Probably some of the most informative information for our select species. Well done Mark so glad you don't go down the route of some RUclipsrs. No silly gimmicks no stupid bait sponsorship just good straight forward tips delivered in a style that's made for camera. Well done on your subscribers.
Thank you Clive, Clive from the BFW forums isn't it? I did have a bait sponsorship, but in the end wanted to give an honest appraisal and use the baits that I'm happy to use and pass on to others, if I can be of help I try to. Thanks for taking time to drop by and post a comment, I really appreciate it a lot.
I've said before, your style is Wilson-esk and John was my friend. You still get pleasure from small fish, and glory in the beast that come along from time to time. I still think you will need a cushion for the piles your going to get in middle age from sitting on the ground Ha! Ha! You know the one old people use like a polo mint with a hole in the middle! HA! I'm in the shed making bobbers from the 100 Champagne corks I recently brought buddy. Great work as always Mark.
The reason your channel is growing is because you are a genuine down to earth top quality bloke full of useful knowledge and we can all see it. Another entertaining educational video. Im fishing similar to you in a way but I use a heavy tungsten bead on the line stop coated in putty unless still water - then I leave the putty off and let the tugsten bead do its thing. If its a fixed lead I still use the tungsten bead, I just really like them. I pretty much always use a standard back lead just dropped off the bank which leads me to my question; I notice you didnt advocate the standard back lead, would you go one further and advise against them or is it just personal preference? Many thanks your always a help. - Lee Kenny
Thanks Lee, glad you enjoyed it mate. That is very similar to myself with the tungsten putty. Regarding back leads I must admit that I have on occasion used the standard clip on variety and really it is just a personal preference of mine to prefer using the ones I describe in the video mate.
Thank you so much for the kind appraisal, really have been enjoying the filming this season so far and the frankly bewildering amount of positive input, thank you too.
Why thanks Nick, it is always nice to know people are enjoying the videos, although at times some videos can be a bit shorter than I would like for viewers, so it is nice to be able in these next couple of videos to give you chaps a longer viewing period of the swims I fish and such, also helps having an extra battery or two for the action camera now thankfully.
Very nice video and very interesting little tips Mark. Small things sometimes make the difference between catching and not catching. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Thomas, you're most welcome. I don't really use anything that technical really, just reliable and mechanically sound. You're right though, the small details can make a large difference at times. Thanks mate.
Well done Mark. Three barbel in three trips on a hard water like the Loddon is good going. You prepare well, have good sound rigs, strong tackle and you deserve your success. I look forward to seeing an actual ' take ' sometime.
Thanks Harry, I am pretty happy to say the least with the last few trips and believe me I would dearly love to get a take on film for you chaps, the previous video to this I actually had to turn my action camera off for a couple of minutes and that was typically when the pin spun into action. Not so easy for me to manage to capture the moment at night time as it would mean having the camera light shining on or near the water, which may well kill the chance of a bite off.
You need to be on TV Mark. The most informative proffesional fishing video's on the web without a shadow of doubt ! Always a joy to watch , its as if we are there with you Brilliant ;))
Well thank you Stuart, that is kind of you, although I think most tv companies and channels prefer more over the top and dare I say in your face style of fishing shows than what mine would be like.
Once again another great video mate... crap on the TV, flicked over to RUclips and well pleased to see another instalment of your angling adventures... lovely barbel. 👏👏👏👏👏
I'm very much the same Barry, love watching the fishing channels on youtube, as we never seem to get a really good program for us anglers these days on television either. Thank you so much for the kind words mate.
Well Mark another top video which I thourghly enjoyed ,I love the rig info & all the baiting strategy ,I just enjoy it all ! When & if I manage a barbel from my very lightly stocked river you will certainly deserve some credit keep it up Ian
Great video and cracking barbel Mark. Finding it hard on the Tees myself fished approximately 20 sessions and only hooking one fish this season and losing it. will carry on and hopefully get one before our first frosts. Tight lines Paul.
Thanks Paul and at the same time sorry to hear how tough the Tees is fishing, I hope it comes good for you. Hard to believe we are speeding our way towards Christmas really isn't it.
Hello Tamas and thank you too for watching the video and taking time to post a comment my friend. I'm sure one day you might fish it and I'm pretty certain that you would enjoy it a lot, it's a beautiful little river.
Another decent upload. I'm looking to get out on the search for a barbel its a fish I've never caught along with a river carp on the Thames by me just outside oxford. Theres got to be some but only one way to find out!!
Thanks Hayze, yes there certainly is Barbel around the oxfordshire sections of the Thames, I'd recommend perhaps venturing out towards Wallingford or Culham.
Another great video Mark. I find these massively useful as I fish similar waters to you around Berkshire and a lot of what you say matches my experience, often including when you're catching and when you're not. That said, you're getting way more out of the Loddon than me this season! :)
Thanks Richy, I have had a good run during the last three outings, sometimes she flatters to deceive though and I always feel the moody mistress that is the Loddon can usually pull the carpet out from under you when you least expect it mate, we could still do with a proper topping up on the river, well in fact most of the rivers round Berkshire could do with a bit more rain.
Great vid again mark,i like you love barbel fishing and i think pound for pound not many fish fight better than a barbel.I look forward to the next video
Thanks Del and I would agree with that, they certainly know how to make your throat turn dry and make your palms sweat during a scrap that is for sure.
Cheers mate. We had a great day: my mate scotty had a 10lb cod, first known double from the area this year! The rest of us had plenty of small stuff. Bit of a lark really :P
Another cracking video mark, at the start of my youtube journey from, like you, writing a written blog,. Congratulations on the subscribers and well done mate. Danny
Hello Danny, I saw you had started making them and subscribed straight away as I always enjoy reading your posts on the sat on my perch blog, I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos, if they are anything like your blog they will be superb.
Great video Mark really enjoyed. I was out last night on the Severn from 6.30 till 1.30 nothing until 5min before i was going to pack the rod rapid round & I land a nice 8.13 over the moon.
That is a good way to end a trip Edward, especially as you was getting ready to pack up, I am guessing the Severn must have risen a bit with the recent rainfall too. Thanks mate glad you are enjoying the videos.
Love the setup I found it interesting especially the anti tangle rubber which I find fishing for barbell in fast flowing water an issue, so I sha'll be using those in future :)
Thanks Grayham it's simple and works would sum it up really, yes the anti tangle rubber is quite an integral necessity in my opinion especially when fishing supple braids.
Hey Adrian! Well done on your new barbel pb buddy. Yes you got it in one rig stops that come on the little piece of wire and a key ring so you can thread them up the line.
excellent stuff as always chap. thouroughly enjoyed it & always informative. quick question..how do you prepare ur bird seed mix as i have alot at my disposal due to a pet budgie that decided to go 'flyabout' in the big bad world!! cheers.
Hello there Dave and thank you. In answer to your question I usually cover a large saucepan or if making larger batches use pressure cooker size saucepan, I then cover the bird seed thoroughly with boiling water, baring in mind it does swell and will usually need another couple solid coverings of water, you can also use a large tub or bucket for this, making sure it is heat proof. I then leave this overnight to soak and the following day will if need be, top the seed up again or split it between pans and cover it again thoroughly with water, then bring it to the boil and reduce heat to simmer, simmering for around 45 minutes to an hour. You can then freeze the seed if you so wish, or keep it in a container such as a tub or bucket, it will keep for weeks this way and also ferment, releasing more of the natural sugars and enzymes, if you do keep it for a prolonged period ( three or four weeks) you will notice that when you come to open the bucket or tub, that it will have developed a white skin on top, you simply peel this back and discard the skin layer and can carry on safely using it. But one thing I will say is to keep an eye on the smell, if it smells sweet and almost fruity/sugary then it is fine. What you never really want in my opinion is for the smell to turn vinegary, as this is usually a sign that the sugars have been fully expended and it has been kept a bit too long. If you are doing large batches of seed, say for a regular baiting on a large waterway then you can use a burco boiler or similar to help prepare it. Hope that is of some use my friend.
just a quick question to pick your brains have been really struggling on my usual stretch of the warks Avon. Have you ever experienced this on any stretches you fished where the barbel seem to have disappeared. Last season managed 10 doubles to 13 lb with numerous barbel of 6 to 9lb
In answer to you from a fishing conditions perspective, I have found similar yes, normally when conditions have been tough going, by that I mean low clear and lack of rainfall. Although if you want my honest opinion and I have only fished the Warks Avon the once which was last year and my father had a barbel which had an ottered tail, I hate to say it but I think we have to make hay whilst the sun still shines, I am seeing friends with captures from the waterway in this video of fish with tails that have been torn and grabbed at by what appears otter damage, as well as finding the odd carp ottered also and I don't think we will see all the fish that have been eaten, especially on rivers with high banks and such. I do feel all rivers are being affected in this way. Believe me I love nature and seeing wildlife during fishing trips is great. But sadly there was once again little thought about reintroduction of an apex predator when the rivers are not able to balance it out.
Thanks for the reply mark. In total agreement with you on the otter situation I too love wildlife but little thought was given to the rear introduction of this predator rather sadly. I have seen a few otters on my last trip which may have led to the sparse amount of barbel this season. Looks like I might have to concentrate more on the Severn although I would love to fish the Loddon sometime. Do you do guided trips on the Loddon? Many thanks for taking the time to reply will have to have a re think on a few new stretches to fish as I love the fishing the warks Avon
Hello there Richard and thank you for dropping me a comment/question. Since this video was uploaded I have uploaded around twenty new coarse fishing videos, of which five of them are barbel fishing, I can assure you that the above video is certainly not my latest barbel fishing video and as such I have linked you below to those five newer vlogs, my latest being the family vacation trip during October on the River Severn with my father. In answer to your question regarding fishing and not filming, no certainly not, I have missed around four weeks of fishing until now due to being very unwell (partly my own doing) something that I go into detail about on my latest video that I have published today. In general it behooves us youtube anglers to film as much as possible when going on fishing trips, not that I am saying we should upload poor quality content for the sake of uploading but my point is if you are an angler whom fishes and films you generally do when you have that opportunity (at least I do anyway) however there is a proviso and that is I do not film on venues where fishing clubs might have a zero tolerance policy to publicity. I hope that has gone some way to answering your question and I have placed links below to all my newer barbel fishing videos. ruclips.net/video/yPxShfyfgW4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/yUxTQuvgVbM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/nlC7IzqLA9s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/JV_TY9q9Xz8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/c5ek_Kd-RXo/видео.html
Hi Mark - thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear you've been unwell, and glad to hear you're still filming. Not sure how I missed your more recent vlogs, though I did wonder if the barbel situation on the Loddon had changed over the last few years, as it has on many other rivers. I fish the Dove fairly regularly and have really struggled this season (as, anecdotally, have quite a few others). The Loddon looks like a lovely river, I have to say, Take it easy, and stay well! :)
haha not sure about on fire, but happy with some consistency in the last three barbel trips Liam. I'm sure it won't last though, but then wouldn't be quite the same if it did.
Hello there Mark, this is the Marco Cortesi MK2 pin that was sold originally by Dragon carp. The Mk2 has a wider drum to it than the original Marco Cortesi, so better for heavier lines. Thank you too for taking the time to watch the video.
nice one mark keep up the vids there quality, are you bothering much with the Kennet these days? very sad the demise of this once great river ive grown up on it and fear the time is now to fish somewhere else
I actually have a Kennet ticket for this season, but have as of yet to wet a line, although I do have a few places in mind that I wish to fish. I hear what you are saying Mark and it bares the same thoughts of a few other regular Kennet anglers whom feel that some stretches have deteriorated, which is a very sad situation. Unfortunately I think although we have some wonderful waterways, many of them have changed or are changing, some teeter on the brink, be that from the threat of over abstraction, predation, invasive species and at times pollution incidents. Thank you so much for the kind words regarding the videos.
really enjoy your vids mark, I have never fishe for barbell intentionally, only ever caught 2, but I was up at the middle severn last week looking around so I am setting up my rods & getting some buckets of bait together to get a few sessions in on the day ticket stretches, the seven is about 40 miles from where I live so a bit of a trek but if I bag a barbell of maybe 4lbs plus i'll be happy I usually fish small rivers like yourself so i'm a bit daunted by the big river seven & its massive flow! but if I ba at least one - man I'll be a happy chap! autumn is here...keep up the good work on the vids mark-thumbs up from me
Hello there mate, it sounds like you have some good plans made for your future trips, I really hope you get a Severn barbus, lovely surroundings out that way too, best of luck mate and thank you for your continued support of the channel.
Probably some of the most informative information for our select species. Well done Mark so glad you don't go down the route of some RUclipsrs. No silly gimmicks no stupid bait sponsorship just good straight forward tips delivered in a style that's made for camera. Well done on your subscribers.

Yes that's me. You do a very good job but kit and bait deals ect can detract from the content. Yours is spot on and worth watching.
I've said before, your style is Wilson-esk and John was my friend. You still get pleasure from small fish, and glory in the beast that come along from time to time. Your videos are fantastic mate. I thoroughly enjoy your calm and relaxed approach. Well done
Why that is very kind of you Joseph!
I could watch and do watch your channel for hours top man one of the much better channels for sure.
Thank you so much for the kind appraisal, really have been enjoying the filming this season so far and the frankly bewildering amount of positive input, thank you too.
Only give it where it is due and your channel is great must have a shesh one day
Thank you Mark. Its another really interesting video. You put a lot of work into making these. Its much appreciated.
Totally agree with Lee Kenny`s comments.......another great video Mark .

Thank you mate, glad you are enjoying them too.
Good as always I like your no nonsense approach and your enthusiasm is infectious 👍🇬🇧
Total respect mate another cracking video I will be trying these methods when I get chance
Thanks Peter, I hope they work well for you too.
Well Mark another top video which I thourghly enjoyed ,I love the rig info & all the baiting strategy ,I just enjoy it all ! When & if I manage a barbel from my very lightly stocked river you will certainly deserve some credit keep it up Ian
thanks alot mate.will give that a go (when the missus aint about!!) appreciate you getting back to me. keep up the good work.tight lines
No problem at all Dave, good idea to not do it when the good lady is not about, as us anglers can tend to stink the kitchen up at times.
Great video and cracking barbel Mark. Finding it hard on the Tees myself fished approximately 20 sessions and only hooking one fish this season and losing it. will carry on and hopefully get one before our first frosts. Tight lines Paul.

Nice video and i like your technique Mark, keep em coming !... Thanks You.
Thanks Reggie, will do my utmost to keep the videos flowing.
as always; inspiring, instructive, and indeed the next best thing to being on the bank!!
Thanks Tim, glad you enjoyed the vlog.
Fantastic info Mark keep up the good work
Thanks again Mark this great video. I hope I can fish the Loddon one day 🎣🎣🎣🎣.
Hello Tamas and thank you too for watching the video and taking time to post a comment my friend. I'm sure one day you might fish it and I'm pretty certain that you would enjoy it a lot, it's a beautiful little river.
Another great video Mark, look forward to the next one!
Thank you Chris, the next one I think will be a spot of chub fishing.
Another decent upload. I'm looking to get out on the search for a barbel its a fish I've never caught along with a river carp on the Thames by me just outside oxford. Theres got to be some but only one way to find out!!

I used to love Kellog's Crave haha! A great bait shape. A lovely video as always and a fine barbus to top it off.
Must admit Kellogs Crave was the closest thing that came to mind regarding the shape Tom lol. Thanks mate.
Mark Erdwin no worries mate, a really nice watch! My little project looks pretty much complete.. hope to get it up here soon
Nice, are you aiming to upload it some time next week perhaps?
Hopefully so, probably will get it up tonight or tomorrow and schedule it for late next week. Would be nice to hear your feedback.
Great vid again mark,i like you love barbel fishing and i think pound for pound not many fish fight better than a barbel.I look forward to the next video
Thanks Del and I would agree with that, they certainly know how to make your throat turn dry and make your palms sweat during a scrap that is for sure.
Great vid mark. No dislikes so far, lol! Very interesting to see your rig explained, too. I'm off sea fishing tomorrow, so wish me luck!
Hey Tom! Oh well if they do then they do, that is the interweb I guess, best of luck on your sea fishing trip mate and fingers crossed for a few.
Excellent as always, Mark.
Hey Steve! Surprised to see you here but happy also, thanks mate, hope you're keeping well.
Great video Mark really enjoyed. I was out last night on the Severn from 6.30 till 1.30 nothing until 5min before i was going to pack the rod rapid round & I land a nice 8.13 over the moon.

Inspirational Mark👍🏻
Cheers Chris, I do so enjoy making the videos.
Another great video Mark. What are soft ledger stops? Are they the rubber float stops that come on (for want of a better description) a key ring?
If you are doing large batches of seed, say for a regular baiting on a large waterway then you can use a burco boiler or similar to help prepare it. Hope that is of some use my friend.
very informative Mark, another great video
Thanks Darren ,as it happens I have just finished watching your new Wye video, enjoyed that a lot mate.
Thank you Mark

Hi Mark - is this your most recent barbel vlog? If so, just wondering if you've been fishing but not filming?
Hello there Richard and thank you for dropping me a comment/question. Since this video was uploaded I have uploaded around twenty new coarse fishing videos, of which five of them are barbel fishing, I can assure you that the above video is certainly not my latest barbel fishing video and as such I have linked you below to those five newer vlogs, my latest being the family vacation trip during October on the River Severn with my father. Hi all
I like to ask the reel.. is it fly reel and what kind of line is needed ?
Hello there Ismail. the reel is known as a Centre pin reel, it can be loaded with monofilament or braid.
Yes mark! You're now on fire!!
haha not sure about on fire, but happy with some consistency in the last three barbel trips Liam. I'm sure it won't last though, but then wouldn't be quite the same if it did.
cracking vid once again mark what centrepin are you using?
Hello there Mark, this is the Marco Cortesi MK2 pin that was sold originally by Dragon carp. The Mk2 has a wider drum to it than the original Marco Cortesi, so better for heavier lines. Thank you too for taking the time to watch the video.

Thanks Darren, see you have been having a few carp lately too mate.
Had any luck with wychwood about that replacement rod Mark?
No replies at all from them mate, pretty poor show really.
The first person to dislike this video would be hunted down and shamed! :D Great video as always Mark - we just cant get enough keep em coming1
Thanks Lee will try to, next video I will be doing some chub hunting on a small river.
That would be brilliant and of extreme interest for me I would love to get my hands on some more Chub!
Which model centrepin is it ? Thanks
It is a marco Cortessi pin but they are discontinued, the closest to it now woutl be a "stillwater wensum pin" or the ikonix centrepin.
cracking video as usual Mark
Thanks Paul, bit overly long perhaps, but I wanted to show swim selections and such.
I don't think an angler at a river video could be overly long!! I think we have a mutual friend. ....monty Dalrymple?
Yes indeed you must mean Jason! I used to read his blog regularly, but he doesn't seem to write it anymore?
Mark Erdwin c
Thanks Christopher, I saw part of your other comment but seems it has disappeared from youtube, cheers chap, glad you enjoyed the video.
Awesome well done!
Thanks Trefor. I do have a barbel video due to be uploaded soon.
Superb!
Thank you Mark :D
ginger snaps I thought I liked you for the fishing only , me mum got me liking them ...proper tasty
I swear they are too nice Rafa, pretty darn tasty to say the least mate.
just superb!
Cheers small weights.
really enjoy your vids mark, I have never fishe for barbell intentionally, only ever caught 2, but I was up at the middle severn last week looking around so I am setting up my rods & getting some buckets of bait together to get a few sessions in on the day ticket stretches, the seven is about 40 miles from where I live so a bit of a trek but if I bag a barbell of maybe 4lbs plus i'll be happy I usually fish small rivers like yourself so i'm a bit daunted by the big river seven & its massive flow! but if I ba at least one - man I'll be a happy chap! autumn is here...keep up the good work on the vids mark-thumbs up from me
Hello there mate, it sounds like you have some good plans made for your future trips, I really hope you get a Severn barbus, lovely surroundings out that way too, best of luck mate and thank you for your continued support of the channel.
No reason to mention the dislike button. No ones gonna need that!
Who knows Lee haha, is what it is though mate.
