Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, he was important in that he made classical music accessible to everyone. And modern symphony and piano music too. As a young Jewish classical pianist he was an inspiration. Our family watched him and enjoyed his programs. I was disappointed the movie didn’t dig deeper into his career and identify his musical (not romantic) partners and their collaborations.
Thank you for reminding me of the actual legacy of Leonard Bernstein. His sexuality was private to one of the thousands of youth getting their first exposure to classical music from the gifted maestro who communicated to children and adults about classical music for they may otherwise might never have given it another thought. That would be a heroic undertaking to write a scenario about Leonard Bernstein’s tenure at Harvard, his lectures on Music spanning decades, his musical writing and performing. Is there someone capable of that at the end of civilization? No.
Perhaps Leonard Bernstein's greatest contribution was his Young People's Concerts. I saw these sessions in middle school in the working class neighborhood north of Detroit where I grew up. As it happens, I have been watching them again recently as in my seventies I go deeper into classical music. There's no doubting his talent -- he was a master of melody. As with so much else in American life, there is no denying the enormous contributions of the Jewish diaspora to music, art, literature ... This grandson of Kentucky coal miner and son of an assembly line worker could not be more grateful.
As the sound level was typically low, it was a pity that there were no captions available. Your final conclusion is spot-on. There have been many artist throughout history whose great works were inspired by love or lust, but the works are more interesting than the motivation. No doubt there were orders of magnitude more people with similar inspirations but without the ability to produce anything memorable. I haven't seen the film, but if they didn't play the Black Panther party for farce, they missed an opportunity.
Funny I had a total different impression maybe I didn’t know anything from Bernstein appart from the fact that he created west side stories. I loved Bradley cooper portrayal I though it was a beautiful love story I understood his profound love for music and life and people to tell you the truth I saw it 4 times and I thought the Cooper was extremely sexy. Some of the scenes from his younger years made me think of my own 20s the bohemian energy was the same
Right he is enough with this disgusting fixation on homosexuality. I knew this was focus of film and only watched it as his children were involved and approving.
I read Tobin's review of Maestro - which I thought was a brilliant, moving film . The article was just a load of camouflaged homophobia, from start to finish. Shocking that someone would still write that kind of article in 2023.

I enjoyed this excellent review and analysis, Jonathan. Thank you.

I never gave a thought about his sex life or whether or not he had one until I saw this, thanks

I used to live down the street from Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY where Bernstein is buried. Always interested in his career.
I loved the movie I wasn’t offended whatsoever
Me neither. Tobin clearly was.
Does he really think the movie should have depicted his Zionism? 🤨
netflix = gays, lgbt+x
Homophobia, alive & well.
@@dalegrimshaw4256truth hurts, I know.
The only truth is that you both appear to be full of negativity & hatred.@@freezo244
You do know that Jews have played a disproportionate role in promoting all this, right?
That what captures Bradley’s attention or he would have run off with Ms GAGAGAGAGA!

Homophobe,
