  • It's another installment of our "Breakdowns of Breakdowns" series! This time we look at a classic Gang Starr beat juggle by the east coast master DJ Perseus. First seen in 2000, Perseus created this masterpiece of a beat juggle routine using only a short section of a skit from the classic Gang Starr album “Hard To Earn.” Check it out and be blown away!

Dope Post yo! This was always one of my favorite juggles. I was cool with him around this time and actually have some footage of a pretty clean version of his DMC set from that year. It was filmed at his crib maybe 2 weeks after he won the DC regional. On it there's a slight altered version of this juggle. Hit me up if you're interested.

Hi Dj Real, You didn't just know him as I did at that time, you and I scored 2nd and 3rd against that set in S. Attleborough Guitar Center. Weren't you in that video as well? DJ Spryte let me on the video at the last minute. If you look at the name list, you'll see there is one person missing. That was me because I couldn't convert my old camcorder's video to VHS by the deadline. / P.S. I miss your K.K. routine.

I see comments say Perseus didn’t practice or all he had were break records. I knew Perseus…I’m friends with Presyce and met the Turntable Technicans through him. Perseus even stayed at my house before the Chicago DMC and he def spent the whole night practicing on my set up. Not only did Persus practice all the time but they all did during that era (I don’t just mean the Techinicans…but everyone on this level was). They all loved deejaying because it was so competitive at the time. I can’t tell you the amount of practice sessions I’ve been to or sat in on during that era. They all practice their ass off.
That said Perseus just had so many dope creative routines back then that were funky and technical and the average person in the crowd could rock with even if they didn’t get exactly what he was doing it sounded good.
Aight Chill is def one of my fav juggles, also Babu’s Blind Alley, A Trak’s Missy Elliot routine… too many good routines from that era now that I think of it lol
Btw those Platter Pirates vhs battles were fire the ones I had were the in person battles though.

Pers is a legend in this juggle shit. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they’re talking about. - DJMIKEC

Some cool facts: 1. He had about 20-50 lps, not even enough records to fill up a crate. He practiced with the same stack of records for years! 2. He didn't practice for hours, but he would only practice when he thought of an idea. 3. His main influence is Rob Swift, and Rob was a thinker, whereas alot of djs would just practice for hours without thinking outside the box!!!

Yeah someone told me at the time that he pretty much just had a bunch of break records, lol. - Mike
