Here are the lectures from a Yale course on current topics in astrophysics for non-scientists: ruclips.net/p/PLD1515420F4E601A4
The standard answer I get for this is that *nothing* existed before the big bang. What if that's not true? What if the big bang sploded into a universe that had dark matter/dark energy pervasive out to infinity? That is, the dark energy/dark matter universe already existed and just needed Higgs to have mass. There would be a Higgs wavefront proceeding ever so closely in front of the regular matter/energy wavefront.
how can we measure the scalar gravity?
vector gradient is easy but the total distortion is what im wanting to measure
Astrophysics is for non-scientists. Astrophysicists are pseudoscientists by the very definition of the word.
@@rightsarentwrong5635 You've never opened an astrophysics book, have you?
Michael Sommers yes I have so you shouldn’t assume, I see it for exactly what it is, pseudoscience. If you don’t have any viable hypothesis in the history of astrophysicist, cosmology or astrology then the entire lot is pseudoscience. Are you claiming that you have a viable hypothesis from one of these 3 fields of pseudoscience?
"White dwarfs are the pikachu to black holes Raichu."
I love your double down nerd comparison! It made me so happy!
I’ve never been more proud of analogy
@@DrBecky Wait...you know Pikachu but not Star Trek? Looking forward to your Totoro analogy ;)
More like pichu as white dwarf and pikachu as neutron star and raichu as black holes.
LOLs "It was before my time." Damn, you make feel my age. I remember watching Star Trek The Original Series when it first aired in the 1960s. Cheers, Russ
But Queen was before Becky's time too. You need to watch this video of her ;-)
ruclips.net/video/noT8kkdl8hE/видео.html
So maybe Star Trek never was as cool as the reality in space out there.
Same here, my favorite is The Omega Glory. It is hard to imagine with her enthusiasm with space that she wasn't curious what the originals were about. For the time it was pushing the limits, with multiple races in the cast and very thought provoking subjects people still do not understand. IIRC, it was past prime time sort of like when Saturday Night Live came out.
Space is fake
Can you do an interview with Editing Becky? Or can't you be in the same room together? 😊
Maybe it's her alter ego? I mean, no one's ever seen them together in the same room... :-P
If they meet, they annihilate and turn into pure energy.
Should be doable, parent-trap it
Editing Becky is kind of like RoboCody. She's only trained to do the one thing.

Well done on the 50k subscribers. 👍 I tell everyone about this channel and how good it is😊
Thanks Mark 🤗
Dr. Becky Yes 50,000 proof that a sucker is born every minute!
@@DrBecky Star Trek: The Next Generation. Ep. The Inner Light... you're welcome. It's literally the best episode ever, you won't regret it.
@@Rattus-Norvegicus Totally agree, great episode and excellent concept...one of my favourite episodes.
Congratulations! Hope the million will come fast too. Keep accreting fans, you are a star :)
Congratulations🎉🎉 so deserved
Your videos are always so interesting
Hello Dr.Becky. I'm a 63 year old (male) amateur astronomer and meaning absolutely nothing inappropriate, I absolutely adore you. Out of all the folks I follow, you are by far my favorite. I love your material. Please keep doing what your doing.
Interesting videos, Becky. I enjoy them very much. (I'm a nearly 70 year old fan.) Keep going girl.
That's okay, Star Trek, Dr. Becky's never seen me either.
Proud to have been here since the triple digit-days! My girls love watching this channel with me!
Thanks Richard 👍🤗 say hi to your girls for me 👋
Congrats on the 50K!! Of course we love to listen to you, Dr. Becky!
Love your teaching style and how excited and passionate you are about your career. Refreshing to see and very educational. Thank you.
"A Neutron Star is like a Pikachu to a Black Hole Raichu" - Rebecca Smerthurst 2019
Keep up the good work :)
That was a brilliant analogy :) should be sold on t-shirts xD
3:00 ... Guy walks past. "Huh? Who is she talking to?" Looks at sign on door, "Oh, astrophysicist. OK then."
You have such light and happiness radiating from your being. It is great to watch. It is nice to see someone so happy to speak about science.
In less than a year, you've more than doubled it! I'm one more tick in that, love science videos, love space, and man does a lot of that stuff really blow my mind.
Dr. Becky is my favorite popular scientist since Carl Sagan- she explains complex topics without condescending to her viewers.
Her skill set is probably too similar to Dr. Neil deGrass Tyson's understanding for her to appear as a scientific expert on StarTalk. Too bad. Those two are my 2 favourite physicists.
@Pete lol ok
Yes she makes us feel dumb. Lucky her I guess
But she is sooo many orders of magnitude better looking than N dG T 😊
I was going to ask about the recent discovery that the universe may be very slightly positively curved, but then you pulled up the exact paper I was going to refer to ( 22:49 ). Looking forward to your video on it.
@Esme Moore I think we are still in a Schwarzschild white hole. If we look far enough into the past (in any direction), we see the closest thing possible to its singularity, the CMB. You would expect that from the past light cone of an observer in a white hole on the Carter-Penrose diagram.
Objects dropping beyond the cosmological event horizon could be exiting the white hole, as no light from outside the hole can reach an observer still in it.
I greatly appreciate the enthusiasm you show in your vids. Congrats and keep it up.
Congratulations on the 50K subscribers. Yes we will return here often to listen to you explain the Universe around us. I thank you for your sharing of this information.
YAAAAAAAAAAAY! My most favoritiest astrophysicist EVER!
Can you explain how astronomers detect and measure magnetic fields over large distances? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Ever find an answer? I've been wondering about the details of this myself.
@@beaker_guy No, sure haven't. I know it has to do with the polarization of the light as an indicator but I've never seen a detailed explanation...if you find one please let me know! Thanks for taking the time to ask.
Always such a joy watching you talk astrophysics! So much joy! Wish we could all find something to do that is that engaging! Love ya' Dr. Becky!
Dr. Becky you are amazing. You are always so excited when you make these vids, it makes them realy fun to watch
Thank you for answering my question. I know it's silly but i kind of feel honoured :D
I say, yes, to a livestream because then Editing Becky can take a break and we can see all your flubs real-time!
Congrats on 50k! Love your videos and your ability to explain things in a way that is easy to understand
Usually I can't stand people who chatter at Mach 4, but I get a kick out of trying to listen as fast as you talk. And I learn. Thanks. Bravo!
Congrats on 50K!! You should do collabs with Matt O'Dowd from PBS Spacetime and Cristine from Simply Nailogical! :D Matt studies Quasars if I recall correctly (aka active galactic nuclei), and Cristine does incredible Nail Art and is a hilarious human
Also I have a science question :) Do gravitational waves interact with Black Holes in any way? Do they distort the event horizons? Does the wavelength of the gravitational wave matter at all?
I recommend Star Trek DS9. It's the best Star Trek series. Objectively.
Valdagast in your opinion. (I share it, but it’s just an opinion) ;)
Congragulations on reaching 50K subscribers, well deserved I think always look forward to your videos, also enjoyed your book, couldnt put it down
I love your outtakes. They make me feel like you're having goofy fun. Instead of you know doing all of the hard work that actually went into the video.
Says Star Trek is "before her time." How to make us all feel REALLY OLD! LOL!
Really really old... I’m still getting used to middle age.
I like Einstein's original word for black holes: dark stars.
I like the CSN song of that title. From their album, _Daylight Again_
Fred
Oh my... there is a weird movie called "Dark Star".
'Let there be light'...
@@richard--s I know that movie; it's a "cult classic," from the 1970's, that started out as a college class project by a couple guys who later went on to more famous feature films.
It's a hilarious sendoff of "2001," and maybe a bit of early Star Trek thrown in.
And you've quoted the final line spoken by the sentient bomb, just before it "fufills its mission" . . .
Fred
@@ffggddss yes, that's it.
Congratulations on the 50k subs! We are now part of your accretion disk, and I see it getting bigger by the day!
Well done on the 50k subscribers Dr. Becky, you undoutably deserve even more!!!! Love your videos.Greetings from Greece!!!
Becks, you gotta watch _Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home_ . Funniest of the movies with the original cast, directed by Leonard Nimoy, and -- right up your street -- it's got space AND whales :-)
LOL! I was thinking exactly the same thing! Marine biologist collaborates with Star Trek to save whales! Ticks so many boxes that came up in this video!
It doesn't have Chris pine so she might not be interested lol. It does have George and Gracie tho but she might not be old enough to get that either
The pre-roll ad for this was for native Hawaiians in favor of TMT. I think it's a mistake to assume that all of them are anti-telescope. It's hypercorrective and sort of condescending to assume that there are no Hawaiians who can appreciate the value of knowing about the heavens.
Truth. I know so many who are in love w/the idea of learning about these kinds of things, but at the same time, we can't understand why the people who build these things have to always be so underhanded & break their promises each & every time. It's not just once or twice, it's like EVERY time for the last 50 years! =(
My apologies - I shouldn’t have assumed
@@DrBecky You can get up to speed on Star Trek pretty quickly by watching the movies in order, starting with Star Trek: The Motion Picture which came out in 1979 and was followed by eleven (!) more, ending with Into Darkness in 2013, a record which competes with the James Bond series.
If you watch any of the Original Series you hear the catchphrase "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before" but in subsequent series "Man" has been changed to "One," a nice nod to social progress.
No matter what, though, avoid any and all of the abortions made by J.J. Abrams, who has no respect for the original canon and are nothing but action films lacking any serious messages.
Congratulations Becky, you already have 53.1k now, not just 52k! I love you videos so much, you're my favorite channel. Love astronomy and how you talk, so can't be better!
As I’m finally watching this, you’re just coming up in 63,000 subscribers. Congrats! And thanks for giving us such interesting videos 😎

you are awesome! thank you for having this channel!
I believe your viewers will agree that you are probably the most energetic thing in the universe when it comes to sharing your enthusiasm for astrophysics. Great channel! Keep up the good work.
Hello Dr Becky can you please answer this outstanding question I asked previously. Can you provide a single viable scientific hypotheses in the entire history of either Astronomy, Cosmology, or Astrophysics? Thank you I’m still waiting.
How about anomalies in the orbit of Uranus to discover Neptune? Using maths alone, it was hypothesised that Neptune MUST exist. It was thus discovered.
You shouldn't be surprised at the success of the channel. I can't think of anyone who appears to have as much genuine enthusiasm for sharing their passion with others on the youtubes as you do. It won't be long before you hit 100K! Thanks for all the videos :)
You look soooo excited about your channel success. Bravo Dr. Becky, Bravo!
One of the things that has me puzzled as a science enthusiast is in a “how do we know” category. How do we know the expansion of the universe is accelerating?
Also, not directly related, when will we know a publication/availability date of your book for the unlucky inhabitants on the western side of the Atlantic?
John Kotches the key to that is the observable redshift of light.
You know the dopplereffect of sound, the whole thing about a siren changing pitch on approach and leave.
Light does the same thing, as it has wave properties like sound, just not density, electromagnetic waves.
Because we can determine the apparent distance of galaxies through object with constant and known brightness, we are able to analyze the degree of redshift. And because farther objects are more red shifted than nearer objects , we know they move farther away at a faster rate than they would of the universe were expanding at a steady rate.
Someone correct me, if that is not entirely right, please. :)
Timelord Victorious If my understanding is correct, (and currently up for debate that Hubble’s constant is a constant) then the redshift is a function of distance (X km/sec per megaparsec). If the rate is accelerating I think we would see nearer objects traveling statistically faster than the constant would provide for. Perhaps my perspective is backwards.. That the breaking from the constant is at the farther end, i.e. further objects are traveling statistically faster than the constant would provide for.
@@johnkotches8320 you cannot tell if something is accelerating from a snapshot. Measurements taken over time show redshift effect increasing. Increase in red shift means speed increasing
@@johnkotches8320, that is precisely the case. Because the relationship is not linear (i.e. object twice as far does not move twice as fast away from us), we know the expansion speed wasn’t constant.
@@johnkotches8320 No, if there was no acceleration the redshift would be roughly constant everywhere instead of increasing with distance. I believe a positive constant Hubble constant means constant acceleration, but if the Hubble constant is changing that means that the amount of acceleration is changing.
"I have seen the films" mentions Chris Pine... so no Wrath of Kahn or Undiscovered Country? Shameful
No First Contact? Outrageous!
That made me laugh. Then it made me feel old. Was Enterprise before her time? Deep Space 9? Voyager? I was about Wesley Crusher’s age when Next Generation came out. And I grew up before Netflix and Blockbuster so I also watched a lot of reruns. So I grew up with Original Series before that.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Congratulations. If i wasn't standing, i wolud have given you a standing ovation.
Congrats on the subs. Keep up with your fantastic content. Cheers Becs x
So great to see your shock and excitement of 50k subscribers! Watching it now 2 years later you’re at 378k! Congratulations !!
Regrettably late subscriber here, but listening to you "chat away about space" is amazing! I love all of your videos and as a huge space enthusiast, I love your position in the field and your take on things! :D
I love me some Dr. Becky. Smart, well spoken, fun, interesting, inspiring and beautiful! Don't every stop what you are doing.

Dr. Becky is bursting at the seams with enthusiasm, of course folk enjoy your videos.
Congratulations on your milestone! It is well deserved! 🎆
Congrats on 50k well deserved Dr. Becky Love the channel from across the pond
I like to listen to you because it is clear you have a passion for the subject.
Dear Dr..
This spot - your desk - is MUCH nicer than the corner/wall where you shoot the other videos..
It was no less than a life changer to watch this one..
Thanks for everything.
Your enthusiasm really inspires the rest of us Dr Becky. Especially during covid.
I love your enthusiasm. It'd be nice if more teachers had this. Keep up the good work Beck!
Congrats on hitting the milestone! The videos are greatly appreciated! 😊
It is the first time I heard that AGN's were your specialty. I would *love* to see a video that really goes into detail about how all the things interact. For instance, if you send a star directly towards a black hole, would the converging geodesics affect the pressure inside the star as it moves closer?
How does different particles interact with the different fields - are more electrons than protons ejected due to them having a lower ratio of mass to charge?
Does different particles align in different orbits to some degree, causing charge to build in bands around the black hole until the potential makes up for the difference, and does the rate at which things fall in change this behavior?
I have so many questions, and I imagine that getting a better understanding of the interactions around AGN's would also help my understanding of things like fusion reactors - I suspect that the plasma interactions have a significant influence in both.
There never been a better teacher then Dr Becky for Astronomy class . Specially people like me .
Thank you, for your efforts!
My advice is to make stuff you like, the subs will follow, don't worry about that.
You are awesome. I like watching your videos about the universe. They are very informative and interesting.
You are absolutely an epic woman on this Earth, thank you so much for sharing your years of research, wisdom and knowledge! It's kind of like youve done all the hard work, youve spent the endless sleepless nights studying and testing and researching, youve gained the degrees, lol, and we get the short to the point answers you've hunted for all your career. I just can't thank you enough, knowledge is power and I love learning everything I can about our world, this universe, I believe majority of intelligent humans love learning abou the universes most magical dimensions. I wish I could meet you in person and just pick your brain for hours and hours. Youve helped me explain things to my son in better detail than I alone was capable of,he's 4 and he asks me a billion questions everyday about the stars and space, you are my go to for all my answers, lol. He's scary brilliant and has remembered nearly everything I've explained to him, he's by passed me by a good 30yrs, I never even knew we were in the milky way galaxy, I know sad. My folks were both in college, most my childhood and scholarly, they were both professors in the arts. We never got into details about the stars. They do not teach enough about space in American public grade schools.
We love listening to you talk about space.
Congratulations on 50,000 + Love your videos "thanks"
Definitely finding evidence of life on a planet around another star will be world-changing. Can't wait for that moment. 😍

Hi Dr. Becky, and a shout out to Editing Becky (working hard to improve Dr. Becky with each episode). Congratulations on the 52k subscribers. As a trekkie(seen all the films and TV series, more than once), there's no shame in not having seen any of the Star Trek series. They're more people stories than science stories (as is true for most of popular Sci fi) . Of course analog to you enjoying Chris Pine, I enjoy watching you. Your way of explaining your field is just marvelous! The comparison Pikachu to Richu with Neutron star and a black mountain, simply brilliant! ❤️U👍
Congrats Dr.Becky , I enjoy and learn

Thanks for all of your excellent work!
Also, as per your identification that you have not yet had the opportunity to extensively watch a Star Trek series, if you eventually find that you have the opportunity to do so, I highly recommend starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Congrats on passing 50K fellow science nerds Becky! Wednesdays are always more interesting with your weekly Space science videos.
