Awesome ollie!!! I believe New Zealand has some of the biggest stripe marlin in the world. I used to read about big game fishing off Bay of islands (?) Where record size ones were caught a long time ago! Beautiful video and nice clear water, just amazing!!! My good friend here in Hawaii, Wendell Ko, a world class and champion freedive spearfiherman, got a blue marlin off of the famous kona coast on the Big island of hawaii where I lived and fished for over 25 years. It weighed over 500 pounds!! There's a video of it too!! I've dove and done underwater cinematography from my boat before in huge biomass areas of just about everything from plankton to small bait fish and huge schools of skipjack tuna, then ono and mahi mahi, big 200+ pound yellowfin tuna and then massive Pacific Blue Marlin's!!! One time in particular I just had to get in the water to actually see it because it was just so much fish it was amazing! A few other boats were at a fish aggregation buoy off of a very remote part of the Big island with me and everyone was getting hooked up to huge ahi and it was glassy and calm so I went over the side wih my underwater camera and I was completely blown away!!! I had several huge blue marlin over 500 pounds swim right up to me, some at extreme high speed, and very aggressively circle around me!! I had witnessed some of the really big ones actually stun big ahi/ yellowfin tuna, over 100 pounds with their bills, and then grab them in their mouths and turn them around to swallow them whole, head first!!!! I was just too spooked after about 10 minutes and I had enough!!! Of course there were lots of sharks too!! I flagged my boat to come pick me up and quickly got in having looked these massive kings of the ocean in their eyes just realizing if one wants to spear me with it's bill and eat me there was absolutely nothing I could do about it!!! Actually the big blue marlin over about 300 pounds and up, are all females, so they are the Queens of the ocean!!! Guys were taking 5 gallon buckets and scooping up small little bait fish called nehu right off the side of their boats because they were just frothing at the surface in this bubbling white water trying not to get eaten!! I watched guys take a live aku/skipjack tuna and bridle it onto the hook and line and put it back into the water and instantly hook up to huge ahi's!!! But what really blew my mind was watching boats doing that and have a huge marlin take the live aku and hook up!! I literally watched 5 boats, one after the other doing that hook a huge marlin all over 500 pounds and then drift off away and fight it for an hour or much longer!!! It was a wide open bite!! I believe 2 marlin were caught that day that were close to or exceeded 1000 pounds!!! We were all commercial fisherman, and this is a very remote place that takes 2 days for me to fish to from kona!!! It was my favorite fishing spot on the island, but it's almost always windy and rough there. Its usually the commercial guys who spend so much time at sea that come across these kinds of incredible marine biomass situations that are rare to encounter!!! Those big marlin were feeding so aggressively, it really scared me and I was worried I was going to be attacked by one, so I got back in my boat just shaking and full of adrenaline!!! Really beautiful stripe marlin ollie! We have them in Hawaii but they rarely get bigger than about 130 pounds but they are excellent eating!!! A favorite of mine!! The Japanese call them naragi! Love your video's and adventure stories!

Marlin tastes AWESOME. Sailfish too. I ate both in restaurants in Costa Rica. But those were caught by commercial fisherman, I wouldn't kill one myself because I couldn't store it and don't need that much fish. A mahi or medium size tuna or something like that is enough for me. I caught yellowfin tuna in Costa Rica to sell with my commercial buddies in Pavones. 26 one day. I kept a couple and they sold the rest. I saw a marlin and some sails there but they never got pinned on any if our small lures.
