- Ken "Pooch" van Druten is truly no stranger behind the FOH faders. He mixes metal legends like Iron Maiden or US rap icon Travis Scott. EventElevator met him for the series "From The Desk Of" at Iron Maiden's "Future Past Tour" in Germany. In the interview, he explains in detail which technical changes he made to his setup after the Corona period. Furthermore, the sound expert reveals some interesting details about his current mixing techniques with the DiGiCo SD7 desk and about his favorite plug-ins. An exciting chat in which you can feel that Mr. Pooch is really on fire for live mixing even after all these years.

Ken is awesome! So glad he was brought in the Maiden Killer Krew...keep kicking butt Pooch! Thanks for your awesome FOH work. Hoping to get another chance in 2024 with some US dates (crossing fingers).
I'm the white celtics shirt guy cheering and screaming in the pictures when Pooch says that. Thanks pooch for your precious work and thank you guys for this video!
🤘thx Alessandro. Up the Irons!
Ive seen iron maiden since the early 90's. Pooch has really improved their live sound. What a fantastic engineer!
Exactly, it's always great to meet such ambitious engineers. With Pooch, heart and technology swing in the same rhythm. Simply fantastic.
But the technology was not the same back than. Doug did the best he could with the existing technology
Excellent interview. It will always be a pleasure to listen to someone with so much experience. I was able to enjoy the great work of Pooch last year in DC, it was incredible. Thank you! 🔥
Pooch is in great sync with the band and whole IM crew for years and is still trying to move up a level. Despite his experience, he remains open and shares his knowledge. Such a great person and a true expert.
Christmas music at 9:13 😂 hilarious! But great content. I have never heard him live, but have learned a lot from him and his podcast!
Interesting interview, congratulations. Up The Irons Pooch!
I wish one day to have the kind of reputation, knowledge and work Ken has, a great Mexican fan here. Greetings. Thanks for sharing.
You are right. Pooch's CV and knowledge is really impressive. But he stays grounded and is always interested in giving something back to the community 🙌. And that is very important and makes him so likeable.
Listening to the technical skill of this legend engineer..it .just leave my mind pause..awile😮
This guy is brilliant at what heat does also him being a fan of Maiden when he was a teenager and all these years later he's a huge part of the Killer crew doing sound for Maidens live shows that's the American dream. Good for him..🤘
🤘
Superb content.
Pooch, I have always enjoyed your work and have learned a lot over the years… You are a very honest man, btw your looking great these days, did you get healthier on the road??? I myself went thru weight loss surgery and haven’t felt better…
Yes. I have tried to get healthier in the last few years and am exercising more and eating better.
Thats cool. Learned a few things Im gonna try out.
Triggers for gates! Great idea.
I hollered at you after the Sioux Fall SD show in Oct 2021(off to your SL)...It would have been Awesome to actually meet you, (..but House Security wouldn't allow me to..) I've been following your stuff for a while now, and as Fan of Maiden,...and many other 80's Metal Bands, I feel that YOU...and of course, "Big Mick",.. are The "VOICE" of the Classic Metal World. Keep up the AWESOME Job of doing what you do, and PLEASE don't stop Teaching the rest of us... I mix FOH for a Night Club in NW Iowa and it doesn't matter if your a Country Band or POP/Dance Band...it's gonna sound like a Fkng ROCK Band!
Great insights here, from decades of experience.
Exactly, every time it is exciting to listen to him, even if he has already explained some of the things. You can just feel his passion.
Dude! One of the best things of the pandemic thing was your videos with Rabold... You two have to make more videos together.... At least when you retire 😉👏👏👏
It would be brilliant if they could find the time to drop video regularly (even without pandemic breaks). Otherwise we have to catch them on the road directly at their FOH.
Gate triggers...Brilliant. Always good to listen to Pooch's tech talks.
So many interviews with him - but in really every one you learn another little trick. He is simply an FOH legend.
That trick has been around for quite some time.
as an old bag it is a pleasure to see old Turbosound TMS3 🙂
Nice to see you again……I was pondering that the other day….my mixing on my sound craft 200 b…1 SPX 90 1 SPX 900 1 sde 1000
My kick trick was going direct out I think or y cord into.some kinda drum processor …thunder kick…tuned way down run back into channel two with tight gate which was a peavy 5 ch gate hehe…. But it was my mixing on that stuff that got me on my first tour never looked back…
I wonder how it sounded…?
Love Pooch. I watched his podcast during the plandemic.
What's the exact Neve Device Ken Talks about to wide specific frequencies and to bring forward the bass in his main mix?
In his outboard rack, Pooch has two Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss units, there is a special stereo field editor inside. Furthermore, the outboard also contains, for example, also a Sonic Farm Dreamliner III. So even Mr. Pooch can't do without an a little bit of outboard. The love for a few buttons is strong in all of us. 🎛💗
Vielen Dank! Und weiter so mit euren fantastischen Videos :) @@EventElevator
@@EventElevator They do have a Dreamliner? I´m only aware of the Creamliner...🥳
Oh boy, these names are born when autocorrection intervenes. You are right, of course -- CCCCreamliner is correct. But of course it would be interesting for an even super softer new development for Sonic Farm. 🤪
Been on that Tour and in Dortmund, first night, Bruce seems to be hidden in the mix. Had he some Voice Problems?
Dude likes talking ya know
Lol
Why isn't anyone talking about how this guy needs some exercise?
I was just gonna say that he lost some pounds, looks like he's exercising !
Pooch only needs to push faders, that's the only important thing.
probably because he doesn't looks like he's fat because of lack of exercises, but rather looks like some kind of ilness and excercises won't help...
Because real sound engineers is supposed to have some belly 😂 And preferable british too 🇬🇧
Hey! That’s awesome! Let’s connect?
Please show more of THE GEAR! 24 minutes and barely showed the board. :(
I think the Iron Maiden RUclips channel has a video where Pooch gives you a walkthrough of the console.
Hi Michael, so sorry, our time on set was super limited. Next time we will go more in depth. On the web you can find a few more videos where Pooch explains more about the working environment, desk aso. Cheers!
Pooch is by far one of elite few engineers in this world i would love the opportunity to shake hand with you if you ever come to Australia 🇦🇺
Great to see and hear very interesting and knowledgeable thanks for sharing ❤
There's some brain melting stuff in here... Like.. how do you get virtual playback to affect the drum gate triggers to dial them in?!?! Great stuff. Thanks.
How now digital is the new analogue… Full circle.
This dude is a wizard.
One of the best in the biz.
Brandon, you're absolutely right. And the best thing is that he also shares his experiences and makes sure that everyone gets better at their audio craft. So valuable.
That "Amateur Allure" music at 16:00 lol
😉🥁
Studio guys is trying to be for the house engineers let me rephrase that live sound for the house engineers how many plug-ins you got going on man 400 500 possibly
