On the 16th of novemver 1949 138 students took over the Gravestone castle for days while throwing fruit and vegetables at the police, all because the price of beer had risen from 3 Frank to 4 Frank. True legends

Being born and raised in Ghent but now living in the nowhere in France since twenty odd years my heart is bleeding seeing my lovely city through your lens. There is truly no place on this earth to compare with all the beauty and unique splendour Ghent kept for thousand of years. Above all it's not just an open air museum but a living city where it is pleasant and peaceful to live. A modern city reborn in the 1990's with respect for a cultural deep rooted Flemish background, dynamic, friendly and greener by the day banning traffic out of the centre. It has become the n° 1 tourist city in Europe - you can see why ! Thanks for sharing this jewel.

      Hi from Belgium 🤗
There are other stories to tell about Gent ..... like realy shitty social houses , homeless people, corruption.....
yes, there is the beautiful preserved centre but also a lot of not so beautiful parts ..... just putting everything in perspective . Gent now is a city for tourist( rich tourists) but certainly no longer the city for the people who actually lived there ...

@@ilselauwers6009 i live in Belgium too and i understand you want to counter the idyllic image of Ghent but now you are tilting the swing to the other extreme. Ghent is touristic but not like Bruges which is a museum. Ghent stil is a lively vibrant city with students and working people and a rich cultural scène for everyone. You can visit Ghent cheaply if you want. Also outside the center there is a lot of attention for cyclists and everywhere there are green parks for families and children. And it’s true, there is still a lack for affordable housing but i think it’s much worse in most comparable cities.

Very famous for the narrow cobble stone roads packed with some of the best restaurants in town. Within immediate proximity of your tour (minutes walking), you also forgot the other medieval castle 'Het Duivelsteen', and the medieval city entrance gate with double towers calles 'Het Rabot'. Gent is a beautiful city. It has a great vibe with all the students. Together with Antwerpen my favorite Belgian city.
Not all that is looks as if it medieval is in fact so though. In the 19th century many European cities made some medieval enhancements, especially in Belgium. Real medieval architecture was much more austere.

Ghent is well known for its large public squares and marketplaces, chief among which is the Vrijdagmarkt (“Friday Market”), the centre of the life of the medieval city. Of Ghent's many famous medieval monasteries, the most notable are the ruined 7th-century abbey of St.

What an absolutely stunning city! History buffs are drawing attention to this type of architecture located in cities all over our world, on every continent. The stepped, triangular shaped roofs seem to be unique to Ghent, though. It seems there was a cohesive civilization before us. I think that 'torture' equipment was placed in the castle as a draw, lol! Nice to see many people without masks, especially the children. Thanx for sharing, LTE!

    • @conan2735
      @conan2735 3 года назад +1

The stepped triangular roofs are actually common throughout the low countries, its not only a Ghentish/Belgian thing. Its a dutch culture style. Ghent was lucky to be spared from bombardment in the 2 world wars the Netherlands however was bombed just because.

    • @tbucknor

When I saw your comments and video ,it reminded me of The Treaty of Ghent which was where the war of 1812
treaty between Britain and the U.S. was signed.
And so the Count was his magnificent Fortress and power departed, and today it's a tourist attraction.
I guess that is better than "Ozymandias KIng of KIngs", who declared ,"Look on my works ye mighty and despair".
And whose statue decayed into nothing.
Ghent a powerful Medieval city ruled by a powerful church , a church that offered hope for eternal life to the peasants whose live lives were short an difficult.
But, you have to ask, who paid for the construction of all those magnificent buildings?
Of course if it weren't for the Church so much fabulous architecture and Art wouldn't have existed....... A strange dichotomy The Church and the peasants.
    Cheers,
    Rik

4 10 21 Hey Frederick, I went & did some reading on Gent/Ghent too. It's a fascinating history. The story about the hiden church triptychs (during WWII) was interesting. As was the signing of the peace treaty in 1812. Stay safe, keep calm, & be well. v

The source of wealth in Medieval Ghent and Flanders in general was trade, which in its turn made the church rich.
