It is an amazing car and a great video. It still amazes me that people had and still have the means to buy a car new and save it or have the foresight to know that one day a vehicle will be valuable regardless of make or model. When the Mustang performance started picking up steam in 1982 after years in the malaise era people were glad to see some performance back and drove the wheels off these cars. Myself included. From 1991-1993 the Mustang GT came with the ZR Goodyear "gatorback" tires while the LX came with the Michelin tires. I have seen the dealer swap them at the buyers request, but that probably didn't happen too often. A friend of mine bought a new 1992 LX coupe 5.0 and had the dealer swap the wheels/gatorback tires off a GT that was on the lot because he thought the Michelins were ugly.

Interestingly the power steering rack is coded as a '93 rack according to my Ford mechanic, and it had 1993 dated spark plug wires (wish I still had them). I have owned it since March of '93, bought it with 4,800 miles on it. Wish it still looked like this blue one!
In 1993 I bought a Bimini blue 92 notch with 10K miles on it. 5.0, 5 speed, 3.08 gear. Had A/C but no cruise and a very basic AM/FM radio. I know it had power locks because an actuator was replaced under warranty but can’t remember about the windows; think they were power but my 88 GT vert was manual and that’s all been a long time ago so memory is a little hazy. I got an 88’ lx regatta blue vert 2.3 with 82k miles, previous owner only cared for the exterior. So I will have a bit of work to get it perfect. The door pins and bushings are the originals and the driver door is starting to hit the skirt when I open it lol
Bimini Blue was offered in model year 1993 but not on the Mustang. It was offered on the Ford cars: Escort, Probe, and Tempo. Bright Calypso Green was not offered on Ford cars in model year 1991.
@@foxchassis Yes, Bimini was dropped in 1993 and replaced with Bright Blue...my mistake. Calypso was definitely offered in 1991, I have seen one personally and it is listed as a factory Mustang color on several resources.
I still have my 91 Bimini notch that I bought brand new with a very similar option package, but upgraded radio with EQ. Canadian car also. I actually had choice between a Calypso, the Bimini, and a white notch on the lot that were clearing out half way through 92 as the 93 models were coming. In the 30 years that I've had the car, I've only seen 1 other 91 Bimini notch in person with the black moldings. Seen 3 actual Biminis, but they were either 92's, or as was common, people would paint their moldings to make the car look newer. Just a lucky purchase. And it's still in great shape, but modified. No regrets. Oddly, my alternator didn't have the GT stamped on it as I just replaced the original one and it was still working fine, I just wanted to upgrade. Thanks for a great video.
I have the dealership installed window sticker and all the original sales papers, yes. But it looks different than the factory stickers I've seen on other cars.
I believe that the coating is referred to as lower road side abrasion protection on a Marti report. Most Canadian cars have this, rear defrost, block heater, metric speedometer ect.
Yes, that was the 'lower bodyside protection' option. It was applied to the lower part of the body, below the bodyside molding, between the front and rear wheels. There was no factory undercoating option.
The lower body guard protection was called Duraguard by Ford. If you haven’t seen it in the states, then it was for the Canadian market. If memory serves me correct this was applied to I believe all Ford passenger cars from 1978 onwards . My dads new 1979 Granada had it , his 1983 Marquis had it my Lx has it. It wasn’t Mustang specific and certainly wouldn’t of been rare here in Canada.
DuraGuard was more than the textured coating on the lower bodyside. DuraGuard was anti-corrosion on a lot of places on the car. The textured paint on the lower bodyside was a separate option in the states, and included with DuraGuard on Canadian car.
Nice video Matt! I hooked up my fog lights on my 92 green car with the harness already there! I ask how to hook them up on a LX on youtube and a guy told me about the wiring! ;-)
What a fun one Matt. I was so looking forward to this one as I saw it come up. What a beautiful car. My wife says that my jokes are 98.7% original. You and Doc Fox did such an excellent job here.
Tell Matt thank you for the detail about the build date stamp. I found it on the left strut tower on my ‘84 GT. The stamp is 10 07 and the build tag says 10/83. Also this car has the same coating below the belt line and it was originally sold in Iowa.
Hey bud, great video as always. A couple things for you: my 92 coupe (Canadian car) is the same option sheet as this 92; only options it has is power mirrors, cruise, and lumbar. It also has the “gravel guard” on bottom of the doors.
My dad still has his blue 87 LK 5.0. Gravel Guard. Also we has an 88' notchback at the same time. Gravel guard too. So I had fun in high School. 2 5.0 's :)
Great video Matt. Really cool to see Matt from Fox Resto point out a few details on these cars that you just don't see anymore. Also really cool to see a car from Sterling Ford with the og dealer sticker. That dealer is just a few minutes from my place. I was checking out a 2019 GT350 a few years ago and in the back of the lot was a black on black 88 GT, probably owned by one of the techs. Ps I'm pretty sure the coating on the bottom of the doors is a CDN car thing. I've seen it on all the foxes up here.
Man this is one beautiful car I would have to say it is one of the top 3 that you have showed on your channel... my favorite color as well and interior is amazing I had no idea that they came that deep of gray like you were saying and that side coating you were talking about under the body molding strips I was watching a video on TIP (The Infamous Project) channel and he said all Canadian mustangs came with that from the factory because of the snow and sand and all that stuff they salted the roads so it was definitely a protection thing for Canadian cars from what he said and for being from Canada that thing is like wow I'm in love with it LOL! you definitely have some great taste in what youve choosen to show thanks buddy! Another great video! you've been killin it with these beautiful cars you're bringing to the channel Matt!!!
There is a lot of little nuances with Canadian fox platform mustangs like my aunts 89 that she ordered brand new, that came with deluxe, black interior, airbag steering wheel and 10 holes on a four-cylinder five speed LX (she almost got the 5 L if she had I bet she would’ve kept the car and still had it to this day ) notchback some Canadian 89 mustangs (if you ordered them from mid year on, they came as an 89 model but ) got the 90 airbag wheel because of the rules here I really wish I still had that car The half dozen or so fox platform cars that I let go over the years. I am really really killing myself over it now that deep maroon red that might’ve only been a four-cylinder but it would’ve been a great car to build. I have found a few crazy, rare, low mile foxes up here recently during my hunt for my daughters first car
@@GearHead704 Yep there is some weird differences for sure like the 89 1/2 cars had the anniversary horse on the dash and daytime running lights. There’s a few Canadian mustangs that people have no idea that are hiding up here still.
Love that colour! and that it’s an Ontario car. I didn’t get what you said about Ottawa but it’s within Ontario. Awesome rundown by Matt and amazing video as usual 🤙🏼🏁
I bought a brand new Blk/Blk GT back in the spring of 1992, and I'm almost positive mine came with Goodyear tires. I need to find some old pics & paperwork to see. But I'm pretty sure it had Goodyears.
Unreal car… FYI, the city of Ottawa is in the province of Ontario. It’s also the capital city of the country of Canada (like Washington D.C. for the US)
Is there a way to find out whether the gravel guard at the bottom was a factory option or not? My car has been repainted and it has it but I’m wondering whether that was added or whether it was from the factory. It was originally purchased in Ohio.
If it was a factory option it is designated on the main buck tag with code "RA" (road abrasion coating) and then a second buck tag says "ROAD ABRASION". Of course it would also be on the build sheet and Marti report.
That coating was standard on Canadian cars but was never used on American market cars. It was never an "option". "EDIT"--This applies to the 1987-1993 cars, as being discussed in this video...the 1979-1986 cars are pretty much a completely different animal when it comes to what was factory available. What was optional on 1979-1986 cars is 100% irrelevant when discussing a 1992 LX 5.0.
I just saw a Marti report today from a 1980 Cobra ordered through the Buffalo, NY DSO by a dealer in Oneonta, NY that had the 'lower bodyside protection' option listed.
Michelins we're standard for the LX 5.0, Goodyears were a no cost option. I ordered a 93 LX coupe brand new just like this one but Black, manual windows & locks, no a/c, cruise control, 5 speed and 3.08 gears, and Goodyear tires. It was $14,700 including taxes.
Yes, the Michelins were the 'all-season performance' tires and the Goodyears were the 'performance' tires. Michelins were standard on the LX 5.0L and optional on the GT. Goodyears were optional on the LX 5.0L and standard on the GT.
You say the LX was not popular. Partially true. GT's were considered more desirable to most. But the LX 5.0 were actually in high demand relative to the numbers produced. I had a hard time in 88 finding an LX 5.0 without a dealer mark up. I got the LX because it was closer to a sleeper, less gaudy and quicker and better handling due to 100+ pound weight savings without the GT body cladding.
@@GearHead704 I had a friend with an 87 gt. We swapped cars. The difference in weight was evident. But what was truly surprising was the handling. The LX was much more responsive, better turn in and wallowed alot less in the corners. One other thing. I waited til 88 for mine because they adjusted the pedals for double clutch/ toe and heel shifting. That made the car much more fun to drive. As you can tell, I am not as much about 0-60 as I am about corners. To me power is there to get you through and out of the corners.
By the way great video. Mine was a hatch which worked for me then. But that big hole in the back made the chassis flexible, especially as the soft steel fatigued. So this notchback is very appealing. Especially true as the stiffer chassis makes for better cornering. The big problem with this car is the milage. I wouldn't be able to keep it off the road so I would destroy it's value.
I would like to point out that there is one thing that is missing that should have been on the car from the Ford factory/dealer. On the front of the upper intake towards the right side you will see a circle. That circle is actually supposed to have a rubber grommet that sits on the intake. Personally I think this grommet is ugliest thing I have ever seen. I am glad that it is not the there. I am in no way criticizing the car it is gorgeous. I just wanted to do a little fun fact. Anyway, great video Matt. I have a 93 notchback myself. Mint condition however it supercharged with a 347 Stroker. No I'm not going to sell it just in case anyone was wondering. I would sell my fiance before that car ever leaves me. I personally don't really like the strictly original everything cars. The fun with these cars is doing upgrades with how well they respond to them. I think I've rambled enough have a good night everybody
You’re talking about that sort of rectangular black plastic piece that covers the core plug on the front of the intake, right? I never liked the looks of that either, always wanted to pull one off to see what held it on but never did. Adhesive? Anyway I am not an expert and my memory isn’t what it used to be, but having read every copy of SuperFord and Mustang Monthly magazines the day I received them back in the 80’s & 90’s, I have a vague memory that maybe Ford discontinued that somewhere during the EFI Fox body run. Possible? Or am I just so used to seeing cars now without them that it looks normal?
I thought Ford stopped doing that when they went to mass air, but I could be wrong. Anyway, like you said very gorgeous car! I like both modified and original.
If anyone has an original battery it wouldn't be much good now! Our Canadian cars came with that pebble guard texture. Another Canadian controversial topic/debate is that our Canadian GT mustangs came with a "COBRA" sticker from factory on the left side of the hatchback even thought it's a GT.
Ford called all 1984-92 Mustang GTs ordered/sold in Canada as "Cobra GT". 1986 Canadian GTs even have "GTC" (GT Cobra) on the buck tag. Cobra sticker was on the left only for 1986-91, as there was a CHMSL in the center. The sticker was in the center in 1985. There was no Cobra sticker in 1984 or 1992.
This car, some select Saleen cars, perhaps the actual Pacecar, a 7UP car, a 93 COBRA & R car, an early Foureye COBRA as well and a 20th Anny car and a few others would be a great exhibit at the Peterson!
I have the 93 chrome yellow convertible, black top, black leather, 5 speed trunk car. Chrome ponies, it was also limited production similar to the 7up car I believe. Sets in a garage. Edit: Canary yellow. My 1994 was chrome yellow
I have seen a lot of comments about the lower door protection. It was coined “Duraguard “ by Ford in I believe 1977 and then used in this portion of the car in 1978. It was standard on all passenger cars in Canada from that date onwards. My cousins tnew 79 mustang and my dads 79 Granada had it. Ford had placed a decal on the side window promoting it. Just FYI. It wasn’t rare or special, just a Canadian thing. As far as the roll up windows, lack of options or a/c again being from Canada this was pretty much a common sight in the day until a/c and other options became standard. It certainly wasn’t rare For those living in the states who have never seen Canadian cars the coating or roll up windows lack of options would obviously seem foreign to you 😊 My brother worked as a mechanic at a Mercury/Lincoln dealership and did the PDI or pre delivery inspection on probably thousands of Ford of Canada cars new and including the Mercury Capri ( sister car to the mustang of this era) . I also worked at the same dealership in 1988. Mat great job on the video pointing out and explaining to others alit things in foxbody cars who are unfamiliar or simply to young to know.
Duraguard was much more than just the textured coating on the lower bodyside. From the 1992 Mustang showroom brochure, for Ford of Canada: Each passenger car is protected with the corrosion protection DuraGuard system. This system is built in at the factory to provide the following corrosion protection: - Precoated steel on doors, quarter panels, hoods, and other selected areas - Galvanized steel on rocker panels, selected cowl tops, and underbody parts - Vinyl sealer on underside of rear wheelhouses - Super cleaning process followed by phosphate coating on the entire car body - Electrocoat process to apply corrosion resistant primer paint on entire body - Aluiminized wax sprayed into hard to places and door surfaces - Protective vinyl or urethane coating behind wheel openings and along lower bodyside area I can find the same processes in all 1982 through 1993 Ford of Canada Mustang brochures, although worded a little differently in some years. Before 1985 the textured coating on the lower bodyside was shown as a separate option and it was called "lower bodyside protection". MSRP was ~$40 in 1984. Some Mustangs in the states had this option. It was indicated on Mustang buck tags, in all years, by the code "RA", and spelled out as "ROAD ABRASION" on a second buck tag. The 1982 through 1985 Mustang brochures for Ford of Canada says this about the last of the 7 processes listed above: - protective vinyl coating on the lower bodyside for resistance to stone chipping and road abrasion
Salmon, yes my apologies I should of clarified that it was part of the Duragard system that I believe Ford of Canada started in 1977, and the lower body side protection the following year 1978. Most people that I know and knew (body shop people included) just referred to this as duraguard. Whether or not they knew it was part of a system or an entire process . As far as American cars thanks for the clarification as I didn’t know that. For Canadian cars yes it was a cost option but am almost certain it was on every passenger car made from Ford of Canada ( mercury’s included) So this option would not be uncommon or rare for Canada or for a fox body. The same would apply to a block heater for example. It’s listed as a cost option but the majority of vehicles just come with them. The dealer would order them that way. It happens still to this day. If you live in certain parts of Canada, yes a block heater is an option, but I will bet the dealer ordered it for your car , regardless of the model mustang or otherwise and you would have one . Whether is installed or sitting loose in the trunk . Again thanks for both Matt’s for the video.
Lots of clean Canadian cars tucked away. Less likely to have been driven in the winter. I believe Bimini was a 91-92 colour. Only difference is 91 had black body striping. Like other LX colours like calypso, are LX only colours.
Not every car ordered the dealer is a "showroom floor model". Seems like a custom ordered car in which the deal fell through or an ad leader car. Definitely not ordered this way for the dealer to save money on their inventory costs. Great presentation of a car from the era though and thing is worth $$$ for sure. Congrats on 10k subs
There were several ways a dealer could order a car for dealer use, as in inventory, or as a showroom car, or as a lease, etc. order type 2 = 'stock order' order type 7 = 'local promotion' order type B = 'stock-dealer demonstrator' order type E = 'dealer lease' The order type would be indicated on the invoice, window sticker, build sheet, and Marti report.
I have a motorcraft battery BX-58C, standard battery for a mustang at the time. It’s ~30 years old. I don’t believe it to be a service replacement and do believe it is an original battery. If you want to see pictures let me know.
I forgot to mention, this is the black case battery, black top. The white case battery (black top) was used until 1990 . So the battery would be period correct, but unsure if it would be date coded correct for 100% originality.
@@GearHead704 Kerry sort on Facebook is a Canadian and he told me that. I think from what Matt said from fox resto all the Canadian cars came with it. I get the purpose of it but don’t like the look
It was a low price bait and switch car. It was the model that was advertised in the paper as the low price leader used to get people into the show room. When a customer came is the salesman would say, "yes, I could sell you this car but wouldn't you rather have......"
@@GearHead704 not sure how old you are, but back then, there was no real internet. Everyone would get the paper, especially on Sunday. In the Sunday paper was a section of full page adds, sometimes multi-page add from all of the newspapers. On the top of the page for each dealers was an add for a car at a very low price. That car was there to get people into the show room. Depending on the car and options, it would either be sold immediately or not for a long. Either way, the purpose was to get people in the showroom so they could be redirected to more expensive, profitable cars. A bit of history from the not so distant past, at least for this old fart.

I believe that the coating is referred to as lower road side abrasion protection on a Marti report. Most Canadian cars have this, rear defrost, block heater, metric speedometer ect.
Cool thanks for extra info.
Gorgeous car !
Yes indeed! DV
Love this video! Great to see Matt so excited, he is such a wealth of knowledge, kind of felt like an episode of the Antiques Roadshow.
I agree bro. Content is on point! I still need to call you so we can meet up soon! Miami Style! 🤣

My fox body has the rocker guard from the factory and it is in Canada
Very cool, definitely seems like a thing for up there back then.
Nice video Matt! I hooked up my fog lights on my 92 green car with the harness already there! I ask how to hook them up on a LX on youtube and a guy told me about the wiring! ;-)
Hah hah, that's cool Frank, I feel like I should've known this a long time ago.

Tell Matt thank you for the detail about the build date stamp. I found it on the left strut tower on my ‘84 GT. The stamp is 10 07 and the build tag says 10/83. Also this car has the same coating below the belt line and it was originally sold in Iowa.
That's aweomse you found the car bday Roy!
Sweet.
Indeed!
Hey bud, great video as always. A couple things for you: my 92 coupe (Canadian car) is the same option sheet as this 92; only options it has is power mirrors, cruise, and lumbar. It also has the “gravel guard” on bottom of the doors.
Awesome, I love that all the Canadian cars seem to have the gravel guard.
“Road Abrasion” is what the tag reads on mine.
My dad still has his blue 87 LK 5.0. Gravel Guard. Also we has an 88' notchback at the same time. Gravel guard too. So I had fun in high School. 2 5.0 's :)
That car is amazing!
It really isJim. Thanks.
Nice color! I had a 92 notch titanium frost though 4 cylinder bought it in 96’ sold it in 07’ $1,100 fun cars
Very cool!
Thanks!!
Yeah having Matt was invaluable. Great to have confirmation on the coating man, that really makes sense.
Stunning
It really is.

Hey Frank, you got that right. Thanks
Whoa I had no idea about the airbag in the 89 cars, great to hear about some of the Canadian differences. Thanks for sharing man!
Hey Paul, you're too kind. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Sterling Ford is in Ottawa.
Congratulations on 10k subscribers Matt!!!!
Thanks! so much!
I bought a brand new Blk/Blk GT back in the spring of 1992, and I'm almost positive mine came with Goodyear tires. I need to find some old pics & paperwork to see. But I'm pretty sure it had Goodyears.
Goodyears were standard on the GT. Michelins were optional on the GT.
Yeah, apparently there were two tire options.
Wow it looks new
Yeah Chris, it basically is LOL
Like mentioned Bimini Blue was a 91/92 color only.
Right, good to know.
Wow that car is so cool!
It really is man. So clean I could eat off of it too LOL
Absolutely speechless what an amazing car!!
It truly is.
Unreal car… FYI, the city of Ottawa is in the province of Ontario. It’s also the capital city of the country of Canada (like Washington D.C. for the US)
It really is. Cool, I should know more about Canada than I do.
One of my favorite colors 🤤🤤
Yeah, I love the Bimini
1991/1992 Color but the 1991 cars had the bodyside moldings painted black
Thanks Chet, I forgot what year they started painted the body side molding.
Is there a way to find out whether the gravel guard at the bottom was a factory option or not? My car has been repainted and it has it but I’m wondering whether that was added or whether it was from the factory. It was originally purchased in Ohio.
Apparently someone in the comments said it's listed on the Marti report.
@@GearHead704 thanks
If it was a factory option it is designated on the main buck tag with code "RA" (road abrasion coating) and then a second buck tag says "ROAD ABRASION". Of course it would also be on the build sheet and Marti report.
What a beautiful machine
Definitely is.
Ford still does this with the harnesses
Smart
The 31 mile 93 cobra that sold this weekend for 80k is ridiculous
That's probably a good deal at this point.
The coating on the rockers is an option called ‘road abrasion protection’ just an FYI lol 😉
My fox has it.. . original paint
Cool thanks Thomas! It's a cool option
@@gdb5448 incorrect. My 82GT had that as an option.
I just saw a Marti report today from a 1980 Cobra ordered through the Buffalo, NY DSO by a dealer in Oneonta, NY that had the 'lower bodyside protection' option listed.
Buddy of mine owns that car down here in East Tennessee area. Had it at the Cabin Fever car show last weekend 1/7/2023.
Brantley is a great dude.
When they first came out with the 16" star wheels in 91 they came with Goodyear Gatorbacks at first.
Awesome, I didn't know that.
Thanks for the info guys. I would love to have that 93 you ordered for that price now lol
I love the color actually
Bimini is great! My favorite blue other than my Carolina blue LOL
@@GearHead704 speaking of they barely escaped today 😆
I learned something. I thought that car came out with Goodyear gatorbacks
Me too.
Matt my 89 has that textured paint.
Awesome, was it a Canadian car?
@@GearHead704 yes sold in Canada originally
You say the LX was not popular. Partially true. GT's were considered more desirable to most. But the LX 5.0 were actually in high demand relative to the numbers produced. I had a hard time in 88 finding an LX 5.0 without a dealer mark up. I got the LX because it was closer to a sleeper, less gaudy and quicker and better handling due to 100+ pound weight savings without the GT body cladding.
You make some good points. A lot of people didn't realize it, but some like yourselves knew the weight difference was the key to speed.
Ya, that stopped long before this car was produced. Ford only did that for 1986-early 1989 intakes.
Appreciate the info Jason. I think he would just put the battery in the car during the show, then pull it out when it was time to head home.
This car, some select Saleen cars, perhaps the actual Pacecar, a 7UP car, a 93 COBRA & R car, an early Foureye COBRA as well and a 20th Anny car and a few others would be a great exhibit at the Peterson!
I would love to see all those together.
I have the 93 chrome yellow convertible, black top, black leather, 5 speed trunk car. Chrome ponies, it was also limited production similar to the 7up car I believe. Sets in a garage.
Edit: Canary yellow. My 1994 was chrome yellow
@@Hammerback0 these cars too should be part of that group as well as that Shelby Fox.
It certainly wasn’t rare
For those living in the states who have never seen Canadian cars the coating or roll up windows lack of options would obviously seem foreign to you 😊
My brother worked as a mechanic at a Mercury/Lincoln dealership and did the PDI or pre delivery inspection on probably thousands of Ford of Canada cars new and including the Mercury Capri ( sister car to the mustang of this era) . I also worked at the same dealership in 1988.
Mat great job on the video pointing out and explaining to others alit things in foxbody cars who are unfamiliar or simply to young to know.
I should clarify the lack of options in base model cars and certainly the LX was just that.
Duraguard was much more than just the textured coating on the lower bodyside. From the 1992 Mustang showroom brochure, for Ford of Canada:
Each passenger car is protected with the corrosion protection DuraGuard system. This system is built in at the factory to provide the following corrosion protection:
- Precoated steel on doors, quarter panels, hoods, and other selected areas
- Galvanized steel on rocker panels, selected cowl tops, and underbody parts
- Vinyl sealer on underside of rear wheelhouses
- Super cleaning process followed by phosphate coating on the entire car body
- Electrocoat process to apply corrosion resistant primer paint on entire body
- Aluiminized wax sprayed into hard to places and door surfaces
- Protective vinyl or urethane coating behind wheel openings and along lower bodyside area
I can find the same processes in all 1982 through 1993 Ford of Canada Mustang brochures, although worded a little differently in some years.
The 1982 through 1985 Mustang brochures for Ford of Canada says this about the last of the 7 processes listed above:
- protective vinyl coating on the lower bodyside for resistance to stone chipping and road abrasion

There were several ways a dealer could order a car for dealer use, as in inventory, or as a showroom car, or as a lease, etc.
order type 2 = 'stock order'
order type 7 = 'local promotion'
order type B = 'stock-dealer demonstrator'
order type E = 'dealer lease'
The order type would be indicated on the invoice, window sticker, build sheet, and Marti report.
@@foxchassis My point, you do not order a car for the showroom floor or cheap to save money as said in the video.
