What a wonderful chance to see how Ipswich looked 50 years ago. I moved here in 2000 and it's nice to see how much and how little has changed. Thanks for posting.

Alot has changed. Many wonderful buildings demolished. Too many mistakes and poor decisions.

Great to see Ipswich as it was when I was young. So little traffic. Thanks for posting it.

I was about fifteen at the time, I recall all the sights seen here as I cycled all over town, plus I had relatives all over. Interesting the lack of Heath Road Hospital as you drove past. The sheer lack of traffic in them days... !! A shame it is a mite cloudy, but well done you, a fascinating look at how it was, before it all went wrong... !!!

I was 10 in 1968 & recognise most of this - Grimwade & Son at 8:29 was where I went for new school uniform. I went to Everton School in Humber Doucy Lane & lived at 22, Fonnereau Road. (I hoped you were going to turn right at 10:14 & drive down Fonnereau Road).
The white building at 9:50 was a hospital, I was in there in 1975 after being knocked off my motorbike by a car at Sproughton crossroads!
    Brings back so many memories!

I remember most of the locations of what I saw here, as I frequented the town from nearby Melton throughout my 30 years. Interesting to see how the dockyard complex with its railway lines looked, which was something I never really saw. At 5:32, where the road veers to the left, it takes you toward the roundabout at Hawthorn Drive, right next to where my grandparents on my Dad's side lived at that time, and still did when they both died over 40 years later. My dad would have been 20 and already working (for a timber yard as I recalled him telling me), while their other son was only five/six when this was shot. Regards, Samuel Farris.

It's amazing seeing these sorts of things. It doesn't look much different from the 1960s now except now there's no businesses or english people and there's rubbish and graffiti everywhere and everyone is miserable.

Sadly quite a lot of what you see here just no longer exists, including the brutalist stuff at the bottom of Civic Drive down past where the AXA Building now is (which appears to be under construction in this clip). That, and the roads have been rerouted over the years.
I remember seeing something in the Star about expats in the US who used to live where Cardinal Park now is, when it was housing that would still have been there around this time. Mate of mine also lived in the flats on Fore Hamlet directly opposite the church (apparently built circa 2003) meanwhile his ex-girlfriend lived in one of the other buildings round the corner.
But interesting that the Bishops Hill flats (16:23) overlooking Holywells Park were there all that time ago. For some reason I assumed they were newer, although whole sections of the wall on the main road look to have been removed and the frontage opened up.

Half expecting to be following dad in his car, spooky to see civic drive under construction, and can remember it being developed, could've been getting off a bus and be in that film somewhere, would've been 10 years old.

That area has changed so much that I get a bit confused when the car heads up College Street towards where the Novotel roundabout now is. Looks like he makes a right turn up the bottom half of St. Peter's Street, on the section outside the church where the brick-paved pedestrian walkway now is. On making the turn he has a building on his left that no longer exists.

I grew up in Ipswich at that time it was a dump then and even worse dump now, apart from happy memories at my old school Westbourne and watching the Town in their glory days in the 60Ss, 70s and early 80s. So thx for reminding me.

Andy Frost Is the original quality of the cine any better than this rather jerky slowed down version? Just wondering as a friend of mine who has experience of transferring film to digital reckons he could get a better result.

This is a slowed down version (running at 10th of the speed) of a cine film taken in 1960. I think it's clear enough given the limitations of the technology used at the time.
