  • Prior to Constantine’s reign, Scotland had been dominated by the Viking Kings of the Irish Sea known to history and Ui Imair who were the grandsons of Ivar the Boneless. During his reign Constantine himself would face Viking raids from the north and west as well as an expanding Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Wessex while trying to establish the Kingdom of Alba in its definitive Gaelicised form. Constantine was an early King of Scotland known in the 10th century by the Gaelic name Alba. Constantine’s Grandfather Kenneth is traditionally considered the founder of Scotland, which was then known as Alba although he bore the title King of Picts. This change of title from King of the Picts to the King of Alba is part significant as during this period Scotland slowly become the Kingdom we see today.

    A word of advice from a king to a future king. Trust no one who advises you

    I liked the actor who played the role in the Last Kingdom. I was hoping he would have a bigger role in the movie. I really like these historical bios. Well done.

    Thank you, Ollie, for introducing me to Constantine. I had never delved into Scottish history that far back.

      As a Scot I've learned that Scottish history is brutal and bloody, even more so than England, France etc. I remember telling my not very impartial friend this and he refused to believe it. I told him to educate himself on Scottish history because he knows fuck all about it. He's in the everything is Englands fault brigade and convinced himself I'm only a staunch unionist because I'm 22 years British Army 😂 you can't make a stupid person smart. Not because of his political opinions but he knows nothing about the history, or anything really about the country he wants to "save"

    I'll say this, at least The Last Kingdom portrayed him as a badass. I like how he fought on the front lines in his own battles and was an ambivalent character despite being on the enemy side.

    Nice. I have a direct line of ancestry to Constantine II thru Malcomb I, Malcomb II, Malcomb III, Henry III, also David I, & Robert II with connecting lines from both of my parents to kings of Wales and Ireland. Small world isn't it.

      No, simple maths, population considerably smaller and your ancestors over 50 generations will be a really big number. I am probably related. I do have Stuart name so can trace back To Robert the Bruce and therefore all the way down to current Royal family

    A really interesting period and ruler, love the interpretations that mention how Constantine marcha once again against the English in his old age asking Malcolm for one last raid.
    Shame the Last Kingdom didn't make a better use of this phenomenal man, a king of old with all that entails.

    Constantine & his Allies may have lost more men than Athelstan at Brunanburh, but did he in fact win his war? De facto independence of the Kingdom of Alba was achieved, after all.

    • @historyprofiles
      @historyprofiles  Год назад +3

      Technically although he lost the battle I guess he won his own personal war securing Scottish independence as after this Scotland was no longer a vassal of aethelstan or subsequent kings of the Wessex line

    The novels are better. (Duh)
    But TLK was a good adaptation.
    Can't wait till "Seven Kings Must Die"

    Ollie you should get into Maori History they have a lot of similarities to the Vikings but there are some pretty brutal and interesting Chiefs such as Te Rauparaha who was a brutal cannibal but most Māoris were cannibals back then but he was also the chief who made the Haka that is used by the New Zealand rugby team but not many people no about its origins and the fact that the man who made it wiped out most of the Māoris on the South Island.

    That king you’re talking about in this video is actually one of my relatives by blood. I know it sounds crazy as a random person says it’s their relative, but I have proof.

    The Gaelic name for Scotland is “Alba” but you pronounce it as if it was in your native English. The correct pronunciation is “AL A PA” Eric C
