind if they take some liberty with personality or design if it’s still based on their history.
In the Li shuwen case you can think of both of them as his prime, the young one being his fisical prime and the old one his prime as a martial artist, in some situations the young can fight bare handed and the old one wielding the lance. In edison case the lion head is a materialization of the concept invested on him, being the u.s presidents, a symbol of leadership and wisdom, not exactly being all of them like that, more like the whole concept of a "president".
Servants are not always summoned in their prime. Artoria, Medusa, and Cu can be summoned in their younger forms. And Gilgamesh can be summoned in multiple stages of his life. Remember that there are multiple summoning system each with their own rules and limitations. And that literally every rule is broken at some point or another. For example. The Fujuki System doesn't allows Japanese servants to be summoned ans only a Hassan can be sunmoned as the Assassin pf those wars. Yet Kojiro exist. And then we have Elizabeth and Carmila who are the same person at differnet stages of her life. Kind of. And the two Vlads which are another can of worms.
Oh I would LOVE for you to do Fate more. It has some uh..... Interesting designs, in a good and really really bad way. Andersen is one of my favourite designs and concepts ngl, because they actually very clearly paid attention to Andersens tragic life - the reason he got the victorian schoolboy trope was bcs in-universe he was like "my life fucking sucked i only had a good time as a kid" so combining that with his legacy as being remembered as "childrens fairy tale author" he ended up manifesting as a child in appearance... But bcs he's known for his lack of social graces he's still keeping his personality and is basically a really savage jerk while actively refusing to fight just like Shakespeare LMAO. fate converts historical figures in interesting ways where some things are taken rather literally but generally it focuses on "what is the figure known for?" And animeficating it. (At least in the good designs
To be fair, the Fate games representation of historic figures are like a twisted bizzaro world take. Even the initial visual novels were. Hercules was a literal ogre. Gilgamesh was every bishounen antagonist ever, and Arthur being wahmen
and to be fair also, theres the male arthur in fate but is mordred his a yandere though. Also its Fate Prototype but he also got summoned in fgo arcade and fgo
This is why I love Fate honestly... They pretty wild and loose with the original canon of the people/gods they put into the franchise, but more often than not it inspires me to look deeper into their backstories. I've learned more about history and mythologies as a result of being into Fate, than I ever did going to school haha xD

Fate does some real dumb things wth it’s characters (Atilla the Hun got done so dirty) but there’s actually a reason for Hans being a kid - Servants generally appear in the form they believe to be their “prime”, and Hans considers his childhood to be his prime… because it’s the time in his life he was happiest.
I also really dislike what they did with Demolay. Not that they turned him into a sexy woman, but because they already had an existing Demolay in the FGO Arcade version, completed with a personality and character that fit amazingly well with his historic counterpart. The idea they created that Jacques de Molay is a tenacious haggler and money-pincher is funny as hell considering his history, and it made the events leading up to his death even more tragic. Her "Possessed by eldritch entity" shtick comes waaaaay out of left field, with the devs turning her into a Foreigner class even moreso. Honestly, if I _really_ had to choose another class for Demolay that isn't Saber, Avenger would be second with Ruler being third, with Foreigner being waaaaay back right next to Caster.
I kinda like Foreigner De Molay. Servants are influenced by the stories about them which turns some of them into "innocent monster". The female version combines all defamations about the order: The satanic sex rituals, the worship of Baphomet which acts as a terminal for an outer being as Baphomet was is an invented entity, the NP which is the curse that was supposedly spoken during his death at the pyre.
Ironically, his voice and personality is exactly accurate. Give it a listen, non fate fans, and you will be shocked by his voice haha. He sounds extremely monotone, deep voice, and overall done with life.
Going out into the lawn and crying about a bad review is a whole mood. Also I was not prepared for bara lion Edison. Speaking of bara though… I’m not a Fate fan but… Napoleon and Iskandar 👀
It’s realllllllllll weird, let’s not lie. But my favorite character in fate franchise would be Voyager a combination of the Little Prince and the Voyager 1 spacecraft meant to represent humanity as the Voyager spacecraft heads out.
If you played the 'Summer Camp' event then you'll know that Heroic servants are summoned at their peak and if they showed their genius at a very young age then they'll be separated into different spirit origins like Kid Gilgamesh and Mature Archer Gilgamesh
He's got an older version that you can see in game. He's also apparently very horrifying with his body being littered in blood soaked scales, burns, and frostbite having essentially been cursed with monstrous injuries and bodyparts based on the protagonists of his books
I'm curious about your thoughts on 'Demons' in SMT and Persona games' 'Personas', designed mostly by Kazuma Kaneko, 'till he distanced himself off from video game work around 2010s. Rather influential artist, depicting mythologies and so on.
One reason Edison is a lion 🦁 is that he’s associated with the motion pictures in Hollywood so the Lion just best shows that and he’s Buff because the “spirit origins” of every past and future president merged into him.
I love how they portrayed Anderson in Fate, his personality is exactly how most people see him as while his body is a representation of how most people see his works, for children, being associated with children so much lead to this
I remember this quote somewhere "Become known and you'll be in history, be more known, and you get a statue, be really known, you get to have a battleship named after you just to be turned into an anime girl" the price of history folks
The thing is, his personality is entirely spot-on, and his design predates the Gacha age of Fate. In Fate, some Servants tend to be a mix of who they really were and what the mass population’s consensus of him is. Hans is incredibly famous for his Children’s Fables. His personality however is anything but. He’s grouchy, critical, morose, and actually genuinely one of my favorite characters. Fate generally tends to get their characterizations spot-on… albeit a few exceptions like Edison, but even THAT has an explanation.
This video would have been much more interesting if you bothered to actually look at the personality and compare them Because his personality is actually kinda fitting, not completely but kinda, enough that the comparison can be interesting. But no you looked at the picture, decided that it was weird and said it was an insult, which is honestly more shallow and superficial than pertinent. fate servants are idealised, magically modified version of their characters, they represent more the idea people had of the character than the actually historical figure. A video actually bothering to check the wiki of those characters and see the reasons behind the design and then fact check them would be very interesting, that's a shame it's not the case here.

There's actually an in universe reason for it. Innocent Monster & the wish of his master, Kiara. Innocent monster gave him match burns, fish scales etc as an amalgamation of his stories, & the adorable schoolboy design is by the thought that someone so creative with such a heart for fantasy must surely have a sense of whimsy, & his master wanted a servant with the Child Attribute because she has been seen as nothing but an object of sexual gratification her entire life & desperately wished for a servant that wouldn't see her that way as well, thus Hans
Keep in mind that fate also takes advantage of summoning historic heroes from parallel universes, every change to the famous history characters becomes possible through this fact.
Not gonna lie , this makes me moderately happy that my country’s literally and historical heroes are so unknown we will never get the anime boy treatment
Well ,that's a really good video ,to spread misinformation ,it really doesn't take that long to inform yourself about the Fate version of Hans ,but well ,good video presentation I guess.
To be fair it's really not that easy to research the tiny details that help characterize and represent the actual people, especially Hans in this case.
As much as I would love you to review character designs in the Fate series, please do be careful. If you think LoL players are overprotective about their mains, I’ll just say that FGO players far exceed that……
I would say it's also hard to do so without knowing a lot of lore. For example that Servants do not necessarily look the same like during their life times for various reasons.
Nah, fate fans don't go angry with something like this, they can understand why the people think this shit is fuck up at firtd glabce but they take the time to explain why this shit is actually not that fuck up
@@willconn3620 There's a reason Hans is summoned as a child due to the conceptional effects of his children stories. Heck, when that effect wears off during an odd event, he looks like his normal adult skeptical self. (Sure his hair is still blue, but its anime, what do you expect)
There's something greatly amusing about how those designs and concepts are not distorted and completely wronh with no thought but really just completely outlandish surreal stuff lol
There is a reason for the schoolboy look of Andersen. There is skill called "Innocent Monster", wherein rumors, accusations, and thoughts of people affect the Heroic Spirit in question. Andersen is specific, as it is called "Curse of the Readers", and the affects both his personality and body. His manifestation is a child's body (personifying the genre he wrote in, but mostly the wish of the girl that summoned him) with burns on his hands, frostbite, fish scales on his legs, his throat under intense pain, honestly every trait from his stories, and the thought of people thinking "oh, he might be like this" will affect Andersen. His personality, for the most part, is quite in line with his irl personality (albeit twisted by his Innocent Monster skill).
The most hilarious thing about Andersen's portrayal in Fate for me is that, despite his visual design, they actually got his personality right for the most part.

Most designs, yes. Not all of them.
Well there is a reason for the form change. Servants are spiritual copies of famous historical figures, literature characters, or mythical figures.

"Slick."
Uhhh.
Let's just stick to, "because most of his literature is for children."
>"He's definitely not slick"
>Also the best f2p caster support you can ask for
He's voiced by takehito koyasu making him in competition of the biggest chads in this franchise right behind Ozymandias and Mephistopheles, who are also voiced by takehito koyasu
Well... Andersen form predates the gacha game actually. And boy, does his words burn people down in that game.
Hans the only person to roast Gilgamesh For His kingship and Survive and Keep Roasting others
I wanna be an important part of history purely to be animated into fate
As a history major, fate is one of my favourite things because it allows me to easily remember the broad strokes of a historical figure’s story and personality (where it matches up) easily.
The beautiful thing about Fate designs and character concepts in general is that despite looking like gacha animeification bs at first, most actually go way deeper and make much more sense.
"say the line" meme but it's me waiting for you to bring up Presiking Edison
When hans is summoned he choose to manifest as a kid. Hans considers his childhood to be the peak of his life, His imagination and creativity was at it's peak and he wasn't bogged down with the issues of being an adult. And he still have an adult personality in his kid body
And about Edison is a lion because he supposedly make a first appearance in light novel called "fate/strange fake" but his appearance is canceled and until today his exact reason about his look is not explained yet
Yes! Fate is my favorite franchise, never thought I'd see you talk about it, even in a short.

Loved that little "oh..." in the end, no one expected the Bara Furry Lion Edison
Andersen in Fate is one of the most based characters ive seen in anime
That guy trashtalks literal gods and gets away with it because the one he talks about has enough respect for his massive balls not to kill him.
He didn't even mention the best part of this andersen
He's a fucking savage with no filter
For all the appearance dissonance, the personality is on point.

Kind of. And the two Vlads which are another can of worms.
come on now, you're expecting too much out of a self-proclaimed spouter of """hot takes""" literal-who influencer
To be fair, hercules was only an ogre cause he was summoned that way
and to be fair also, theres the male arthur in fate but is mordred his a yandere though. Also its Fate Prototype but he also got summoned in fgo arcade and fgo

Wonder how tbskyden explains any body in one piece
DW shouldve still made him a male even if he got possessed
but from what i have heard the creator of molay judt wants him to be arcade exclusive
"I love Miyamoto Musashi!"
"Same she's hot"
"...What?"
Ironically, his voice and personality is exactly accurate. Give it a listen, non fate fans, and you will be shocked by his voice haha. He sounds extremely monotone, deep voice, and overall done with life.

Did someone else already mentioned to him that Hans Anderson is voiced by Dio.
I'm curious about your thoughts on 'Demons' in SMT and Persona games' 'Personas', designed mostly by Kazuma Kaneko, 'till he distanced himself off from video game work around 2010s. Rather influential artist, depicting mythologies and so on.
Bruh, he isn't cheerful at all... He doesn't even originate from FGO 🤦
One reason Edison is a lion 🦁 is that he’s associated with the motion pictures in Hollywood so the Lion just best shows that and he’s Buff because the “spirit origins” of every past and future president merged into him.

"Become known and you'll be in history, be more known, and you get a statue, be really known, you get to have a battleship named after you just to be turned into an anime girl" the price of history folks
Omg I'm hyped on this series
It takes them at least half a year design each character. They don't design them randomly, there is always a reason for their design.
When it comes to fate and how it handles it's historical characters, my best advice it to not take it seriously.
Wait till you see Charles Babbage
The thing is, his personality is entirely spot-on, and his design predates the Gacha age of Fate. In Fate, some Servants tend to be a mix of who they really were and what the mass population’s consensus of him is. Hans is incredibly famous for his Children’s Fables. His personality however is anything but. He’s grouchy, critical, morose, and actually genuinely one of my favorite characters.
Fate generally tends to get their characterizations spot-on… albeit a few exceptions like Edison, but even THAT has an explanation.
I want to see more shorts of TBSkyen's reactions to Fate's versions of historical people

This video would have been much more interesting if you bothered to actually look at the personality and compare them
Because his personality is actually kinda fitting, not completely but kinda, enough that the comparison can be interesting.

I would absolutely love to see a new series talking about fate servants
There's actually an in universe reason for it. Innocent Monster & the wish of his master, Kiara. Innocent monster gave him match burns, fish scales etc as an amalgamation of his stories, & the adorable schoolboy design is by the thought that someone so creative with such a heart for fantasy must surely have a sense of whimsy, & his master wanted a servant with the Child Attribute because she has been seen as nothing but an object of sexual gratification her entire life & desperately wished for a servant that wouldn't see her that way as well, thus Hans
I didn’t know he was danish

I’ll have you know that only his body changed, his personality is mostly spot on.
They gave him blue hair and pronouns, as they should.
Please do more stuff from fate
Andersen, as many have said, definitely had much more than just the look. You can just hear his voice once, and you can tell there's more to it.
