As a self learned tree surgeon, we don't care about recognizance or appreciation. The paycheck and any tips are just fine. Tress are our friends and deserve care and attention. Like children they need help.
I read that this happens when the workers climbed up the tree and trimmed the fronds from the bottom up, placing themselves directly beneath the fronds. When a tree trimmer cuts or pulls on dead fronds, adjacent fronds or an entire ring of fronds may collapse and encase the worker. The weight of the fronds causes pressure on the worker’s chest and can lead to suffocation. Proper work procedures and correct equipment should be used. Fronds should be removed by workers using an aerial device and wearing fall protection. Alternatively, workers should use climbing procedures that place them above the fronds. this is from the CDC website. They should be licensed and have all safety measures , to protect their workers ! My Heartfelt Sympathy to the Family !
When a tree is over-weighted with fronds such as this tree was, you are absolutely correct. This tree had not been maintained for over five years. If the tree is maintained annually, then the bottom up approach is acceptable.

I live in San Diego. There are so many different types of palm tree's, all need maintenance to trim the dead fronds that don't look dangerous, but are heavy, and have the saw tooth edges that can really injure a person, or hit cars. One thing about San Diego is our lack of storms, so many times the dead fronds will come down at once. When you trim a palm tree you always do it from the top. Palm skirts are very unstable and when you start cutting from below the whole skirt which is very heavy can Slough off and crush the tree worker suffocating him. Trained arborists know about this danger and are trained to start trimming the skirt at the top. Either using a bucket truck or shooting a line over the top and then climbing up to the top over the skirt and working from the top down. You never want to be tied in under an unstable skirt. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE CONFUSED: Fronds are just the big branches. Tree trimmers get up there to trim the dead ones. Some will get up under them to cut them which is dangerous. If one doesn't fall off all the way or shifts it can be heavy enough to pin the persons in and put pressure on their body making it difficult to breath. Additionally, it will take rescue services a long time to get to get to you if you're still alive increasing the risk that you'll die.

You should never trim without a watching partner. Being in trees is a risky business, anything with a high risk factor should always be done with a team. If anything goes wrong, at least help is right there.
The most a watching partner can do is call 911, other than that, the fate of the tree trimmer is the ticking time it takes for the fire department to arrive, and attend to the trapped man. I believe it took 40 minutes to pull my dad out. It was too late.
I used to trim trees around power and a young friend of mine fell from a tree and paralyzed himself from the waist down. Another friend was up in the cherry picker between the power lines and the truck caught on fire and he had to jump out of the bucket and onto the tree. The fire burned his jacket he had on. I’ve only been shocked ( many times ), and other things have happened that made tree trimming interesting.
That is another reason why self cleaning palm trees are best. Adonidias, alexander and Royal are messy but they drop their fronds. Very dangerous job for not very much pay.
I know there is tons of information online about the dangers of bottom-up palm frond removal. Not sure if there is enough of it in Spanish. OSHA should mandate safety training for arborists. If you look at OSHA incident reports, you'll see how many tree trimmers are killed each year from just a few repeated mistakes. This is one of them.
Very common death in the tree service. I always tell people starting their own business to always climb over the palm fronds and to educate your self. It’s not a game
We had several Royal Palm trees in our yard when I grew up in Florida and I still remember how the fronds would come crashing down! They’re deceptively heavy. If one were to hit you, it would probably break some bones at least. I understand how these men are crushed under all the weight. Prayers for the family 🙏😢

I’ve done it hundreds of times.
It’s unknown if wind played a factor…..?
Dying just from work
You should never trim without a watching partner.
@@MfckingDye still better than solo. Also they can alert you to dangerous situations, since they have another perspective.
How sad, I didn’t even know that could happen. Prayers for the family.
How did he die though? I read the description and said wind might be a factor? Did he suffocate?
All the branches were rotten and let go at the same time crushing him or cutting off air
I had no idea dried fronds could be that heavy.
100s of them. And they ain’t dry at the root. They are full of moisture and dirt and rat nests and all kinds of stuff
Now I have to go to WPD and see if they caught this on camera! Those fronds will get you every single time!!
Wpd?
Hard and dangerous work. We should recognize them more.
Always spot on, respectful and encouraging! I like the way you are bringing awareness about these big creators weaponizing the mob mentality!
Tree Trimmers are a different breed. Risking their life every day. This is so sad. He's done probably thousands of these trees.
RIP tree trimmer...
How horrible. The heart wrenching screams near the end of this video😓 my prayers to his family
That is another reason why self cleaning palm trees are best. Adonidias, alexander and Royal are messy but they drop their fronds. Very dangerous job for not very much pay.
I CAN'T SEE A SHT! W T F HAPPENED 😳
Wow didn't know that this was a thing. RIP to this poor man and my condolences to the family.
SOOOOO much information in this video
This same type of accident happened in San Diego a week ago. I did not know it was so common.
Aren’t they cut 1 at a time? He was pinned under 1 section or kept cutting until he was buried under them?
Always hire Qualified, Insured and Bonded Tree people... Going Cheap can be very expensive for all people concerned!
So the firefighters ended up trimming the tree after all...
🤣
I know there is tons of information online about the dangers of bottom-up palm frond removal. Not sure if there is enough of it in Spanish. OSHA should mandate safety training for arborists. If you look at OSHA incident reports, you'll see how many tree trimmers are killed each year from just a few repeated mistakes. This is one of them.
“FRONDS, YELLOWJACKETS, HORNETS…OH MY!!”
This video is pathetic. Viewers want to see the body being extracted and removed, not shots of people talking and cop cars. Really?
Very common death in the tree service. I always tell people starting their own business to always climb over the palm fronds and to educate your self. It’s not a game
We had several Royal Palm trees in our yard when I grew up in Florida and I still remember how the fronds would come crashing down! They’re deceptively heavy. If one were to hit you, it would probably break some bones at least.
I understand how these men are crushed under all the weight.
Prayers for the family 🙏😢
Only hire qualified, experienced tree companies
"I'll be home for dinner in half an hour, I know today it's windy, but it doesn't matter, I'll be quick."
Killers trees. Tree trimmers hate palms
