We were not successful in breaking this teeth grinding habit in our end stage dementia parent. An eye tooth broke. So far, thankfully, no nerves have been exposed. Looking for tips to lovingly and with kindness, distract and stop this habit in very end stage dementia patient.
I never could keep my Dad from grinding his teeth. Any gum he would chee he would swallow minutes later which would then lead to his grinding again. Same thing with candy.....he would just chew it up immediately and swallow. It was very hard explaining to my Dad not to swallow but instead suck on the candy. Same thing with the gum. My Dad couldn't comprehend what I was saying. Some days were better than others.
