Did it ever occur to you to check your tyre after fixing a flat or changing tyres? I never knew I had to check this, but now I almost always have this issue :( I believe it's a problem with my rims! Want another maintenance video? Watch this on waxing your chain: ruclips.net/video/QuyW75Aq9LU/видео.html
Fixed it! In 45 years of cycling I've never had this issue of a "bumpy" tyre. Turns out it wasn't seating properly and gently massaging it as I put it back on fixed the issue. Thank you!
Thanks! This worked as follows: 1. Drain air 2. Squeeze tire sides toward middle of wheel (do this completely, not just the part that won’t seat) 3. Spray soapy water all along inside wall of wheel 4. Quickly pump air into tire until heard pops of sidewall line on tire snapping out of the wheel (Vitoria has the line on the sidewall, one other gravel tire brand also has this line, another brand didn’t, fyi)
Glad it helped! What rims do you have? Since I've made this video, I've tried another tyre on and have had to do it for that too - I think my basic Syncros rims are the problem here; if my tyres get fully flat for whatever reason, 8 times out of 10, I'd have to do this to get them correctly seated.
@@TheIndianCyclist I have triban rims... I had a puncture while riding a week ago, changed the tube in very poor light. Rode the bike all bouncy for 1 km and then the tire went flat, tried pumping her up... No go. Had to call my family to come pick me up since walking wearing spd cleats is a serious no no. Struggled to get the seating right till I stumbled upon your video.
I seldom puncture on the road - mostly they are overnight, slow punctures that I discover before going out for a ride. A few weeks ago I did have to change a tube on the road and as expected, the tyre didn't seat properly. Ride home was definitely irritating, especially since it was the front wheel and I could "see" (and feel) the bump. Not something you can even attempt to redo when you're using a hand pump :D
@@daveyzane1192 the bead of the tire is not able to slide into place inside the wheel rim coz of the friction... The soapy water is reducing that friction and helping the bead to slide into place.
I've been cycling since the early '80s and never had the issue where a little overpressure wouldn't work. However, I put a Vittoria tire on a carbon aero rim, and it just would not seat. I tried the tank for tubeless tires, and it didn't work. Soapy water with overpressure worked. The tire was tough to mount and remove since it is so tight, and I found that was the issue. The bead sits down in the bed of the rim because it's tight and can't move. Thanks for the tip.
I dont know how to thank you enough after fixing a continental contact plus 700x32 wire bead i was thinking to return those crazy difficult to seat beads after watching a lot of you tube and two days of frustration, but i did one last thing that you mention and that was to try a larger inner tube, I put the older 700x35/43c inner tube because I changed from a 35 to a 32 tire too and “bingo” Im so happy and can’t thank you enough, have a great day.
Armando - I'm so glad the video helped! You're one of the first who has reported success with the tube technique. In my video, I did not say to put a larger tube, I said, "correctly sized" tube. The fact that you put a larger tube and it actually worked is a new strategy - thank you for sharing it! Do share these videos with like- minded friends, I'd appreciate that very much. Cheers!
Pretty much worked like a charm for a bead that dipped into the TL rim. Through a combination of just soap (not soapy water), massaging the tire from the valve to the rest and overinflating, i finally got that PONG sound (i was after the tire was going to blow up at that point)
Gotcha - be a bit careful with that because we want to minimize reaction with the tyre, which is why you dilute it. A lot of variables in the mix like type of soap used, tyre compound, amount of soap etc. of course, so it might not have any effect at all, but something to keep in mind.
The over inflating worked for me, as the pressure got close to the maximum amount I saw the dipped part slightly raise, so I gave it a few more pumps and the bead popped, now the horrible bump is gone and I have a smooth ride
You sir are amazing. The soap trick helped. Also tried it with starting the seating from opposite side of the nozzle - that way the issue remains near the nozzle and since it will get filled up first, it helps..
Am so gald it helped. Seating from the side opposite the valve is generally recommended while seating tyres too, though some people prefer doing the exact opposite!
I don't even have a stubborn tyre... yet. It's only a matter of time, so good to know. The last ones i bought look a little sus but i haven't put them on yet.
Ah man, where was this video when I needed it last year 😅 Good stuff, man! I've tried the massage technique and check the tube. The soap thingy is an epic idea. Waiting for your next video *cough* lighthouse *cough* 🤪
I first heard about it when I was having a hard time trying to get a trainer tyre on, during lockdown #2 - almost gave up and then a couple of local stores recommended it. 50% of the time, I need to spot apply as well, but so happy it works!
I always had the same problem with my bike, a Sprint Whisper, I believe I tried 4 or 5 different types of tires along the years, sometimes I think I had luck, the tire seats properly after the first or second inflate..but now, with my new pair of tires (Maxxis Detonator 700x23C), the problem persist and it is absolutelly annoying..:/...I tried soap, pressure, massage...nothing seems to work...or maybe I am not quite patient? I'm thinking of inflating the tires to arround 150 PSI, wich is much more than the admissible limit. Great video anyway!
What a co-incidence, I'm using exactly that tyre on my front wheel - Maxxis Detonator 700x23c. I would still blame the rim and not the tyre, though I guess some really may be harder than others. Sometimes I get lucky with soap - it's a one shot thing. But very recently, I had a pretty hard time and I had to apply the soap 3-4 times before it finally seated right. Make sure the soap solution is not too dilute, is one tip I can share, and otherwise, be ready to deflate just enough to brush soap into the offending area and then pump it up from there. I must say 150 PSI is crazy! I start getting worried at 110 :D Good luck!
@@TheIndianCyclist Thanks for the good wishes and advices. Last type of tyres I used was Continental Ultra 700x23, I had not so many problems like with the Maxxis, wich makes me think that is not the rim the problem. Thanks to your video and advices, I will try to be more patient, and maybe I will apply the soap (maybe pure liquid soap) 3-4 times as well, until the job is done. :) Cheers!
Hey man! Just wanna thank you for helping me fix this annoyance!! But do i have to worry abt the soap water being inside the wheel, esp mine are carbon wheels?
Glad the video helped! I tried looking for carbon wheels but found nothing specific I'm afraid. If you didn't use a lot of water and a light solution, I think it should be fine ... you definitely should not have water sloshing around in the wheel (just saying! )

@@TheIndianCyclist after reinflating like 10 times it finally worked, now lets hope i dont get a flat in a long time because hell i dont want to do this again soon
All I can say is soapy water and over-inflation might do the trick. For particularly stubborn tyres - I unfortunately was forced to take them into my bike store. There they used soapy water and overinflated with a compressor. Perhaps this is something I could have done at home, but I must admit I was too scared to overinflate too much, while they are experts and know what the tyre / tube can handle. These were 2.25" MTB tyres that just wouldn't seat evenly despite dozens of attempts.
Dude, thanks for the short and simple video. I went from ready to return the wheels to having working wheels. What my hands thought was 40PSI, was actually 15PSI and the tire was wonky from lack of air 🤣
