It is one of those debut films that were improved by their low budget. Similar to how Clerks cut down the terrible funeral scene and Reservoir Dogs trimed down the violence on the Mr Blonde's torture scene because the ear prostethic looked faked, this movie cut a lot of characters and plot points that involved a run of the mill murder mystery. The way its structure is like a crime drama without the crime. It gives the movie a sense of tension because you think a murder is going to happen but it doesn't, so the tension is never relieved making for a unique watching experience.

Cool. Movie. Roman Polanski is such a great artist. I wish he had made more movies in Polish. The lady in this movie was so sexy...rocking those glasses.
He didn't like the restrictions the polish communist gouverment imposed to the film industry, that's why he left for west Europe and eventually Hollywood and never came back. I think it is one of his bests though, and Jolanta was indeed a beautiful woman.
