Sarah, don't feel embarrassed about getting excited over the sewing machine box. I think it is a good quality to celebrate things that make you happy. Your excitement made this episode.

Lots of "basics" can also be sourced from IKEA-type big box stores. Things like lamps & shades, Solid color rugs in wool or even sisal, solid-colored bedding that can be accented with covers & pillows you make. Then you fill in with all the wonderful finds from brocantes and estates sales. Wall space can also be filled with mirrors and photographs of your local area. I know you both have the creativity to mix old & new in an eclectic way. Best of Luck.
What a gorgeous Singer machine!! Since she's been in the case, she's been protected. So happy for you!! And those trunks are amazing, stunning. Congratulations!!!
The sewing machine was the deal of the century! I loved the chairs and trunks as well. They were really nice! I think many viewers were wondering about pricing. I actually liked the fabric on them. I must be old fashioned.
The chairs style look more in accordance to a period particular to an area of the chateau; I wouldn’t depart too much from the chateau’s period that calls for certain type of furniture and fabrics. That is just my personal opinion.
Stephanie did all the Drapes in Lalande over the years, and Micheal P did the longest ones I have even seen. Phillip has also learned furniture restoration. If you could get all four of you in one place for a few days, a drapery Vlog would be wonderful gift to us all.😁
A good size mirror is so useful, reflects light gives warmth, waste basket, a writing desk, comfortable chairs, bed side stands, head boards, lighting for reading. Will be fun shopping and repurposing things for you.
What a fruitful outing you had! So many excellent treasures that will add so much character to your rooms. I Love the bold print for the chairs...they are going to add such interest to the room. Having owned/run a 5 star BNB for 10 years in France (back in the 90s) I believe it's the accents that you add to a room, to make it feel warm, inviting and homely, that really appeal to people. They don't want a standard "hotel style" room when staying in a chateau, so have fun and add some personality to each one. I'm sure you'll both do a stellar job!!!
Oh those memories of having old Singer sewing machines in one’s home- love how excited Sarah was to find the tools/accessories included -good find Sarah!! 👍
In the first bedroom…. Could you perhaps move the bed to the other wall…. So they have a view out the window from the bed. And get rid of those half voile shades on the windows. You’ll need a gorgeous mirror above the fireplace. Beautiful curtains will make a huge difference and a lovely headboard. Your sewing skills will transform this in no time! Love from Warm, but rainy Sydney! 🍾🎶⭐️
From what I have seen on the vlogs, The brocantes have so much to look through in France. And the Prices!. We can't find the same in Ontario. But I have to say. I definitely would be getting myself a van or truck. lol. That was so nice of a fan to help with transport. Sara, with your talent for sewing I know you can make miracles with fabric.
@@barbdalrymple778 My family live in Brantford, not too far from Waterdown. We use to go there on Sundays when I was a child and eat a buffet lunch at the Plainsman. (I think that's what is called).
Yes, it’s called or was called the Plainsman. On highway five past highway six. We live in the old part of Waterdown. We moved here 41 almost 42 years ago. Our three kids grew up here and still live here. We just had our tenth grandchild on Friday. I think our last as our youngest child is 39 and gave us a grandson! Exciting times!
Wish you had said the price of the gorgeous trunks. After condition. Its the most relevant thing. A look inside would have been good too. Some great finds anyway.

What a score on the Singer!!!! Fun, two of the things i love the most, antiques and fabric stores. The chairs are going to be so unique. A conversation starter for sure!
First congratulations to you both for living out your dream. Now, for the decorating. Love that your sourcing second hand and breathing new life into old things. Wow what a find the sewing machine/table for 15 Euro ! Love the fabric you chose for the chairs, so looking forward to coming on this journey of transformation :)
Do not be afraid of bright colors and lots of them. Especially Fushia, gold, aqua with beige, and last of all lots and lots of pink. Explode and have fun!!! Tassles and fringes. Good to keep curtains in solids and furniture in solids but with texture and then go crazy with the pillows. Great to put ruffles on pillows and even some curtains.
A mirror above the fireplace would be nice, too. And new curtains for sure! Love the sewing machine and the chests!! Beautiful materials....the white textured one makes me think of Art Deco style....is that the direction you are planning? And will it be curtains? I love the jungle material and really love the blue with cherry blossoms best! Enjoy creating!
Wow, that sewing machine is such a lucky find!!! Don’t apologize for being excited about something; your enthusiasm is contagious. ♥️ It will be great to have those extra working machines for when you eventually do sewing workshops, as I’m sure some of your guests won’t be able to travel with their machines, and will enjoy the opportunity to make something on such a pretty one. 😁
A mirror with dresser, small table with 2chairs. The painting can be over the fireplace with candles and flowers on the mantle perhaps. Gorgeous rooms... Fresher colors would do the trick to brighten up the spaces... The Singer machine is a treasure indeed, Sarah! And only for 15€ ! 😍
This was my mother sewing machine when I was child; very beautiful. It just needs some LTC and it will continue to work for you as efficiently as it did before. I look forward to seeing its change. Beautiful material to chose from to make gorgeous curtains and chair covers. Your place will look wonderful when you're done with it; I am sure it will look very Canadian/Ontarian! A lot to look forward to!
Your chateau reminds me of my young childhood visiting my grandparents house. To me now it’s creepy to see same kind of furniture, floors, architecture. I could not live there, but I support your enthusiasm. Even my grandmother had that same sewing machine!
Wow, I absolutely love everything you bought...the trunks, the sewing machine, the chairs....fantastic! What a nice lady offering to help you out with delivery!!!! You deserve the help!
Those trunks😍😍😍 I would have bought those too. The sewing machine was a great buy. The Singer website is great for identifying models. And I love the chair fabric. Very fun!
Wow the previous owner really loved that Singer machine. Singer is such a wellknown company all of the world. Viva USA. Love your vlogs. Stay safe and happy. Greetings from South Africa
Greetings from a fellow Canadian -- island off the west coast of B.C. Having stayed in a lot of guest rooms in my time -- this is just a reminder to keep in mind that guests have suitcases and are carrying quite a bit of stuff that needs to go on side tables and possibly in drawers if they're staying for awhile. I mention this because I've been in guest rooms that were beautifully decorated but had no room for my suitcases or books and clock and glass of water, etc on the side table. Folding luggage racks are great if you can find them. Love your vlog!!
Oh my gosh i was just as excited and happy seeing that old Singer. What a deal. Loved the chair fabric. Decorate your space to your own tastes i say. It is your home after all. Look forward to seeing the rooms come together.
Sarah I am right there with you about your excitement over the sewing machine! It looks exactly like the one my mom had when I since a child. They are indestructible! What an amazing find with all the original parts too!
definitely headboards... my preference is for frames around canvas' (even the modern paintings) makes all the difference, even when you think it doesn't need it, it really makes a statement (always think I can get away with no frames and then I put a frame around one and totally change my opinion). Love the curtain fabric with the palms, they will look awesome....very bold. OMG that chair fabric....soooo coool 🤩😘
Great find on the sewing machine Sarah! I love the fabric for the chairs you bought and can’t wait to see how the bedroom refurbishing plays out. Thanks Sarah and Steve🙏🏻❤️
That singer machine is stunning, with all the original bits, what a fabulous find! I can see you ending up with a great collection of old sowing machines 🤩 The fabric is going to look so fabulous on the chairs, looking forward to be able to watch the makeover!
Morning Steve & Sara, the market place was gorgeous, those trunks are "blow your mind" goods. You can store linen or blanket inside in a particular room and save space in a cupboard! I think the rooms need colour and texture. Can you not move to a bigger room for yourselves? and those bedside lights, they can be placed somewhere else in the chateau, even just for added light on a piece of furniture. Don't throw them out, they can perhaps be painted and new coverings, too precious to chuck out. The chairs you discovered are very smart, cannot wait to see them reupholstered and that lady was super kind to offer assistance. There are people whom have kind hearts, not many, but they are there, especially when needed. This was a lovely video, Sara is going to be busy with the sewing, but that is good. Take care, have a wonderful time planning and organising the rooms. Kind regards.
Awesome finds and how wonderful to have a fan help you out when you were in need. The sewing machine is wonderful, especially with the parts in the box. that's a rare find.
A mirror over the fireplace would brighten that space. Great find on the singer. I loved sewing on a treadle, you can really control the stitch. You'll love it. It's nice to have a few drawers in a room. I hate living out of a suit case.
Oh wow the sewing table is amazing! I would have been just as ecstatic and I'm British 😁loved it definitely the bargain of the year 👏 Steve's paintings look great and your floors are a lovely colour/ condition too. Can't wait to see the rooms taking shape but you should make your own room lovely first so that at the end of the day you can escape the DIY and really relax 😚🍷
I wanted to shop with you! Next time show us what’s for sale, & prices. We love going. Steve, you don’t have to worry about buying Sarah diamonds! I loved her reaction to the sewing machine. I really enjoyed the process of ideas for the bedrooms. Focusing on luxurious beds, with canopies or curtains, brings richness. I watch on my tv now, & often forget to like or comment. I’m absolutely shocked that this chateau doesn’t have any wallpaper. Wallpaper is hugely expensive & time consuming. Tapestries would be a quick colorful, rich fix. Excited to see the process. We want to shop with you!
I love those trunks .. & that sewing machine .. what a gem you found 🥰 I found an old Singer machine in my local charity shop .. just a table top one with a domed case & now I want a treadle table! You lucky thing! 😁 Love your Chateau ❤️
I have the base that belonged to my grandmother and the wood was destroyed and the machine we couldn’t find 😞 When living in Italy I called my father to get the measurements of the top. I purchased a piece of Italian marble for it. ❤️ It now finally sits in my kitchen in Alabama 🥰 and currently holds wine at the bottom on the treadle pedal 🍷 🤤
What lovely chairs. They look like they belong in the chateau right now, just recovering with identical fabric. Your chateau has very strong sturdy bones, is not ephemeral, so needs a certain look. I can't wait to see what you come up with. If it's anything that reflects your costume sewing skills, whatever you make will be fantastic. Inside, the chateau is very Germanic in flavor - the woodwork, fireplace, stairways are all in a solid style, not flowing. It will be out of this world. Will try to be patient as you bring it to life. Am enjoying your blog. Hard to wait for the next one.
The finds look great, but I love the fabric shop. I am in France at the moment, just looking how far it is. If you need edging for the chairs, ebay and esty have loads of lovely pieces.
Oh my goodness I just want to go to that fabric store. Loved watching you unpack the Singer, Sarah, that is like the one I learned to sew on as a child, that my father found and restored for me. It brought back such beautiful memories. Wonderful video, thank you so much Sarah and Steve, so full of wonderful information and I love seeing and hearing about what you have planned. Happy days. cs❤
Excellent find Sara...I don't blame you for being so excited about the Singer sewing machine! It's in excellent shape! The trunks are lovely. Can't wait to see the new curtains and the chairs re-upholstered. Enjoyed watching. Thank you, take really good care of yourselves, stay well! Much love Kathy x (Ontario, Canada)
Bonjour Steve and Sarah wow you have a good eye ooh that sewing machine €15 a bargain and a renowned label Singer the best I learnt to sew on my grandmothers machine I still have the treadle one priceless😍❤️The curtain fabric will uplift the room and the chairs will be transformed arty with history fabulous choice👌Such a kind gesture from a fan and the odds of bumping into one just an ahaaa moment Thankyou for another inspiring enjoyable vlog always full of surprises and fun Abiento my loves😘😘❤️❤️😍😍👌👌💖💖
I agree that lights, rugs and window coverings will make a great foundation for decorating the rooms. The fabric you had purchased for the Balsam room may conflict with the theme in the room ... but definitely an uplifting colour! I just *love* the various brocantes you visit, such riches to discover.
Fantastic sewing machine purchase Sarah. My treadle Singer folds down just like that but the middle section of the wooden top that opens is raised and the two pieces either side are lower. How marvellous to have the original attachments and manual. I can see there will be no stopping you now - bedroom curtains, here you come! Love the trunks too, they will add so much character to the bedrooms. 🥰
The one I have belonged to my husband grandmother it also fold in like this. It also has a wooden top it is one piece that opens and lays flat to the left for a nice surface for material to lay on. It’s been used to the max and a lot of the beautiful decorative gelding has warn off but it runs like a charm. Having the box is priceless. Don’t think you can find them often 😱 What a find!!!!
Fun to go fabric shopping with you both!! The fact that you're artsy people shows through! You choose gorgeous fabric to dress those bedrooms! Keep going!
OMG!!!!! Sara!!! That sewing machine is an absolute TREASURE!!! Oh how wonderful & rare to have all the assessories! WOW, just WOW! And it's a beaut!! What a Blessing from above! God is Great!! So excited for you!
Great finds on your shopping trip. Love the trunks. Wonder if they would go very well in the terrace room. The gorgeous fabric you have for the Balsam suite doesn't seem to match the theme of the loon art in that room; however, it would look fabulous in the terrace room to complement the wall color, ethnic art, trunks, and fireplace. Perhaps one of the black tufted chairs from the Balsam room would fit next to a trunk for seating in the terrace room. A gold-framed mirror over the trunk and black chair, pulling more color from the art piece. A few pillows with colors taken from the beautiful art piece, and a throw or bed cover similar to the print in the blanket in the art piece. A tall, caned headboard to contrast the textures in the room. Soft, lightweight white fabric hung from a black wrought iron crown to keep the room from looking smaller and carry the theme. Window privacy curtains could match the crown fabric. Those two small chairs would work so well with the other features and placed under the art on each side of that little table that is also in there now. A gold planter with tall green plants or vase of tall, dried pampas grasses on the fireplace to help with the awkward corner. The bed tables and lamps would now really work well with it all. An earth tone sisal rug. Excited to see the results of your decorative room make overs. Thank goodness there seems to be very little structural work to be done on your new home. Sorry to be so lengthy, but the potential is so very exciting. Loved this video.
Oooo love the drape material for the Balsam Room. Great eye catching print and colours. Looking forward to seeing the progress made. I’m really enjoying your channel. I look for you to post. Take care both of you. By the way , your costumes for Venice were magnificent. Such talented sewing. Cheers from Penetanguishene.
Hello I’m “penny prince andrews” I to am an artist, children ‘s writer , an interior designer . When I was young, I too owned a singer sewing machine,it was in the 1960’s got it cheep but it worked.😃 I have a few suggestions for you , when your making a new set of curtains don’t discard the old ones if in good shape and a compatible color. Often times when making a good long standing drape there are three layers, therefore you can use old ones for middle panels and cream or white facing the window. Many times I used sheets because of size and saved on expense. You have three definite rooms you pointed out all will be similar from top to bottom. Time will allow your top to be your fancy part fringe tassels etc. I hope you don’t mind these suggestions, color matching is also important, blend if it’s soft room ,dramatic contrasting color Steve will understand as your co designer. Seating area you could make pillows to match if you have small remenents, your headboard could be a contrast instead of a match the curtain. Think from your ❤️ heart. Also remember to sleep in all of your rooms, they will talk to you. Michael Patharick painted on Stephanie s walls Steve could create a stencil. Or a bottom paneling. Is this too much information, if so I’m very sorry. I’m excited for you I wish I was there to help. I can’t wait to watch the progress…. By the way… I’ve been watching since you were a Chateau La Land. This is my 1st time writing. I hope to write more. I live in Los Angeles, I’m 79 in April and I am living vicariously through you Chateau owners, when I moved here from Minnesota I put a piacque on my Apt door. “ Chateau Blanc” it’s still there. My Own little Chateau. Bye for now. Your idea gal. Penny prince andrews
HElla from Orillia Ontario. When you mentioned Balsom Lake it took me back many years when we spent our summers on the lake. Many happy times boating and swimming. Good luck pursuing your dreams.
Love the fabric for the chairs. Sarah the sewing machine was a fantastic find.the bobbing hold so much more thread than the newer machines. I hate having to rewind a bobbin every time I sit down at the machine.
What a wonderful find the Singer machine is! My mother had one of the first electrified versions but it looked the same and I am sure the "innards" were very similar. It purred along in all its well-oiled glory so I know you are going to enjoy restoring and using that baby!
I agree those bedrooms need some life to them. The first room wants a gold ornate mirror over the fireplace. And as you said, new curtains, rugs, lights, headboard and a sitting area in all the rooms is a good idea. Good luck. I also love the sewing machine. What fun!
When you chose your chateaux home you made a good choice. It’s in exceptional good condition. You’re very fortunate to find something like that. The vibrant patterns and colours of material you are using shows your travelled experiences in warmer climates around the world. The same goes for your paintings on your walls. So what period Is your château going to be decorated? What would you call it?
Great finds on trunks, sewing machine and fabric. I had to make some large and very long curtains. I used tablecloths in a solid color. They were already hemmed, and polyester is so easy to wash/dry. It would be good as a backing for curtains too. I found it so much affordable to make curtains this way. You could also embellish with trim and tassels!
the trunks are super cool and unique! The chairs are beautiful..you guys are so nice, and sweet of the viewer to bring back your chair for you! The sewing machine is an awesome find! You probably can find others and do a sewing workshop! love this vlog! THanks for sharing!
Really looking forward to the decorating. I would suggest a desk/table/vanity piece in each room. Also, a row of hooks for hanging robes and other clothing.
Love your love of an old Singer sewing machine, your excitement is contagious Sarah. And the trunks, I’m a big fan of those. In the first bedroom how about moving the bed to the wall where the door is if there is space. That way guests look out into the garden from the bed. Also much better feng shui not have the door open onto/across the bed.
Viewing Morti doesn't think that Video Sara needs to get out more, Viewing Morti thinks that Video Sara knows an absolute bargain treasure when she finds one and has every right to be excited and enthusiastic. Such an amazing find - especially to still have its manual!
Well that singer brought back lots of memories of using my mum's treadle machine when I was at school. I loved it , wish I still had it . What a find Sara x
I was talking to a coworker today and we found out that we watching the same RUclips channels , and we love you so much no only because you are Canadian is because we love to volunteering and I hope our dreams come truth very soon 🙏💪
The chairs will look good with the new fabric the 2 trunks are in very good condtion well what bargain Sarah got with the Singer sewing machine well done sarah
Would you put sheer curtain panels up behind the curtains? Sheers still allow light in yet blocks the view in from outside. I have seen some really beautiful ones, plain, with colored patterns etc.
Have you considered making the first bedroom ‘an homage’ to Steve’s art and make the style more modern in flavor? It seems pretty much a blank slate at present. The new chairs and the fabrics you just bought might go well in there, and if Steve has a tall rectangular painting for over the fireplace that would draw your eye up with those high ceilings. The middle bedroom with the wardrobe and painted walls looks just to need your artistic touches, and the Balsam Suite is really 👍🏻
I am so jealous that you got that sewing machine for 15 euros. What a bargain and with the manual as well. I agree with previous comments made regarding sleeping in each room to get a feel for what works and what’s lacking. Love your finds at the brocante and the fabrics. I would end up spending a fortune in that fabric wear house. Thanks for sharing 😍😘

Love the sound of vintage sewing machines.Your Singer is a steal! The exotic upholstery fabric will look fabulous on the chairs. Have fun!
Mood board your rooms it will help and think long term maintenance on frequently touched areas you’ll need durable colors
Loved this episode so much!!! That fabric for the chairs is stunning! Keep up the beautiful and inspiring work!
Using a curtain to close off that area will make that room much warmer in winter too.
I think the room needs a mirror, maybe over the fireplace?
I love the sewing machine, what a great find.
That singer machine is stunning, with all the original bits, what a fabulous find! I can see you ending up with a great collection of old sowing machines 🤩
The fabric is going to look so fabulous on the chairs, looking forward to be able to watch the makeover!
What a find. This machine with the foot peddle is the first machine I used at my grandmas how to learn to sew. So much fun
Awesome finds and how wonderful to have a fan help you out when you were in need. The sewing machine is wonderful, especially with the parts in the box. that's a rare find.
It really is!
Omg Sara… it was such a sweet reaction to “THE BOX” 😆🙌🙌😀
May I suggest a mirror for the guest room, perhaps over the mantelpiece. The sewing machine is a true find! So many accessories with it!
Happy days. cs❤
Uh, exiting. Looking forward to see the progress. Love the fabricks
OH MY WORD! YOU HIT THE JACKPOT WITH YOUR FIFTEEN EURO FIND! Great job!
Grand vlog and how exciting that you now feel ready to put your own stamp on your new home. Love the fabric…..good luck and take care.
You may want to think about buying trim and adding it to the existing curtains. So much easier. The new sewing machine is beautiful
Sarah’s excitement made my day 🙌🙌 I’m so pleased 😀
When I was young, I too owned a singer sewing machine,it was in the 1960’s got it cheep but it worked.😃
I have a few suggestions for you , when your making a new set of curtains don’t discard the old ones if in good shape and a compatible color.
Sarah just the singer manual is gold !!!
HElla from Orillia Ontario. When you mentioned Balsom Lake it took me back many years when we spent our summers on the lake. Many happy times boating and swimming. Good luck pursuing your dreams.
Iloved that very bold fabric. With simple cream wall and accesories in the colors of the fabric, that would be a’azing and give the room such a boost!
Severe fabric envy here. What a wonderful warehouse. You lucky people. The fabrics you chose will work really well.
The lady we met was so kind and lovely! Meeting people like that is a real plus of putting ourselves out there!
Really looking forward to the decorating. I would suggest a desk/table/vanity piece in each room. Also, a row of hooks for hanging robes and other clothing.
If you have any of the bold print from the chairs leftover make some throw pillows for the bed in the same room.
I’m glad to see that both of you are using your artistic flair while decorating the rooms. No need to have a stuffy château, make it fun and artistic!
Another maker here...oh Sara I understand your joy at finding the box still with the machine!
OMG AND the manual!!!!!!
My grandma had the same Singer sewing machine! Reminds me good memories! So glad you found it!
I was talking to a coworker today and we found out that we watching the same RUclips channels , and we love you so much no only because you are Canadian is because we love to volunteering and I hope our dreams come truth very soon 🙏💪
So exciting, doing up your bedrooms. Looking forward to seeing the work in progress!
Loved your showing us your rooms paint feature wall paint the rest but add gold accents on wood, and Steve’s art work everywhere
Excited to see your new projects come to life! Great sewing machine and loved the new chair fabric. Enjoying your vlogs very much. Thank you x
Love the treadle machine. I remember my gran making doll clthes on hers with my help of course.🥰
The decorating is very exciting - thanks for sharing with us and excellent score with the Singer. I know Balsam Lake - my family is in Haliburton.
The fabric you chose for the chairs somewhat mimics your opening credits! Un gros bonjour du Québec!
Someone has really looked after that beauty of a sewing machine! And I think you get out enough just fine 🙂 Trunks and chairs are beautiful. Can't believe you've been there for six months already too. Time sure does fly. Looking forward to seeing your transformations!
What a great find the sewing is ,from one sewing lady to another ,trunks look great as well
I think it's so cute and funny that Sarah said she was "chuffed" She is fitting in with her buddies wonderfully. 😄
Love the fabric for the chairs and the sewing machine! That was a steal.
