This stance is quite often used with bigger cine rigs in combat/fight scenes, especially in those hollywood studio shoot where the camera is on a floating rig from the ceilfing, or outdoors with easyrig. It is called (at least here in Finland) as "Moottorisaha ote" which is translated to "Chain Saw config/stance/mode".
I'd rock that setup with a top handle and a shoulder mount and a strap on the camera grip for a few different contact points. This is an awesome build!
I’ve been using a less extreme version of this (left side extended grip) for a few years now and it’s way more comfortable and stable for handheld IMO. Someone also already recommended but Tilta has an awesome rosette arm with a quick tilt grip (matched with the nucleus nano FF). It’s awesome.
That still does not solve the focusing problem. No matter what you do with that arm, you still need to let go of one grip point and touch the focus ring anyway. So this solution is bad if you want to manual focus. The only way to make this work is to buy a tilta side focus handle and use that instead of that wooden handle.
This works only with auto focus setups. The problem with this is you need a focus puller. lol. This being a shoot and run camera setup... Having to take your hands every time off the lens is not convenient at all. Yeah, looks cool, but in real world scenario is not useful. I know that cuz i used it, or at least tried.
it is a principle I'm also digging into. the better handle for all that is the Tilta Left Side Advanced Focus Handle, which although comes with rosette mount, I find the nato one with quick release to be better. That gives rotation at the push of a button. I wish the handle was more ergonomic though - maybe in a later iteration. That Smallrig extendable arm is a part I was curious about as well, but I would have loved to have a way to adjust the extension without moving my hand or at least not requiring to rotate the knob that much - something smart like Shape has those push buttons would be nice, but I haven't seen anything yet. Ofc, this arm extension requires better cabling between the handle and the follow focus and unfortunately I haven't found a nice coiled solution for usb-c to micro-usb, but I keep hoping. And it's important to have a nice cable for that, as that can potentially open this rig (with or without such arm) to having it switched from handheld to shoulder mounted, using a rig similar to what you previously suggested 3 years ago - the shoulder rig with long rods going downwards, as to have the hands resting in a natural position around the body and not having to keep them up ruclips.net/video/5eUeD7f1xPI/видео.html - anywho, if any of this triggers some ideas about how to fill the gaps, do write back :D
@@RobinGuitonWhat are you talking about, this rig will help you to manual adjust the focus and avoid pulling the camera weight on one hand, with the rig, the weight will be distributed on your arm when you're focusing manualy
Oh! I was planning on doing something similar with my personal S5iix when that arrives with a Tilta Full Cage and Niceyrig Wooden handle! I found I really liked this slim hand held design while rigging our C70 at work.
Caleb your videos always look incredible but gah lee the skin tones in this video is too good! Also you look like you take really good care of your skin
Wow this might be perfect for the rig I use. I've been using a shoulder pad mounted vertically on the back of my rails to have something like a rifle butt for stability. However, using that leather handle with this adjustable arm as that rifle butt (like the Marauder back in the day) might fix the biggest problem I have which is packing it down and laying it on a table. Thanks for sharing!
I would really like to see a video abouut how you organise storage for all those small knobbins and dodats ... meaning accesories... both at home and on location.
I buy your digital products to support you so I'm hoping I can get away with this joke: If a few of us build this out too... we can call ourselves the tromboners... ha. I'll show myself out.
Looks nice and retro stylish, Caleb! Still (the first reason) when you need to manually focus you can’t keep the left hand on the handle? So still wobbly when focusing, right?🤔 Otherwise eye candy content and setup! 🍭👀👅

Oh, the new background looks super cool. Love the old Mac, and the vintage tables and lamps.
Cool rig but what songs can you play?
😂

Shane Hurlbut made it popular, I guess ;-)
"Chain saw mode" is awesome
I waited 10years for this video! THANK YOU!

Love the EVF stance! I’d probably use that with a shoulder rig set up.

How do you focus?
Yeah, but how are you pulling focus then, without a wireless follow focus?
Doesn't look very stable for me, and especially very prone to skewing horizon
And a complete lack of being able to pull focus manually
@@RobinGuitonWhat are you talking about, this rig will help you to manual adjust the focus and avoid pulling the camera weight on one hand, with the rig, the weight will be distributed on your arm when you're focusing manualy
I hve used this or similar config, the horizontal one is. (Not the EVF low hang)
@@RobinGuiton You could be having Tilta's handle with focus roll and their focus motors.
@@arthurkallinen could of course, but doesn't
i would go with this rig over shoulder rig for EVF position.

It really make me feel like kind of the same "Action Cam" rig from Shane Hurlbut. Very good idea of rig.
So it's basically half of an over-shoulder rig. Nice little bit of extra stability without adding too much bulk.
Great video! I was literally just thinking about a rig like this. Perfect timing! Hope you have a great day!
I would really like to see a video abouut how you organise storage for all those small knobbins and dodats ... meaning accesories... both at home and on location.
I think it's steady for the same reason modern rifle/AR stance is usually about getting that front hand as far forward as reasonable.
Caleb is like the random AK47 gun nut but in Camera form.
Another awesome idea 😁
Looks neat
Cool Idea Caleb!
Check out the “Kondor Blue Quick Release Rosette Module” would help a lot with this rig

Hahaha! No need to disclaim Lyndon! Thanks for the support bro.
if I'm using a 70-200, would the arm not get in the way of operating the zoom ring?
2:13 I felt that a little too hard. LOL Nice!
This is wild.
Caleb and matti great minds thumbnail alike !
Think that setup would work on a BMPCC 6k Pro?
Very interesting video 👌👌
As a trombonist I can say that this is indeed a trombone
I need one just like this
I wonder how well this would work with something like a 100-400?
/wow, I have not seen this configuration since before the internet. I'm not counting shoulder rigs in that
As trombone player who played for 12 years and had pay for most of college tuition. I approve this message.
I love it when u get crazy 😜
Fantastic content.
April fools was some time ago😂😂
Strange setup, you really can't focus with this, but in the start you talk, that focusing is hard with hand and it is unstable...
*slides into chat* This video was made for me.
is almost the way i been working since 2016

DIY DIY DIY DIY DIY DIY!
Just make sure it doesn't get rusty.
I hope it never gets rusty. Those never work. 😂
I did same already 😂 just doesn’t look normal.
It gets boring at the top huh
Believe Shane Hurlburt refers to this as the “man cam”.
You are joking,,ARNT YOU!
Nope!
Brilliant, now you can't focus
Follow focus handle
