My elevator pitch for both 2063 and Afterglow has always been as such: It's the "John Carpenter's : Mad Max" movie that we never got. Especially when it comes to the A.I of the story. Let's just say that Athena isn't the *real* threat when it comes to the A.I of the story.
I kept thinking of John Carpenter too when playing Ashes 2063 because of the music, primarily (some riffs are directly lifted from his movie scores lol) and some of the visuals are very "Escape from New-York"-ish.
It's partly true that we're in a new dark age of PC gaming. But it really only seems to apply to AAA titles. The indie devs and small operation modding industry has never been better.
In a way, videogames are super cheap and easy to make nowadays. The path from idea to functional game is much shorter than it was in 1995. But the gains in productivity are used to add fidelity to the point where making a game costs more than it did before. And so year by year budgets grow and grow. I almost wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to make all games in a minimum viable artstyle and then upgrade that once you have a good grasp on the mechanics and an idea of how much the market likes it. For example, if someone now showed me a kickstarter for funding an Ashes remake in Unreal Engine with better visuals, I would definitely pitch in, or if the two creators could collaborate with an established studio (like Nightdive) for the same, I would maybe even pre-order. Come to think of it, Portal happened in a similar way - a rough student project that got picked up by Valve and polished to AAA standards.
@@pleaserespond3984 I disagree to a point. But you're onto something I've been thinking about too lately. I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to sacrifice graphics. However, i'm thinking that it might be a good idea to make smaller games with good graphical fidelity that are made to show off a proof of concept. Something gamers can go through in 3-5 hours tops, but which are intended to be followed up by a bigger and longer sequel, if the game gathers enough of an audience. I'm not thinking about a "Demo" here since a Demo is usually just a disjointed snippet from a full game. I'm talking about a full but short game with a purposefully tight scope and narrative that shows off the game mechanics and features you want players to experience, but which can still be put together by a relatively small studio of developers. Think of it as the equivalent to a short film from the world of cinema.
@@sevenproxies4255 Shareware was similar to that, it's how I discovered Duke3d in the 90's. Free first episode with information on the disc that tells you how to order the game directly from the publisher through mail.
I just want to say ever since I watched your video on Baroque. I have been obsessed with older games, Roms, and game preservation. You have helped me find so many amazing games I would have never known about. So truly, thank you!
I can't think of a better example of why the game industry as a whole needs to stop endlessly seeking more visual fidelity and focus on art, sound, and mechanical design. This is what happens when experts in a game engine and its applicable genres focus on the bones and flesh of their game, instead of endlessly crafting the skin.
What still amazes me to this day that it's free! I mean... People would pay for such a great total conversion mod. Thanks for reviewing it. Ashes 2063, and Afterglow, deserves more recognition.
Not only is it free, but the developers also refuse money for it saying it's not ready yet. Instead, they suggest you buy the pretty banging soundtrack to support the artist.
This is the most creative game I’ve ever seen in a Doom mod. This definitely feels a lot like STALKER here. It’s incredible how these fans work so hard to make these mods from old game’s engine, and create something fun and original.
Asches 2063 is the greatest. But some other also deserve recognition such as blade of agony, total chaos, alien eradication and project brutality with brutal doom's Eday map set.
Amazing work! Thank you, to you and everyone on the team. Your hard work is much appreciated by all of us. Always looking forward to what you guys might do in the future. Because we will all be happy to play them.
I haven't even gotten around to playing Afterglow yet, but have been so thoroughly blown away by the perfection of the stand alone Ashes 2063 release that I am kinda saving it to play later, because phenomenal games are hard to come by. There is not at all enough attention being brought to this masterpiece of a game. It just oozes passion and perfection in every pixel and sound byte. This is the first time I feel the game has been described in a way that does it justice! I skipped around this video to avoid hearing too much about Afterglow, but I think I can't hold myself back any longer. I need to play it, like now. Though, I have to say that It's been really fun going through 2063 in higher difficulties. The game is just so fun and rewarding to master. There isn't a single segment of the game that I had to replay that I became irritated with - it's just so much fun to challenge yourself in this game.
Thanks a ton for dropping a comment and massive kudos! (Also the motorcycle driving is just so much fun, I have a ton of footage so it was easy to pick the smoothest rides ^^)
I honestly wish they could put this up on steam, just so I could buy it. I haven't played it yet and I feel like throwing some money at these devs. This amount of effort and care deserves a worthy compensation.
Not only is the speech well-captioned, but I _love_ the parenthesized audio descriptions. Always a treat when closed captions have that sprinkle of bonus flavour~
I picked this up recently after seeing someone posting about it on a gaming group on Facebook a few months back. I regret waiting so long to get round to playing it. I think Ashes as a whole, 2063, Dead Man Walking and Afterglow, because you can pretty much play them back to back like a single game, is not only the best thing ever made in the Doom engine, it is one of the best shooters / immersive sims of all time.
As someone who's been telling every single gaming-related friend to try ashes, I'm so so *so* glad to see a bigger youtuber talk about it in detail - let alone one I adore so much such as yourself! Very pleasant surprise, and verymuch looking forward to watching this!
thanks for always putting a spotlight on awesome games I've never heard of, thanks to you I've been introduced to Koudelka, Hellnight, and Eternal Darkness, (as well as a lot of other that I intend to try when I'm less broke) anyway I definitely plan on checking this game out soon
Currently playing through this game for 3rd time and still not bored. One of the best games ever and boy the aphmosphere when you are in dar with low ammo and soundtrack and ambient sounds haunts you at same time. This game goes to eleven.
I can still remember the day this project was announced back at the Zdoom forums almost ten years ago, it was planned as a total conversion for the original doom replacing all 4 episodes, with few screenshots of the very simple looking maps and borrowed weapon sprites that were still new at the time made by other members of the community, it´s impressive to see how far the creator has come now that it´s completed, and to think I almost gave this project a pass because I thought that it would never be released like a whole plethora of other projects that got lost on limbo...
Happy to see more and more people on RUclips talking about Ashes. It really deserves waaay more attention than it has right now. These games were till now so overlooked imo because how the creators undersell their creation. They created out of hobby and passion something so unique and enjoyable, but in our consumer oriented world people think whats free is not worth to look at. Playing this game was like finding treasure in some lost city underground or something. You play the game and at certain points you think to yourself: "well, it cant get better than this, and it has to be over soon as it is just some mod made by some people as a hobby" And it some how getting even more good, even more deep and complex to the point you dont believe that this game exists. It really feels like this shouldnt be where it is, it should be mentioned in some game of the year list or something. You play the game and you actually feel bad about not caring about it till now, because its so much more than another stupid doom mod. So much more than where most people categorize this game. It is actually funny this video came out right now, as i played the games like 4 days ago through and i was shocked that no big youtuber covered it yet. It feels like my prayers have been heard lol.
I enjoyed Ashes 2063 when I played it in 2018 but when I finally played Afterglow a few months ago it blew me away. I'm really excited for the teased third installment/addon
This game is easily one of the best of all time for me and i have played it through 3 times and still not bored with it. One fact just never stops for kicking straight to the nuts and it is this. When heart meets talent, it ALWAYS wins big game corporations and endless budgets. ALWAYS.I cant remember any game from any big game company from past 15 years which can compete with this game. Cant wait when we get episode 3.
Played through it twice just to experience everything, and it is without a doubt one of the most well put-together labors of love I've ever experienced. The only downside is I can't pay him and his team for all their hard work.
Ashes 2063 is truly 10/10 game. Great story, great atmosphere, awesome OST, gameplay is top notch and developers squeezed absolute maximum from the engine. I should give it another run. I remember this one dialog with scavver in one of the hub-towns of ep2, after you carve your way through armies of raiders and hordes of mutants in the ep1. I'm going to paraphrase but it went something like: *scavenger looks at you, head to toe* player: "Is something wrong:" scavver: "Not really. I heard about some lonely scav that butchered army of raiders and horde of mutants back *_in location_* ? Do you happen to know him?" player: "Huh? That's sounds crazy." scavver: "Yeah, I think too. It's impossible for one man." Also give try to Hedon if you didn't. Behind the cheesiness and smut of extrathicc muscle mommy characters is also great GZDoom game with great story, atmosphere, OST and gameplay.
First level of Ashes 2063 goes so hard. It's a joy to play, and if you're not teabagging corpses to the beat you're doing it wrong. And it doesn't stop there.
I’m glad more people are talking about (imo) one of if not the best fan made mods I’ve ever seen. Better than most AAA games today both gameplay and story wise.
Better than any AAA game released this year. Ashes 2063 is a damn masterpiece IMO. I'd also recommend Batandy's Golden Souls series of Doom mods for a very different GZDoom experience.
This modpack was so good that when Ep2 was released I was actively trying to find out how to support them. Much to my dismay they didn't want any sort of monetary funding, I would gladly pay for something like this. I hope there will be more Ashes in the future.
*minor spoilers* Somewhere I read that the main writer for this series, The Dutch Ghost, wasn't entirely satisfied with how the story came out, nor is he sure that when it gets revealed that it will live up to the hype/build up. I just wanted to say; if there is any chance of him reading this, that him and Vostyok wrote one of the most interesting sci-fi settings I have ever come across, whether in books, games, movies or any other media. The twist that we're not dealing with a "regular" post-nuclear war setting, and the supernatural/extraterrestrial implications are *super* interesting. I also don't know if they should reveal everything, at least not explicitly. Something adds to it when all we get are subtle hints, it conjures so many interesting fan theories. Its like if Stanley Kubrick had revealed exactly what had happened in his version of The Shining, people likely wouldn't be talking about and theorizing about it to this day... If he released a series of books based on this franchise, I'd gobble that stuff up like a pig gobbles oatmeal.
💯% agreed. Getting only crumbs of the state of the world, dictated by Scav's relatively minor-impact deeds and explorations, is what leaves us hungry for so much more of the setting. As a point of narrative, especially for a post-apoc setting where the surviving humans are just as confused as the fans of the work, if you can leave something vague and open to interpretation without creating plot holes, it's not a bad idea to do so. Another good example of this very concept is Metro. The fascination comes from us having enough knowledge to get a bit of footing, but still not knowing WTF is the bigger picture all about. And I don't doubt Dutch will see this. He patrols Ashes content on RUclips often.
Ok paused halfway to not learn anymore until I’ve played a bunch myself, trying out immediately, thank you Ragnarox! So glad I check your channel for anything I mighta missed, you make incredible content!!!
I completed both Ashes 2063 and Afterglow blind (didn't even watch the final trailer - and I'm glad I did !). I can finally watch this to mitigate the post game blues.
The visual style of this one was always impeccable, it was a major inspiration in my personal projects and its not easy to achieve, especially with the technology and the map builder they're working with. Theres just something special about it
It feels rusted. Dilapidated. Things are past their prime and only hint at their old glory and beauty. I think STALKER 2 will manage that as well with much higher graphics but the pixelated old school visuals portrayed decaying past apocalypse just so well.
Your essays are always inspiring and educational. Game have come a lo g way since Super Mario Bros 2 and Street Fighter 2, the first games I fell in love with, and your videos make me remember how loving games feels like.
Now this is a DOOM mod that really deserves attention, and it doesn't have a deep and complex ARG lore to get the attention from youtubers that never played DOOM!
Another great and well crafted video. It's crazy to think we have had this engine since 97/99 and it's still relevant. Highlighting this kind of ñrojects in detail elevates the community even more.
It's quite honestly one of the best FPS I've played in a long while and it's the best post-apocalyptic FPS I've ever played. STALKER, Fallout 3, NV, 4, Metro series and Rage they all suck compared to Ashes. I've always wanted a balanced FPS that gives me adventure and action that's FUN. I'm not biased. I've just played it because of praise from Doom 2 mod enthusiasts and thought about giving it a shot. Had no expectations and was amazed. This mod managed to have a more compelling story and better gameplay compared to more than 50% of action games out there.
@@DinnerForkTongue When I say they suck I don't mean that they are worthless games or anything. I just found myself going back to those games multiple times only to find either lackluster gunplay (STALKER), either the games are too open and filled with repetititve content like FO3, or too linear like Metro. Rage itself has great gunplay and I enjoyed the first 2 hubs of the game world, but the amount of invisible walls and sudden end to the game to leave a huge whole and a lack of satisfaction. And above all, they're filled with technical issues. Generally I found them less enjoyable. With Ashes it was smooth sailing from the beginning. And I immediately wanted to start a new session on higher difficulties. I haven't had this much fun with a game since the original Max Payne.
mad respects I didnt know people make games from doom to this day. tnk you man as always for the info. and michael too his writhing is still easy to recognize with his signature style.
10:30 Afterglows world change is basically like hexen or strife. Most open world games sucks hard because of their non-existent level design. Ashes afterglow does things the strife way, reserving the excellent design of levels while connecting them in ways that flow into each other.
@@DinnerForkTongue respectable. The plant area hit my frame rate pretty hard as well. Getting that visual in the Doom engine is actual witchcraft tho lol

The fact that while new games are coming out everyday and devs with just insane dedication and gumption just make stuff you wouldn't think possible in engines you'd think were outdated like the doom engine...even if it is running in the GZ Doom source port. For sure trying this out, another great video as always Ragnar and Mike.
I love that this game is getting a highly viewed video to showcase it. I discovered it a week or two ago and it is seriously impressive. It's like the game I've always wanted to play.
The problem is that gaming journalism is now completely based around AAA gaming and a large majority of people who play video games don't know anything beyond that and what add the see the most. All the game journalists magazine and web sites from the 90's and 00's got bought up by big companies that want them to push AAA games first and foremost.
There was one moment in Ashes Afterglow that actually managed to freak me out, after going through a series of blast doors that need you to pull a lever to open for each you get into a workshop area with a key and goodies, but as I turned around I began hearing the blast doors opening, I looked at the monster-count, there were zero monsters left. I immediately bunkered down, using the pipe bombs to plant explosive traps at the final blast door and then sat there ready to fire at whatever was opening the doors, but as the final door opened, there was just nothing, as if the doors had opened on their own. Yeah...that kinda put me on edge.
The impact of Transtemporal Harbinger inhabiting a flesh automaton John Carmack to make a game engine that forever changed gaming cannot be understated. There's still games made on offsprings of that engine 30 years later. I think I saw Splattercat touch on this game below and it's crazy to think this is still Doom at the core.
People out there making such high quality and genuinely good games with such an old engine, while AAA struggles to put out something worth playing with modern tech is very telling.
Was a reveiw of "my house.wad" ever planned? Even after reaching the airport it's hard to tell if i have seen everything, given you get no map and no secrets (aside from one) are told to you. But it sure does push the engine beyond its limits given you can even see multiple floors at the same time and makes use of "mirror space" (you know "rooms that do not exist" which i thought only duke nukem could do) allowing you to see monsters wandering on multiple floor through the windows near the well and also inside given you can see downstairs. Whoever made it played some truly amazing feats of prestidigitation to pull this off. The fact it also puts a fake doom 2 level (i only noticed because i was too tall) which you can play in the mirror world too with everything reversed is pure genius. But then again it's 60+ mb of stuff. So, hats off. It even has multiple endings depending on what you do and at which point of the stuff to unlock. It's like a mega puzzle made of minipuzzles that you "have" to "solve" while killing stuff.
This standalone IS THEEEEE most Amazing game I have ever played. EVER. Its better than any of the Metro games - combined. Easily. (of course im not talking about graphics. Its solid long hours of adventures and suspense.
Ashes 1&2 and Hedon 1&2 was my favorite games i played last year, and that's without any caviats. They're not Doom-mods they're just games on GZDoom engine. Ashes is a masterclass in atmosphere but Hedon is more about level/puzzle design. Espesically episode 2 is quite a big and complex fantasy adventure. Also big orc titties. Oh and waiting patiently for Golden Souls 3. Such a bizzare and expansive series.
Ashes 1 and 2 some of the best Doom tc games I've ever played, the maps and music are incredible. I took the Maps from Afterglow, added Xim's Doom3 Textures (a conflict adds darkness and fog everywhere), a flashlight mod, and Project A.L.A.L.N. (Doom survival horror mod) and accidentally turned it into the most intense, atmospheric Doom horror experience I've ever played. L.I.T. Doom works really well with Ashes maps as well, turns it into a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. like experience.
Always loved Stronghold: On The Edge Of Chaos, if we're talking Doom 2 total conversions. TL:DR, what if Doom 2 was a mission based tower defence affair. Btw, I *have* to shout out MR ICARUS LIVES - a gentleman and a scholar, who had been making a thorough job of covering Doom WADs for years, only slowing down since he got kids. Saying this, cause youtube is kinda screwing him over for the past 3 years.
31:49 I honestly had this idea back in the day when the PlayStation 1 CDs were a big thing in PlayStation 2 DVDs were just becoming normal. That if we were to make a game with the graphics of the super Nintendo and with a DVD we could have seven games worth of a single game on a single desk. Meaning when Final fantasy first came out it was in four discs because one of those discs was just the map. When the PS2 came around if we were to do the same but with a step below the PS1s capability I feel like we could have gotten a game three times the length that we were used to with a very open and big world to play in all in 16 bit. My little brain we just think of having a game such as Chrono trigger but when you go to the world map it's an actual world map. Because those cartridges held megabytes at best. And with the PS2 DVDs holding gigs, the expansion a super Nintendo styled game would have would have been massive. Even with cutscenes and voice dialogue in high fidelity 16-bit graphics.
I really hope the upcoming game Exekiller will be like this. I'm sure other people who enjoy this channel will have stumbled across teasers of that game too. And if you haven't? Then you're in for a treat.
I mean, yes, Bethesda continues to use Gamebryo... but the elephant in the room in that comparison is that everyone who's played any games developed with it have always complained that these titles seem to be held together by duct tape. Doom runs on everything. Gamebryo only just technically runs on Windows and major consoles.
Indeed. It almost comes over as praise that Bethesda is still using the Gamebryo engine and still getting performance out if it, but the games they have been producing so often suffer from various bugs. From ingame content not working right to the games having a tendency to crash because of them. Even when Bethesda releases patches that fix some problems, the patches frequently cause new ones. And the additional code that has been glued on top with each new game has not helped either. Truth is that Bethesda should have moved on to a much better and stable engine ages ago that can easily handle the tasks they expect the Frankenstein Gamebryo engine to handle. Either develop one themselves, maybe have Id make one, or buy one. I can be wrong but I think one of the reason Bethesda won't is because it would require a lot of their team have to be retrained to use any new engine.
I love everything about this. I wish I could find like minded people who would love to make an RPG in that vein (gfx, ost and atmosphere and all that).
Just booted up Episode 1 for the first time - if the main menu music's anything to go by, it's gonna be a helluva good time. Thanks for the recommendation!

I played the first two releases during the pandemic. Outstanding game that outclasses most recent AAA efforts…and it’s made in the DOOM engine.
Yeah, playing this is like being in a John Carpenter movie, and every second is awesome!
The musics clearly have that vibe.
What still amazes me to this day that it's free! I mean... People would pay for such a great total conversion mod.
Thanks for reviewing it. Ashes 2063, and Afterglow, deserves more recognition.
I would pay for it and even more so for a sequel!

Can we get a hooray for Vostyok, Reformed Joe and their crew? 👏 👏 👏
Much appreciated. I was on the team. I miss the fun we had together but I parted with them for various reasons.
Can only say if you loved 2063 already, Afterglow will completely knock you away
Awesome review. Im particularly impressed by your skills with the motorcycle, although that might be selling it better than it actually is. 😅
Thanks a ton for dropping a comment and massive kudos!

Vostyok is a cool guy. He included a reference to our mod, Fallout: Miami, too.
I love the story for Ashes. The way everything just comes together at the end really makes me want more.
thanks for always putting a spotlight on awesome games I've never heard of, thanks to you I've been introduced to Koudelka, Hellnight, and Eternal Darkness, (as well as a lot of other that I intend to try when I'm less broke) anyway I definitely plan on checking this game out soon
"Just another day in the irradiated, nightmare, wasteland that is Atlanta Georgia"
So it's just Atlanta?
It's just Atlanta, yeah
Ashes 2063 is truly 10/10 game. Great story, great atmosphere, awesome OST, gameplay is top notch and developers squeezed absolute maximum from the engine. I should give it another run.
I remember this one dialog with scavver in one of the hub-towns of ep2, after you carve your way through armies of raiders and hordes of mutants in the ep1.
I'm going to paraphrase but it went something like:
*scavenger looks at you, head to toe*
player: "Is something wrong:"
scavver: "Not really. I heard about some lonely scav that butchered army of raiders and horde of mutants back *_in location_* ? Do you happen to know him?"
player: "Huh? That's sounds crazy."
scavver: "Yeah, I think too. It's impossible for one man."
Also give try to Hedon if you didn't.
*minor spoilers*
Somewhere I read that the main writer for this series, The Dutch Ghost, wasn't entirely satisfied with how the story came out, nor is he sure that when it gets revealed that it will live up to the hype/build up.
Congrats on 9 years!!! Also excellent work on the video both of you. 💜

I completed both Ashes 2063 and Afterglow blind (didn't even watch the final trailer - and I'm glad I did !). I can finally watch this to mitigate the post game blues.
Ashes Afterglow has some of the most 80s post apocalyptic speedrun tech, using a pipe bomb to jump your motorcycle over a gate in the second hub
Used to do that irl but with bikes, ramp, and fireworks lol

Been playing Ashes 2063 and Afterglow since early 2022. I'd argue it is the best doom tc ever. Probably the best doom mod of all time.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they suck. But Ashes really is on its own level.
@@DinnerForkTongue
When I say they suck I don't mean that they are worthless games or anything.

I know exactly what level you are referring to. That one is *_EERIE._* Not quite Anomaly 210, but up in that bracket.
Love the use of NIN Tetsuo The Bullet Man theme for the intro!
I who recomend this one too. In fact, I will just save this video to not forget about this game
Me constantly dying on normal difficulty in the tutorial level: "Yepp, accurate comparison to the first Fallout games."
I like playing this with a weather mod. I set it to change weather patterns every so often. ❤
Played these a while back. Honestly mind blowing. It’s exactly what I want from the genre.

Speaking of total Doom conversions, I think, Divine Frequency should be mentioned.
I definitely agree, it also has very interesting vibe to it. Only it feels kinda unfinished and maybe too overall weird to me a bit
I hope you do Hedon next, because I am overjoyed to know they are cooping on a goblin military sim. Which is amaaaazing as far as pitches goes.
Fun fact: Vostyok, the creator of Ashes, is co-working with the Hedon devs.

I just saw the title and thumbnail and I knew that this is for me. lol
Now I'm gonna watch the video.

My House is My House. Even Romero played it.
But Ashes? That's built different. If a TC out there deserves the limelight, it's Ashes.
12:33 Well, more specifically and relevant to the DOOM engine, Strife style system.
Glad to hear Michael, because he havent streamed in like a year and have no social media presence i got worried
Now I want Ragnar to cover Total Chaos :-)
I never would call Ashes a "mod". It's a full-price game on its own. But for free
Just booted up Episode 1 for the first time - if the main menu music's anything to go by, it's gonna be a helluva good time. Thanks for the recommendation!
Yes. Yes it is. From start to end, whether the moment is cool or scary or thought-provoking, Ashes is _always_ a good time.
I'm glad this mod is getting more recognition! I'm in the middle of a replay of Afterglow, and just realized that you can skip most of the second hub by killing the guards and fighting your way into uptown
You can, if you just don't care. It's an open option.
I think the craziest thing for people to comprehend nowadays is the fact that at one point DOOM was installed on more computers than windows, can you imagine a game released now that ended up being installed on more pcs than windows, its basically unthinkable now
Right? Even Minecraft can't toot that horn.
Man, you do such a good job on your videos, keep it up and thanks
This isn't even a mod. It's a whole new game made by a fanmade engine powering Doom and it is fully free.
Exactly, it's very much its own monster by this point.
17:34 Nope. you don't "pump to chamber a live round" if you load one through the ejection port. That round is already primed to fire.
