    The brown wax as it is called is really an aluminum soap with a little ceresine wax to keep the moisture from attacking it. I make these blanks based on research by Thomas Edison's Chemist Jonas Aylsworth. the equipment I used to process is all equipment made by Thomas A Edison laboratory Orange N.J, the ending machines, and shaving machine. The molds are based on Edison molds from the 1890s.

    HOLY SH*T ... this is absolutely amazing !!! The sound that comes out of this machine makes me shiver - it really sounds like an original period recording of the 20s ... gives me "goose pimples" everytime I watch it (just to use a good old Bix tune´s name!).
    I cannot praise your work enough !! To see and hear the difference between a life performance and an early accoustic recording is a great experience for an old 78rpm-collector (and Bix-fan). Thanks to you all (music and technicians) many many times !!!

    I hope we can record again, I have a new recording head, that is one of Edison's factory studio recorders, it is very sensitive, and much higher quality.

      If you record again, I wouldn't place the clarinet at the same distance to the horn as the brasses. You can hardly hear it on the recording. Even with modern microphones, you have to put them much closer to achieve balance. Accounts of how this was done with acoustic equipment, describes the clarinets being "practically inside the horn".The piano is facing away from the horn, and you can't hear that either. Turning it sideways and placing the rim of it close to the horn could be a solution. The string bass basically has no chance of being captured by this type, you need a tuba or a bass sax.

      certainly, the clarinet is rather hard to record, so will have it closer next time, it should be at the edge of the horn.

    Fascinating and the band played very sweetly. Play back suffered in reproducing the sound but we get the idea.

    Well that's the coolest thing I'll ever see. I can die happy now. I could tell even with modern sound quality you had the feel of the 1920's, which is not easy. The playback was spectacular. Coming from someone who is cosmically adhered to 1920's jazz, you did a phenomenal job.

    Thanks for this. It's interesting to compare the modern recording made as the musicians were playing with the cylinder. Ironically, there's no evidence Bix himself ever recorded on a cylinder. The use of just a cymbal instead of a full drum kit was because the vibrations of drums, especially bass drums, could throw off the record needle and ruin a master. King Oliver's great Creole Band records of 1923-24 were made with the drummer, Warren "Baby" Dodds, restricted to snare drum, cymbal and wood blocks. Not until Gene Krupa's first recording session in Chicago, 1927 with McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans was a full drum set put on records.

    • @thenorthamericanphonograph1039
      @thenorthamericanphonograph1039 4 года назад +1

      Drums do record on cylinders, the playback of them is difficult with an acoustical reproducer. I recorded Slick Rick at Madison Square Garden, and the bass was chest-pounding, when played back with a magnetic cartridge, but sounded like thuds with a horn (you could hear it in listening tubes.) By 1927, electrical recording and playback using matched acoustical impedance with the orthophonic acoustical system.

      I make the wax blank cylinders, and the one used is one I created, they are made of aluminum soap, with a ceresine wax, same material used to make original blank Edison cylinders.

    Art Howard: Maybe part of what you write: This group plays "Margie"
    like every Dixieland Band did and does since 1945 in key of "F".
    Bix' s Margie was in the key of "Eb". Big difference in atmosphere.

    • @luvmyrecords
      @luvmyrecords 6 лет назад +1

      I always found it interesting that Bix and his Gang did it in Eb; the ODJB, Bix's first model, did it in G The original published key is F, and I have at least one record from the early '20s in F. Society leaders tended to play the published keys, though in NYC, C major was often brought up to Db (a veteran leader from the 1950s once jokingly told me, "C major is the 516 key," referring to the Long Island area code), for example, and sometimes, it was just a matter of preference, or to allow for a smoother modulation to the tune. It was not necessarily to accomodate a vocalist; the published keys often were the "male" keys, but notice on old dance band records, there often is a modulation for the vocalist. Another old- time society player-leader once told me, also jokingly, "You can tell how old a guy is by what keys he plays tunes in!" As an aside, Bix had perfect pitch, and would have been affected by the "atmosphere" of key (as you are ☺), which would have dictated his choices. That assumes his infamous apathy towards details wasn't at play!
