    I purchased a new 2018 KTM 1090 Adventure R in July of 2018. I put on 31,000+ miles since then with a number of trips around the western US. 99% of that being on paved roads with far less off road than I had imagined when purchasing the bike. At around 13K miles, just out of warranty from time and mileage, the bike started back firing, stalling and then after a week or so finally died and wouldn't start. Turned out to be the ignition pulse generator diagnosed and repaired at the KTM dealer where I purchased her. She is again starting to show these early symptoms. I replaced the clutch slave with an Oberon as the stock one was weeping fluid. The clutch now is really showing signs of heat fade and I plan on replacing it soon. Valve clearance check and adjustment is very challenging task. Changing the plugs requires movement of the radiator to remove the front cylinder coil pack. There are 4 plugs. The rear brake pads when new are pretty thin and I've replaced them twice. I may use them a bit much as this is my daily driver with lots of heavy, slow traffic and lane filtering. Below about 45 degrees F, the menu buttons don't rebound and pressing one, you will see the menu cycle automatically through all the various screens. The rear shock is getting kind of wonky, haven't figured that out yet. The tubeless wheels are made so by a special band covering the spoke nipples, I have had a number of punctures that have penetrated that band causing leaks. The things that I don't like about my KTM are more the challenge of maintenance rather than reliability. I love my KTM and am considering purchasing the KTM 1290 Super Duke. It could be that I overlook the problems because of emotions rather than pure analysis of the cost, time of repairs and maintenance. I have a complete record of everything spent or done on her but I have never totaled it all up. Perhaps I don't really want to know. Yes, my KTM is a female, in part as she can be a bit temperamental for no apparent reason.

      Thanks for the comprehensive comment, Richard. I appreciate it! Yeah, I am sure they are awesome bikes. But those are the things that always worry me. Ease of maintenance, especially if you are far from home (like here in Africa) and the number of electronic components that could give issues. That's why I love the older, simpler bikes. Only problem is, they aren't as much fun as the modern KTMs. I'd love to own a KTM 950 Adventure with the carburetors.
      That's life: The reliable things are boring and the fun things are trouble ;)

      @@blackswanodysseys The only problem I have had with the fuel pump is the locking connector on the fuel like. It is not always easy to disconnect and reconnect properly and it has become disconnected even days after reconnection. I have heard of other people such as yourself having to replace the fuel pump far too early and sometimes just out of warranty. So much so, that I would carry a spare on long trips. Good luck with you and your 1290.

    Put 25,000-miles on an 18 1290 SAR in fourteen months. During a trip the motor suffered a catastrophic failure two days before returning home. I'm currently waiting for warranty resolution. I've owned many Hondas (along with BMW, Ducati, Triumph and Kawasaki) and I will likely buy a Honda for my next new bike purchase. The SAR is an absolute blast to ride in anger, but the build quality is objectively a step down from most bikes in the same price point. And yes, my bike was maintained to the highest standards. It had been ridden to 45 states (including Alaska) and through most of Canada. Cheers.

If you want to have a laugh, search here on KTM Kymko pistons, which crumble away in the 2stroke bikes. You know what Kymko usually builds? Cheap Chinese scooters. Now the produce pistons for KTM. Also investigate which KTMs are produced in China now and not in Austria.

    I was traveling on my 2013 KTM 690 from Oregon to Ushuaia Argentina and my engine failed in Antofagasta Chile due to the infamous exhaust valve rocker. I had parts to fix it. The bike had 10,000 miles on it. I sold it for the Husqvarna 701 with the new engine, no problems now. Been looking at the new 890. (I also have a BMW 1200GS).

      I had a Husky 701 that I put about 10,000 miles on. I did the El Camino Del Diablo on it, in one evening, quite quickly. The Mojave Trail, again, one afternoon, quite quickly. The bike was amazing but I got rid of it due to destroying tires on highway portions (I'd do loops back to my truck, big loops). Mine was stupid reliable, buuuuuuuuuut it seemed to burn ever so slightly some oil, it was also one of the reasons I got rid of it. Turned out when I traded it in, the oil loss was due to the main sprocket gasket being the guilty party, which was probably due to me having the chain overly tight in the whoops. I got rid of the stock gas cap as well, for that metal one, had the key break off in the factory one, thankfully that happened only a few miles from home, but right after one of my epic rides, eek.
      My buddy has a 690 that has the older engine, and he was amazed at hte difference between our bikes. I could ride for hours on the highway, I went through tires though. TKC's, two pairs, and my favorite tire on that bike for everything was oddly enough Heidenau K60's, 2 fronts and 3 rears. I got rid of it for a Husky 250TEi but I just sold that, I ride road now on a Multistrada 950s but I am thinking of getting a KTM 1290 now for some really long dirt trips.

    My 2018 SAR has now, just after warranty expired - simply ceased to start and throws MTC and ABS failure. KTM workshop are scratching their heads and we’ve installed new OEM Yuasa YTZ14S and Lithium battery without success. Bike has done 47 000km and very moderately ridden and all KTM scheduled services have been taken. I’m seriously considering migrating to a Yamaha T7 or Honda Transalp to regain daily reliability. The 1290 SAR is an absolutely lovely bike to ride, but the electronics are NOT reliable and of serious concern. Luckily my dead electronics happened at home and near KTM workshop. I can not fathom how KTM could botch build quality like this. After barely 5 years of moderate usage it refuses to start. Just ordered new stator and crankshaft position sensor to see if that can wake it up again. Had I been on a long trip out in the boonies this would have meant salvage truck and end of trip.

    I had a KTM 990 adventure up till recently and I absolutely loved it, although it was not good at slow speed is as it was very jerky. I was let down twice in the middle of nowhere with it, but that was because the ready rectifier failed. I bought an aftermarket ready rectifier and the bike was reliable after that. I am satisfied enough To buy another KTM adventure in terms of reliability, and once you get to know the bikes weaknesses you can adapt. I would be more nervous for a BMW

    Aside from taking bike reliability into consideration, another very important factor to take into consideration is the factory warranty and after-sale customer service. KTM is infamous for their ridiculous "Engine and Frame only Warranty," and their much to be desired after-sale customer care or lack thereof. For those 2 reasons alone you won't ever see me shed my hard-earned dollars on an over-priced, pretentious KTM bike, or any other European bike for that matter. KTM (and other European bikes) remind me of Land Rover. They make some of the most beautiful and best performing vehicles out in the market, and yet simultaneously about the most unreliable your upper-class money can buy. Believe me, I owned a few and I KNOW! The last thing you want on a go-around-the-world ADV bike is to get stranded in the middle of nowhere in some 3rd world country out in deep wilderness due to shoddy craftsmanship. Stick to Japanese bikes all the way. It's your best guarantee to be spared the misery of such and unfortunate experience.

    The power to reliability ratio is everything.
    A 160 hp KTM is not going to do big mileage.
    My Honda Varadero has 130,000 kms on it with minimal problems. The re-tuned engine (90 odd hp) from the VTR Firestorm is hardly ever revved above 4,000 rpm. There is no power in the upper levels of the rpm range and therefore no reason to go up there. It's the same for the Suzuki V Strom, they live in the lower rev ranges. The Varadero and V Strom's unstressed engines will basically trundle forever. They won't raise your pulse or rip your arms out of your sockets, but they will run for half a million kms and have long-range capability.
    I guess it's a matter of application, power v reliability, that each buyer needs to weigh up.
    I mean, if you buy a highly-strung 160 hp bike and redline it at every opportunity, can you really complain when it's shot at 30,000 kms?

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  2 года назад

      100% That's why I prefer under-powered bikes and cars over highly strung engines (e.g. Toyota Land Cruiser 1HZ is slow as a donkey, but hard to kill). Same with the old Honda XRV750 AT. Different strokes I guess. But 100% true. I just happen to favor reliability (read 'boring') over power. Cheers

Coming from a 2018 Harley 114 that died twice.....I think with the new models the electronics are the Achillies heal. The consumer report is reporting all of each brands street legal models right? Consider how the average ktm Street legal bike gets used compared to the average Honda... Honda has a lot of bikes that aren't even off road worthy at all. KTM sees a lot more abuse. However, I still would trust a yamaha more. It's been tried abs tested abs the fill verdict is already out.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  2 года назад +1

      That's a good point. KTM's tend to be ridden harder on average. I can't prove it, but I still have this perception that a well maintained KTM will cost more to keep up than a Honda. And that an abused Honda will last longer than an abused KTM. I would be happy if I am wrong! :)

    I have had 7 KTM’s in the last 20yrs. I have averaged 50k-60k per bike, I have ever only had one problem and that was a 2016 690r that was consuming too much oil from new, KTM replaced top end and barrel under warranty, no problem. Sure they have their nuances, quirky, if you like, I personally believe KTM cannot make comfortable seats, adequate wind protection, working fuel gauges or headlights that let you see in the dark, some of the issues are very annoying but that’s what you get if you want a motorcycle with character of which they have bucket loads. None of mine have broken down on the trail and we have tough conditions here in Australia. I have found however that there are riders out there that love to tinker and modify and redesign by adding parts that haven’t failed but because they read it on the internet, just read ADV rider, it’s hilarious. I’m sure aftermarket parts manufacturers are the original instigators. I have found KTMs to be no more unreliable than any other mechanised machinery across different genres. And I would like to add I am not a KTM fanboy, I ride KTM’s, I am NOT a KTM RIDER.

    Just wondering, if the bikes that are giving problems are used everyday. My next door neighbour (Beard, tattoos, wallet on a chain, but a really nice guy) rides his Harley everyday. Despite Harley's rep for unreliability, his never stops. Maybe KTM's need to be worked hard to keep them on the straight and narrow. Just a point of view, other opinions are available😃.
