I’m on Cape Breton Island, NS, here you’re lucky to rent a single room for $1K/month. Sometimes there are 2 beds per room, and each “bed renter” pays rent. It’s absolutely insane.
Crazy I remember buying land for cheap there with only a couple k down and then paid only a couple hundred a month until I paid it off. I built my own little log cabin and it was a gorgeous property on about 5 acres. Even with interest it was maybe 15k and that was less than a decade ago.
I think there is also a situation where there are homes that could be rented, but with so much red tape that people don't want to be involved. This is over twenty years ago that my grandfather had a nice basement apartment in the GTA that he rented out, and had a tenant that wouldn't pay and wouldn't leave. Took years to get the tenant evicted and after that my grandfather said no more tenants!
Absolutely true! I won’t rent my basement suite due to these reasons and many friends (older) that own a few houses won’t rent to anyone but good friends now either. Way too many bad tenants we don’t want the trouble!
And don't forget you might have to pay capital gain taxes when you rent out your basement suite even though the house is your principal residence. It doesn't make any sense at all when the government ask home owner to rent out their basement suite for extra income and at the same time charge capital gain taxes assuming you sold your portions of your property as rental property. Then you have to deal with the non paying tenants and pay your taxes.
You know things are getting bad when people resort to these kinda scams .the laws need to be tougher in Canada , people do this kinda stuff cus they rarely go to jail if they get caught..
This is crazy......about 10 years ago edmonton you can rent an apartment for $700 and a whole basement for $500. Now? A friend told me their apartment is $1800 and that's a good price. My mortgage is that price per month right now and I'm lucky I bought my home before the market really went insane.
@derekpam7149 bought a 17 yr old small 2 story house in sherwood park for $400 000 in 2021. Used RRSP and savings still high. Liberals already did damage at that point. And after we moved in the heater gave out in a month. Fridge died 6 months later. Oven and overhead microwave died last year. We had to replace everything and theres lot of problems with the house. The owner and sales person wouldn't deduct any money. We had no choice cause the place we were renting the owners were gonna do renovations and move in. We had 1 week to get out.
crazy as you can buy a whole house in small towns presently for about 50k. they are not the fanciest but are move in ready and have everything you need. Its probably because no one wants to be landlord especially in Ontario because as this video shows people do not want to leave when asked to!
While I feel for anyone renting that reality is is that it is not your apartment you literally rented it for a temporary amount of time. If you wanted something that was "yours" (I put quotes as its never really yours if you have to pay extortion property taxes) then you need to buy property. If you cannot afford that where you currently live then move to where you can. You can still as of this writing buy a move in ready house on a little lot for around 50k. Yes you will be in the middle of nowhere but that is the trade off. Are you so addicted to take out and delivery, entertainment like movie theatres and clubs or do you just want to live somewhere simply as less of a slave? If you are able to work remotely (either from home or camp jobs) you have tones of options if you can't then you may need to adjust your lifestyle but there is always some work even in the middle of nowhere! @@MagpieMalone Sadly yes! It's totally illegal but the government doesn't care! As the law states that no government property is subject to taxation so if they own it they cannot tax it. For Renovictions or moving a family member in just requires a one year occupancy. The owner does not even need to live there as no one from the government will bother to check, the place can just sit empty for a year. It is very common, for example say you have a rent controlled building and your tenant is paying $1400 on that 3 bedroom when you can get well over $3000 at current market rate for it.
The reality is is that they own it and can do with it what they like. I do not think that you should be able to do evictions like they do on the Reserves (48 hours to get out) but giving someone 60 days notice is very very reasonable!
