+Billy Cobb I actually got my information from the foreword of The Complete Visual Dictionary(2006) where Rob Coleman(one of Lucasfilm's animation directors) says "...we knew Lucas had written a fabled nine episodes, but there was only speculation back then[1983] as to whether he would ever return to the series." From that I gathered that George Lucas planned ad wrote 9 films, but never told anyone that he actually was going to make more after ROTJ
My mom used to work at movie theaters and I'd seen so many major 80's movies (Raiders, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop) and I was fortunate to see Return of the Jedi 8 times when it was first released. The 80's were amazing.
Jason Malmberg Lol I wonder why he said that it was random lol. He should have stated. “Oh yeah after I get back from london visiting the royal family. What’s up Diana.”
$4.50 in 1983 is equivalent to $11.18 today when adjusted for inflation. An adult matinee at the theater in Highland Mall currently costs $9.00 and an evening ticket is $11.

walter w God that sounds great. I hope these new ones can one day pull that off. There's been some terrific moments. But haven't pulled that off quite yet for me. Maybe just because those were such a big deal then an there was nothing like it at all back then. Now there's tons of space type monies. But I think the third one of this new trilogy will be incredible and be an amazing film.

The Dude 7 even Mark hamil said In the 80s that 7 8 and 9 we’re gonna start happening by 2011-2012 and that was when Disney bought Star Wars. George is from the future. From a galaxy far far away
One of the happiest memories I have was Me and Dad going to see this in 83 when I was a young kid. He was only on this earth for 58 years, and we were just lower middle -class, but we had enough fun and great memories to fill 10 lifetimes.
I saw Empire and Jedi in a theater with a bigger screen than today's IMAX. It also had quadrophonic sound and I'll never forget how the walkers battle shook the theater!

I really miss these kind of days. When people would walk into a theater with an open mind. No obnoxious cell phones, nobody texting/snapchatting/tweeting during the movie. When people left the theater, some might not have enjoyed it, but the vast majority did. This was before it was "cool" and "edgy" to see every new movie in the franchise and desperately search for reasons to hate it. The internet has poisoned the movie going experience. We feel better about ourselves when we can go home, sign up to be a RUclips star so we can make money from bashing and hating the new movies, and hating the people that made them because "Oh they don't care about making a good movie all they care about is money". I miss the days when people just watched movies to be entertained. If you didn't like it, great. Nobody has to enjoy anything. But it really seems like back in this era people who didn't enjoy these movies would just tell you they didn't like it, rather then writing a thesis about how horrible it is and ironically trying to make money from your criticisms of people making movies to make money.
Philip Gregory Exactly right. The new edgy is treating a lame corporate product like a masterpiece, and denouncing all criticism as invalid. The bandwagon is all the rage today.
Dantius The difference between you and me is that I waited for the movie to be released to form an opinion about it, whereas you went into the "corporate driven" movie with that in your head so of course you didn't enjoy it. The proof of my post, is the criticism of Disney people are giving the last jedi. They all claim the force awakens was a copy, yet for some odd reason they decided to continue to give these "corporate driven" movie makers their money after they have demonstrated they "copied a new hope" and continuously see each new movie they release just to upload videos on RUclips begging for subscribers. Then they say they hate how Disney is only making these movies to make money, which is damn ironic because the RUclips reviewers make their complaining videos to, of course, make money!
"9 part series". Lucas always intended to create 9 films. His plan was: - Create the middle 3 first. - Create a backstory to Darth Vader to explain the lore with 3 more movies. - Use the aged actors from the first 3 to make a final 3 part series concluding the story.
You have NO IDEA. Internet & social media desensitized youth to violence/pornography and ruined human interaction/manners. There was always trouble makers, but at least they had some respect & FEAR of authority. Now when i leave my house i have to worry about whether a 12yo & his friends might try to kill me if i confront them for doing something bad! Our neighbor had his throat slashed in THE SUBURBS for confronting young teens drinking beers & vaping in the school playground at 3 in the afternoon. Turning away from Jesus/The Bible brings societal destruction.
qwe6348 you’re probably right. My point was I paid $5-6 extra dollars for an experience that felt the same as if I’d just seen a normal showing. I didn’t notice any HD sound or video compared to a normal showing. Maybe I would need to watch one in RPX and then immediately go watch a normal showing to see the difference? 🤷🏻♂️
SEAtown Rider yeaa I feel the same sometimes, sometimes it's hard to tell but when you go to a standard showing the frames per second are weird , sometimes things will look more blurry and things kinda slide in a weird way
I remember gladly paying $4.50 to $5.00 in those days to get into the Movie theater, and never thought anything of it! Although, the Movies were far better back then, then they are today. Good Movies are much rarer today, than they were in the 1980's. Compared to what we pay today, it was a bargain! My, how times have changed!
A little off the subject, but growing up in Austin as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, I thought it was a sleepy place and Dallas and Houston was where all the action was with professional baseball and football, AstroWorld, and Six Flags. I was blessed to live there and didn’t even know it!
I remember reading, I think it was Electric Company Magazine, an article from 1980 or so, describing a story meant to be covered in 9 movies. Star Wars, Empire, Jedi then three before and three after.
I can mostly agree. Can’t say I miss the perms and public hair bushes. But overall the people were way cooler, much more relaxed and happy. I see girls today with short shorts hiked up over there belly buttons, ass cheeks hanging out, looking like hookers in cold climates glued to their phones and they are dull and boring. Everything they say or do comes right off the internet. They don’t know the difference in sexy vs sexual. Like Salsa vs Twerking. Know what I mean? They have these weird fucked up high expectations, swiping left or right, when they are typically lazy chunkers. The future sucks.
Dang. I was born way after the original trilogy came out, but if I could only time travel back to that time and experience those films in a theater... That just sounds so incredible to me.
When I was a kid in 1977, I paid ¢.50 to watch Star Wars at the matinee at the Base Movies, I found that in the seat cushions, plus another ¢.50 cents I had in my piggy bank for popcorn and a coke.
I know this theatre is renovated by now, but I'm looking out for any buildings in the distance to see where this was. That building in the background at 0:36 looks like a boat rental, so it's defiantly near the theatre, and the bridge at 0:08
When i saw this with my friend at the cinema, we were both blown away by this movie. It was a SCI FI roller coaster ride ! Certainly one of the greatest Cinema experiences i've ever seen.
I went to the movies with someone in 1993 to see "Cliffhanger" and almost laughed when the guy took with the intention of reading outside the theater until the movie started. No, that's when you go in the theater to get your seat.
Those were the good old days. It’s 2018. They killed Star Wars. ORDER 66 issued on Rian Johnson. He will go down as one of the worst directors/writers in the history of sci-fi.
If you look at the original, movies today for rjr first time you wouldnt be saying such stuoid things. You hold an attwchment to them because you were probably much younger. They werent better, its sentimental value that makes you believe its better.
those were good times. Everybody was completey exited. The last Jedi, what a commercial shallow crap in comparison. Star wars ended with episode 6. Thats what the force whispered in my ears!
Sorry, but you're not allowed to dislike the latest corporate product. Despite being overwhelmed with numerous glaring flaws and spitting on everyone who likes Star Wars most, the film is funny. That means you need to like it. Now get back in line, consumer. You're clearly just a Star Wars fanboy and racist neo-Nazi who hates women and doesn't like that his fan theory was wrong. That is the only reason anyone could possibly dislike this film.
Dantius actually its the people who hate the movie that are being pricks. I enjoyed it, therefore I have no love or real interest in Star Wars, support the SJW liberal agenda, and am also a complete moron with horrible taste in movies. I haven't seen a single person accuse anyone who disliked the movie of being the things you listed and I doubt you have either.
Paul Blackburn Sorry, but no. I have been completely respectful towards others in regards to my disagreement on the quality of this film, yet still, everywhere I go, all I hear from the film's defenders are accusations of being angry at the film because my "fan theories " were wrong (even though I always hated those theories), being a racist/sexist, or OT purist. This has been the constant reaction everywhere I go. Just see the comments for "I Hate Everything's" videos on TLJ. His legions of fans, for example, are happy to denounce the "fanboys". I see it EVERYWHERE. If you do not know this, then either you are not looking, or you are the one lying, because yes, that is exactly what you are accusing me of, which basically proves my point. Just accusations.
Dantius I looked. I'm looking again now. Still don't see accusations of being racist, sexist, or anyone saying you HAVE to like this movie. If I have to look this hard then it's surely not the majority, much less ALL you hear from them as you describe. Looking at your first comment I can tell you are the type of person to overreact. What even drove you to post it? The original comment didnt mention fans of TLJ, the first reply only stated the series doesnt end just because he wants it to, not accusing him of anything you said. You're hate distorts people's words into insults, very un-Jedi if you ask me.
Paul Blackburn Very well, here is an article that describes EXACTLY what I am talking about, rationalising why people disliked the film by assuming they are mad that their theories were wrong, for example. Your own behaviour is proof of that, accusing me of being hateful. Furthermore, I was not referring to the first response, but to responses in general. www.theodysseyonline.com/its-time-stop-whining-about-the-new-star-wars-movie Here is a whole Reddit thread full of people trying to rationalise the dislike for the film, especially with "blind hatred", "whiny", and "sexism". www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/7ni4l1/refuting_your_last_jedi_plot_holes/ Want more sexism accusations? Just ask Daisy Ridley herself, reducing criticism of Rey being a Mary Sue to sexism. ruclips.net/video/1kmggaXRUKc/видео.html I am thankful that more and more people are already starting to turn against this film, so the petty comments about "whiny fanboys" are not as numerous as they were a month ago. You should see the early comments on the new Solo trailer. Everyone who said anything negative is immediately attacked.
Its interesting how people didn't understand/didn't love Empire Strikes when it first came out; then they fell in love with Return of the Jedi three years later. Now the relationship is the reverse with Empire being the best, and Jedi being the worst of the best. Really shows you how perspectives change over time. Maybe the same could be said over the Sequel Trilogy????
Oh it certainly will. People are more positive about the prequels these days. I think the sequels have some genuine issues but I do foresee the reactionary internet mobs dying down eventually. But then again maybe not, our movie-going culture is entirely different these days, especially with the internet.
Notice how she called it a 9-part series in 1983, interesting
i know right? had to triple check that

From that I gathered that George Lucas planned ad wrote 9 films, but never told anyone that he actually was going to make more after ROTJ

Exactly right.
His plan was:
- Create the middle 3 first.
- Create a backstory to Darth Vader to explain the lore with 3 more movies.
- Use the aged actors from the first 3 to make a final 3 part series concluding the story.
I was 11 in 1983 and saw Return Of The Jedi like 20 times.
Is it me or were the people at that time more polite, friendlier and more civilised than today?
certainly. the world is a colder place now
Thinner too.
Its crazy how 4.50 to 5 dollars would be considered expensive for a ticket in the 80's when today some theaters charge you 20 for an adult ticket
0:38 OH MY GOD ITS MR PLINKET BACK IN THE 80'S
Before his wife died in a freak car accident. He bought a cat soon after.
TheCosmicFireStar Before his son hanged himself.
+The Model Kit Base before he even met Bambi at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Jersey.
I think he's around 80 years old in this clip.
Prequel Plinket.
Thank you for this. Brings back memories.
4.50 to 5 bucks...wow
There 15 now
Boondock Taint I just paid $17.50 for some stupid RPX experience that felt like the same.
Well you have to remember about inflation.
SEAtown Rider yeaa but they didn't have HD sound and HD movies back then either , the theaters back then must've smelled and probably lacked shit
qwe6348 you’re probably right.
0:17 So, Lucas planned the sequel trilogy back in '83 ??
Nicolò Giani yep, he was setting it up from ESB
was originally about luke finding his sister(before leia was his sister).
I love how when the guys said great visuals the screen glitches
“It will also be felt in your wallets. Tickets are going for $4.50 - $5.00.” Hahahahahaha!
A little off the subject, but growing up in Austin as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, I thought it was a sleepy place and Dallas and Houston was where all the action was with professional baseball and football, AstroWorld, and Six Flags. I was blessed to live there and didn’t even know it!
that footage made me want to watch rotj again
I remember reading, I think it was Electric Company Magazine, an article from 1980 or so, describing a story meant to be covered in 9 movies. Star Wars, Empire, Jedi then three before and three after.
Complaining about $5 movie ticket prices.... if they only knew the power of the Price Gouge
Nick Manzo In 35 years going up $5 isn't too bad . Now the pop corn and soda, That's just ridiculous!
Inflation, you mean
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing Fox!
I wish I was there! Return of the Jedi is one of my most favorite Star Wars movies!
Ian Preston My Favorite is Either A New Hope Or Empire Strikes Back
You can watch it everytime you want in your home, I love this times.
Lord Pol i love rogue one better than any of your
the best Any of your what?
Watching this takes me back to when I was 11. Those were incredible times.
"Darth Vader should shout 'nooooooooo' before throwing the Emperor down that shaft. It ruined the film for me that he didn't" - Nobody
fire whoever did the audio for this
1:27 Damn those girls in the background with the shorts. I miss this decade so much.
The shorts are shorter and tighter in 2017. Do you just miss that style from 1983 or your youth?
Hibbs4Prez The style and the fact the people were more relaxed and didn’t get triggered and politically correct
The guys have tight shorts too. And people complain about skinny jeans now. Lol
CaptainMyCaptain well that's modern women BTFO
Dang. I was born way after the original trilogy came out, but if I could only time travel back to that time and experience those films in a theater... That just sounds so incredible to me.
rofl $5? My ticket to The Force Awakens was $19 bucks.
Yeah. That 19 dollar ticket wasn't even counting my $6 medium drink and $8 medium popcorn.
westcoastOGee yeah but adjusted for inflation 5$ is about the same
When I was a kid in 1977, I paid ¢.50 to watch Star Wars at the matinee at the Base Movies, I found that in the seat cushions, plus another ¢.50 cents I had in my piggy bank for popcorn and a coke.
I know this comment is old, but what kind of theater do you go to? I only pay 7 dollars, and it used to be just 6 until a couple years ago
why are people so amazed by the effects of inflation?
Just finished watching return of the Jedi for the first time, now I’m starting the prequels tomorrow
whoa! this is rare footage of an alternate reality where barbs from stranger things is a dude!
I know this theatre is renovated by now, but I'm looking out for any buildings in the distance to see where this was. That building in the background at 0:36 looks like a boat rental, so it's defiantly near the theatre, and the bridge at 0:08
1:05 “...as soon as I come back from London”....sadly, Little Timmy never made it back 😄
And now, Return of the Jedi is 40!
And I'm comment #1,000!
9 part series...how did they know
These were simpler times when people could just enjoy a movie without nitpicking it to death.
Now your talking!
0:15 "3rd flick of a 9 part series"
Trevor Cutler And 35 years later still one to go!
When i saw this with my friend at the cinema, we were both blown away by this movie. It was a SCI FI roller coaster ride !
Certainly one of the greatest Cinema experiences i've ever seen.
I had my first movie experience at this same theater. Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
my left ear really enjoyed this.
Kody Eldridge 🤣
And why is that guy carrying a book?
+Josh Looman Because he wanted something to read while he was waiting in line???
+Josh Looman Why aren't you?
+Josh Looman That's called a book? What is a book? Like files?
I went to the movies with someone in 1993 to see "Cliffhanger" and almost laughed when the guy took with the intention of reading outside the theater until the movie started. No, that's when you go in the theater to get your seat.
If one comment on RUclips could encapsulate stupid millenials yours is it.
They didn't have movie theaters in London.
Stevan Glez no electricity either.
Those were the good old days. It’s 2018. They killed Star Wars. ORDER 66 issued on Rian Johnson. He will go down as one of the worst directors/writers in the history of sci-fi.
So did George Lucas in the era of the prequels. Look at how people view him now.
I was only 3 years old back then. Must have been a great time
Back when star wars was actually worth watching.
ThomettProductions no I meant like back when Star Wars was actually good
ThomettProductions he’s just being dumb about the newer movies
If you look at the original, movies today for rjr first time you wouldnt be saying such stuoid things. You hold an attwchment to them because you were probably much younger. They werent better, its sentimental value that makes you believe its better.
Ben Duenes its stil
before the dark times... before the last jedi
Man, the 80s were an amazing time for pop culture...
AAAAAnd 34 years later Luke's whole character would be shit on before being killed off. Long live Disney Wars!!!
this vid makes me feel good
those were good times.
Paul Blackburn
Sorry, but no.
Paul Blackburn
Very well, here is an article that describes EXACTLY what I am talking about, rationalising why people disliked the film by assuming they are mad that their theories were wrong, for example. Your own behaviour is proof of that, accusing me of being hateful. Furthermore, I was not referring to the first response, but to responses in general.
www.theodysseyonline.com/its-time-stop-whining-about-the-new-star-wars-movie
Here is a whole Reddit thread full of people trying to rationalise the dislike for the film, especially with "blind hatred", "whiny", and "sexism".
www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/7ni4l1/refuting_your_last_jedi_plot_holes/
Want more sexism accusations? Just ask Daisy Ridley herself, reducing criticism of Rey being a Mary Sue to sexism.
ruclips.net/video/1kmggaXRUKc/видео.html
I am thankful that more and more people are already starting to turn against this film, so the petty comments about "whiny fanboys" are not as numerous as they were a month ago. You should see the early comments on the new Solo trailer. Everyone who said anything negative is immediately attacked.
This video makes me so happy
I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING
Before the pequils and the sequels, before the dark age
God I miss the 80's in my youth.......when the real Star Wars was with us, good times.....good times.
Yoda dies.
❗SPOILER ALERT ❗
chemistryguy SON OF A BITCH
Imagine these guys watching the The Mandalorian now.
Back when movie goers weren't spoiled brats like they are today!
How did I find this clip it’s amazing!
This is before pc and feminism took over.
Notice how they said it was a nine-part series? There was a time when that was in doubt, but no longer.
Back when Star Wars was true and had an actual story. Farewell George Lucas!
I got news for ya, kid. Star Wars has never been true. It has always just been pretend.
The phantom menace. So entertaining to me. Very good movie I loved it. Don’t bother to reply because I don’t and won’t give a shit
Wow. Back when Star Wars and Austin didn’t suck
And then you get out from watching The Last Jedi...
Word has it, it was eerily similar to the people who got out from watching The Empire Strikes Back...
What a beautiful piece of history.
Oh my, back when America was still beautiful and white!!
Ikr
micjakes1 racist piece of shit!
That's a really interesting deleted scene in there, can't find it anywhere else online
