  • Ponniyin Selvan 2 starring Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala is a towering tale of ambition, tragedy, love, and greed. At stake is the crown of the Chola empire in 10th-century India. And where there is a throne, there must be blood. This film is a portrait of power, which we know is a Faustian bargain. It demands sacrifice - of lives, morals, and relationships.

Aishwarya Rai is one of the best actors of our Generation. The Hindi audience has always been weirdly cruel to her, from making fun of her lack of acting skills to making fun of her for gaining weight during her pregnancy and so much more.
It's time the audience gave her a break and stopped putting her under the microscope. The woman is in her 50s and she needs to be treated kindly.

My favorite scene was that of Ash’s mom and Prakash Raj (the King), the background score when she passed away in his arms, his grief was just intense. And the scene when Nandhini and Aditya Karikalan meet towards the end before he passes on. Brilliant cinema. And I agree, watching it in Tamil with subtitles is recommended over the dubbed versions.. I always watch content in the language they were shot in, those nuances make a huge difference when in the original language. Very memorable movie , loved it compared to the first part.

It was superb and brilliant in terms of performance. My concern is Jayam Ravi's performance getting missed out in the chaos. He plays the role of Arulmozhi Varman who is the actual Raja Raja Chozhan the great, a man of intelligence, mysticism and quiet valour. It is so unusual for the macho men in movies and Jayam Ravi captured the subtlety of this character in its entirety. My best wishes to him.

***Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 Tamil Movie Review***
No need of further introduction as in 2021, Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 created wonders at the box office. At the end of the 1st part, the film threw many questions to the audience. The people who read writer Kalki’s book was awaiting how Mani Ratnam had brought the same into the big screen & those who have not read was curious as they were waiting for the questions that came to their mind.
As actor Jayam Ravi who plays the titular role, said in PS 2 promotion that PS 1 was just a trailer, PS 2 is the movie, post watching the movie, I agree to his point.
PS 1 travels around the character building of each character. It was like the construction of the basement so that when we watch PS 2 it would have a concrete impact in the minds of the audience.
As a whole PS: 1 and 2 talks about the hatred, lost love, greed, vengeance, the dark political game which we quite frequently observe in our present lives.
Screenplay of Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan, Elango Kumaravel had given 100% justice to Kalki Krishnamurthy original script.
When take up the performances, the lead characters had given the top-notch performance. If in Part 1 if we could see the superlative performance of Trisha, in PS 2 it was Aishwarya who stolen the show. Her dual role as Nandini and Mandakini was outstanding. The vengeance, the anger of her lost love, the sorrow of Nandini on one hand whereas immense homage towards the Chola kingdom by Mandakini on the other, Aishwarya able to revamp herself into these characters well.
Chiyaan Vikram’s performance was another noteworthy as in this part his screen presence was more so we could see his magic more.
The scene where Vikram and Aishwarya meet and just express out themselves, that 10 minutes of that scene, Mani Ratnam sir direction, Ravi Varman Cinematography backed by Vikram - Aishwarya stellar performance, audience will feel that the lost love should be reunited. Epic scene in PS: part 2
ARR musical score escalates the intensity of the situation.
The climax shot wherein Jayam Ravi kneels down post the war victory, the BGM thereon gave a goosebumps moment.
Overall PS: Part 2 was a film which feels to be re watchable as it’s a movie which is made once in a lifetime.

I really wanted the movie to work for me. I really wanted it to be the magic spell it supposedly was. But here are a few points which made me feel it could have been tweaked just a little more:
    1. It is a 70 year old novel- and the grammar of a book is different to the grammar of screen. Certain things worked better back then- like the humour between the picaresque hero and the goons chasing than today. You cannot tell me they are brutal warriors one moment and then use them for comedy the next- like in that cave scene or where the Pandyas meet Vanthiyadeva in boats.
    2. The scenes were abrupt. And not clear to many who did not read the books- the chronology of events leading to that massive scene in Kadambur palace were not at all consistent with what the characters and their mentality. It is not at all clear in the first place what happens there in the end. Even the battle or the last scene (which is supposed to be the last frame relating to the crown, the one to remember this movie by is not as iconic as it could have been.
Have always been a fan of Mani Ratnam's work. Kannathil Muthammittal to even Chekka Chivantha Vanam (love that)- but somehow this one feels like it could have been better.

Karikalan was a real person and a great warrior king, but Nandini was a fictional character created by the author Kalki for the sake of his novel....Kalki wouldn't have clearly written how Karikalan was killed, but in the movie its shown as Karikalan deceived by his love interest Nandini and get killed, which is completely nonsense....Personally didn't like how Mani handled the final portion of the story and ARR non nativity music is completely a let down.....Actual Tamil Cholas were superior and greater than Mani's version

I would say this movie had enough content for 2 more movies but when compressed into one... it ignored too much to come to a hurried end. As someone who read the books and watching the film.... I felt that the acting was spectacular and mani ratnam gave his unique touch to staging the scenes too but in the end when the plot was made more linear to become a movie adaptation it falls just short of perfection in my mind. Many plot points were ignored taking away the charm of some of these characters and the complexity woven into the character dynamics.

It's extremely difficult to do PS as a web series with the present cast and crew and the budget will sky rocket. Bringing this novel to life in itself is the biggest challenge and I'm positive no other director other than maniratnam can pull it off this much within such a short period and given budget.

Thanks for Giving Reviews In English For Those Who Enjoy Bollywood & Indian Movies But Do Not Speak Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, etc...
I'm not familiar with history of this movie...
    Only saw #2...
I really liked love story that was blossoming in beginning of movie with Nandini the supposedly orphan girl & Aditha Karikalan who Honestly, Sincerely & Completely Falls In Love With Her...
When Aditha put her on his horse & also brought her before queen I thought Nandini would be completely loyal, devoted, committed & wait for Aditha too Return...
The Rest of Movie I Endured Trying To Understand What Was Going On & Why Nandini Had Changed...
She Reveals Her True Intentions & Personality & Character In What She Finally Says To Aditha...
I Presume This Movie Wasn't Well Received Nor Accepted By Indians as All Theaters & Movie Show Times & Theaters Were Empty or few people 2 to 6 people in theaters where capacity ranged from 75 to possibly 500 & screens & sound were digital, dolby & iMAX...
Maybe attendance will pic up over weekend...
    Didn't Enjoy Movie...
I Forced Myself To Watch It Hoping Nandini Would Return To The Pure & Innocent Teenager She Was In Beginning of Movie...
The Grandeur of Castles, Inside & Out, Costumes Was Good...
What Did Like About Movie Are Characters Who Not Only Pledged Their Loyalty...
But Maintained Their Loyalty Even In Face of Death...

I watched PS2 with family yesterday. I had watched PS1 on Amazon Prime earlier. The kids were excited and I just accompanied them. They liked PS1. The damage to my pocket was seven movie tickets, 3 big buckets of popcorn, 3 big diet soda cups and 2 bottles of water, all of which I paid for at the movie theater. The movie bears no semblance to reality. Chola history and grandeur was heavily hyped up. I laughed seeing the moresadam(yogurt with rice in Tamil) eaters wage heavy battle. The intrigue is believable(all the cholas needed for that was a full meal- dosa, idli, and vadai with coconut chutney for breakfast, and rice with sambar and maybe beans or potato sabji, then rice with rasam and rice with yogurt and lemon pickle for lunch and dinner). Aishwarya Rai is way past her best. VIkram and Karthi were ok. Trisha did not have much of a role in PS2. Why Indian audiences are not tired of 1990s bollywood heros and women-now in their 50s and 60s with kids and grandkids, is a big mystery. The special effects were ok but Maniratnam and A R Rehman don't produce the sparks any more. The movie was long and there was no rest room break so we had to miss scenes. It was just another movie in the end.
I think in the early 1970s there was a movie called 'raja raja cholan' with big ads taken out in 'the hindu' to promote the movie. I might try to watch it,if i can find it.
