    Wow! This was so good to see! I had Mookies and Old German Owls, and they got along so well I was under the impression that pigeons paired off and never squabbled or bossed. They weren't a lot of meat, but they were amazing production birds. Thanks for this info on utility birds going the way of form over function in some cases. Very informative!

    I got mostly wild caught pijums right now, looking at some Great Giant Runts and maybe a couple Red Runts, I would love to try breeding a pigeon/pheasant hybrid or trying to get an all black chicken hen to mate with an all black pij and see if we can get a "black pigeon" sort of hybrid. For now the wild caught guys just need into a flight cage, I'd love to keep adding to that flock for food. Smaller, but tasty all the same. Cool video, I literally started two weeks ago, found this very helpful especially for the feed and feather trimming stuff! Thanks for this!

    • @SixInACastle
      @SixInACastle  5 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure some of those can mate successfully to make a hybrid... but I'm curious to see if you have any success in it! If you want birds to eat, do not get runts. They get their size in feathers and fat, not meat. And they don't breed well. Look for Kings or Texas pioneers. :)

    Greetings,
    I raise several utility breeds of pigeons. Utility Kings, Texan Pioneers, Hoobles, White Carneux and yes my favorite utility French Mondain (old standard!!!) The problem you have with your birds in the video is they are the new standard and breed for show quality not production. The French Mondain (old standard) are marvelous parents with superior production often raising 5 to 6 rounds year, so that's 10 to 12 squeakers per pair. They dress out between 14 to 17 oz. Of all my utility breeds the number one would be utility Kings, followed by the French Mondaines (old standard) and then the hoobles. The old standard are hard to find online but they exist. I was lucky enough to find a breeder on hoobly.com.
    Cheers, Johnathan Wagner

    I keep white king pigeons. I received them in October and they have had two sets of babies. They lay two eggs at a time. In winter it is best to destroy one egg as they will favor one baby and the other may die. I feed pigeon gold mix. Like you I need to get rabbit hutches to do this right. The babies make so much mess that I am wondering how to keep the flies down once it gets hot this summer. I am having reservations about what I am doing yet mine probably breed better than yours.

    • @SixInACastle
      @SixInACastle  6 лет назад

      I've actually moved all of mine into the pair cages now. (Rehomed the babies, but kept my two more mature pairs.) We will see how they do. I have heard that Mondain tend to be very territorial so I suppose that may be why I haven't had more babies out of mine besides the ones by the dominant male. I don't have the space to create a cage that would let them flock together and stay far enough away from each other. I let them choose their own mates, which might not have been the best idea since I have now learned that it does not improve their qualities by letting them pair with same colored birds. I should really have had my black/blue paired with a brown. Lots to learn, as I'm relatively new to the pigeon keeping world. :) Thanks for watching!!

    • @MistressOP
      @MistressOP 6 лет назад

      yup.. i'd cull the problem child and roll the dice. if you have enough breeders. you aren't just breading for size it's a temperament inside your system. we have a large run outdoors they can go in and forage. It's the place we keep trees that are 2 years old in air pots and we also do chics starts in that area as well. stacking those functions. we keep bucks we are testing out to become daddy rabbits. like 4 brothers we have to breed have to be able to live together when they are not breeding. have to be able to live in a tractor system together. even though the cage we keep the 4 bucks is a HUGE tractor with a lot of space. the 4 bucks have to be able to live together and must be watched. we set up a lil webcam in that same area lol. for that reason. stacking those fuctions again. a larger outdoor run is worth it. We have owls so I wasn't sure if you had owls which is why your not letting your pairs fly for a bit.
      dont worry it comes in time. I hope you enjoy the meat and what not. A lot of breeders don't bread the birds for taste they just sell and sell. it's not just about that it's about taste. they are meat birds after all. good luck I hope to see more

    • @SixInACastle
      @SixInACastle  4 года назад

      That could be a very good idea! One thing to consider is that most of a runt's weight comes from fat, skin, and bone. If you are raising your bird to butcher, you may only want to cross them with runts to up their weight a bit, but runts aren't really a great squabbing bird. Only mix them with your kings if it benefits your end goal :)

      @SixInACastle  5 лет назад

      The only way to really know for sure is to wait until they are about 6 months old and start to pair up. Girls will lay eggs around that age and boys will start to sing/dance. Girls can also sing and dance, but the boys usually do it more. Girls also typically do it in response to a Boy's singing. Or you can get a breed that auto-sexes by color like the Texas Pioneer. Hi, It would be great to see an update from your pigeons. In my experience show pigeons are pretty inbred, this is the nr. 1. reason for the lack of reproductivity. I crossed other breeds with kings and this way they could raise 8 youngs per pair annually. If we had not so cold and dark winter, that could be more. If you keep more pairs than just 2, the aggression will be divided between the males. There will be still a dominant male, but he can't chase more males at the same time. Hubbels and mittelhausers are selected to be peacful, I guess they may inherit it in crossing. I don't know if kimonda is an official breed, that is also selected to be peaceful. We feed them with wheat and maize, and as a protein source chicken feed or sunflower.

    I would recommend crossing them with a more...virile utility breed.....

      Sorry, I was away from youtube for a bit and that's exactly what I've done now :) I sold all but one of my mondains and have put her with a boy who is part King and part Mondain. They just had their first set of babies! I'll show you soon.

      I don't sell pigeons yet, but I will in the future. :) Are you in the USA? Your pigeons sound really good! Very good breeders. Are they perhaps Red or White French Carneau?

      I ended up mixing my French Mondain into a few other breeds and creating my own monster. Still working out the ultimate form and auto-sex, but it breeds much better and hasn't lost the size. I hope to show them off in a future video :)
