I'd add using precomp with high contrasted rec709 with keylight in "screen matte" view mode as a lumma matte for a raw footage layer below. It's my "plan B" when greenscreen is really bad

WTF!!! I was just setting up my green screen and it fell down exactly like this 10 mins ago. I hated myself and cancelled shooting and came back to youtube to watch some videos & this is the first one I saw!! What a coincidence 😂😂💔 I can't believe it .. hope your lights are safe man!
"90% of the time of fixing stuff in post-production can be avoided ( by proper lighting )" As a compositor myself, I was almost in tear hearing that. You know how it feels when you received footage with uneven lit lighting and windy green screen.
As a backlight I used a magenta filter quite often. Magenta = Blue and Red. Combined with the green bleed, the color shifts more towards the white. It helped me a lot in creating cleaner keys.
My tip: In some cases you do not need a green screen. For example, for very short scenes, it is sometimes enough to cut out the actor with the Rotobrush-Tool in After Effects. This can be faster than the whole greenscreen setup.
101: Download Nuke 102: Do the alpha key and the despill separately. 103: split the alpha key into core + edge mattes. 104: Garbage mattes can be keyed with another keyer or roto'd (masked). 105: Use the IBK keyer in Nuke over keylight in most circumstances. 106: Use the clean screen from the IBK colour to drive other stuff, for example you can divide the plate by the clean screen to get a image where the screen is white, and also has eliminated all wrinkles/imperfections. You can then multiply this over your background to get more hair detail. 107: Use additive keyer tools. 108: Don't avoid shooting 180 degree shutter, put the extra effort into making the motion blur look good instead. It's a lot easier with Nuke. 109: Avoid shooting in 4:2:2 or lower, and if you have to, a luma key will give you better edges if a chroma key falls apart. 110: Sometimes just grading one of the colour channels will give the best key for a specific region. 111: Watch Tony Lyons keying tutorials on youtube. 112: Use DasGrain gizmo to correctly reintroduce grain, even in despilled areas where the colour has changed significantly. 113: Learn some basic despill equations, heres one: g > (r+b)/2 ? (r+b)/2 : g. This is saying, if the value of green is greater than the average of red and blue, make green the average of red and blue, otherwise, keep the incoming green colour. 114: If you have control over the luma of the background, try make it as close to the screen luma as possible, to aid in integrating edges. 115: You can use an edge detect to despill edges separately. 116: If in quite a pickle, you can use an edge detect + vector generator + vector blur to add more motion blur to the edges of a keyed element. Use sparingly... 117: Use lightwraps (preferably physical exponential glows) to integrate edges where bright objects are behind the keyed subject. 118: Sometimes you just have to roto masks for selective grades/colour corrects/despills. 119: Sometimes you just have to bust out a roto or rotopaint node to fill holes in the matte. 120: Make sure the field of view of the background being added in matches the fov from the key footage (use the same focal length). 121: I have more but I'm tired and need to go to bed, good night.
do tutorials on at least after effects or film production and i will sub ur channel. i dont use maya / Houdini cox i dont have money to buy. but would love to see ur tuts on green screen or tips on 3d
Awesome video, there's only one part I would recommend caution with, which is tip 76 - shooting vertically in order to fit more of the subject in. It sounds intuitive and I used that technique for a video, but as it turns out that makes it a lot harder in post production to match the perspective because the part you're more likely to want in the final frame (the talent's face, for example) will look like it was shot from below because in the vertical frame it was way above the horizon line.
Thank you for dishing out highly detailed content in such a way that is easy to assimilate. I got hooked on your channel after watching the video on Multicam using Tentacle, to ATEM mini Pro to 100,000 Streaming Setup and now this. Well done and cheers.
I got a giant collapsable greenscreen to bring on location. The hardest part was figuring out how to collapse it when we were done with the shoot. I practiced at home and still embarrassed myself in front of a client by taking 5 minutes to get it closed at their office.
I almost knocked a tooth out opening mine up the same day I met a newly hired assistant's husband. I admit I have it left at full size because I'm scared of it now lol
I did my last green screen shoot with a GH4 and shot it in 4K h.264 and it brought AE to its knees! It barely played back and exports took hours. For the second shoot, I switch to all-intra HD AND rather than round-tripping between AE and Premiere, I did it all in Resolve, using DeltaKey in Fusion. Not only looked the results a lot better, exports went from 10 hours to 10 minutes for 20-minute clips!!
When will that feature film be released? The one about the middle aged Parisian dog who steals a car and drives into the French countryside to explore his existential crisis? I am very much looking forward to it!

What an AWESoME video with tips that I wish I had 11 years ago, 9 years ago, and NOW! Mistakes I made already; not enough lights, not the right balance of lights, washed the green screen (work with animals.. had to!, might want to paint a wall instead) then being able to edit and know the extent the editing software can do to manipulate the green screen....and even more, not being able to run or render the content because the CPU couldn't keep up, and to mention a silly one, ordering a freaking green screen the size of the Earth and deal with wrinkles for life! Lastly, not having enough people to help get the work done, overworked is an understatement when creating and maintaining a channel. Thank you again! Great video!

If you want to keep your background, you can still use a green screen. Take a picture of your background from the perspective of your webcam. Put that on the green screen and add your effects such as blur for depth of field, lighting, and even equipment you can't actually afford. Never have to tidy up before recording again!

These are some great tips...and lots of them! Thanks for the help. Figuring out decent green screen shots is tough and I definitely got a few new ideas on how to improve them.
This video reminds me of when my screen and overhead lights came tumbling down at my house in Tokyo. Moments later, I heard my roommate call from downstairs "Are you okay?" Haha!
Excellent tips. I'm a curious cat so I will ask the following questions below. Some of the effects I ask below could be achieved in post/software but....what could be done more easily with screen. I'd like to see the following tips covered in an upcoming episode. - how to "iron" out the wrinkles in cheap green screen (in case you can't stretch it enough) - what are top 3 "brands" of greenscreen (so many $300 kits with lights are so cheap and come folded & wrinkled) - how can you add a air blower on subject without making the screen flutter - how best to transport screen for mobile shoots (I assume you roll it and don't fold it) - show more unusual uses like "pouring" green liquid in a cup or opening door in greenscreen wall exposing a real object - unusual shots with greenscreen body suit or shooting greenscreen paint at a wall for possible splatter shot scenes - wearing green fx contact lenses to expose zombie eye look or some unusual effect as subject faces camera thanks I cut my screen since it was massive and my room doesn't allow for it (its also much cheaper and thinner than I expected)
Silly tip. If you decide to paint your green screen and include painting the floor, make sure the staff has a clean pair of shoes. Also, if you have a dedicated chroma room, consider having one side for green, and the other for blue.
@@zebrazone Hubby and I work in our churches puppet ministry. - how can you add a air blower on subject without making the screen flutter
- how best to transport screen for mobile shoots (I assume you roll it and don't fold it)
- show more unusual uses like "pouring" green liquid in a cup or opening door in greenscreen wall exposing a real object
- unusual shots with greenscreen body suit or shooting greenscreen paint at a wall for possible splatter shot scenes
- wearing green fx contact lenses to expose zombie eye look or some unusual effect as subject faces camera
