As a student attending this school, I have to say that when you walk past the dance room when they practice, you can't help but just stare because even them practicing is so mesmerizing

Very clever and rather well-done. However, two questions arise: 1. How did they manage to find the money for this production? Most schools can't provide funds for the art department/arts department to produce anything like this. 2. Where did they find the time to practice and keep up with their studies?
Hi! Great questions! 1. We do not get any money from the school or district! We have to raise everything ourselves. The kids do HOURS of fundraising outside of school to be able to have costumes and props. We do a lot of it over the summer and some throughout the school year. The prop in this dance is made out of cardboard boxes. It is beautiful from far away, but up close it is two seconds from falling a part! We are really scrappy when we come to making things look good for cheap. A lot of things are borrowed or from the Dollar Tree. It is definitely one of the most challenging parts of the job- building a program with no money! 2. Dance is a Fine Arts credit at our school. So they kids take it as a class during the day as a credit (elective). They practice everyday in class and then on Saturdays as well. They are able to fit it in this way, and keep their expected GPA of 3.0 which is required to be able to perform on the team. Great questions! Thank you!

ThePac Walden Grove--Thank you for your gracious, comprehensive, and courteous reply. In my high school days (more decades ago than I'd like to admit), these were called extra-curricular activities. There was no credit for them and one's grades had to be kept up or you were dropped from the rosters of the activities until the next report card reporting period--provided you got your grades up. Parent support groups and the participants raised as much money as they could with sales and annual carnivals and other special events. There was NEVER any money in the district's budget for art or music and the only dance we got was what our gym teachers (not P. E. teachers back then) could provide for us. Even the sports teams--who got the lion's share of extra-curricular funding--still needed support from their parent group fundraisers. I myself taught for longer than I cared to admit and whatever art we did was paid for out of my salary. Bravo to your school for a creative and delightful interpretation of L. Frank Baum's story.
Med Men Kristi Lopez. She was one of the back up dancers for Madonna I believe, which is mainly why the schools dance program is thriving.

Wild when things go wrong but the performers can handle it! My sister was in a fast-moving multi-song routine where the chorus lineup started in high heels and then would switch to tap shoes for the next part. She had a costume problem and couldn't change the shoes in time so she ran out there for the next segment and faked tap-dancing in 5-inch heels through a whole song
I can’t stop watching this!!! It is so freaking creative!! Do you even see how the gym is decorated?! Behind the student section on the right it says “Toto we are not freshman anymore”!!! And on the right side of the gym it says “there’s no place like Walden”... OMG yes!
Yes! I am glad you appreciate all the hard work! We have an amazing student council who really takes our themes to the next level! We are lucky to work with them.

This assembly was weeks ago and it's still blowing up, I'm so proud to say that I go here. Quincy slays in this (like always) and the entire Pac is so talented. I'm also proud to say that the wicked witch is my film teacher😂 can't wait to see what the next few years brings to my incredible high school❤

ThePac Walden Grove I always think think these performances are amazing but I can imagine for the kids in back may not be thrilled because they have both scenery in the way of part of the view and they can’t see anything but the dancers backsides. I think only facing one way isn’t taking full advantage of your space and being fully aware of your entire audience. I think it may be the only thing holding you all back

I'm from Kansas and as much as we get tired of stale references to the Wizard of Oz, this is amazing. These kids are amazingly talented and the dancing is incredible. The school and it's students are lucky to have this team.

Ava thanks for the update. I was wondering how they were doing. Funny thing is, this High School is about 30 minutes away from my home in Tucson. They did an awesome job and the song choices are perfect for each character they are "emphasizing" They totally killed it with "The Wiz!"

After 2 kids and 6 grandkids, I've seen a whole lot of high school performances and this one is just stupendous!! Left my mouth hanging open. The dancers are so good and spot on. The choreography is imaginative, interesting and varied. Costumes, sets and music excellent. It's altogether just WOW!!

I just came across this channel and I,literally, cannot get over this. How have I never heard of this group before?! Every student, and WITHOUT QUESTION, the choreographers and music team, deserve HUGE props for this production. I would pay big bucks to watch a show like this. I just watched the Pixar video from these guys and just got finished watching this and ohhh boy they are talented. The choreography is good, they are so in sync with each other and the costumes are great. They are just high school students but I would pay money to see this. Good stuff guys, keep up the hard work!

I just smile for 6 minutes straight! So creative, tasteful, and talented!! I am so impressed with how this was done. Most of the time you see these dance teams scantily clothed. Their routines bordering on being a strip tease and leaving the onlookers with an almost embarrassed feeling. All these other teams out there should watch and learn from you all!!!!! Amazing!! Please perform this at a competition! I've lived in AZ my entire life and never heard of this HS, this performance will definitely get your names out there! I'm glad to see these kids doing what they love while being extremely creative versus trying to be sexy and inappropriate for their age. Loved it!
We do the Arizona State Cheer/Pom competition every year- the hip hop division! Maybe we will look into a dance competition this year :)

Wow this is one of the best dances i've ever seen! Always coming back to this video, i could watch it a thousand times in a row. The Choreo itself, the choices of the songs and how they are remixed, the "story telling", the outfits and equipments, everything is perfection and (for me) on the highest level! I'm a 57-year-old male who appreciates that there are fans for all areas of music, and that we aren't all going to agree. Some people have no use for hip-hop. I don't agree. It's the music a great majority of young people appreciate. I'm not a fan of industrial metal, but others are. So, who am I to criticize varying tastes in music. It adds diversity to the spectrum. The music selections were perfectly suited to engage the energy of the students at the assembly. Job well done. And for those folks who don't like hip-hop, ask high school history teachers throughout this country how the Broadway musical, "Hamilton," has engaged students in learning and what dividends have been realized. Kudos.
Being privileged to work within my city's large local theater community and seeing the wide array of talent that plays out in musicals, comedies, dramas and tragedies on both high school, college and community stages throughout the year-and knowing how much work goes into a six-week rehearsal schedule for a show that will run four weeks-my hat is off to the coach and these talented students who pulled this off with a two-and-a-half-week turnaround from conception to execution. I know how many hours went into those 17 days because my friends are dance teachers and choreographers. Again, kudos.
For the haters and those who have left negative comments, think about what you are saying. Seriously. These students need to be encouraged. This is a good thing. This is something that will stay with them long after they graduate and may even play into the next part of their journey after high school academically or professionally.
By the counter above on November 27, this video has received 2.5-plus million views, so it obviously is making an impact.
(To the coach / choreographer: You are nurturing amazing talent. I like the way you took the criticism below with a gladsome heart. Now, a question: is there any way to list all the music that was used? I've seen several comments asking for this.)

It’s amazing how they use the black and white at the start, because the original Wizard of Oz movie was one of the first to ever have colour that then started in the middle of the movie.
