The Romans wanted the gold from the top of the temple so it's unlikely that it was burned intentionally. As it happened, the gold melted and ran down between the stone walls. The Romans had to tear down every stone to retrieve the gold. Stones that weight several tons each. Just as Jesus prophesied, not one stone was left standing upon another.

After all, by the time he had left for Rome during the Year of the Four Emperors he had successfully conquered Galilee. I think the case for the temple mount actually being Fortress Antonia is very convincing the hill is litteraly shaped like a roman castrum exacty,the temple probably was elsewhere below/beside the Fort Antonia. I understand it was a medieval tradition to place it on the mount.

The Romans wanted the gold from the top of the temple so it's unlikely that it was burned intentionally. As it happened, the gold melted and ran down between the stone walls. The Romans had to tear down every stone to retrieve the gold. Stones that weight several tons each. Just as Jesus prophesied, not one stone was left standing upon another.

After all, by the time he had left for Rome during the Year of the Four Emperors he had successfully conquered Galilee. He was also in the process of subduing Judea before he left Titus in charge of the siege of Jerusalem. It was a long campaign after all and presumably, if he hadn't made his attempt to become emperor, he would have been the one to finish the campaign, and not Titus.

John alludes to the coming destruction, which all seems to point to Jerusalem, which means before the destruction of the temple.
