In Episode 2 of "We Might Not Make It", Hursh (co-founder & CTO of The Browser Company), breaks down why we believe memory & agents will be the key to unlocking reliability in consumer AI products and pulls back the curtain on some of our thinking. It's going to be a big 12 months for The Browser Company, we just hope we make it.

One important thing about memory for me is that it shouldn’t over index when I go down a rabbit hole. Yes that one time I researched speakers for 3 hours should be kept in mind but most of the time I don’t care about speakers that much. RUclips does a bad job with this with its recommended feed

Please address privacy in an upcoming episode! AI thrives on more and more data (1:35) but The Browser Company has yet to make privacy-related promises to your users. How can users be assured that The Browser Company will not change the Privacy Policy to include collection of user data, data not being stored on the user's device, or "end-to-end" encryption that is still readable by Arc?
I really want to see Arc do well. But privacy comes first, and frankly, most of us switched to Arc because its was a groovy browser before/despite the AI. In fact, if AI costs force Arc to become a paid product, PLEASE provide a free-plan without the AI features. Thanks!
Just my thoughts. Wish you all the best.

I like this video series and how you make your decisions more transparent with it. However there's one thing missing so far in your decision making: user privacy! How do you make sure that all the data points you're getting and using for making the best AI for us users doesn't end up in profiles of every user in the hands of marketing, advertising and other firms as well as governments or even criminals. The only way to make sure would be to train the AI locally on every users device and keep the data there which has other implications like CPU usage for the user, but also monetization for you, I guess? I'd really like to see those points adressed in one of the next episodes.

    • @hurshagrawal7990
      @hurshagrawal7990 Месяц назад +19

This is fantastic feedback, and something we should discuss more in these videos. We take user privacy very seriously (it was one of the reasons we started this company! We felt like Chrome and most browsers' business models didn't support privacy as a core tenet).
Our memory system is designed to run locally, and our sync mechanism is end-to-end encrypted so we can't actually see any of your data even when syncing it.
LLM calls are a bit more tricky. We don't track or keep any data from any AI processing, and have signed contracts with AI API providers that also ensure they have a zero data collection policy for our API calls. This isn't enough for us though- we're looking into ways we can ensure an even higher level of privacy by moving those LLM calls into our own infrastructure so we can ensure privacy and security with absolute certainty.
Eventually though, we really want to lean into local, on-device LLMs that run on your laptop. Local LLMs are also interesting to us because they bring out costs down quite a bit, so we're pretty incentivized to move quickly here. As you mentioned though, local LLMs aren't quite there yet in terms of performance and memory usage. They use a TON of CPU/memory and don't perform that well. We're hoping this will change towards the end of the year and through 2025.

A third concern that I feel should be HIGHLY prioritized is privacy and trust. If you are going to build in depth, highly detailed memory of me and my browsing habits and desires, how can I trust you with all that information? There is sense in which this AI will know more about me than I know about me. It makes me very nervous to put that into just anyone's hands. I really chose Arc because of its ultimate craft, even in the details, the effort that you all pour into building the interface and the user experience itself is what makes me use it even though it's not available for my entire setup (iPhone, Macbook, iPad and Android).
I must admit, it's a little bit off seeing Arc going full AI - looking from the perspective that I chose Arc because of its keen design, and I imagine that from many others too.
At the same time that it makes total sense: "We Might Not Make It"!
The general *impression* is that almost all of the team is focused on building the AI features, and the other parts of the browser, that should be as much as important, will probably not be getting a slice of this effort. It seems that all of the "craft" poured into the "normal" features of a browser will also slowly fade away, as it will not be a priority in face of the new AI related features and enhancements.
In the other hand, it's been really nice seeing how you're addressing and solving this "AI race"!
By the way, although it really sounds like a rant, it's not an Arc-specific rant.
I myself would be willing to pay to NOT have a single word mentioning "AI" in any of the apps I use, but comparing to what I inescapably see from other companies, you all are killing it!

I recommend that TBC remain a consumer of AI tech and adapt it to the "web exploration" task. A third cornerstone challenge will likely be cost. Memory in LLMs, for example, isn't cheap. Quite the opposite. How will browser users pay? Will they pay? Regardless, your pivots are exciting, and your videos are top-shelf genre pieces! Good luck. EDIT: As others have identified, privacy is a fourth pillar.

    1. Can the users' data be kept locally on devices? Can models run locally or deal with the data in a privacy respectful manner?
    2. Would it be possible to review which data is stored? Would be cool to manage your data and actions just like you can manage your browser history.

To Arc fans watching this video: *You are the one being Browsed.*
"A browser that browses for you" is a cute way of saying, a browser that browses You.
"Arc might not make it if it can't build a sophisticated shadow profile of the person using it"??...
I hope you don't make it.
I don't want my browser to "understand" me at all. I wish there were a browser that was as well designed as Arc but one-time payment, with security in mind.

Memory, in this context, is synonymous with privacy. If there's a blindspot in how you're talking about memory it's answering whether you have the resources to safely manage that amount of user data. Maybe competitors in the space just recognise the responsibility and liability here? We might trust you do not intend to misuse our data but A: what if you get a data breach? B: what if you get bought out? If you see memory as this integral, these are the questions you should be answering at the top of the discussion. Probably the only PR misstep I have seen from TBC is skimming over this so casually.

ok but context window is like RAM or short term memory for humans. dont you think it would be good to basically train an own model for everyone so its like it learned all the stuff from you and rememberes it well. it seems a bit overkill to have a separate trained model for everyone as curremt hardware cant run a big model but in the future i guess we'll have the respurces. or maybe we'll have completely different ai architecture by then

The browser that browses for you feels like a tangent to the collaborative browser ideas you'd been breaking ground in. I think building the Al features on top of the larger collaborative framework it seemed you were triangulating before would be a more powerful and better spend of resources. AI agents should augment and amplify the way we act as agents for and with other people in day to day life, not replace human agency. It really feels like you're losing your own plot here with this pivot. You're doing innovative stuff, but i think you had the right framework before. Build browser tools that brings us closer to each other and each other's content rather than adding more machinery between us. The AI agents should live beside us rather than between us (and each other's content. Why even build web sites then? ) Avoid the browser that browses. Get us to a browser that bridges.
This series is actually making me kinda sad. I'm still rooting for y'all, but it sounds like you've been seduced into serving us tech instead of making tech that serves us. And repackaging low hanging generative llm functionality is so uninspring, even if it feels like magic. If Google can do what you're doing, you might be doing the wrong thing.
You know what the big players can't replicate? Relationships between people. Network effects tied to liberatory workflows. Every single thing I've seen of the past few videos, even if you deliver them first they're so low hanging technically that you have no first move advantage. You're just doing cheap R&D for the big players. Do what they can't do because it empowers your users to interact with the web as a social web in ways that will undermine their own business models. AI can fit beautifully within that foundation, but the other way around is gonna burn so much of your time, money, and I suspect, excitement outside of the tech bubble.
Yeah.. this is making me sad.
It's also making me sad that Mozilla seems to be headed along a similar path.

I know in the tech world, AI is the main way to get VC funding. But, by already launching so many Arc Max and Arc Search AI features, without 100% reliability, it’s turned off so many users. Just like your analogies, it’s like a calculator that’s sometimes wrong: nobody will trust that calculator *brand* anymore. Think about the impressions you’re giving your users. AI can’t be the primary selling feature if it’s also sometimes totally broken. Iterate, sure, but don’t make it the key focus because normal users can’t keep giving chances. You’re setting us up to give up on AI. Remember that everyone loving Arc Max today is someone who is OK with a calculator that’s sometimes wrong.
