- In January 1982, Marina Nemat, then just sixteen years old, was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death for political crimes. Until then, her life in Tehran had centered around school, summer parties at the lake, and her crush on Andre, the young man she had met at church. But when math and history were subordinated to the study of the Koran and political propaganda, Marina protested. Her teacher replied, "If you don't like it, leave." She did, and, to her surprise, other students followed. Soon she was arrested with hundreds of other youths who had dared to speak out, and they were taken to the notorious Evin prison in Tehran. Two guards interrogated her. One beat her into unconsciousness; the other, Ali, fell in love with her. Sentenced to death for refusing to give up the names of her friends, she was minutes from being executed when Ali, using his family connections to Ayatollah Khomeini, plucked her from the firing squad and had her sentence reduced to life in prison. But he exacted a shocking price for saving her life -- with a dizzying combination of terror and tenderness, he asked her to marry him and abandon her Christian faith for Islam. If she didn't, he would see to it that her family was harmed. She spent the next two years as a prisoner of the state, and of the man who held her life, and her family's lives, in his hands. Her search for emotional redemption envelops her jailers, her husband and his family, and the country of her birth -- each of whom she grants the greatest gift of all: forgiveness.
About Marina Nemat
Marina Nemat was born in 1965 in Tehran, Iran. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, she was arrested at the age of sixteen and spent more than two years in Evin, a political prison in Tehran, where she was tortured and came very close to execution. She came to Canada in 1991 and has called it home ever since. Her memoir of her life in Iran, "Prisoner of Tehran" (Penguin Canada 2007), has been published in 28 other countries, and has been an international bestseller. In 2007, Marina received the inaugural Human Dignity Award from the European Parliament, and in 2008, she received the prestigious Grinzane Prize in Italy. In 2008/2009, she was an Aurea Fellow at University of Toronto’s Massey College, where she wrote her second book, "After Tehran: A Life Reclaimed" (Penguin Canada 2010). Marina regularly speaks at high schools, universities, and conferences around the world and sits on the Board of Directors at CCVT (Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture) and on advisory boards at ACAT (Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture) and PEN Canada. She also teaches memoir writing, in Farsi and in English, at the School of Continuing Studies at University of Toronto and writes book reviews for The Globe and Mail.

The Iranian people are highly cultured. I met a number of Americans who worked in Iran during the early 1970s. They fell in love with the country and the Iranian people. Their work experience there was the best job they ever had.
What is 'iran'? It is Persia, (includes iran (so called), Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan) .

atam mardes you have been given free will to choose. You simplify things to suit your simple state of mind . There is far more depth to it than what spews out of your mouth. No Born again Christian would expect you to have faith when you are the centre of your universe. It takes humility to come before the God of Creation. Your ignorance of the God of the bible is evident. Whether you believe or not you will kneel before the God of the bible and be judged. All that is required is faith. They left the belief for a reason. Most of the Shia beliefs are considered wrong islam. Iranian government condemns Sunni practitioners and put them on death row. Don't assume Indonesia (biggest Muslim population) will change to Christianity because of these 2 women whose country believed in completely different things than the rest of Muslim countries. Not only Arab countries are Muslim by the way! Malaysia, Brunei are also Muslim countries. They're peaceful people.

Marina is an amazing person. Very painful to listen to her story and the suffering of her family. Thank goodness for the mercy of Canada. It is wonderful she is a Christian. That she can live a life of love and be helpful is amazing. She could have let hatred and revenge destroy her, but she chose not to. The reminder cross she wears tells her why Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. Not because of hate, but He died on the cross for us because He loves us.

I am amazed how she didn't develop a Stockholm syndrome with her ex- husband, he saved her from death sentence at the last moment in even prison, he saved her from death and got killed alone and his family was kind to her. She is resilient and well grounded. All respect from a muslim woman.

He was a decent guy, she said.
She handed out Iranian postage stamps to everyone. The stamps had a depiction of a pleasant looking man in a suit with his arms wde open as if waiting for an embrace.

Agus Friasmansyah Thank you for your encouragement. The book of Nehemiah was written in the same period as Ezra. Be sure to read the first chapter of Ezra for the speech of Cyrus of Persia. Israelites also need to study the Bible more to understand the enormous debt they have to Iran but they didn’t listen to Jeremiah and don’t read the word. See Laurence Wallnau. He’s a bit of a salesman but learned of his Jewish roots only when he was grown. Only his father is Jewish but the son was given the order to save his people when he didn’t even know he was Jewish. He’s a bit of a salesman but had a lot to say in his early interviews. Watch Eric Metaxas and Mark Taylor videos, please, if you have time, but always let the Bible be your priority, not men or women. I’m old, a retired teacher, but I will help you find answers to your questions if I can. My mentor is almost 90 but fit as a fiddle. Notice when the name of Cyrus was mentioned by Isaiah in the message he received from God. (740 B.C. - 681 B.C.). B.C. Is of course, before Christ. It was possibly 200 yrs before the birth and reign of Cyrus in Persia. 536 B.C. Is the date I found in my history book for the decree of Cyrus, possibly almost 200 years after Isaiah’s prophecy when God called him by name.
