    The ~7/8 scale part is interesting. I did some work on the broad gauge trackwork at Didcot and during the construction of the Iron Duke replica attended a lecture there by Tony Hall-Patch during which he said that they had considered constructing the loco and carriages to 7/8 scale but due to the broad gauge track at Didcot becoming available they had decided to build it full size.

    Barnet Fair is one of the traditional Gypsy fairs - one year I was in the vicinity and went and saw it. Offers were made (sight unseen) for my horse.

    Draining engines in the winter to prevent frost damage is a standard procedure. If it's being used, you have to keep a banked fire in it to keep it warm.
    I wonder with those U flues, how difficult they are to clean the soot out. An access door would be useful.

    Could you do a video about at what point do you fully retire an engine and potentially make a replica?

      I would suspect they take the condition of the iron/steel boiler into serious consideration, as the pressure of 50 PSI is still a danger if a seam were to break.
      It is part of the reason military museum ships have a clause of not having pressure in the steam pipes, ever!

    I was watching an American steam video and they didn't have fusible plugs in the firebox. They had a low water alarm which I thought was incredibly dangerous for a low water alarm doesn't stop the boiler from exploding it just tells you that the water in the boiler is low. There have been modern US articulated type engines where the boiler has exploded. Here in Australia we follow British practice and all our steam locos have fusible plugs in the firebox. In the 19th century boiler explosions were common in Britain especially where salter safety valves were used at they could be screwed down but not here in Australia for there's only references to one at Wentworth Falls in NSW which is just up the road from me when an E 17 0-6-0's boiler exploded in 1881.

      @anthonycoulls7301 Год назад +1

      Yes, the tenders for Rainhill were all constructed in Liverpool and were alike. That from memory, no doubt someone will tell me that I'm wrong

    50 psi working pressure is quite remarkable for a steam boiler of the early 19th century. That's more than three times standard atmospheric pressure pushing out at all sides.

    Wait, what? I never heard of the rain Hill trials as being anything other than standard gauge? Was sans pariel broad gauge or is it just beyond modern width requirements with the cylinders?

    If you’re doing another Q&A video National Railway Museum here’s my question when did the original stevenson’s rocket become the part the national collection and why is it no longer running under it’s own power

    • @Aeonterbor
      @Aeonterbor Год назад +3

      Rocket can't run under it's own power as a good chunk of original parts have been lost to time, and to get it into running condition you'd have to remove most of whatever mechanical parts are left. Also modern safety standards might not allow it to run.
