Regarding the size of the parliament, it was built during the period of Great Hungary, when it was the dual capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, an empire the size of a quarter of Europe with 30 different ethnicities.
@@joenandamalie And you forget the 365 towers on the building... Why they choosed this number, each day of a year is one tower? That is very misterious...

I appreciate that you made a really fun video. Its just pity when you mentioned that it was difficult to get around the city center - nothing can be further away from the truth. The public transportation is so great in the city, you just didn't take time to get familiar with it, but it is understandable. Also, about these questions that pop up all the time - why everything is grandiose regarding architecture - Budapest was not always just a capital of Hungary, small country. I used to be also the second capital city in Austro-Hungarian Empire - huge monarchy that ruled almost all of continental Europe for a few centuries. So this is basically a city that represents the glorious past, something relevant for all Europe, which made Europe become what it is now.
Your video is graceful and informative. A small detail I want to add to be more accurate, Budapest was merged with 3 cities including Buda, Pest, and Óbuda. I’m so pleased that you and your family enjoyed the trip.

Hungary Geographically, middle. Culturally, it is the easternmost west and the westernmost east at the same time. I give extra points for a bit of humor ! A few general things The Second World War and the communist regime that followed contributed greatly to the current image of Budapest. Budapest was not destroyed like most European cities at that time. The siege was long, perhaps the longest among European cities, but the damage was more spot-like. The communist regime was characterized by its approach to completely and permanently destroying the past. This was partially achieved, you can see the method in the House of Terror. The situation was a little different in terms of buildings. Many war-damaged but salvageable buildings were demolished (e.g. churches). Other buildings were restored, but simplified or rebuilt. Modern buildings were built on the vacant sites. The Haussman program is currently underway in the Buda Castle district. It aims to restore the Buda Castle to its pre-World War II condition. Just as the Italians say there is no pineapple on pizza, so we say there is no Hungarian pizza. And goulash is soup. That's it. Budapest was actually created by the merger of three settlements. Buda, Pest and Óbuda. The prefix ó means old. So this settlement is older than the other with the same name. The first name after the merger was Pest-Buda. This reflected the economic importance of Pest. Later, out of respect for the ruler, the order was reversed.Buda was a royal city. All Hungarian churches are active. This should be taken into account when visiting. Some places do not allow strangers during ceremonies. About the opera house: When it was built, the ruler of the time (Franz Joseph) ordered that it could not be bigger than the Vienna Opera. At the opening, he remarked: I forgot to say that it should not be more beautiful than the Vienna Opera.. A camera in the toilet? Muhaha. It will be a smoke detector..Because smoking is not allowed in the toilet, and the use of a smoke detector is mandatory. Dracula: The most influential figure of the silent film era is Béla Lugosi. There is a Bust on the wall of the Vajdahunyad Castle (and there is also a reading Dracula statue). The St. László Church in Kőbánya has a similar coating to the Matthias Church. But this tile can be seen in many places. This coating is called eosin glazed pyrogranite. Or simply majolinka. Hungarian patent, produced in Pécs since 1873. Kürtőskalács. Legend links it to the Tatar invasion of 1242. It is certain that this type of cake was already known at that time. Its name was botratekert (twisted on a stick). If you saw how it was made, you would understand the name. According to legend, a group of fugitives hid in a cave on the top of a mountain. The pursuers were waiting at the bottom of the mountain because they did not know the way to the cave. The food in the cave ran out. The fugitives thought of making such a "cake" out of straw and showing it to the Tatars. The tatars they saw that there was a lot of food in the cave and left. Tram. The presented tram is Hungarian-made and specially made for Budapest. (There are also trams in Debrecen and Miskolc in addition to Budapest.) The trams were made between 1967-78. They were rebuilt to their current form in the early 2000s. Two units can be connected. Paprika: In Hungary, we also call the berry of the pepper paprika. Chili is the name of peppers of tropical origin. We classify it according to the shape of the berry. If you don't like strong, then avoid the hegyes erős /pointed strong variety. This is a dark green long pointed berry variety. An iconic product is Erős Pista. This is a salty ground pepper cream. Its logo is a mustachioed male face. Tokaj: Empress Catherine the Great kept a permanent sales team in Tokaj to purchase wine. If you come next time, take a look at the nearby towns. Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom, Eger. These are easily accessible by train or bus. The first three can also be reached by boat. In the case of Hollókő, I recommend your own or rented vehicle, because transportation is the easiest that way. In the case of Szigetvár as well. These are 1-day tours. Unfortunately, reaching many beautiful places without your own or rented car (minibus) is impossible.
At 23:09 - M1 basically was a very first "tram-train". Until London had steam engines, that pulled the cars, we built basically an underground tram, thats why looks tiny, and if you look above you can still find the power tracks traces above where the engines received power. At 23:36 - The Pariament was built for both the "upper house", and the "lower house", we had basically a copy of the English parliament in law structure, and that was the reason to be able to handle many leader people. 1885 is still the Great Hungary. For the summary: Budapest is mistakenly believed that is the whole country, and usually tourists doesn't care about other cities. But Budapest always been a hub between east and west, and you can even find turkish, lebanese, korean, pakistani, mongolian food, russian grocery store, turkish grocery store, and pick what ever you like. We have muslim minority, jewish people, armenians, and many more together. Try to understand Hungarians, and our history. Also not a big deal if you don't use the funicular, a little bit longer to take the stairs - but you can see more.
To my knowledge, the millennial subway was built by digging from the top rather than boring underground, and before electricity, the cars were horse-drawn. At least that's what I heard. Please verify if true. :)
@@BenjaminIstvanCseko It was indeed built from above, but it was electric-powered. BUT at the same time, there were indeed horse-drawn passenger railways in Budapest.
Hi Danes! Glad to see you. I really enjoy Rick Steves :) yes, the Mr Roger’s of travel. Good to see you. I don’t recall if we got to view your father’s homeland visit in Faro islands?? Stay safe and Keep on traveling :) hello from New York.
Happy Birthday Søren! Thank You so much for this very kind and detailed review about our capitol city Budapest. BUT here are some tips next time You visit us: Everything can be more tastier and less expensive, if You avoid the main tourist spots. Less crowded areas are maybe not that super clean. But smaller restaurants are super friendly and way more authetic too. If You use the local transportlines BKV, it is a bit cheaper and safer too. Taxi companies are like hienas here. 17.000 Huf from the airport to the city center? That taxi driver is a scammer bastard. 8-9.000 Huf is the current tarif. You can also use "Über" which can be cheaper. About national hungarian food: The most common dishes are Goulash, Chicken paprikas with nokedli, Roasted turkey with mashed potatoes. But You can also try "Mákos Guba" which is a poppyseed-bread soaked in milk (in restaurants mostly with vanilia pudding). "Túró" is a widely used ingredient in Hungary. It is halfway between milk and cheese, but it is NOT cottage cheese as internet says... Germans have a good word for it "Quark". You can find it in "Rétes" or Strudels in english, alone or with some fruits/seeds. Please forget the plain "tourist deserts/cakes" too like Dobos or Eszterházy cake ... not a big deal. Try out the award winning "Cake of the Year" ones, like "Őrség zöld aranya" - Green gold of Őrség. Now thats a really fancy and tasty one. Chimney cakes are also very different nowdays. The traditional/OG one is with only cinnamon and sugar, not filled. Lángos is very popular and we also love it. The original is with garlic sauce, sour cream and cheese. Find smaller, not so popular Lángos places. They are better and cheaper. Overall I've really enjoyed Your video. Quality and editing is on another level. New subscriber here. :D And please be always this kind and loveable. This world needs so much more funny and light hearted ppl like You and Your family. Sending hugs and hope You will come back to us. visit the countryside too, You will be shocked how beautiful places we have and people are even more friendly there.
I'm from Budapest and I don't like the former socialist hotels next to our most beautiful churches either. But that's socialism. They destroy the beautiful on purpose.
Parliament was built for the Astro-Hungarian monarchy. At the time it was the largest and strongest empire, and also the largest one in EU until WWI... That building should have to symbolize the power of the empire...
Hope you didn’t miss the Aldi in the basement of the market! Cheapest pastries ever! So you couldn’t pull off the red track suit but that red/white thing is ok?
We actually passed it, but it was closed. You are comparing my wonderful red and white stretch hoodie from Orlebar Brown with an oversized Adidas tracksuit 😢. I'm so sad now.
It's a really underrated city. More tourists even go to Dublin than to Budapest. But the difference between the two cities is heaven and earth. They don't know Budapest, they think that a former socialist city can only be ugly. They couldn't be more wrong.
Oh, so you're the tourists who make it impossible to cross the Chain Bridge without getting pushed up because you can't walk 3 centimeters further... Welcome to my home town! 🙂
Great video. Pink cap is flat, blue cap is carbonated. The eclectic architectural style comes from buildings having been built over the span of (literally) millennia and the fact that using historical elements in contremporary building is, wisely, banned. Absolutely NO melted cheese on Langos, please! YIKES! Gross. If I want to eat pizza, I'll eat a pizza. If I want to eat langos, I'll have a langos! Budapest is on an undeterred ambitious trajectory to becoming the most expensive city in Europe (we Hungarians go to Vienna and Paris now to enjoy the cheap prices there), but I somewhat argue the commercialized city idea in comparion to Paris, Venice, and--especially--Prague, where in the establishments all the guests are foreigners and all the staff are Czech. In Budapest, both the wait staff and the guests are about 50% locals and 50% foreigners (it's very often that the waiters in a cafe or restaurant don't speak Hungarian at all), so, for me, Budapest is very much enjoyed by the locals (such as me), as well as the tourists and expats mixed.
It is a proudness to be Hungarian and that we even exist is unbelievable after the Habsburgs occupation and we got grabbed in into two world wars by the Germans. I don`t mind to be called eastern European just don`t understand why the EU is about to grant membership for Georgia what is geographically is in Asia :D
It's fairly slow because of the infrastructure is full of one way streets and whenever you have to crossed from Buda to Pest or vice versa, it is kind of a journey and also fairly expensive. We didn't take the busses, but I can't imagine it would be faster?
@joenandamalie I've yet to be in a big city that isn't mostly one-way streets. I took public transportation all over the city and found it very convenient.
Budapest an underrated city? Nonsens. That is a famous city in central Europe like Prague and everyone normal knows how beautiful and interesting it is.
Nice and very informative video. I like your focus on beauty and how you contrast it to monsterous, modern architecture. However Hungary doesn’t have the third lowest minimum salary, for exempel Sweden and Denmark has 0 as a minimum salary. In many countries salaries don’t reflect what people typically earn. For example in Hungary below 1% of the population actually earns minimum salary. It is there to force small businesses to pay at least some income tax since the law requires companies to have at least one full time employee. And then there’s of course other small companies like restaurants, carpenters etc where some work on minimum salary on paper and then get the rest of your salary ”on the side”… But average salary in Budapest is about three times the minimum salary.
You mixed up the sparkling and the still waters. Blue is sparkling. Also when you pointed at the that hella ugly Hilton hotel next to the Matthias church you said "communism" lol.

Budapest, Vietnam?
Edit: Finally finished watching. Budapest is awesome and I am looking forward to the Vietnam videos.
Also, Happy Birthday Søren!
Thanks so much! ❤
Hey Zoltan. Thanks for your insights. Appreciate it ❤
To my knowledge, the millennial subway was built by digging from the top rather than boring underground, and before electricity, the cars were horse-drawn. At least that's what I heard. Please verify if true. :)
@@BenjaminIstvanCseko It was indeed built from above, but it was electric-powered. BUT at the same time, there were indeed horse-drawn passenger railways in Budapest.
Azt a járművet omnibusznak hivták
Grattis i efterskott Sören! 🎉😊

Hi Danes!
Glad to see you. I really enjoy Rick Steves :) yes, the Mr Roger’s of travel. Good to see you. I don’t recall if we got to view your father’s homeland visit in Faro islands?? Stay safe and
Keep on traveling :) hello from New York.
Our Faroe Islands video is here: ruclips.net/video/M-VEUD3G2VY/видео.html ❤
@ oh, there was a part two? Not sure how we missed it? Stay well
You two, guys, the pretty blond girl and the scrubby lad, were very sympathetic for me.
Sending hugs and hope You will come back to us. visit the countryside too, You will be shocked how beautiful places we have and people are even more friendly there.
correction: the pink water is still and the blue one is the sparkling.
24:55 Because these were healing buildings through vibration(check Tartaria) and aether harvested from the air, just like the pyramids.
Happy birthday Soren🎉
Happy Birthday Sören 🥂 💕 🎉
❤
Wow just love watching your vlog.enjoy🎉
Thanks so much! ❤❤❤
Happy Birthday, Soren!
❤
Happy Birthday Soren!
❤❤❤
Pink means still. Not blue. 😊
Tillykke, Søren!
❤
I'm from Budapest and I don't like the former socialist hotels next to our most beautiful churches either. But that's socialism. They destroy the beautiful on purpose.
Maybe you guys can book your wedding at one of those churches. 😉
That would be epic!!!
2:17 Ain't been yet... but do you have the airport right in the middle of Copenhagen? It must be wonderful experience.
Thank you for sharing. Budapest is definitely a beautiful city. Enjoy Vietnam.
Thank you ❤
Happy Birthday Soren Epic vlog
❤
Happy birthday soren🎉🎉🎉🎉
❤
The parliament is so big because Hungary was much bigger before 1920.
Parliament was built for the Astro-Hungarian monarchy. At the time it was the largest and strongest empire, and also the largest one in EU until WWI... That building should have to symbolize the power of the empire...
Fake!!100% hongrois!!!! We are built them ,not Austria!!!
@ what are you talking about?? who said that Austria built it?? 🤔🤔🤣
❤❤ HAPPY BDAY SØREN 🎉🎉🎉🎉
❤
The average salary in Hungary is indeed 700 euros, but for Budapest its double that, about 1400 euros.
🤣 love you guys! Happy Holidays! loved the video too!
It's a really underrated city. More tourists even go to Dublin than to Budapest. But the difference between the two cities is heaven and earth. They don't know Budapest, they think that a former socialist city can only be ugly. They couldn't be more wrong.
Budapest Metro 1 is the oldest metro in continental Europe and the first electric metro in the world!
It's not underrated and it's in Central Europe and it's one of the most beautiful cities all over.
Oh, so you're the tourists who make it impossible to cross the Chain Bridge without getting pushed up because you can't walk 3 centimeters further... Welcome to my home town! 🙂
Happy birthday Soren 🎉
24:30 you can book it in advance online
FYI there are elevators to the castle just on the other side of castle hill :)
I like this video. More Eastern Europe 🙏 : Bulgaria(I recently went, it’s good), Poland, Lithuanian, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia.
Glad you enjoyed. For now we only have this Budapest video. Maybe in the future we come back for more!
My lovely City 🫶🏽
You should have go to a thermal bath like Rudasfürdő or Széchenyi
Yeah, we didn't make time for that, unfortunately.
@ Maybe next time 😉
People who like BP always come back 🙌🏽
❤
12 million tourists per year - it’s a stretch to call it underrated 😂
Where do you get this number? In 2023, Budapest had 6.9 million visitors.
Great video.. BUD is on the list.
Getting around is not hard. It's cheap and easy, get a 3 day unlimited card and trams, buses, and the subway are excellent
I saw a lot of Oporto. I would love to visit
❤
No is not underrated, only honest people telling what a ripoff place is it.
Happy birthday, Soren from Canada. May continue to enjoy good health and happiness 🎉
❤
Budapest an underrated city? Nonsens. That is a famous city in central Europe like Prague and everyone normal knows how beautiful and interesting it is.
33:57 First you have to reborn as a genius!!!
It's on top of my list
❤
What a treat, thanks for sharing and happy birthday 🎂🎈Soren
❤
Happy birthday Amalia dad 🎉
❤
15:46 be more respectful and dont say "holy shit" inside a church please!
Depends what you believe this church is for. It's up for personal interpretation, but of course we were just amazed with the beauty ❤
Yup we love to confuse tourists with HUF instead of EUR 😂😂😂
You guys are too cute ❤
You mixed up the sparkling and the still waters. Blue is sparkling.
Also when you pointed at the that hella ugly Hilton hotel next to the Matthias church you said "communism" lol.
