You can order precision ground O1 tool steel from Enco. You can also mail order steel form the New Jersey Steel Baron. I do not know what might be local for you.
The guide is pretty smple, the upright part is 1/2 all thread, the horizontal part is coupler nut with a long bolt running through it. There is a small button on the end that works as a rest. The more I grind, the less I end up using the guide. I am nearly freehand grinding everything now days.
back again to have a look at this vid, have you ever thought about custom knife making? Your ideally set up for it! Exactly the same set-up as I use for blades...
I needed 1/4 inch because of the width of the blade. The angle needs to about 16 degrees. I would suggest getting and using a razor before starting to make razors from scratch. That way you will have a base line to start from
First off great videos, I've been making knives for a while now and would like to make a straight razor, your videos are very clear as to the process. Why 1/4"? I love both grinding set-ups. What would be your suggestions as to going about making a razor?
any chance of a quick video of that jig you have for your grinder? I've been trying to figure out how to make a setup like that for hallow grinding as well
Nice video, great to see a straight on the production line.Reminds me of those early Wade and Butcher models. Is that a trizact belt your using for final grinding/polishing?
The steel I used was O1 tool steel. The O stands for oil, it made to be quenched in oil. You will need to get an oven or forge that will get to about 1500 degress to do the heattreat on high carbon steel. You can temper your blades in the 350-400 degrees range in a toaster oven. I scribed the center line with a pair of dail calipers. The jig/rest I was using with the grinder is a home made one.
Hey thanks for the answer! What do you think to the trizact belts compaired to zirconia or ceramic? Would be great to see a vid on the honing process from coming off the grinder to shaving sharp?
@screamingpig1 The trizcat belts leave really uniform scratch marks when making a satin finish, I like them for that. I really like ceramic belts I use them for most of my grinding. I do not really use zirconia belts to often. My honing over view video is basically how I sharpen my razors. Making the initial bevel is where it is at. If you get the bevel right the rest goes quickly.
@lewisrazors Thank you. Can you recommend ay other resources for information making razors (I have lots of knifemaking resources but not many about razors.
those who share their knowledge makes it a better world, thanks
sam terian I agree with you, I have learned a lot from lots of people.

It is called a checkering file. If you search for checkering file you will find them.
A checkering file cuts an evenly spaced series of grooves.
Awesome, please do more vids. I am just getting into knife/razor making and this is super helpful. What thickness is that stock?
I have made a few knives for myself. Making razors is what I really enjoy doing,

I like your grinding fixture. Thank you for sharing your process!
Steve Anderson It is a simple rest, but it works good for me. You are welcome.

Thanks for the comment I think Wade & Butchers have some of the nicest lines. Yes that is a trizact belt that I am using.

very nice.how do you sharpen it?
@Rotwang72 thanks for the encouragement, I was using 1/4 stock in the video
You make it look so dang easy! Awesome video
The prices varies a lot. I sell my razors through Straight Razor Designs. My razors are in the Custom section.
I have not tried making a razor on a 4 x 36 sander, I am not sure how to modify one to make it work.
@xxmtgxx The razor was a about 15/16 wide when it was finished.
@royl1one I usually leave my edge somewhere in the range form .040 - ,060.
How do you keep the transition line from the grind to the tang so sharp and crisp?
new, sharp belts, good corner on contact wheel, and lots of stopping and looking
@Rotwang72 Straight Razor Place forum has a small but dedicated group of razor makers.
how thick is your steel when your start ? 0.187 ? 0.250 ?
I think it was .250
Sure is a pretty piece of work.
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.
Thanks for sharing,May I ask what that liquid? After heating.
***** It is oil
lewisrazors oil。 thanks。
during tempering what do you use to quench your knives?
+liam graham I use a purpose made quench oil. I have a fast and medium quench oil. Canola will work also.
OK thank you👍
how much is the price ?? thank you
@xxmtgxx Yes, I used an 8 wheel in this video. I used 1/4 stock.
Awesome job!!
@717sport I have a video of my honing on my channel. gssixgun has some great more in depth information on honing razors on his channel
