Film riot, Jess I love your work so much, I just started following you and I just saw there comes a knocking, you killed it bro, I am motivated and I'm going to make a shoot for film soon by the Inspiration I got from your shot film please reply me and encourage me in my film career
This is the ONLY tutorial on greenscreen that legitimately taught me how to properly key hair !!! My day job is in a greenscreen studio, with evenly lit cyc wall, really good lighting for the talent and a decent camera...yet I always seem to struggle keying out hair...most any kind of hair...until this tutorial ! In fact I was working on a project that the talent had especially difficult hair to key...so in real time I followed this tutorial to the letter and BING...BANG...BOOM !!! Clean Key !!! Thank-you many !!!!
Great video as always! One thing I want to mention - I'd recommend Key Cleaner that's built into After Effects for hair. Use Keylight and turn on Intermediate Results, use Key Cleaner and then Advance Spill Suppressor. Works wonders - even on 4:2:0 8bit footage.
@@atlithoreinarsson I've been keying long hair for so many years and can't believe I never knew this haha, though I do seem to still find new AE tips every month or two even now. Thank you so much!
I usually use Keylight+ Key Cleaner+Advanced Spill Suppressor, but invariably end up turning off Key Cleaner because it makes the edges look worse. Any idea how to keep Key Cleaner from creating muddy weird edges or adding strange additional edge pixels? (I'm sure there are no "ideal" settings you can recommend without seeing footage but in general are there some key cleaner settings you use often?.) I also just bought Primatte Keyer 6 and still having to choke in the matte a lot + getting edge chatter. Do you prefer Keylight, Primatte, or something else? thanks!
I started watching you guy's when I was 12 and here I am... 9 whole years later, watching your latest video whilst working on feature films. Didn't get a degree. Didn't even finish school, but the information and inspiration I found here was all I needed to obtain my dream job. From the bottom of my heart, thank you film riot. Couldn't have done it with out you guys
Trunk Films True. Though in my opinion Film riot does more of “Movie making and tips” and Cinecom does more of full VFX tutorials.Don’t get me wrong Film riot does a ton of VFX tutorials and Cinecom does Movie making tips but I think Film riot is more based on Film making and Cinecom is more based on VFX. Cinecom is one of my favorite channels for watching cool VFX effects. Just my opinion though. Thanks for sharing. Like for example this is a video about editing but lots of their videos are about film making in general. I’m probably wrong lol but this is what I thinl
Can't me more proud that I'm subscribed to this channel and have been watching their videos since 2017. The amount of film stuff Ryan has taught me and how Josh has made me laugh everytime is immense. This is the only channel I'll stick to for learning stuff forever....
Hey Ryan love that you guys are still making tutorials like this. Some things that really help me out that I feel are always been left out with Keying tutorials. Use false color on a monitor to make sure you have even light throughout the green screen (false-color won't work accurately if you're not in a rec 709 monitoring color space) the softer the light the better it will be evenly spread without Shadows. Make sure the subject is being lit with the correct environment in mind for the final result. use a fast shutter speed to eliminate motion blur. You can add motion blur later. Always grad your image or at least convert to rec709 before Keying. If you're having trouble use hsl select the green with the color dropper and isolate the color turn up the saturation. Hope it helps someone:)
Why are you guys so good. Like really, if y’all never existed, I don’t think my career would as well. I have been subscribed for so so long and I will never unsubscribe.
I was subbed to you guys way back like 10 years ago I got a 3 pack of your tee shirts when I was in about 5th grade one was a directors chair that said like a boss or something lol. I’m in film school now just came across your channel again.
Since we've started using Primatte from RG and doing some pre-cleanup with Neatvideo, our keying of hair has gotten much better and quicker. We also do the two-layer method so we can do the color separate from the key and we've been so happy with the results. Neatvideo and Primatte are both so fast, too, it's amazing our render times are like half the time or better. Chris Zwar also did a great super in-depth keying series on provideocoalition if you wanna check it out it's amazing.
I like you insert funny clips in between your explanations to keep us attentive, great job man, makes me not only try it but also respect more other content creators who edit with this level of detail, keep up the great work!.
Should have probably watched this video BEFORE I did a project where every shot is green screen and/or a composite of green screen shots. Great video. Maybe one thing I miss here: when there is too much of a green cast on the hair or face a hue vs hue tweak in the yellow/green range can do wonders.
what i also think is very important to sell the effect is that the background is shot with the same focal length as the talent/ foreground. something is very off if the bg is shot with eg 35mm and the talent with 85mm. 👀 also the height off the camera is important so the horizon and perspective are correct. really nice vid as always 👌🏻🔥🔥
Your vid helped me so much Ty. I never thought that as small as a problem as the hairs not showing gray would be the entire cause of my greenscreen hair issue XD.
FilmRiot has done so many tutorials on Green Screen but it has an advance ideas from time to time, I like it!, a F**k You version of Ryan is the OG Ryan Connolly in the FilmRiot series
It's painful how underrrated this channel is..... You guys would be better off making a gaming channel using the amazing humor and production value you can put into it ! i would definitely watch it! ❤ Do give it a thought... as a side project maybe?
I've recently started using Virtual production. I think that option is best for me because I can already see and change the lighting according to what I want it to look like. And I'm not the best with lighting. At least when I buy a decent green screen
Also, leaving the key on intermediate result will do away with any additional artifacing on your subject. :) Great episode! I could have use it last week on a project. Maybe I'll have to do a directors/enhanced VFX cut now. :)
Even after almost 20years of keying - we're still learning. Gladly the guy we key all the time is bald so a lot less hassle :)

Josh is pretty great. Amazing man. I'd love to buy him an ice cold cola sometime.
Josh in the second shot looks like he's cosplaying Edgar Wright.

Wow that is amazing! I never knew that, just tried it and got great results!

Damn the tips in this video are gold! Thanks guys :-)
PS: You should sell big head Josh dolls for on the dashboard of your car!
Omg hi Cinecom! I watch your videos every day!
I wonder how cenecom comment here 👍
Imagine Jordy big headed trying to dance as Josh 🤯
I definitely should buy those dolls
CINECOM!!!!! Oh my god :D
That ramp blur technique is brilliant and will definitely help me on my next project.
I’ve always found hair problematic when it came to keying, so this was good information to keep in mind, Thank you.
Big headed dancing and singing Josh is the most disturbing thing that I never knew that I needed in my life...
he might just replace Turbulent Displacement Josh as my goto Josh
Josh is the best. Saved my puppy's life
Not only have cameras and software gotten better and better, but Film Riots gotten better and better! Much ♥ to y'all!!

Using diffusers and controlling the direction of your lights is instrumental to filmmaking.
It applies here too. 🎥✨
Hey Film riot. I just want to let you know that ur one of the most helpful movie making RUclips channel. Thanks so much for the tutorials and tips.
eh, most helpful? idk bout that

The first method worked as a charm. Thank you ❤
I'd actually be interested to see you do a tutorial on lighting the greenscreen. What do you use and how to you set it up?
Same!
Josh the bobble head, love it. Almost iconic as “BAMIEWHAM”, witch is still the message notifier on my phone. #LoveYourWork
+100000 for Composite Brush. That plugin has saved me more times than not.
0:54 Ryan on Josh's back. This is the bromance I asked for 🥺😍😂
I was just about to start looking for good stock footage for a client's business video when you kindly reminded me about Artgrid. Thanks!
I need to see a full video of you singing that song!!!!OMG! 😆so good!
These are legitimately helpful, thanks again you guys!

I miss this, Ryan in talking to Josh off cam, it was hilarious on that episode when Josh went too far and kidnapped you into the back of the car😂😂😂
Another great tutorial! The new Hitfilm software is my new go to for this. Their features make it super easy,it's wonderful.
THANK YOU. Hot darn. Love you guys
I’ve always loved this small sketches you and josh do, so wholesome😂👌
For fine hair details, I use IBK (image base keyers) and it works perfect! Great tip to create the ramp for the Lens Blur! Loved that! Thanks Ryan!

EXACTLY what I needed
You two need to make a comedy movie together. Haha. Seriously.
This is much better than the keying in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Ryan’s response at 9:38 had me dead 😂😂 you guys are so good at comedy!
josh is great yes

Josh Connolly. The epitome of manliness. Haha
As an individual with long and insanely messy hair, I appreciate this XD
I need this tutorial for a long time
8:28 Makes me Happy. Oh so Happy.
We all love Josh, such a handsome man!
..lmao.. you guys should do a stand up comedy duo.. hilarious!.. crack me up.. hehe 😁👍
You can apply key color so you don't have to mask the subject, it creates a shape around him automatically.
this is all pretty cool but after the resolve episode about why its really good i kinda wish this was in resolve
Y’all are hilarious
Damn. Just two masks and two keys and that`s it. Great, thanks a lot!!
Tnx guys :D very matte tutorial

I'm glad I don't have any hair. Makes life so much easier to key. Haha!
Josh is on par with the dos equis guy
Awesome
hahaa, no waaay! this film is very good imho!
Guys you have to separate your RGB path from your Alpha path. This way your keyer doesn't interfere with your RGB channels.
Love it!
Thx bro
Also, leaving the key on intermediate result will do away with any additional artifacing on your subject. :) Great episode! I could have use it last week on a project. Maybe I'll have to do a directors/enhanced VFX cut now. :)
...."F*ck you man",...." There it is, welcome back man" hahahahaha!
That’s the key.
I think I'm in love with Josh...
Great videos! - What camera is best for heavy greenscreen vfx work, and what is your go to. (these clips actually turned out good too)
