Sony doesn't want you using PSN on Steam Deck. Compatibility problems with Sony's PlayStation Network features on SteamOS, the banning of Steam in Vietnam due to non-compliance with local laws, and the delisting of games by Warner Bros. I also talk about Manor Lords selling 2 million copies, the exclusion of EA Sports college football from PC, and the upcoming Assassin's Creed game set in feudal Japan. Valve could improve compatibility by offering their own DRM and anti-cheat systems to publishers give them the carrot not the stick.

Humble Bundle is the best thing I’ve discovered for my Steam Deck! Thank you!
Wait, you’re saying EA is making stupid decisions that don’t make any sense?
You must be wrong, Bill. That would never happen.
PC players want a PSN overlay on their games, said no PC player ever 😂
If it allows communication with Playstation players, synching game saves (don't know if it does, it probably doesn't) and synching trophies then yes, I do want it. Its extremely useful if you already own the PS4/5 version.
What I don't want is another launcher.
@@alexatkinexactly
I would like it. Steam has a client, gog has a client, battle net has a client, origin has a client, epic has a client, Xbox has a client. Sony has a right to have client and why not be integrated into their achievements and social community as well as Steam’s?
Ideally, I launch all my games from the same client for simplicity, but who gives a crap if I get all the perks of each eco-system, while I do it.
@@alexatkinIf you have a ps4/5 you should want a playstation launcher on PC because that probably means you get cross buy as well!
You know what doesn't have a login client emudeck 👍 and all the PS2 and PS3 games your SD can hold.
Kernel-level anti cheat like the EA anticheat not working on Linux is a blessing in my opinion. Window should never ever had let kernel-level consumer apps to exist. If a game can extremely easily install anything at kernel level, malware can too. Avoid any OS that lets any random app install anything at kernel level with 1 click.
@@s7r49 That's Easy Anti-Cheat, not EA Anti Cheat.
Would be hard for computer mouse to work then I guess
@@TheErlend87Big difference between drivers and video games.
I love my deck, but the responsibility does not lie solely on Valve to make games work on deck. They’ve already gone above and beyond what I expected them to do. Large publishers just need to stop being anti consumer.
Valve should stop blocking GNU+Linux native games on Steam (as per their dev docs) and start helping devs release native games.
@@RealCelticGamer wasn’t aware that was happening, but sure? Seems like a valid thing to allow. They’d just have to find away to note that it’s a Linux only game. I’m all for more platforms, not less.
@@RealCelticGamer Where does valve block native games? Also it's pretty common for native games to work *worse* than using Proton. Sure, it may feel a little "wrong" to rely on a Windows compatibility layer to run games, but fact of the matter is GNU/Linux binary compatibility sucks.
Valve tried helping devs make Linux games, it was called the Steam Machine and it absolutely flopped.
Its sad because EAC supports proton/wine but the devs are this bad.
I really hope Valve manages to come up with a great solution to the anti-cheat problem for SteamOS/Proton, as it’s certainly going to be a huge barrier for Valve’s future hardware successes if left unresolved.
More and more single-player experiences (let alone multiplayer) are getting locked behind Kernel-level anti-cheat, making them unplayable on the Steam Deck.
I'm afraid there will only be one way and Valve has no real influence on it or at least only a limited one due to their great work with Proton. Linux simply needs a higher market share. High enough that publishers can no longer ignore Linux and prefer to drop kernel-based anti-cheat for compatibility. But unfortunately we are still a long way from that.
People need to wake up and understand how much Linux has improved in recent years. That it is no longer the Linux for tinkerers that people attribute to it, but is now for the most part very easy to use. As long as you stick with one of the big established distros.
That's easy! ;-D When there are more than 10 Million Steam Deck Users... which will be reached soon after the release of the steam deck 2, sony and also game developers will make sure that games with anti-cheat will work on steam os ;-D
I think they are doing it on purpose to keep valve from getting more market share.. I would not be surprised if Sony released a handheld soon
Why TF is there anticheat in a single player only game in the first place?
@@gdpiscopothat’s why I went with the Rog Ally. No limitations
Sony's biggest anti user move was when they disabled support for yellow dog Linux on the PS3. I was close to buying a PS3 to try a little Cell Processor programming but then changed my mind when this was disabled by Sony.
100% agree
Yellow Dog Linux is a Linux distribution that was pre-installed on some PlayStation 3 consoles by Terra Soft Solutions. I thought Terra just stopped working on that .
Oh man, yellow dog linux, the feelings..
@@X862go Sony removed support for it in one of their updates that were required to connect to PSN. I own a PS3 and remember reading that notice as a late teen. I believe, but I am not certain, that it was piracy related. I'm certain RUclips and Google have that answer.
Wasn't there class action lawsuit about that?
fyi, the buying the game then refunding does work. if you own the steam deck an the game don't work on the deck they allow refunds.
Just don't spend 2hrs trying to get games to run well OR no refund lol
One thing steam could do to combat this is too allow people to easily black list/ block apps from auto updating and give people an easy way to roll back game breaking updates
Sony stating that the PSN overlay in Ghost of Tsushima does not work on Steam Deck to me shows bad intentions. Because there is rarely any real technical reasons why some third party overlay/launcher would not work. And if there is, it would be a trivial issue for them to work together with Valve to fix it.
No if they actually wanted the PSN overlay to work on the Steam Deck, they would have instead said something like "we are still working on support blablabla...". This is deliberate they don't want it to work on Steam Deck, I would not be surprised if they release their own launcher for PC in the near future and pull their games from Steam.
No thanks I'm not buying anything that needs PSN accounts, even though I'm only interested in the single player. Let the "AAA" publishers rot.
They want you to buy their crappy overpriced PlayStation Portal
@@gdpiscopo if that was the case, they wouldn’t sell them for PC at all
melodramatic. of course they want to sell games.
I got back into the Sony ecosystem in late 2016 picking up a PS4 Pro and enjoying a ton of awesome exclusives on the system. Got a PS5 in 2022 for the same reason... But I ran into several of the policies and business practices I did not agree with. Especially the suspension of PSN accounts simply for saying words in messages they don't like. I literally just used the "r-slur" in a message with someone talking about a rematch and say "1 round is r-slurred" suggesting best of 3 rounds. They reported me and I was suspended from a service I PAY FOR while using my 1st amendment right.
This has happened to countless people and is absolutely egregious. After that I've made the decision I will not buy any new games in the Playstation ecosystem and will just wait and buy them on PC.... Well after the entire Helldivers 2 fiasco and now seeing their aim to force PSN logins even on the PC released games.... I guess that means time to boycott their games entirely?
I look forward to the day that 90 percent of gaming PCs will be running steamOS. I know my pc is only used for gaming and Internet browsing. So why the heck not?
Yeah very funny , let's start with 20 % at least and this will be sufficient
I am running nobara and windows at this point. Every game I have that plays well on steam is loaded up on nobara and the others are loaded up on windows. Oh and I also have Batocera on 1TB sd card. All of this is running on a GPD win 4 2024 (aftermarket 4TB). Unfortunatly my EGPU is still not running the best on linux. Nobara, Chimera and Bazzite don't like when you switch back and forth from having the EGPU. So regrettably my games that I prefer to run with the EGPU are ran on windows.

Microsoft will do everything they possibly can to prevent that from happening.
Love your videos and your podcast, keep up the good work!
If I was among the individuals who've had their games break intentionally by the developers with an update patch, I'd be calling for mass boycotts and demanding a full refund.
I only use my steam deck . Yes, I’m getting ghost of tsushima only for single player , but why do I have to pay FULL price for a game that came out YEARS ago with only HALF of the functionality. Us players are and have been getting taken advantage of for the longest.
Broken ports used to be a console thing. Now it's a PC thing. The funny thing is, PC is the champ now. Crazy.
You don't have to pay full price. Wait for a sale and buy the game on your terms. Your money is yours to spend or not to spend, so use the power you have and don't let them take advantage.
Fyi the game was cracked day one. It allows frame gen on the deck that the steam version does not. No drm, no PSN bull. Sony made their bed. Now sleep on it
I payed $45 for it…so I’m happy

I don't want the psn forced. I won't buy another ps title until they stop this practice. Ghosts will just remain a specter to me for now.
Fairly certain that people that do not want to create a PSN account, will be pirating it. Missed revenue for Sony :)

Wait, you mean to tell me that Afro Samurai could be based on a real person?
If only SBI wasn't involved in the development.
Afro Samurai is a work of fiction that takes some inspiration from the real world, a pretty good manga and show worth watching. Sony's Yasuke is a historically "accurate" take on what a samurai was. Its like comparing some delicious brownies with poop.

Happily surprised to find that Halo MCC had 2 steam launchers, one with and one without easydrm. I've been playing the campaigns on deck with no issues, no need to be online under the drm-free launcher

Historically accurate black samurai.
When you think about their confusion regarding what a retainer is, it makes perfect sense why they fail to distinguish between black and yellow.
ghost of tsushima runs amazing on SD. 40fps/medium/fsr3 at 10-12watt tdp. 16-18 total watts. incredible. worth every penny.
Better solution. Valve takes a larger cut of the game sale if it doesn't work on Linux. For all sales including windows.
Else these companies will never get anti cheat systems ported over.
Make it a financial issue.
Until developers support Linux valve is one step away from being replaced by windows.
yeah, no that is a blatant anti trust or similiar law problem.
Valve as a company, cant decide to take a larger cut of profits becasue it dosnt run on a Product valve sells that is unrelated to the storefront itself beyond running it while simultationusly being a Monopoly, or close to it.
The steamdeck isnt a vital component of Steam(the storefront), its a product, by the same company that makes steam, that runs steam.
Steam by now is a virtual monopoly, controlling well over 70% of the marketshare.
If you want to sell your game digitaly nowadays, beyond very specific niche usecases. You are unlikely to get around Steam as your main distriubtion platform. you are essentialy forced into a contract with terms you are unable to negotiate over because no real competitor exists, so steam has no reasson to negotiate.
Sure Linux gaming should become more prevelant, but steam exploiting a monopolistic position to essentialy push their own Product(SteamOS OR SteamDeck) even if it benefits non steamOS linux distribution isnt the way to get around it.
Yasuke was an historical figure but he was a page and later accused of murder....They should have done their research a bit better....

Do you know of a way to play it or can you point me in some direction to actually play it? I am actually begging for any help here. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
It seems like that game was removed from sale on Steam but it's still available to buy from Humble store
This is good news. I'm thinking about getting a new PC and going PC/Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch moving forward.
Might look at the Legion Go for the games that the Steam Deck can't play.
I've heard Legion haven't updated their handheld in the last 6 months. Most of the updates comes from the users. To me this isn't a good sign.
I have every current console and pc.
Moving forward I'm gonna be like you. Steam (PC and deck), and whatever Nintendo thing is current
I switched to pc/ steam deck / switch plus retro game handhelds
If you get a pc/deck you already have a switch, a better switch x2 just sayin
@@smidlee7747there is no need for update if PC is already good (example if the controller is work well, software support it is good, bios fine, etc). The rest just which support it from each individual manufacture (this means that PC is work well with original which always what you want).
1 Brand which always fucking update their firmware is ASUS and just avoid like plague for now.
I guess it's nice they specifically say single player is playable but it sucks that you can't play MP on the thing. Almost all my PC purchases these days are geared towards the deck, so if they aren't playable on it, I'm usually not buying them.
I just want to play any game on pc. Is that so difficult to request?
Garden warfare 2 is unironically one of the best games ive ever played
GE-Proton 9.1 , it usually works on any game , 9 out of 10 ( even unsupported ones ), unless there is some crazy anti-cheat software.
i plan on buying a steam deck this summer so i hope more games will be compatible
Sony's basically thinking that pc is also a closed walled eco system thats theirs.... thats not how us pc gamers let go easily. There has definitely been creep in the industry for years, but going head first like this is dumb af. I think its gunna be a year or more of waiting for sales if they these publishers get their shit together, and not support the games on launch
"thats not how us pc gamers let go easily"... bro, Sony was making PC only mmos before many of todays gamers were even born. Remember Everquest? Planetside, etc, etc, ? that was all sony with their PC department (SOE). Right now they are making some dumb decisions, but they know very well whats up on the PC side of gaming.
They need to get the multiplayer working on Steamdeck - asking to sign into PSN is one thing, but windows only for multiplayer isn’t good.
I think these companies are allergic to money.
It did not work with helldivers. Sony reversed their reversal decision a week later.
I'm so ticked off College Football 25 won't be the Steam Deck. I don't play 5 of games, but I've been waiting on this for a while.
With Ghost of Tsushima, they are disclosing everything up front. I don't agree with what they're doing, but it at least allows customers to make an informed decision before purchasing. The real problem is like with Helldivers or Plants vs Zombies, where negative alterations are added post launch, outside the review and return windows. I think it an update deliberately breaks or removes your access to any part of the game; you should be entitled to a 100% refund regardless of time played. This applies for all digital purchases like movies and ebooks too. The fact that some corporation can arbitrarily change the terms and take away something you've already legally paid for is just gross.
A lot of people are speculating the PSN push is due to flat console sales. I don't think Sony is getting many new PSN users, and if they can't show the service is growing, that will negatively impact stock prices. Still underhanded of them regardless of the justification.
Oh dang thought this was review tech USA till I looked at the channel name I was like "huh he changed alot" LOL
Valve is Gabe. When Gabe passes om, if Valve goes public, Valve is dead to us all.
To give Sony a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit of credit at least they let the players know that they would need to Link their PSN account in order to play the multiplayer unlike Helldivers 2. However I am psyched to purchase Ghosts of Tsushima on PC and Don't mind that the Multiplayer isn't going to work on the Deck because I wasn't going to bother with the Multiplayer mode anyway. I agree that Valve should create their own Anti-cheat at least because it is good to have more options and even user friendly options for proton and Linux users and devs who want to do Online Multiplayer games for the Deck.
Bill out the gate with the Power Shirt
Hey, just wanted to say that I really love the Nerd Nest crew videos! Wanted to get your take on something that I felt Valve should consider.
Once a developer, i.e, EA with Plants v Zombies, breaks the compatibility with Steam Deck, Valve should allow a refund regardless of time spent on the title. Love to hear what you and the crew think about Valve modifying their refund policy to include this.
Publisher brakes product.
People should receive refund.
Agreed, imagine you bought a brand new car and the salesman came round to your house a month later and drove a bulldozer through it, you'd want your money back!
To your GoT idea of selling 2 seperate versions.
Sounds good in theory... BUT.. consumers are stupid. They would make a Riot if you sell "the multiplayer for 10 bucks" or anything like that. There is also the fact that having to seperate the MP and SP on a "ownership" level is additional work required. and so on
But it will work if installed on windows on deck?
yeah, it will.
thats not the reason why blizzard was kickt out lol
RIGHT! Net Ease and now it's back - sloppy reporting.
You've made quite a few valid points, especially with the anti-cheating and different priced games.
Your ghosts of tsushima reference is a bit misguided. The multi-player was added as free dlc to the main game. Why should they charge less for a version without the multi-player dlc when they never charged for it in the first place? Makes no sense.
That’s actually a pretty good argument. I didn’t realize that it was never charged for in the first place. I’m not sure how I feel about that now.
@NerdNest that all being said it is kinda ignoring the steak for the peas. There is still no reason PS couldn't offer a separate version of the game without multi-player and the need for PSN....other than the need for Sony to pad their PSN player count with PC gamers.
I played 104 hours of Ghost and never touched Legends (multiplayer) -- they desperately want to get telemetry data for their investors to show engagement on PSN, mainly because outside of Helldivers 2 (a game completely bootstrapped by PC gamers, and then later PS5 sales started kicking-in) they were massively underperforming. They could just offer up a separate release client, which some games do (like Halo Infinite for instance), that has the necessary bits for multiplayer. This way they allow for the sales to occur, barring the hilarious 180 countries they don't allow PSN in, and don't throw the baby out with the bathwater for a mode in the game which I would guess less than 5% of players actually touch (and that's being generous).
There's still some EA shenanigans stopping me from playing the mass effect legendary edition on deck and I can't be bothered to fix it yet. Still annoying though seeing how I paid 6 whole dollars for it.
More support for the Steamdeck would be Godsend, I loved playing MH on the SD even Worldborne which I find a bit boring playing on the PS4 (playing it on the Steamdeck really made it more fun for me). I hope Sony becomes a bot lenient with their PSN linking depending on the region. I don't trust them too much since the reoccurring data breach.
Regarding the AC debacle I think it's just Americans doing American things, it's just a point view from someone living in Asia. Older title from what I remember from playing it had characters who weren't real, if they were they would have almost little or no notoriety since they are weaving them with the history or the game story. Most of them are also the same race as the location of the game. If they wanted a samurai like point of view there are a lot they can use someone like Hanzo. But yeah if US game companies will do this I don't see it being wrong even if there are people who hate the idea, but as long as they are respectful with the view of other game companies in other countries as I see a lot of western ideals being forced to other nations. Just my take. If it's fun it will be played, if not then that's fine as well.
I don't think Valve providing their own anti-cheat would work, as many companies use their own anti-cheat which is likely heavily integrated into how their online network functions.
Look, I have a Steam Deck, so don't hate me, but this is why people who go nuts over Steam OS over Windows handhelds and turn their noses up at the idea come off so badly. We're asking publishers to change their business models because their updates require new Proton updates and we don't want to deal with that.
Valve is trying to make PC gaming for console friendly while Microsoft recently show how much they care about gamers. Thus Valve makes their money on games while Microsoft doesn't so they want to hold on their their monopoly while giving gamers the middle finger.
Lt. Rasczak right here... cool video
I mean, Valve is already "delisting" many games so they don't have to comply to laws in Germany, so I don't see why they shouldn't do the same for Vietnam...
I'll never buy a EA game. I haven't for a while. Not even hyperbole.
As cool of an idea as your suggestion sounds, Valve supplying their own anticheat is probably an issue that is going to have their neglect of Team Fortress 2 bite them in the ass hard, because developers are gonna look at that, and go "Why would I trust your anticheat, you can't get TF2's shit together, I don't want that to happen to my game."
Valve Should Halt the Sale of the games temporarily until functionality is restored the best way to hold these company's accountable is by hurting there bottom line steam is still the most popular store front on PC being unable to sell there games on there would be very damaging to any publisher looking to brake into the PC gaming market especially Sony right now having lost billions recently.
This.
They don't want to spend not development money to put out two versions of games
With the Sony issue, I'd say your only decent option may be a petition. It's not like it forces their hand, but it does send some message, and not in an odd abstract manner that may not be understood.
All this big company’s don’t like players. they like money. In their dreams people buy games and don’t play them. Except Valve
I need Grand Turismo on PC 🔥
I didn’t know I wanted this. Though the dual sense is half of what makes GT7 so good
The game plays phenomenally on the deck. It’s easily the best PC port to ever come from PS.
its not so simple to change the anti cheat solution used in a game, its not a matter of price , not to mention that having an single provider for the anti cheat solution means that hackers just have to target an single solution, there is no reason to think that valve alone can do a better job at fighting cheaters than all the other solutions combined.
Shirt's 🔥 dude. May I ask, where'd you get it?
I honestly don’t know. Bought it last year but I don’t know the site.
I think that clearly informing the purchaser of what he is purchasing and all that it entails (i.e., not burying it in p. 158 of a EULA and quietly altering your website) is simply called "bare-minimum business ethics."
One does not celebrate the fact that one's spouse "didn't cheat" at the 25th wedding anniversary; fidelity is a "bare minimum" of marriage, not a "reach goal."
I don't give any credit to companies for doing what they should already have done from the start.
The bar is already so low for them:
1)Tell me, clearly, what you are selling.
2) If I purchase the thing that you were selling, provide me the product that was advertised, and not something else.
Why should we have to see how well they can play "business ethics limbo" by lowering the bar any further?
@17:00 I doubt they'll have trouble finding talent. Thousands of devs have been laid off the past year or so.
DRM added AFTER purchased.... should trigger refund availability automatically... No reason for kernal drm, define popularity.... Deck is like 5% or smaller....
EA had what, 4 or 5 bad PC releases as a publisher last year? The devs were in favor of fixing performance issues and EA was like 🤷🏼♂️ - EA doing EA shit.
The fact that we live in a day and age where we lean on modders to release what are effectively system-level performance patches is unreal.

Wow to be fair to EA, I'd rather play old games with proton than linux native. Maitaining old linux games is hard. Thankfully steam also fixed that with steam runtime. We should start asking for native ports now!
By targeting they're intentionally limiting you and keeping you from playing lergends/co-op from steam deck.
Unsupported? You know what to do...
While I think a unified DRM/Anti-cheat on valve would be beneficial to gamers (on paper), i don’t believe that companies will be as receptive to actually USEING Valve’s in house DRM platform, no matter the incentive. This is due to the fact that most anticheat software actually collects user data and sends that data to the publisher. To them, user data may be even more lucrative than game sales. Even if Valve were to force companies to use their anticheat, companies would just pull their games off of their storefront and put them on their own first party launchers and making the problem worse for everyone. This is a very complex issue that I cannot find a solution for.
I will not for the life of me ever understand why Ubisoft, EA and now Sony keep destroying their User experience with overbearing additional launchers and now even overlays. And security is not an issue you need launchers or overlays for, that's what Anti-Cheat and Anti-Hacking software is for.
Microsoft does it right: Have the proprietary communication and platform stuff be part of the game like in Diablo 4 on Steamdeck. Great experience playing Diablo 4 on Steamdeck btw.
Valve has a DRM. The games are already encrypted so you can't simply pirate it. I hated this in the past but with steamdeck I'm purely buying from steam.
Bruh sports gamers and pc gamers are separate demographics 😂
Sony just needs to reopen Japan studios and get back to making creative games like in the old days. Just make good games and I will buy a ps5. Not this blockbuster game BS!
High five to WB for listening and agreeing
While this sounds like a lot of bad news, I see this as being a big W for game devs on PC and Steam. AAA game studios / Playstation & Xbox are making bad examples of themselves! If I were an indie game dev, I'd stay away from the AAA game studios, and I can see that there is a good possibility that there are many game devs out there that see that as well and we might see even more devs shift their focus more towards PC and Steam rather than the big 3! Now is the time that Valve should be launching a home console to come in and sweep the console players into the platform!
Well im not pay full price for GOT and dont get Legends multiplayer, dont get me wrong i have finished the game like 4 times is amazing but Legends for me is the best mode to play this game,i hope they fix the multiplayer thing.

I only have a whopping two Sony games in my Steam library, on PC Microsoft have a slight edge, EA suck now and I don't have any recent purchases from them.
Sony is probably going to release a PSP or PS Vita 2 and wants to make it such a pain in the ass to play on other platforms, that people are forced to buy their portable rather then a steam deck.
Sony should want to support Linux just to annoy their main rival - Microsoft
Honestly despise EA for forcing their terrible app on older games. Burnout paradise is unplayable without going into the files and disabling the app
