I was fortunate to work on the Tom Jones Show in Los Angeles. I was particularly impressed by his commitment to the music. During camera rehearsals, when all he was needed to do was move around the stage at various points in the song, he blasted out as if there was an audience in the theatre. He NEVER gave anything but his best.
Also, a true gentleman without the BS of stardom. Good guy!

I worked at a casino resort where Tom Jones put on a concert . I was setting things up for the show and so I got to watch from the wings. His voice was so powerful it made my jaw drop from the first verse he sang. He was nice to all of us also. He was having fun that night and so everyone else there did as well.

I saw Tom Jones at a northern club in 1965 just after he'd had his first record in the charts. I think he was 19 or 20 yo at the time. He walked on that stage and blew the audience outta the water with power and presence. I never forgotten that night. It was around 60 years ago.

Frank Sinatra once told Tom Jones back in the 1960's that if he didn't tone down the way he belted out his songs, he would lose his voice in a few years. Well I saw him perform back in 2005 (he was 65 then), his voice was every bit as powerful as it was back in the 60's. A natural phenomena.

But it's only been in the last four or five months - of really listening to their songs - that I've realised what a beautiful sweet voice John Lennon had. It was a different quality to Tom Jones'.
Paul and George also had beautiful voices. Put together their harmonies were so lovely because, apart from being naturally musical, they had the same accent - identical vowel sounds. (By the by, I'm a bloke not a woman). 🦘

Tom and Elvis were also good friends and a funny story was when Green, Green Grass of Home was first released Elvis was on the bus and they had just left Graceland headed back to LA when it came on the radio. Elvis said boy that's a good song, call the DJ and ask him to play it again. So they grabbed the satellite phone on the bus and called and he played it again. Then they did it again so it got played three times in a row! Yes it was good to be Elvis back in the day. 😀

Tom Jones was my Mother's absolute favorite. When I was 14 my family was vacationing in San Diego and we had tickets to see Tom Jones. Jimi Hendrix was playing the same venue the night before TJ. My Mother refused to let me go see Hendrix as there would be "drugs". So, my Dad suggested my brother and I go to a double feature of Woodstock and Easy Rider. That was cool. Next night we arrive at the Sports Arena, Marijuana openly being smoked everywhere (my first exposure to weed), the comedian Norm Crosby opened and joked the smoke was left over from Hendrix the night before. Then Gladys Knight and the Pipps, great show, then Tom Jones hit the stage and bras, panties, and hotel room keys rained down on him the entire show. My Dad seemed amused the entire evening and said afterward he thought Hendrix wouldn't have been a bad influence. Two months later when Hendrix died my Mom told me she was sorry she didn't let me see him. I really enjoyed Tom's show, especially when he did duets with Janis Joplin, C,S,N,&Y, etc.

Good for you for having the courage to say so. The Lennon cult is a sad & childish legacy of the great Beatles days - worse yet, they believe he 'wrote' many, many songs for which he only wrote lyrics or suggested them. For those who haven't 'met him' ; ), you can see for yourself by reading his own words in so many interviews & in 'In His Own Write'; the writings of George Martin & Geoff Emerick; many bootlegs & out-takes; and bios of Beatles insiders. Paul & Ringo are too nice to tell the whole truth, esp. after Lennon's unfortunate death, but their occasional comments are def. revealing. He did have a better side, but he's not the Saint John or the white-robed Jesus-like master musician that he's credited with being.

Great Lennon stories by Tom. They sound true because that was typical Lennon behavior from time to time. Btw, Tom covered many a Beatle song.

I was there in the heyday, and get how significant they were in their time that others who didn't ride that era train won't, ever. But to coming generations, his significance will just be a page in a history book noting he wrote some songs a hundred years ago, like Parry or Elgar, although their lyrics and tunes endure eternal whereas time will ensure Lennon's are interred into a 'grave of past chic' like Sid Bechet ....if he's lucky.
